Spring is fast approaching, which is very welcome as it feels to have been particularly long, dark winter. Let’s hope for a decent spell of good weather in the coming months as I expect that many of you will be dusting off the cobwebs from your external work equipment in readiness for another outdoor painting season.

March was a busy month at the PDA. I have been out hosting and judging the first two of this year’s regional heats of the Apprentice of the Year competition, and was very heartened by the interest this year, given that we have had 75 entrants across the four heats. Accrington and Rosendale College was our first stop, with 16 apprentices taking part. As always, we were made very welcome by Phil Burgess and his team. We have been using this college now for quite a few years, and we thank them once again for their generous hospitality.

Our next stop, Glasgow, was a first for the PDA, where 20 apprentices were taking part. What a splendid college this is, with a construction department that is second to none, I was very impressed with its layout and facilities. Thanks go to our liaison lecturer Michael McEwan and his team for hosting this successful event.

Andrew Davis, a representative from the APCT joined me on both occasions to assist with the judging process. The next two heats will be held at Birmingham South and City College and North Kent College

The eight winners from all four heats will then attend the grand final which will be hosted by Doncaster College in May. From there, the winners from each heat will be invited to join us in London at our Premier Trophy Awards event in July.

Regarding the Awards, our team of eight Clerks of Works Judges are currently carrying out the site visits for the shortlisted entries across the seven categories. I look forward to seeing the winners joining me on stage at the Plaisterers’ Hall for the Awards ceremony.

I have just returned from Brussels, where I attended the final project meeting for the UNIEP Painting Skills Academy (PSA) project – www.paintingskillsacademy.eu – This four-year project carried out by 23 partners located across many European countries will be launched officially in Autumn this year. The PDA has made a significant contribution to this extensive piece of work. I would like to thank our longstanding education and training colleague, Ann Cook, for the invaluable work and support throughout.

The outcomes of the project will provide a European Progression Route for Painting and Decorating, which has been designed by the sector to meet its needs and those of the European Qualification Framework. It will enable Painters and Decorators to have their previous qualifications and work experience recognised, and will identify further learning if required; thus enabling them to gain industry recognised certification to work in Europe. Additionally, it will establish a consortium of approved European Training Providers that will deliver courses from a catalogue of Units of Learning Outcomes published annually by UNIEP (International Association of Painting Contractors). UNIEP will monitor and quality assure all the courses to ensure European standardisation and mobility of training and learning in the European Painting Industry.

Lastly, may I once again remind those Members who have still to pay their 2023 subscriptions to do so as soon as possible, as it is now over three months since the requests for payment were made in midDecember with a reminder letter sent out in February. To allow the continuation of the PDA, its services and support to the sector, it is imperative that we receive outstanding payments. If you are having any issues in paying the amount in full, please contact Denice Harper our Membership Services Manager, who will be happy to discuss extended payment terms with you.

NEW SUPPORT FOR MEMBERS PDA JOINS THE LIGHTHOUSE CLUB BESPOKE HEALTH AND SAFETY TRAINING COURSE

The PDA has been working on behalf of our Members with our colleagues at Site Assessment & Training Services (SATS) to develop a NEW Training Standard for Painters & Decorators which has been approved by the CITB

The new six-hour training course can now be offered to managers, supervisors and operatives to update their knowledge on many health and safety related topics to a Standard which will be recognised by major clients. This means that painters and decorators can access the training specifically for them rather than the more generic CITB Health & Safety course.

A very important benefit is that a CITB Training Grant of £70 per person will be available to CITB Registered Employers (subject to Eligibility to claim grants). Where eligible, grants should be paid automatically once each Training Provider submits training details to CITB

The course content is based on a range of topics taken from the new PDA Progressive Web App, formerly the H&S Handbook. The Standard is made up of four core subjects with a minimum of four others chosen to suit Employer’s delegates. Full details on the PDA website. We hope that Members will be keen to take advantage of this opportunity to increase the skills & knowledge of their team. HOW TO BE A SMART SITE

CSCS has completed the rollout of its Smart Check App, which means that cards across all 38 card schemes carrying the CSCS logo can now be verified with the same app. This is in line with the objective in the CLC Industry Card Schemes Recommendation to make sure everyone on site has the right qualifications and training for the job they do. Build UK’s How to be a Smart Site guide has been updated on how to check cards and what to do in the event of coming across a fraudulent card on site. Members are reminded that CSCS does not issue cards for non-construction related occupations and it is the responsibility of the site manager to induct and escort non-construction workers arriving on site without a card so that they can carry out their work safely.

