A Look at Today’s Opponent: Presbyterian

u Presbyterian (1-1) comes to Cullowhee after scoring its first victory of the season last Saturday at home against Virginia University of Lynchburg, halting a 10-game slide that dated back to the 2021 season . . . the win was also the first under head coach STEVE ENGLEHART . . . the Blue Hose suffered a 63-0 road loss at FCS-foe Austin Peay on Sept . 3 to open the Englehart Era in Clinton; u PC finished 2-9 a season ago, winning its first two games before dropping nine-straight despite a couple of close calls in league play including an eight-point home loss to Morehead State and a 10 point defeat at Valparaiso; u Fans may remember Presbyterian's time as a member of the Big South Conference – however, the Blue Hose program moved to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) non-scholarship Pioneer Football League prior to last season . . . the PFL is in its 30th season of competition and is one of only two conferences that sponsor football as its only major sport along with the Missouri Valley Football Conference . . . the Pioneer Football League is the nation's ONLY non-scholarship, football-only conference; u Members of the Pioneer Football League – or PFL – include: Butler, Davidson, Dayton, Drake, Marist, Morehead State, Presbyterian, San Diego, Stetson, St . Thomas (Minn .), and Valparaiso; u Presbyterian was picked to 11th in the 11-team Pioneer Football League preseason coaches' poll . . .

Davidson was tabbed as the preseason PFL favorite after winning its first league title in the Spring 2021 season and sharing the Fall 2021 title with San Diego, which was tabbed second in the preseason PFL coaches' poll; u Presbyterian's top offensive threat is running back DELVECCHIO POWELL II . . . He scored seven touchdowns in 2021 – six rushing, one receiving – and was All-PFL as an all-purpose back, recording 100+ all-purpose yards six times, setting the PC single-season Division I record (since 2007) in yards per carry with 6 .57; u Linebacker ALEX HERRIOTT leads the Blue Hose defense with 20 tackles with a sack over the first two games this season . . . Herriott paced PC in total tackles as a freshman last year, earning honorable mention All-PFL honors which translated into a preseason first-team All-PFL nod this year; u ABOUT HEAD COACH STEVE ENGLEHART: Is in his first season at Presbyterian after spending the previous seven seasons at Florida Tech, where he started that Division II program from scratch and led them from 2011 onward until the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the program . . . Englehart led the Panthers to 44 victories over a seven-year period . . . He is an Indiana State alum, having served as the offensive coordinator for the Sycamores' football program; u During his time at Florida Tech, he was named Gulf South Conference Coach of the Year twice while leading them to two NCAA D-II playoff appearances . u DID YOU KNOW: Much like Western Carolina's Catamounts, Presbyterian has a very unique nickname, the Blue Hose . . . the nickname “Blue Hose” began in the early 1900's, when sportswriters referred to the Presbyterian College athletic teams as the “Blue Stockings” because of the blue socks they wore . . . Writers used the terms “stockings” and “hose” interchangeably over the years and often shortened “stockings” to “hose” in newspaper headlines; u Coincidentally enough, former college PR guy Ben Hay Hammet's 1982 centennial history of PC noted that blue-stocking Presbyterians also referred to “Presbyterian's with strong puritan leanings” . . . “At any rate,” Hammet wrote, “the sports nickname was shortened to 'Blue Hose' in 1954, presumably under the assumption that it sounded somewhat fiercer to carry onto the field of athletic battle . ” u The PC student body adopted the nickname as the official school nickname in the 1950's . . . “Blue Hose” has survived all these years, taking on even more meaning . . . Today the name signifies fierce Scottish warriors, further adding to Hammet's take on the term, also reflecting the college's Scottish heritage .
