Dear Members, Firstly, I hope you like the new look of this month’s edition, with a new typeface and re-designed content pages. I’m sure you will agree that we have a magazine to be proud of. Don’t forget that it’s available in both hard copy, online at www.the-decorator.co.uk and a PDF version on our website. It’s hard to believe that we’re into the last quarter of 2019. As ever, time flies. It’s been a busy year at our Association with numerous activities and events carried out during the past nine months. I would like to thank everyone who has contacted us at head office to say congratulations and thank you on the organisation and execution of this year’s Premier Trophy Awards. We do appreciate your feedback. Speaking of the Awards, application forms for both our Premier Trophy Awards and Apprentice of the Year are available to download on our website. If you have a piece of work that fits one of our seven categories, and you feel could be a potential winner, why not submit it by the deadline date of 10 January 2020? Likewise, if one of your apprentices is showing promise, enter them into one of our apprentice competitions which will be running during the month of May. Whichever one you enter, if you achieve a winning entry, we look forward to meeting you at the Plasterers’ Hall, London on 2 July next year! To celebrate the PDA’s 125th Anniversary, our networking event is at the spectacular Oulton Hall, Leeds on 9 November. We have a range of activities throughout the day, culminating in a Masquerade Ball and Dinner, live entertainment and our Apprentice Competition Awards during the evening. It promises to be a great weekend, so do come and join us. On 26 and 27 November, the PDA will be at Stand 64 at the National Painting & Decorating Show, Coventry. Our AGM will be held Tuesday 26 November in the Chairman’s Lounge. Please come along and support this key, once-a-year Members meeting. You’ll also have the chance to win a stunning Graco hand held spray machine on the day! Details of the AGM are on page 14, and for electing Members to the Board are on page 16 of this magazine. During the past two years we have participated in two major projects, one with the CITB, and the other with our European Colleagues in UNIEP. The CITB project involved the recruitment, training and qualifying of 4 new NVQ Assessors, and financial support for the achievement of L2 or L3 NVQ in Decorative Finishing & Industrial Painting. This has been successfully completed with 70% of the cost of the project funded by the CITB. The two-year project with UNIEP was aimed at attracting more young people into Painting & Decorating and to improve work-based Learning. The project is now is reaching its conclusion. The PDA has also been selected to be involved, together with 23 other partners in a new three-year Painting Skills Academy Project. This will develop a European Level 5 Painting & Decorating qualification (levels 1 to 4 and 6 already exist) and the structure to deliver transnational joint programs enabling learners to complete training periods at various European learning locations. Meanwhile, our portfolio of Associate Partners and Manufacturers continues to grow apace. I’ve held numerous meetings with them over the past months and over the next year I hope to secure further Member offers, discounts and benefits. Best wishes

• Following the reasonably robust growth in GDP in the first quarter of the year, it contracted by 0.2% in the second one. • Construction output declined by 1.3% in the second quarter of the year after growing by 1.4% in the first. However, it was still 1.5% higher on an annualised basis than a year ago. • The Markit/CIPS construction PMI fell to 45 in August, down from 45.3 in July and well below the no change threshold of 50. • Total R&M activity dropped by 2.6% in the second quarter of the year, after growth of 3% in the first.

REVERSE VAT DELAYED TO 2020 The implementation of Reverse VAT has been delayed by 12 months following successful efforts from a coalition of industry organisations to lobby the government. The decision means that Reverse VAT will now come into effect on 1 October 2020, a year after it was initially planned on 1 October 2019. The industry demonstrated the power of collaboration, with FMB fronting the campaign and Build UK working behind the scenes to successfully affect change. Importantly, the coalition made the case that the impact of the changes were not fully understood within the industry in addition to the ongoing uncertainty over Brexit. Companies in the supply chain should use the extra time wisely – you can read more about the change and how it will affect your business, including a practical guide which can be found at www.tinyurl.com/reversevat