FROM RAPID TECHNOLOGICAL changes to increased demand for sustainable materials, the past few years have been a period of transformation for the building materials industry. For some, these changes will be disruptive. For others, they hold opportunities for new growth and new business models. CHAS outline the key industry trends that are poised to affect building material suppliers in 2023.

TRENDS THAT WILL AFFECT BUILDING MATERIAL SUPPLIERS

Amid an economy reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic and a brewing energy crisis, many businesses across the building materials industry are reorienting their strategies to adapt to current economic conditions and new ways of working.

Despite being an industry long driven by cost and the bottom line, changes such as new technologies and new consumer demands are highlighting the need for new go-to-market strategies. Building materials suppliers are now under pressure to create new value propositions that set them apart from the competition and deliver products and services to keep up with industry changes and new regulations.

Building material suppliers must adapt to changing demands to stay ahead of the curve in 2023. Here are five trends we believe will affect the industry in the years to come.

1

Increasing demand for sustainable and recycled materials

Increasing awareness of the damaging environmental impact of traditional building materials has led to a sharp demand for sustainable and recycled alternatives. This trend is driven by both consumer demand and new government regulations such as the Environmental Act 2021.

Receiving Royal Assent on 9 November 2021, the Environmental Act is the official post-Brexit framework for environmental governance in England. It enables the creation of legally-binding targets for air pollution, biodiversity, water quality and waste. You can expect these developments to add to the growth of the ‘green’ or sustainable building materials market, which Allied Market Research predicts will globally reach $511.2 billion in value by 2030 (a CAGR of 8.1% from 2021).

3Growing popularity of prefabricated construction

A Mordor Intelligence report forecasts the UK prefabricated buildings market to grow at a CAGR of 4.5% from 2020 to 2025. The industry’s revenues, which hit £9 billion in 2019, are largely driven by growing investments in modular construction, where building / project components are manufactured off-site and assembled onsite, enabling faster construction times and improved quality control. This trend will likely continue to grow in the coming years, presenting both opportunities and challenges for material suppliers.

A shift towards circular economy models

An ongoing shift from linear to circular business models, which aim to reduce waste and improve resource efficiency, is driven by concerns about the environmental impact of traditional business models. Public Policy Note 06/21 now requires businesses applying for government contracts over £5 million to demonstrate their commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2050. Companies can demonstrate compliance with environmental regulations and bolster their ESG programme through our Verified Supplier service, designed to help showcase their compliance in up to 10 areas of risk management, including environmental management, health and safety and modern slavery.

4New regulations drive demand for safer materials

The Building Safety Act 2022 officially became law in June 2022. The law modifies the way high-risk structures are built, maintained and made safe, and includes reforms around fire safety and the quality of construction materials. The Act also establishes the National Regulator for Construction Products within the Office for Product Safety and Standards, tasked to conduct market surveillance to identify and remove unsafe materials more efficiently. The new watchdog also has the power to ‘confront poor practice’ and act against material providers that break the rules. Building material suppliers need to be aware of these legislative changes and plan for the direction of the market – one where consumers demand construction companies be held accountable for unsafe practices.

Shift towards digital fabrication methods

We predict that digital fabrication methods, such as 3D printing, will continue to grow and change the landscape of construction in 2023 and beyond. 3D printing, or additive manufacturing, enables the swift fabrication of complex structures using a variety of materials, ranging from plastic (the most popular) to metal and concrete. 3D printing offers exciting potential applications in the build materials industry. More recently, construction firms BAM and Weber Beamix attached a 3D-printed concrete staircase to a footbridge over the M8 motorway in Scotland. The staircase is believed to be the largest 3D printed structure in the UK and the firms claim its construction came at a lower carbon footprint cost.

THE HEATS ARE ON!

THE FIRST AND second regional heats in the new-format Apprentice of the Year competition were held in March.

Andrew Davis from the Association of Painting Craft Teachers (APCT) is part of the impartial competition judges alongside PDA Chief Executive Neil Ogilvie.

The first heat at Accrington and Rossendale College took place on 2 March, where 16 apprentices from four colleges participated in the gruelling six-hour challenge. Apprentices were required to take a complex design on paper and translate it into a carefully completed ‘mural’.

Curriculum leader in painting and decorating at Accrington and Rossendale College, Phil Burgess, said, “It was a fabulous turnout. The level of work was fantastic from all the competitors, and we’re really proud of what they’ve produced.”

The second heat took place at City of Glasgow College on 16 March and was the first ever in Scotland. A great turnout, with 20 apprentices from colleges in Glasgow, Inverness, Fife, Falkirk and Newcastle taking part.

