SALISBURY, NC -- Junior Valentin Nava (Salisbury, NC/Carson HS) scored both goals as Catawba snapped a three-match losing streak with a 2-0 victory over visiting Belmont Abbey in men’s soccer action on Thursday night at Frock Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 3-4 on the season, while the Crusaders fall to 3-4. After a scoreless first half, Nava got the Indians in front with two goals in a span of a minute and 12 seconds just before the hour. He was twice freed on breakaways, the first from Spencer Preston (Jacksonville, NC/Jacksonville HS) and the second from Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS). On Nava’s first goal in the 55th minute, he raced onto a long through ball from Preston, fought past a defender, and scored from a sharp angle on the right side just inside the far post. Smith would also free Nava on a breakaway where he also scored from the same sharp right angle. Belmont Abbey had several opportunities to cut into the margin, the first on a penalty kick in the 66th minute, but Jack Reid (Nottingham, ENGLAND) sent the shot off the crossbar and the Indians cleared. Catawba keeper Evan Harvey (Apex, NC/Apex HS) then made two nice saves to keep the sheet clean. Just 30 seconds after the penalty kick, a free kick by Kyle Searles (Charlotte, NC) from 25 yards out was tipped over the bar by Harvey. The last Crusader chance came 10 minutes from time when Harvey parried away a shot from Conor Wells (Austin, TX) to the side.

SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE
The South Atlantic Conference is in its 37th year of athletic tradition and excellence. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Sixâ€?, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the OHDJXH DFFHSWHG 1HZEHUU\ DV LWV ÂżUVW 6RXWK Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC EHFDPH WKH ÂżUVW WR VXEPLW WKH 6$& PRQLNHU 7KH 6$& FRQVLVWHG RI &DUVRQ 1HZPDQ College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College.