NEIL PAYS A VISIT TO THE FORWARD THINKERS AT F&B

PDA CHIEF EXECUTIVE Neil Ogilvie paid a visit to paint and wallpaper manufacturer Farrow & Ball to learn more about how the eco-friendly brand is preparing for its future. The PDA Associate Member has been based in Dorset since 1946, when it was founded by John Farrow and Richard Ball, and has prided itself on combining time honoured artisanal methods with cutting edge technology and sustainable practices ever since. On a guided tour of the Farrow & Ball factory, Neil was given a valuable insight into the handcrafted nature of Farrow & Ball paint and wallpaper, and the dedicated expert craftsmen who bring every tin and roll into being before it’s sent to stockists across the world. Meeting with the brand’s marketing team, who share the site with the factory and Farrow & Ball Wimborne showroom, Neil led discussions on how the PDA and Farrow & Ball can keep working together closely in the coming years. “I found my recent visit to Farrow & Ball incredibly interesting,” says Neil. “The team gave me a great insight into the company’s forward planning for its products, both its current offerings and what’s in the pipeline in the future. It’s a pleasure for the PDA to be associated with such a forward-thinking company.”

Advice from our Associates

DETOX YOUR DEBT By Ann O’Connor AS WE’RE OVER halfway through 2019, it is an auspicious time for businesses to consider how they can go through a bad debt detox. Thinking about how to reduce the stresses and financial strains of ‘non-paying customers’, and controlling your business debts is crucial, especially in the current climate. Early identification of ‘bad debts’ underpins business stability. Here are some useful steps to help you manage your cash flow and avoid bad debts. Show your customers they cannot take advantage of you.

To avoid this, take a varied approach to each case. View each customer individually and decide which of your processes would be more effective; based on value, knowing your customer and their financial circumstances. You don’t want to be chasing a company 60 days down the line if you know they are already in financial difficulties; you want to get in there early or else your chances of getting payment will become trickier.

Get back on track

Know the credit worthiness of your customer

Long overdue invoices, even if they amount to £10, £20, or £100, can be seen as a serious sin by a small business owner. It can be tempting to spend just as much time pursuing small debts as large debts, but it makes sense to prioritise. If your business is struggling with numerous overdue invoices, why not rank them highest to lowest value, focussing your efforts on those of the highest value first.

Approaching your customers Having a communications plan in place for how you intend to approach customers you have extended credit to is fundamental. Early identification of bad debts underpins business stability. Such a plan should spell out the days before and after an invoice is due, as well as the methods you are going to use (letter, email, phone or text). Consistently following the same routine allows your customers to find ways to delay paying you. For example, if your strategy is to always send a reminder letter on day 30, make a phone call on day 60 and refer to a debt collection agency on day 90; your customer will likely realise they have a further 30/60 days after the due date of the invoice to pay before it gets to a collection agency.

It’s important to know your customer before you extend them credit. Credit checking is relatively inexpensive and straightforward for businesses to carry out. You need to identify customers who might be considered ‘High Risk’ or unworthy of credit. Credit checking will show your customers’ payment behaviour, credit history and ability to pay in the future, providing you with peace of mind. If you want to keep your costs down, try focussing on credit checking the customers you know less about, and from whom the potential amount of business you may gain is significant. Do collect all the relevant contact information, including email for your customer.

Review your credit policy A credit policy spells out how a business will decide who is given credit, payment date and terms, the limits set on outstanding balances and the process to deal with overdue or unpaid invoices. Easy credit terms can be a blessing when it comes to maximising sales growth, but it can be a curse if those customers don’t pay. Make sure your credit policy is clear and concise, ensuring it specifies timeframes which trigger specific actions such as a phone call or a chase email.

Know when you need support As a general rule, it’s advisable to contact a debt collection specialist agency when your reminder phone calls, letters or emails have not worked. It is important to keep in mind that the sooner a debt collection agency is passed an overdue account, the more likely they are to recover what’s owed to you successfully. If stated in your terms of business, costs relating to debt collection may be passed on to customers who don’t pay.

Ann O’Connor is a senior adviser in the debt collection team at Wright Hassall. Ann has 16 years’ of practical experience in debt recovery, specialising in recovering late or unpaid debts on behalf of client’s businesses of all sizes, industries and sectors.