Tom Little, a semi-retired college lecturer in painting and decorating from Lanarkshire was invited to create the designs used in each of the competition events, he said, “The test piece is designed to test a range of skills which

are particular to painters and decorators. Accuracy, getting straight lines, nice regular curves and sharp corners, as well as getting an even application of the coating so the whole background is well covered.”

In April, two more heats will take place to cover the Midlands and the South, with 75 apprentices entering the contest across the four regional heats in 2023.

ADVICE for our Members

TACKLING ABSENCE: TOP TIPS FOR EMPLOYERS

SICKNESS ABSENCE. ONE of the most common headaches for a small business owner, right? You’ll never be able to stop employees from calling in sick, but there are some steps you can take to get a better handle on it.

With sickness absence at a record high in the UK, Citation have given their top tips to help you nail down an effective absence management process.

1. Keep it fair and consistent – Establishing a fair and consistent process for absences in an absence policy is one way to help spot repeat offenders and deter employees from not turning up to work. For most employees, this process will have a big impact on whether they decide to come to work or not.

2. Decide on your notification time period – Set out the time period employees have to tell their manager they can’t work. Some employers ask for this one day before, others say within one hour of the employee’s normal start time –it’s up to you.

3. Make it clear how people should notify you – We’d recommend you request your employees to call in sick over the phone. If they can’t do it themselves, someone needs to do it for them. When the employee reports in, ask them what type of illness they have and what their predicted return date is.

4. Do a return-to-work interview – When the employee returns to work conduct a back-to-work interview, this can act as a deterrent, as employees will be less likely to take time off if they have to formally sit and chat about the reasons.

You also need to respond flexibly to a individual circumstances, e.g. they’ve had 10 years’ service with no absence, but this year they’re having a spate of bad health. You also need to take into account any potential discrimination issues.

Some other good practices:

• Make it known that you actively record and monitor absences.

• Follow a fair procedure and, where appropriate, take disciplinary action against those employees who fall short of the attendance standards.

• Make sure employees are aware of the impact of their absence, both on customers, clients, and work colleagues.

• Treat employees in the same way as you would expect to be treated. And remember... With some employees, you’ll never be able to do enough to get them to come in when they’re not feeling up for work. In these cases, all you can do is monitor the absences, record the details, hold return-to-work interviews, and, when the absence level becomes a problem, take disciplinary action.

You could even look to other social networks such as TikTok to help promote your work, through creating and uploading creative video content.

SO, WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

IN DECEMBER 2022, the government announced its decision to delay introducing Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD for ITSA) for two more years until April 2026.

The government says it has done so because it understands that the UK’s 3.1m sole traders (aka self-employed) and its 2.66m private residential landlords are “currently facing a challenging economic environment, and the transition to Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment represents a significant change [for] taxpayers and HMRC for how self-employment and property income is reported.”

The delay has been welcomed by business groups and professional tax and accountancy bodies, reportedly with both voluntary sign up to the Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment pilot scheme and awareness of MTD for ITSA among UK sole traders and landlords very low.

Latest MTD for ITSA changes

As well as the two-year delay in introducing the first phase of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment, the government has also increased the taxable income threshold, meaning it will impact far fewer Income Tax payers when first introduced, while many others won’t have to comply with the requirements for some years yet.

Changes that were planned for introduction in April 2024 would have affected sole traders and landlords with taxable income of more than £10,000 a year. However, from April 2026, only those with taxable income of over £50,000 in a tax year will be mandated to maintain digital records of their income and costs and provide quarterly summary updates to HMRC using MTD-compatible software (or MTD bridging software that enables them to carry on using their existing accounting software).

Those with a taxable income of £30,000-£50,000 will need to comply with MTD for ITSA requirements from April 2027 (unless more changes are made!).

What if your taxable income is below £30,000 a year?

The government also announced plans to conduct a review into the recording and reporting needs of businesses with taxable income of less than £30,000 a year, which will include a large proportion of UK sole traders, saying it wants to enable smaller businesses to more easily manage their Tax obligations. This review will inform further stages of MTD for ITSA after April 2027.

Whether private residential landlords with taxable income below £30,000 a year will need to comply with rules before sole traders isn’t clear. However, the planned extension to include members of ordinary business partnerships in 2025 has been scrapped, although no new date has yet been announced.

MTD for ITSA recording and reporting requirements

Under MTD for ITSA requirements, sole traders and landlords must maintain digital records of their income and costs and digitally send a quarterly summary to HMRC using MTD-compatible software. They can use bridging software that enables them to comply with MTD reporting requirements while using their existing accounting software (including basic spreadsheets).

