about me I am Catarina. I like to have my hands in a lot of activities. Recently I just finished my Master Thesis in Architecture in Lisbon. I have soon began to conjugate my academic path with professional activities, in order to acquire and develop skills, in and out my area of expertise. Perfectionism and demand are features which accompany me as long as I can remember and have allowed me to achieve good results in the challenges I am proposed and propose myself. Above all, I like to learn and evolve. I feel comfortable working in a team, bringing in my motivation and availability, necessary to achieve new goals and acquire more knowledge. I am responsible and equipped with multi-tasking tools. One of my biggest passions is travelling around the world. Luckily, I have been in some beautiful places our planet has to offer. Among those places there is Barcelona, a city full of life and amazing architecture, where I spent half an year in Erasmus. I also have enjoyed transitioning my love of drawing, photography, art and culture into my projects so far. I am also passionate about horse riding and cooking, activities I practice in my free time. I can also be found practising snowboarding and surfing.

housing prototype ACADEMIC PROJECT Faculdade de Arquitectura, University of Lisbon Lisbon, Portugal, 2014
The approach to this Housing Prototype was mainly a reflection of how to build houses in case of an emergency, such as wars that destroy villages, earthquakes or any other event that might leave people with no place to live in. More than anything, the program had it’s origin with the idea of how to build in case of an emergency situation and how can a building can be easily built in different environments in case of need. On the other hand, the sense of introspection and the common reflection about the relation between social and private space are also central points in the development of this proposal. The approach had as a start point how to inhabit small spaces and how to take advantage of levels to separate social and private spaces - social areas on the lower level and private and more intimate areas on an upper level. Trying to understand the minimum measures necessary for a comfortable living it was adopted a way to construct by reinterpreting scale, natural light, and the different possibilities of uses for each room instead of setting one concept to design it. Windows were found fundamental for making internal spaces seem spacious and well-lighted, offering the best way to get fresh air and daylight to the internal spaces, allowing the house to breathe. Balancing the heights of each space was also found indispensable, since social areas, like require bigger height than private areas destined to sleeping. As these spaces that have public nature are dispersed, lines of flow work effectively, so there is no need for defining rooms or closed spaces, ensuring a broader space. What’s more, by overlapping multiple uses on one space, efficiency of floor space is improved. Corridor as desk space, eating table as a working space and so on. The main materials are wood for the interior - since it is a comfortable material to the touch - and masonry for the outside shell of the prototype. The choices of material, besides the appearance, where made with the idea of being possible to build anywhere in the world - using this materials in the found in the construction site. This prototype also allows agregation, being possible to build in height or create a complex using an unique model.

institut maria espinalt de barcelona ACADEMIC PROJECT Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura del Vallès (ETSAV) | Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Barcelona, Espanha, 2015
On January 24, 2008, the City Council of Barcelona and the Generalitat of Catalonia acquired a commitment of collaboration in order to carry out the construction, rehabilitation and improvement actions of public educational centers planned in Plan d ‘Educational equipments of Barcelona 2008-2011.The construction of the new highschool, regulated by this document, comes as a result of the necessity of replacement of the Fluvià Institut and responds to the will agreed in the framework of this commitment. In order to take best advantage from the construction site, it is proposed to increase some of the management parameters defined by the current planning, such as the maximum number of plants and the maximum height, without disrupting the surrounding city landscape. In fact, this would emphasize the idea of making the future education center more flexible, leavin free space for playground and nature. Regarding this principles (and other conditions imposed by the City Council, such as a perimeter for building or environmental issues), the building is composed by two bars on the ground floor on which stands a quadrilateral shaped volume drilled in the center. This volumes organised around a squared patio that aims to take advantage of the sunlight, while also creating different exterior spaces. Therefore all the interior spaces have natural light throughout the course of the school period. The program was complex and challenging, however the organisation of the building kept the idea of a journey, which means a persistent discover of this sequence of spaces, through the light and the visual connections. More than just a school, more than just a functional building, this is meant to be a space for family and friends, recreation and, most of all, a place of discovery and everyday learning.