TOP TIPS FOR DIY SELF-ASSESSMENT TAX AS A SPECIALIST contractor, you stand to maximise your earning potential by valuing your worth and managing projects the way you work best. Yet, as you’ll be aware, it comes with obligations, not least of which is the Self-Assessment tax return that rolls around annually. It’s a myth that, if you file your tax return early, you also have to pay your tax at the same time – the deadline for paying any taxes remains 31 January, no matter when the tax return is filed. By submitting early, you can use the months leading up to January to maximise your earning potential. It’s easy to lose track of your outgoings when managing multiple projects, but it’s vital to keep a record of all eligible tax breaks. Materials, tools, uniform and safety wear are just some of the expenses you could claim back. Go through your bank statements, emails and receipts, to ensure you’ve not missed any.

Your PDA Membership fee can be logged as an expense, saving you around £50 on your tax liability! Monitoring your expenses is much easier when you have the right tools for the job. By going digital with your receipts, you can record your purchases in a single place, eliminating the risk of losing or forgetting about your paperwork. The GoSimpleTax app allows you to take a picture of your receipt and upload it straight to your tax return. So when you’re popping into your local trade supplier, you can instantly log expenses on the go.

PDA Members are entitled to a 15% discount off GoSimpleTax.

Advice from our Associates THE ‘BATTLE OF THE FORMS’ – WHOSE STANDARD Ts & Cs APPLY? BUSINESSES WOULD IDEALLY prefer to rely on their respective standard conditions. But in order to be of any use at all, these have to be successfully incorporated into the contract between the respective parties. Businesses regularly use standard terms and conditions, sometimes in the formation of a contract, businesses present each other with their standard terms resulting in two conflicting documents jockeying for precedence; the so-called ‘Battle of the Forms’. Businesses using standard terms or buying products on standard terms need to take all reasonable steps to bring the conditions to the other side's attention. The best way is to point out the conditions expressly in pre-contract correspondence. However, this gesture almost invites the other side to negotiate the terms – which is precisely what standard terms are designed to avoid.   The difficulty is in determining whose terms prevail. If each side seeks to impose its own terms, there is no acceptance at all. In practice, this means that the last set of terms, dispatched prior to acceptance or performance (the last shot fired in the battle of the forms), will prevail. If you decide not to negotiate standard terms which you are presented with, make sure that you have read the terms between the parties before the contract has been concluded. Keep a record of the terms you are signing up to and most of all if you are worried about the terms you need to seek proper advice. If you do find yourself in a dispute or just want some advice, speak to a member of the team at Wright Hassall to discuss your options and the early dispute resolution strategies available to you. www.wrighthassall.co.uk

IS THERE A LEGAL ENTITLEMENT TO COMPASSIONATE LEAVE? EMPLOYEES MAY SOMETIMES need time off work to deal with personal and family problems. Employers may need to consider a request for time off on compassionate grounds, employees may also require time off to attend funerals or for a bereavement. Currently, there is no legal obligation for an employer to provide either paid or unpaid time off work as compassionate leave or bereavement leave. However, some employers may choose to exercise discretion and permit employees either paid or unpaid time off for this purpose. Alternatively, employers may have a written policy of granting time off for bereavement purposes or on certain defined compassionate grounds, such that employees are entitled to the time off under their contract of employment. In either case, the employer should be consistent and maintain trust and confidence when agreeing any time off.

How much time should be permitted? In deciding how much bereavement or compassionate leave to grant employees, the employer should take a number of factors into account. For example, if an employee requires compassionate leave when a family member is ill, the closeness of the relationship between the employee and the family member, whether or not other people are available to help with any emergency or care arrangements, are examples of the relevant factors to consider.

Whilst there is a statutory right for employees to take reasonable (unpaid) time off to deal with an emergency situation involving their dependant, which includes the death of a dependant, this right applies only to take steps once the emergency has happened and not, in the case of a death, to actually take additional time to grieve. Where an employee may require extended time off due to bereavement, in the absence of a specific policy that provides for paid leave, it is good practice to permit the employee to choose between taking the time off as either unpaid leave or as paid leave from their annual leave entitlement if the employer can accommodate this.