They’ll then get an estimated tax bill, based on the information they’ve provided. HMRC believes this will enable sole traders and landlords to better budget to pay their Income Tax tax bills when required.

At the end of the year, sole traders and landlords must digitally submit a statement to HMRC, confirming the figures they’ve submitted, with any accounting adjustments made. They must also make a final declaration, confirming any other income received. They won’t need to file a Self Assessment tax return if they don’t have any other taxable income to report. HMRC will then tell the sole trader or landlord how much tax they owe, which they must pay by 31 January in the following tax year.

When should you sign up?

Ahead of the new April 2026 deadline, sole traders and landlords with taxable income of more than £50,000 a year can voluntarily sign up and start using the new digital recording and reporting methods. HMRC believes it’s a good way for sole traders and landlords to get used to the new MTD requirements long before they become mandatory.

• To sign up, you must be a UK resident, registered for Self Assessment, whose tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April.

• You must also have already filed at least one Self Assessment tax return and all of your tax bills to date must have been paid.

• Obviously, you’ll need to buy compliant software or bridging software (neither is provided by HMRC). HMRC says there are many advantages to signing up early. It could help you to know each quarter how much tax you owe, so you can better budget to pay your tax bill when due. No longer will you be faced with the shock of a surprisingly hefty tax bill that you can’t afford to pay. Moreover, having to more regularly detail your tax expenses means you’re less likely to forget to include some, which could mean your tax bill is lower. Having to enter your costs and income more regularly could also give you greater visibility of your cash flow position and better enable you to maintain a healthier cash flow.

Wait and see?

Those with a lower taxable income can also sign up voluntarily, although many sole traders and landlords with taxable income of £30,000 a year might feel the need to sign up voluntarily at this point, especially if it involves more tax admin more frequently. Many sole traders and landlords will want to wait and see, and continue to report their taxable income via Self Assessment until nearer to a time when they’re mandated to comply with MTD for ITSA recording and reporting requirements.

BACKING THE NEXT GENERATION

AS PART OF the UK’s National Apprenticeship Week 2023, the British Coatings Federation (BCF) encouraged coatings employers to take advantage of the wide range of apprenticeships available, to help recruit the next generation of talent into a career in the coatings industry. Apprenticeships can equip young professionals with the skills to set them up for a career in their chosen industry.

BCF's Apprenticeship Service can help paints, inks and wallcoverings companies find and hire new apprentices

across all disciplines and functions and can also help larger coatings companies spend their UK Apprenticeship Levy funds. The service has been purpose-built for BCF Members by the Apprenticeship Training Agency (ATA). There are around 600 available apprenticeship programmes in England, and with at least 95% of the training costs being funded by the government, apprenticeships are a cost-effective way of developing the knowledge and skills of the workforce.

The ATA can work with employers to put individuals through apprenticeships or whole teams. For any department within your business, there will be a range of relevant apprenticeship programmes at appropriate levels to suit all members of staff, regardless of experience including Accounts and Finance, HR, Sales, Procurement, Administration, IT and Cyber Security. The services provided by the ATA are available for both small and large organisations, and the service will be tailored to suit the business's specific needs. Employers will have direct access to a designated account manager who will be able to answer any questions they have and provide support whenever they need it.

Employers can also take advantage of BCF’s agreement with Tiro, a specialist trainer provider for science and technology apprenticeships, which will also give funding for the BCF’s Coatings Training Institute courses. Tiro’s level 3 Laboratory Technician and Science Manufacturing Technician apprenticeships will both utilise six modules from the Coatings Training Institute as the knowledge element of the apprenticeship.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The Foot protection standard is EN ISO 20345. All Protective footwear is designed to a standard according to its requirements for certain tasks. On protective footwear the label showing this is usually located on the inside of the ‘tongue’ on each boot, where the boot size is usually located.

List of codes for Protective footwear standards:

• SB – This stands for ‘Safety Basic’. These boots can withstand 200 joules of force. A basic safety shoe used in many workplaces including warehouses.

• SBP – These are the same as SB boots but include a metal plate in the middle for extra protection.

• S1 – Specialised anti-static boots with extra insulation, plus resistant to fuel, making them a mainstay in oil rigs and other fuel-based industries.

• S1P – The same as S1 but feature a metal plate across the middle of the boot for extra protection.

• S2 – These boots have better water protection.

• S3 – These feature a specialised mid-sole against penetration. Worn on most Construction sites for external works and a standard expected by many major contractors

• S4 – These are classed as safety wellies. They have all the features of an S1 boot, but with significantly better waterproof and leak-proof functionality.

• S5 – S4 boots, but with better protection.