sines hotel ACADEMIC PROJECT Faculdade de Arquitectura, University of Lisbon Sines, Portugal, 2016
The implantation of this industrial unit near the coast serves the purpose of refrigeration, a fundamental resource in the process of energy production, which is composed of constant heating and cooling, in the chain of transformation and production of energy. After 30 years in production, the whole of this infrastructure is at the end its technical life. It is possible that its operation will be extended for a few more years, but its deactivation will be consummated in the near future. Therefore, this theoretical project aimed to understand how this colossal industrial structure could be adapted to different uses, instead of dismantling the entire building. The construction of the building was somehow careless and the interior and facade materials, mostly metal, were not adequate for future and different used. However, the concrete structure was fenomenal and still in and in optimal preservation conditions, so it became the main element of a new building. Due to the dimensions of the industrial complex, the program suggested the creation of an hotel - in the main volume of the old factory - , that associated with a library and cultural centre - a smaller volume - , and with a events and conference centre - another smaller volume - would be able to function in such a great building. The technical areas and parking lot are shared by all the buildings, allowing communication between them. The hotel is organised, on the grounf floor, symmetrically relatively to a central axis, with the entrance and reception at the centre and the restaurants on the tops of the building. Having the idea of ‘box inside a box’ as a starting point and keeping in mind the needs and functional program of a hotel, it start with the development of several boxes that are able to evolve and response to different needs - for example different boxes for the hotel bars and for the several rooms.

east meets west ACADEMIC PROJECT Sekolah Tinggi Desain Bali (STDBali) Sanur, Bali, Indonesia, 2017
The program for this project was presented as something quite simple: designing a house for an Australian family, moving to Bali, that wanted a traditional house but with some of the comfort natural to a western house. The idea for the project was, therefore, since the beginning, trying to find a balance between the completly different cultures, integrating the project into the so characteristic Balinese landscape. The approach had as a starting point the typical balinese compound house which established since the beginning some thoughts or suggestions as to a possible course of action. As a result, the villa is organised in several buildings, spread across the site plan, avoid buildings of great dimensions, with the exception of the main one, which contains the family building. Other functions such as the guest house, storage, yoga pavillion and other facilities are spread across the land, allowing a more natural landscape and layers of privacy. The climatic parameters particular to site, sun movement and prevailing wind direction, were established to assist in the formulation of the orientation of villas and common areas, and their planning concept. In here the materials get a special importance since they were thought meticulously in order to integrate the buildings into the landscape. So textures and colours of nature, dressed slates, tiles, smoothed unpainted wood, roughly cut stone and light coloured concrete were the main materials chosen in order to fulfil these purpose. The project was conceived to be both climatically and socially reactive to its locale. The design responds to the notions of climate and place, and endeavours to engage the local landscape and community. The design of the villa was approached with a sensitivity to the nuances of the site setting, and thus executed with the strategy of minimal environmental impact, minimal built footprint and with local cultural practices (religious and ceremonial processions) taken into consideration. The exterior landscape design is intended to create a seamless transition between the interior and exterior spaces, with the specific goal in preserving the natural topography. Built elements are planned to sit ‘lightly’ on the land. The selection of trees responds to both the local climate and the resort planning with tree types playing a key role in the creation of ‘shaded spaces’, private spaces and communal areas.

for a resilient city ACADEMIC PROJECT - MASTER THESIS Faculdade de Arquitectura, University of Lisbon Lisbon, Portugal, 2018
In a city, characterized by a great historical component, which nowadays is still visible in the urban landscape, we can find Alcântara, an urban area that is a result from the expansion of Lisbon. The need to consolidate this territory comes from a long industrial past, which over time has gradually led to the abandonment of these, now obsolete, spaces and to a demarcated fragmentation of the urban fabric. The theme of the project is developed around this problem, for which a reflection has been expounded, in order to comprehend and find a possible solution for an urban evolution that allows the city never to lose it’s unique character. The proposal comes to materialize a functional program, directed to the creation of several elements, which aims to respond to social and urbanistic aspects, through a regeneration of urban space, connected to a logic of a community life and an architecture with a purpose to respond to a continuous change of a contemporary society. The proposal focuses on an urban proposal, with strong foundations in history and which aims to creat a strong social cohesion. Therefore, is created a single urban nucleus with a diversity of uses, with a big concern around public spaces, and multiple housing tipologies, aiming do respond to the needs of the population of Alcântara. Human beings experience spaces in a different way, according to their senses and inevitably through their culture and past experiences. For this reason, the project suggests the rehabilitation of three beuildings of the old industrial complex and the construction of new ones to complement this fragment area. Flexibility and adaptability are the solution for each and every building, allowing this nucleus to evolve in short or long periods of time, allowing a better adaptation to differen inhabitants and creating the opportunity for it to evolve according to an ever changing contemporary society. Progressively, arises the idea that a building, capable of dealing with a change of use and a continuous evolution of the urban context, responds more accordingly to issues concerning urban aspects and satisfaction of each individual’s needs. With this in mind, the concepts of flexibility and adaptability take form, such as the awareness about a new way of thinking architecture for a resilient city.