How should employers manage bereavement in the workplace? The ACAS guidance on managing bereavement in the workplace recognises that bereavement can be challenging for employers to manage. Employees may need to take time off unexpectedly, find their performance is impacted, or be temporarily unable to perform certain roles. An employer has a duty of care to their employees generally. The guidance recommends that a compassionate and supportive approach demonstrates that the employer values its employees. It also helps build commitment, reduces sickness absence, and helps retain the workforce in the long term. The ACAS guidance suggests that a conversation about when the employee anticipates returning to work may not be appropriate in the first days of bereavement. However

PDA Members get free access to the Markel Law Hub, register via the PDA website and use your token code on the 2019 Membership Card. it is important to open a discussion around how the employee is coping, to discuss the employer’s policy on bereavement (if any), when they might be ready to return to work, and any adjustments that might help with this (such as a return to work under a gradual phased return). Employers should bear in mind that bereavement is a personal issue. Employees have the right to keep this confidential under data protection legislation and under the mutual obligation of trust and confidence between the employer and employee. Good practice would be for someone, such as the employee’s line manager, to speak with them and ask them what they would like their colleagues to be told, if anything.

Future legislation Under new legislation, from April 2020 primary carers, not just parents, will be entitled to at least two weeks’ leave from work following the death of a child. Primary carers include adopters, foster parents and guardians, as well as more informal groups such close relatives or family friends who have taken responsibility for the child's care in the absence of parents. This new right to time off also covers parents who suffer a stillbirth 24 weeks or more into pregnancy. From that date, employees with at least 26 weeks’ service will be entitled to be paid for the time off at a statutory rate.

Kelly Young Medusa Décor Ltd I am the Managing Director of a team of painters and decorators who offer professional finishes for commercial, domestic and heritage properties. At 16, I started an apprenticeship and gained a wealth of hands-on experience, backed up with formal training, achieving several City & Guilds qualifications, including Level 2 & 3 decorative and Level 6 Construction Site Management and Engineering. I also qualified as a teacher and assessor in painting and decorating, with A1 units and CertEd in education. Driven by attention to detail, creativity and vision, I am looking forward to helping in move the Association forward.

My entire career has been in the painting and decorating sector and I have a lot of experience to bring to the PDA Board. After completing a P&D Course at college I joined the family business in 1965. I’m married and two of my three children are also in the family business. Our business has diversified into special coatings and associated products and in 2018 we celebrated 100 years of trading! I’m very proud of our heritage and our work which has won and been runners-up in different categories of the PDA Trophy Awards. I would like to carry on representing the medium size businesses on the PDA Board.

I am a past President of the North East Region (1980) and the Norh East Regional Honorary Treasurer since 2003. A member of the National Council and Executive Committee since 1980, I was elected as National Treasurer in 2009/10 and 2010/2011 and from 2015 to the present. I would like to continue in the post and to help our Chief Executive, Neil Ogilvie, control our expenditure and assist the new Management Board with the benefit of my long experience in the affairs of the PDA. I look forward to the opportunity of serving the Association for a further year, if I am re-elected.

Categories 5 & 6 Stephen Bagnall Bagnall Group I am the MD of our fifth generation family business established in 1875 where we directly employ over 650 people, have been on the National Council of PDF and PDA continuously for over 20 years. Over many years I have lobbied for the best interests of painting enterprises large and small to ensure that the needs of our specialist craft are heard.

NEW UNIEP PROJECT BUILD UK MEMBERS REDUCE PAYMENT TIME BY OVER 10% BUILD UK MEMBERS are continuing to improve their payment performance based on data submitted under the Duty to Report on Payment Practices and Performance. Build UK began publishing this information just 12 months ago, ahead of the Cabinet Office confirming its intention to take account of payment performance when awarding major public sector contracts. Since then, the average time taken to pay invoices by Contractor members has reduced by five days to 40 days, with the average percentage of invoices paid beyond terms falling from 34% to 25%. Construction is the only sector that is benchmarking performance and the increased transparency is starting to change the industry’s culture and drive improved practices. Companies across the supply chain are taking action to improve their payment systems, creating the opportunity to tackle the wider issues associated with the high risk, low margin construction business model. For the first time, Build UK has included within its table the percentage of invoices paid within 60 days, in order to reflect the increasing use of this metric within the industry. Build UK also continues to provide information on the payment performance of central Government departments. Across Government, 96% of invoices are paid within 30 days with 12 of the 16 departments paying over 95% of their invoices within 30 days.