Sustainability is a hot topic across the construction sector, but for many professional painters and decorators improving sustainability can feel like a big undertaking. However, it can be the answer to unlocking new work. Dulux Decorator Centre believes that small changes can make a significant difference, Duncan Lochead, DDC’s Commercial Sustainability Manager, explores the steps businesses can take to become greener.

Small steps make a huge difference

Choose low VOC products

When choosing paint for a project, one of the simplest ways to drive down emissions is choosing water-based paints and coatings for both the walls and trim. Whilst solvent-based products have traditionally ruled in terms of durability, advances in water-based formulations mean that the products available on the market today can deliver similar results. They also have the added benefit of being more sustainable thanks to lower Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) content.

VOCs are chemical vapours that are greenhouse gases and therefore contribute to global warming, rising sea levels and ground level pollution. Exposure to high levels of VOCs can also have negative effects on the health of the applier and occupant. It is important to consider that they may not be suitable for occupation for some time after the paint has been applied, which can cause major disruption to residents.

Water-based trim products and wall paints like the Dulux Trade Airsure range combats these issues. Water-based products are also quick drying, as well as reducing disruption for customers, this also means decorators can complete the job faster.

Extend maintenance cycles

When a space needs redecorating the customer will be looking to the painter to deliver top-quality results that last. Choosing durable paints and coatings is therefore the key to customer satisfaction. Can recycling is quick and easy to do with the right partner. For example, Dulux Decorator Centre’s can recycling scheme enables customers to drop off clean, empty paint cans on their next visit to store, or Dulux Decorator Centre can collect empty paint cans when delivering to site.

If paint cans are partially full at the end of a job, DDC can work with professional painters and decorators to donate it to good causes such as Community RePaint, a UK wide paint reuse network, sponsored by Dulux, that aims to collect leftover paint and redistribute it at an affordable cost, so nothing goes to waste.

It is also important to think about the durability of the tools and accessories used to ensure that they will stand the test of time and can be used across multiple jobs (rather than discarded after one use). This will reduce waste and cut down on the cost of replacement tools. It is also advisable to use products with recyclable packaging. For example, it is estimated that over two million sealant cartridges end up in landfill each week in the UK, but using foil packed caulk will significantly reduce this.

Sustainability can be achieved by taking small, simple steps like choosing durable, water-based paints and coatings and considering ways to recycle or donate materials once the job is finished. These actions will help to improve your business’ sustainability credentials and can help to win new business through positive word of mouth, or even put your business in front of larger contractors looking for an applier with a sustainable mindset.

This room at a stately home in Stamford was renewed with Wallrock on the panels, painted with Little Greene Emulsion, with Little Greene Eggshell on the woodwork.

Lethbridge London were delighted to work on this very early and rather unusual Georgian House. Sitting back off the main high street, the enormous double height drawing room was where Syrie Maugham created her ‘all white room’ in 1927. The current owners have carefully preserved the history of the house while adding their own style.

LIFEGUARD HUT GETS RESCUED

CHAMPIONING THE IMPORTANCE OF HEALTH AND WELLBEING

There will always be times when projects come along that are outside our comfort zone. They might be work projects like a massive property exterior to renovate or even personal projects like moving house. Even thinking about them can feel stressful. I know how it feels. I’ve moved house and even moved country more than a dozen times. I’ve taken on decorating projects that took months of full-time work, and I’m just about to take on our biggest project yet – setting up a creative and craft centre

So, from my experience and tips from people whose advice I respect, I’ve come up with a few ideas that might help us think about taking on big, daunting projects...

How to tackle Daunting Projects

Daunting projects are good

As humans, we love having purpose, and we love having a sense of achievement. There’s nothing like taking on a big project to focus our mind and our energies in a very satisfying way. As long as we’re not fooling ourselves by taking on something that really is totally beyond our skills or resources, taking on daunting projects is a great way to grow as a person and as a business.

Reframe nervousness

We all feel stress in our lives, but sometimes we can reframe stress as aliveness, focus, and caring. Actor Ian McKellen has admitted that he feels sick with nerves before he goes onto the stage, and he’s one of his generation’s most experienced and skilled actors, but those nerves soon turn into laser-focused energy when he’s on stage. The nerves are just his body and brain preparing to perform at a top level. The nerves are a good thing! It shows he cares, it shows he’s ready. So be like Ian McKellen... Remember your skills

When I’m faced with a complicated video or photo shoot, I’ll often get a bit nervous. I used to be the same when starting a decorating job for a new customer, especially if it was a very expensive property. But then, in my head, I just picture myself doing the task, a task I’ve done a hundred thousand times – lifting a paintbrush or taking a photograph. Yes, every job is different and will have new challenges, but you’ve gained a whole bundle of skills and experience in your life, use what you know, build on what you know, and get to it

Perspective and disaster

When I feel nervous about a big project, I try to think of two things – perspective and disaster. Firstly, perspective: humans have taken on far bigger projects than me. Secondly, disaster: what’s the worst that could happen? How realistic is that worst thing? And what can we do to reduce the likelihood of the worst thing happening to almost zero?