THE PDA’S TWO-year project with partners from the International Association of Painting Contractors (UNIEP) is reaching its conclusion. The final outcomes of the project to attract more young people to Painting & Decorating and improve Work Based Learning, will be included in the next magazine. However, the PDA has been informed of their involvement, together with 23 other partners, in a new three-year project. The PaintingSkillsAcademy (PSA) project will develop a European Level 5 Painting & Decorating qualification (levels 1 to 4 and 6 already exist) and the structure to deliver transnational joint programs, for learners to complete training periods at various European learning locations. This new PaintingSkillsAcademy will be a self-supporting organisation for initial and further vocational education and training for the European painting trade. The first meeting of all the partners is in December, when the project programme and detail will be disseminated.

TIME TO TAKE A DIGITAL DETOX IN YOUR EVERYDAY working life, it is likely that you frequently use digital devices to help run your business. Whether it’s trading online, carrying out your work on a computer, completing admin tasks or managing marketing and social media campaigns, you may find yourself staring at a screen for the majority of the day. Even when you’ve finished work for the day, there seems to be no let up. We live in a connected world which means our social lives are shared with friends and family online, so you feel compelled to open the social apps, stay in touch and catch up on what you’ve missed. And the next thing you know, you’ve spent hours browsing social posts, looking at funny videos and playing mobile games. Yet somehow, this constant need to remain connected has led to increased levels of stress, depression and isolation. Looking at electronic screens for longer than an hour has been found to have a negative effect on sleep, mood and concentration. In 2017, Deloitte found that 79% of 16-24 year olds checked their phone in the hour before they went to sleep, and 55% checked their phone within 15 minutes of waking up. Sound familiar? It’s time to put down that device and give yourself a welldeserved break: a digital detox! But, don’t worry, we’re not advocating you lock away your devices, just simply restrict the amount of time you spend on them. A digital detox can last as little as a few hours a day, or you could go to the extreme like Simon Cowell who stopped using his phone for 10 months. Whatever you decide to do, a digital detox is said to reduce stress and improve sleep, concentration and happiness, a must when you’ve had a hard day at work. And as an employer, it’s your responsibility to look after your own and your employees’ physical and mental wellbeing.

The Price Adjustment Formulae Indices are monthly indices used in conjunction with formula methods for adjusting construction contracts which are not fixed priced. They are sometimes known as the NEDO, Baxter or Osborne Indices. The formulae calculate the increase or decrease in contractors' costs over any period, to the nearest month. This method of reimbursement helps speed up payment to contractors and reduces administrative costs. The indices published above are for decorating work and are compiled from labour and materials costs. Series 3 is the latest series and recommended for use on all new contracts. Series 2 continues to be published for contracts which still require their use.

MUD, SWEAT AND TEARS By Julie Lawrenson of the Bell Group IT’S HARD TO believe that cancer will affect 1 in 3 people in the UK, however, it’s a rarity today not to know someone who has had cancer or someone who has been affected by this cruel disease. Like most ‘normal’ families, our world was shattered in 2011 when my dad was diagnosed with bowel cancer. After initially having surgery followed by months of gruelling chemotherapy, radiotherapy and a subsequent two year battle, my dad sadly passed away in April 2013. It’s fair to say that nothing prepares you for that painful journey or loss. As well as leaving an immediate sense of loss, anger and upset, the experience also left a profound sense of wanting to do something positive and give something back. The care my dad received was extremely good and we are forever grateful to the nursing teams in Bangor and Glan Clwyd hospitals for that. Over the past few years, family and friends have supported many charitable events and this year, the mantle fell to me! In May my youngest son, Josh decided he was going to enter us for the 5K Pretty Muddy version of Race for Life which each year raises vital funds for Cancer Research UK.

After the initial shock of learning I had less than 10 weeks to motivate myself from couch to 5k (running never having been a particular strong point for me) I actually began to enjoy my early evening encounters with my running shoes. Josh and I completed our race at Heaton Park, Manchester in July finishing in a credible 36 minutes after encountering 10 muddy, water ridden obstacles. Thanks to the generous donations from work colleagues, family and friends, we raised over £900. I am immensely proud of Josh and I know my dad would be proud of both of us.

A Story to Tell...

WHEN TINA ROOTS (formerly Collins) from PDA Member firm Cousins attended the PDA Trophy Awards in July, the Apprentice Competition brought back memories of her being the Apprentice winner in 2000. When we found out Tina was a previous winner we caught up with her to find out what had happened since the win... “I started an apprenticeship with Cousins when I was 18 years old, doing a day release course to complete NVQ 1,2 & 3 in Painting and Decorating and also gain a City and Guilds in Specialist Decorative finishes. I was unaware that my employer put me forward for the Trophy Awards Apprentice Competition. I received a letter outlining that I had been entered and I was asked if I was happy to participate, which I was pleased to do. The year I won was 2000, I was working at the Great Eastern Hotel, Liverpool Street at the time. I remember two judges visiting and watching me carry out certain tasks on site. They went through my college portfolio and asked me lots of questions on my work. I was invited to attend the ceremony which took place in The Worshipful Hall of Painters and Stainers. I was one of many apprentices who had been entered that year, and there were some incredibly talented people. It was fantastic winning the Trophy Awards Apprentice Competition, even now, it is still something of which I am very proud. It's a great achievement and will always put a smile on my face.”

1625ip and Ian Williams celebrate their new partnership over a mug of tea!

After the competition win, Tina completed her apprenticeship and carried on working as a Decorator on various projects for a few years, to gain more knowledge and build confidence. Projects ranged from refurbishments to new builds and some prestigious buildings. These allowed her to gain experience working with different materials and gave her a greater understanding of the trade. Tina rose through the ranks of Cousins from Foreman, Supervisor, Project Manager, and is currently a Contracts Manager, managing multiple clients. Tina said, “I gained so much knowledge, and the more knowledge you have, the more confidence you gain. It's not always easy, and some days it can be hard, but the result is so rewarding. My motto is always to take pride in your work and believe in yourself. “I enjoy my work, and I am extremely proud to be part of an amazing team at Cousins Ltd. Throughout my career I've worked with people who believed in me and gave me the opportunity to progress, which has put me where I am today.”

HOSTEL TO HOME

Tina receiving her Trophy and Certificate from the Painting and Decorating Federation National President, Rodney Greenhaulgh (left), back in June 2000.

“RATHER THAN A one-off donation, we can invest something that will continue to make an impact, helping lots of young people,” said Mike Turner, Executive Director at Ian Williams. Cut to September, and the PDA Member firm has partnered with lead youth homelessness charity, 1625 Independent People (1625ip). The Bristol based charity has several properties, helping young people find a safe space to live while they build a positive future for themselves. Ian Williams itself is very invested in having a positive impact in its community, from being energy conscious to running an Academy to help upskill young people. Both parties recognised that they had shared values and could do great work together. 1625ip has a hostel, Southwold House, situated close to Ian Williams head office, and while it provides a safe place for young people who are homeless, it needs a desperate facelift. Ian Williams are now excited to announce that work has begun and is due to be complete at the end of November, just in time for Christmas. Ian Williams have shown themselves as true leaders, galvanising their staff and other companies they work with to provide the best possible home for 1625ip’s young people. Adding to this are Triodos and Avon Wildlife Trust, who have worked hard on the gardens to provide a nurturing outside space, showing how change is possible when people and organisations come together.

TOOLSdown A QUICK Q&A WITH PDA MEMBER

Carl Ferri How long have you been a painter and decorator? 25+ years

Do you have a specialist area? Mainly working on interior and exterior residential property’s but I also offer specialist paint finishes and plastering services

How long have you been a Member of the PDA? Since 2005

How has membership of the PDA benefitted you? Being a member of the PDA has given me the confidence knowing that if ever a legal case were to occur (for or against me), I can get valuable free legal advice. Many years ago, a builder owing me money got the full force of a legal letter from the PDA, I got paid soon after that! I also like to keep up on the latest product news in the magazine.