Break it down

No projects are just a massive blob, they can all be broken down into manageable chunks. While working as a wildlife conservationist in South Africa, I had to repair a breached dam after a flood. It needed tonnes of earth and hundreds of sandbags to fix it. It was daunting. We did it one bag at a time.

Then we had another flood, another breach. We’d done it once, so we did it again. One bag at a time. The same goes for any complex project, just break it down.

Plan, then review regularly

Brian Tracy, author of the curiously titled but useful book Eat That Frog once wisely wrote, “Every minute you spend in planning saves 10 minutes in execution.” Planning is worth it. How much time do you need, which materials, equipment, personnel…?

Once you start your project, review where you are and determine if there’s anything else you need to consider. A different filler? Better tools? When stopping for a cuppa, spending just a few minutes reviewing is so much more useful than scrolling on your phone.

Visualise the end

When faced with a formidable project, visualising how it will be once done is a great motivator for cracking on with it. This is a technique used often by sportspeople. They visualise running the race, getting the gold medal, scoring the goals, or lifting the trophy.

Just start

James Clear, the author of the brilliant book Atomic Habits, recently wrote in his weekly email, “It's rarely doing the work that is hard; it's starting the work.”

To get a daunting project done, however much planning and research you may need to do – it will never get done if you don’t start it. So get cracking.

Blitz it

Someone I greatly respect recently said to me that the harder you work at the beginning of a project, the greater the benefit further down the line, and the less likely you’ll have to work your arse off if, or when, you fall behind schedule. If you know you’ve given it your all from the beginning of the project, you can’t be disappointed in your own effort.

Celebrate

There’s always something else to do when we run our own businesses. Another project, another quote. Marketing. Accounts…

But you should always take some time to celebrate your successes, whether it’s a bottle of wine, a nice meal, a weekend break… You deserve it

When working from height is part of the day-to-day, it can be easy to get complacent when using ladders and platforms. However, the Health and Safety Executive report that falls from height are still the main cause of fatal injury in the UK workplace. Kris Hallee, Head of Product Development at Werner, discusses five ways to prevent them.

5 ways to prevent falls from height

Choose the Right Ladder

It is easy to feel overwhelmed by choice as there are so many ladders available on the market. However, it is important to do some research and make certain that it’s fit for purpose before investing.

Ladders that aren’t quite the right height may cause the user to overreach which can affect balance. Equally, choosing a ladder that is insufficient for the load it will be used to carry is unsafe. Therefore, it is vital to consider who will be using the ladder and for what.

Regular Training

Regular training is recommended when it comes to the use of ladders. Regulations can change and better equipment and ways of working can be updated.

Not only this, but decorators will benefit from getting to know the labels to look out for when purchasing top-quality equipment, such as the EN 131 standard label, which is attached to ladders that have been through meticulous testing to ensure they meet the appropriate safety standard for professional use.

Declutter the Workspace

Of course, a decorator isn’t going to be caught without the right tools for the job. Easy access to paintbrushes, pots, tape and pencils, is essential. However, if they are not in a designated place, they can be easy to trip over, which risks injury.

Making use of ladder accessories, such as utility buckets, and job caddies that attach to ladder tops can prevent this. The added benefit of these is an extended workstation which reduces the risk of injury when going up and down rungs to grab what’s needed.

Frequent Ladder Audits

While it may seem time-consuming, a ladder should be inspected every time it is used. It isn’t safe to assume that because it was in good shape the day before, it is going to be in working order the next.

Signs of damage may not be obvious without a detailed inspection and taking a small amount of time to run through a safety checklist is well worth it, if it prevents a serious injury, or even worse, a fatality whilst at work. This should include checking all stiles, rungs and surfaces.

Limit Distractions

Avoiding falls from height requires undivided attention. However, there may be several distractions on-site, especially if the workplace is particularly busy or loud. Therefore, it is best to avoid further distraction by not using headphones, smartphones or getting lost in conversation when working on ladders. In addition, check your surroundings and pay attention to any obstacles and fire exits that may be blocked.