How do you market your business? Are you on social media? Are you currently training any apprentices? No, but I’m about to take one on. My business runs mainly by word of mouth through years of repeat custom and referals, I also get good references on local forums. However, I’ve recently joined What are the most annoying problems you come across? Instagram to give it a try. Following on from other trades that have no pride in their work.

Do you have any tips on maintaining a successful business? Be polite honest and reliable with your clients, and if working in peoples homes treat it as if you would yours. My clients always comment on my tidiness.

What would you say to encourage young people to become a painter and decorator? It’s very satisfying seeing your finished projects with happy clients. It can keep you physically fit as you’re always on the move. If you work hard at it, it will be a good career. There is so much more to painting than just ‘painting’.

What do you most like about your job? Seeing customer satisfaction

What products would you recommend to other decorators? This isn’t very new to the decorating or general building world but, I’ve finally just invested in a dustless sanding system with the Mirka Deros sander and Nilfisk extractor. Virtually dust free sanding in someone’s home is a total game changer. I was constantly masking and isolating areas off and hovering up to keep up my high standard of cleaniness, now it’s so much faster and easier with minimum dust. I’m always keeping an eye out for tools, products and new paints coming in on the market. I’m also a recent convert to Benjamin Moore and Tikkurila paints.

TRAINING AND EDUCATION

DECORATORS GO WILD Decorating apprentices have enjoyed a unique outdoor adventure thanks to the Dulux Academy, Bell Group and Dulux charity partner The Outward Bound Trust (OBT). Eight apprentices from PDA Member firm Bell Group travelled to the Lake District last month to take part in a week long Brush with Adventure course sponsored by Dulux Academy. The apprentices were all pushed out of their comfort zone, taking on a host of activities they had never tried before from rock climbing to gorge walking, as part of the course run by the OBT. Designed to develop their skills in leadership, negotiation and teamwork, the course involved a three-day expedition with wild camping in remote locations. It was a far cry from the apprentices’ daily lives, but the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with each individual gaining a sense of pride in their achievements and an increased confidence they could translate into their professional development. Dulux has supported the OBT for more than 10 years raising over £1.7M which has enabled more than 100,000 people to take a journey of self-discovery through powerful, challenging, outdoor experiences. Vickie Mather, Dulux Academy Lead, said, “Dulux Academy was launched to professionalise the decorating industry. Being a great decorator is more than having great application skills. I’m really proud that for the third year, we have been able to provide opportunities like this that challenge and develop team working, confidence and resilience, all the life skills required for the future of our trade.” Anna Higham, Community Investment Manager from Bell Group, added, “Providing opportunities for our apprentices to gain life experiences and skills away from the working environment is vital to their development. The Outward Bound Trust and Dulux Academy support our goal to increase their potential and grow wellrounded individuals that we hope will be the future of our business. “It’s clear that the course has helped them realise that they can achieve much more than they may have previously believed and we’re looking forward to seeing them put their new skills into action in their training.” Earlier this year, the Dulux Academy was awarded Bronze for the ‘Best alignment of brand values during a CSR programme’ at the Corporate Engagement Awards 2019 in recognition of its work supporting young people through the Brush with Adventure course.

IW STAFF VOLUNTEER SKILLS TO HELP LOCAL STUDENTS Over summer, a group of 15 Ian Williams staff were privileged to act as career mentors for 25 pupils from nearby Chipping Sodbury School. The initiative was hosted in partnership with Future Frontiers, an award winning charity that works with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to raise career aspirations and drive academic performance. Future Frontiers believes that pupils from low-income families are less likely to enjoy school, less likely to see the value in their education, and are therefore more likely to under-achieve. By building partnerships between schools and local businesses, the Future Frontiers programme helps young people make the link between educational attainment and exciting career opportunities, motivating them at an important time as they make subject option choices or prepare to take GCSE examinations. For staff at Ian Williams, mentoring young people through potentially life-changing career decisions was a hugely rewarding experience. Staff began their journey with a coaching workshop, where they learnt the skills needed to motivate and engage with pupils. Over the course of four weeks, volunteer mentors helped pupils delve into careers that inspired them, find out more about the pathway to their dream job, and understand how education opens doors to career success. In the