It is also advisable to recognise the impact of anything that could cause a break in focus, such as stress, physical pain, or feeling the need to rush a job. Find

“ UP technique ”

The entrance and stairs of this period home in South Wales had become tired, so the owners decided to get in a quality professional to give it an overhaul. Jason Gunter tells us about the work he carried out...

Papering over the cracks

Our brief from the client on this project was really quite simple, redecorate the space to a professional standard. Of course, I was more than happy to oblige!

The first job was to remove the multiple layers of old paper from the walls. The last time that new wallpaper was hung it had been done directly on top of some older paper, which was an absolute pain to remove, even with the use of an industrial Earlex steam stripper.

Once this was all out of the way, we washed down the walls to remove the remaining distemper and sealed them with a coat of Zinsser Gardz.

With all the old decorative materials out of the way, it became apparent that the base plaster needed a fair amount of work to make good. We used Toupret Interior Filler to deal with any large holes and cracks, sanded down with dustless sanding systems from Festool and a Mirka LEROS and another coat of Gardz over the top.

This provided us with a great base to install 1400 lining paper above the dado, ready for Anaglypta papers to be installed.

All the ceilings, cornice, archways and corbels were spray finished with Tikkurila Nova 2 using a Graco 390 Airless Sprayer, before we moved onto the woodwork.

The clients specified that they wanted to keep the handrail and tops of the newels in a stained varnish that they had done themselves, so we

used tesa Precision to tape it off and create a straight edge to work to with the gloss.

Knotting solution was applied on bare timber before priming all the woodwork with Caparol Haft Primer due to the existing oil based finishes. As there was only a small amount of new timber, I stuck with the Haft Primer for the whole job, and after two coats we had a solid base ready for finishing with two coats of gloss.

The client picked out two papers from Anaglypta, Milford Plain was installed above the dado, and Alexander below, which were hung with Solvite paste.

Once these were dry, we then proceeded to paint the walls above the dado with Johnstone’s Trade Vinyl Matt in a cream shade, and Acrylic Durable Eggshell in brilliant white for the lower half.

We originally planned to have the job completed in four weeks, but did end up running over by three days in order to ensure the work was done to a high standard and not rushed, and the client was absolutely delighted with the results.

Ceilings and woodwork complete, lining paper in place, time for the papering. Spraying the intricate ceiling ornaments was a great time saver, but also brings excellent results. Hand rails and the top of newels were masked off during redecoration, at the request of the client.

All windows great and small

Preservation is the name of the game, and this is especially true of historic buildings. PDA Member firm Douglas Gillie and Son Painting and Decorating had the task of protecting the external paintwork on a beautiful grade I listed 18th Century mansion in Belford, North Northumberland and returning the paintwork to the original Georgian colours. Douglas outlined to The Decorator how this extensive project was undertaken...

The hall had been renovated and converted into private residential apartments in the 1980s after the building was left derelict during WW2. The residents of the 16 apartments are responsible for managing and maintaining the heritage of the building.

The aim of the project was mainly to preserve and protect the external paintwork, including 126 sash windows and doors, given that it is a grade I listed heritage building, but also to change the colours of all windows, doors and metalwork back to original Georgian colours. All colours chosen were from the Farrow and Ball palette, windows and doors in Oxford Stone, gutters and downpipes London Stone, railings, grids and the main entrance doors in Hague Blue.

With the building being so large, it was important to have an organised plan in place for how the work was going to be undertaken and when each elevation was going to be completed, with consistent communication with the residents maintained throughout to ensure it all ran smoothly.

The project was split in to two phases, phase one being south elevations of the villa and wings, west elevation of the villa, east elevation of villa and the east pavilion. Phase two consisted of the north elevations, west elevation of the wing and block of 17 garage doors.

The use of a cherry picker was required for access to the upper-level windows and metalwork, with all surfaces correctly prepared and painted with a traditional oil-based system as specified.

The sash windows and doors required cleaning to remove any dirt and algae, scraping and sanding down to remove loose and flaking paint, and then putty where necessary. Any bare wood was base coated and primed, including the sash bars where putty had been removed.

The windows then required filling to remove surface defects, sanding down, sealing and re-glazing where necessary prior to a first coat of Sandtex Trade Flexible Primer Undercoat and finished with two coats of Sandtex Trade Eggshell X-tra.

Although no major issues arose during the project, there were a few small obstacles to overcome such as making sure the lawns remained undamaged when using the cherry picker. We overcame this by hiring a cherry picker on tracks which is compact and could be driven around the narrow gravel paths via remote control, the stabilisers extend out and sit on top of pads to self-level which kept the lawns in good condition. Another small obstacle to overcome was removing and painting the ventrolla sash windows to ensure the seals remained paint free.

We were very pleased with the finish, and the project was an overall success with both phases being completed over the summer. The colours used compliment the natural stonework and Palladian features of the building very well, and most importantly the windows, doors, gutters and downpipes are protected and will be looking good for years to come.

The cherry picker chosen for the work featured tracks and extending stablisers to avoid damaging the lawns. Hague Blue was chosen from the Farrow & Ball palette for use on the main entrance doors. Other work included repainting metal railings, gutters and downpipes. All 17 garage doors were also included in the project, which were all finished with Zinsser AllCoat. All 126 windows were fully stripped back, repaired and prepped, before priming and finishing with two coats of Sandtex Trade Eggshell X-tra, all using hand-tools.

When working off step ladders or a hop-up (Step Stool), it makes sense to use equipment with the widest treads, ideally where your whole foot is supported. This ensures maximum comfort, allowing me to work faster and be more productive.

A great feature is the pivoting safety rail with a built-in tool tray. It is incredible because when used, it provides an additional leaning point that steadies you whilst working, providing three points of contact when standing or moving up and down the Jumbo Step. To put the safety rail into position, just lift it until you hear a click – it is then locked into position. To unlock, use the bright orange ‘one finger trigger hinge’ on each side at the same time and pivot the safety rail back into its storage position.

The tool tray can hold both a cordless drill and an impact driver at the same time, plus other essential tools like a hammer, screwdrivers, a scraper etc. It also has a large compartment to hold smaller tools and fixings, which free up your hands, and two sturdy hanging hooks – I use mine for paint kettles, small scuttles, and a washing kit.

Wooster Speed Bucket is a well-designed product, boasting a metal handle with an indent, so it stays put if hanging from a hook. The rim has a thick round outer edge all around, with a straight edge facing inwards that allows my paintbrush to be wiped back every now and then. I carried out some major restoration work on an Art Deco home, with the client’s main brief that they hated dust! The property had various antiques, so dust management was very important.

Graphenstone, the world’s most certified eco paint company, will launch an exclusive paint collection with the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, the world’s oldest public museum celebrating 340 years.

Taking some of the Ashmolean’s most treasured objects as inspiration, the range comprises 16 carefully curated and complimentary shades that are practical for both home and commercial use. Colours range from the burnt orange of the maple wood used by master violin maker, Antonio Stradivari, to the vibrant teal of the feathers in John Ruskin’s Study of a Kingfisher. Each colour has been chosen and matched to the original artworks by the Graphenstone team.

Graphenstone is made using the highest quality lime and sustainable natural minerals, perfectly suited to both modern and traditional interiors. Containing Graphene, a nontoxic pure carbon that is the strongest material known to science, it offers exceptional performance, durability, and coverage.

Graphenstone’s healthy paints are petrochemical and plastic free, with only trace elements of VOCs (less than 0.1%), free from carcinogens, hazardous chemicals, and preservatives. The paints are virtually odour free so will not release harmful gasses or synthetic additives often associated with breathing difficulties and allergies.

The environmental impact is rigorously controlled, and the manufacturing process is powered entirely by renewables with waste water being reused in the production process. All packaging is cardboard, and the paint tubs are made using 100% post-consumer recycled plastic.

Continuing its collaboration with the National Trust, Little Greene presents National Trust Papers III, a versatile new collection of wallpapers transforming historical design into a timeless collection.

National Trust Papers III is an authentic collection of eight historic wallpaper designs adapted and recoloured for use within the modern interior. Comprising 45 colourways, this collection represents over 200 years of decoration.

Each design has been created from original source material found at three of the National Trust’s historic houses, Oxburgh Hall and Felbrigg Hall in Norfolk, and Newark Park in Gloucestershire, with the addition of one design that has been recoloured and revived from the Little Greene archive.

Employing traditional methods of printing that have remained unchanged for over 100 years, the collection comprises an array of hand-painted birds, stylised florals and scrolling trails, as well as a traditional ‘Toile de Jouy’.

The National Trust Papers III collection offers a new approach to pattern colouration within the Little Greene collections, reinterpreting the colour

drenching paint trend that has led to enveloping, intimate interiors, with many of the wallpapers featuring bold tonal colourways. These designs include Poppy Trail in shades of Masquerade pink, and Hoja in four colourways, including Hellebore and Air Force Blue.

A contribution from the sale of every roll of Little Greene wallpaper is made in support of the National Trust’s important work caring for 500 places, including 780 miles of coastline, historic sites, 250,000 hectares of countryside and green spaces, ensuring that people and nature thrive – now and forever.