final session, pupils enjoyed a video call with professional experts, including a zookeeper, a professional football coach and an animator, with many pupils now inspired to pursue their top career choice. Sian Pearce, Ian Williams’ Training and Development Manager added, “Getting involved with the Future Frontiers initiative fits hand in glove with Ian Williams’ approach to encourage young people, some of whom may not have had a privileged start to life, prepare for the future of work. A joint initiative between the Ian Williams’ Academy, Foundation and business as a whole, we were delighted with how many of our employees wanted to get involved and give up their time to coach, and hopefully guide the young people involved in the programme to discover and explore careers that inspire them. In fact, it would be fantastic if some of the students who successfully complete the programme and go on to achieve GCSEs, come back to join our Academy Apprentice programme to develop their careers further in the future.”

NEW QUALIFIED NVQ ASSESSORS

For more information, visit www.outwardbound.org.uk

The PDA’s two-year project for the recruitment, training and qualifying of four new NVQ Assessors, and financial support for the achievement of L2 or L3 NVQ in Decorative Finishing & Industrial Painting (or Painting & Decorating as you will know it), has been successfully completed. 70% of the cost of the project has been funded by the CITB. One of the PDA’s large contractor members is working towards becoming an independent National NVQ Assessment Centre for the Painting & Decorating Sector, supported by the PDA’s Education & Training Committee. It is anticipated that the four assessors, on a part-time basis, will use their newly developed assessment skills for this centre, to increase the provision for our Sector.

The key message here? If you don’t have an effective and environmentally friendly paint disposal strategy in place, now is the time to start. If you operate within a small team, or are a self-employed decorator, we suggest implementing the following: •Do not dispose of liquids to either drain or into skips for landfill •Use permitted facilities for any redundant or part used products •Check if your supplier operates a return scheme for any unused paints •Follow the advice given on the Product Safety Data Sheet regarding the correct disposal

Using video to promote your work

V

ideo is an ideal way for you and your business to get known, liked and trusted. And it’s never been easier to make videos - you can film, edit and post them on your phone. Not only that, but embedding your own YouTube videos on your website improves your ranking on Google. It is more effective at pulling people into your content than either text or photos. And videos catch people’s attention when they’re scrolling on social media...

Who is your video for? I used to be a professional decorator, then a photographer, but video is now 90% of what I do. The first question I ask my clients is ‘who is your audience?’ You need to know who you’re trying to attract and inform. Is it homeowners, commercial property owners or leaseholders? Using social media is ideal for grabbing their attention. If you target home owners then Facebook, Instagram and Twitter is where they’re at. If you do commercial decorating, then LinkedIn is the place to be, as well as Twitter. And once you get their interest, make sure that you have got some videos on your website.

What videos should you make?

6. Square videos can have a particular impact but you need to know how to edit them. They’re effective but can be a bit of a faff. 7. Timelapse videos can show whole processes compressed into just a few seconds, and really catch people’s attention. They are easy to do on your phone - use a tripod for best results. They record for a long time so make sure your phone has got enough charge, or plug it into a charger. They’re fun to do too!

Videos on your website As I’ve just said, having YouTube videos on your website is favoured by the Google algorithm. But just as importantly, video on your website can help potential customers trust you more. Here’s why:

1. Testimonials from clients - ideally 30-60 seconds long.

1. The more ‘rich’ your content is online, the more genuine, professional and expert you will appear. A multi-page website with a gallery of photos, an ‘about’ page, testimonials, blogs and videos... can instil more trust in your business than a one-page website.

2. ‘How To’ videos to show off your expertise. These should be the bedrock of your video content. They’re the best way to prove you know what you’re doing.

2. A video featuring you enables your potential client to ‘meet’ you before picking up the phone or emailing you. It creates that human-to-human contact.

3. Slideshows are a great way to create video content out of photos you’ve already got. Use a few text overlays, and some free music from YouTube or a free music library.

3. Video is an opportunity for you to show your skills, not just ‘before and after’ photos, but show you in action. And get detailed, a video I posted of how I sanded a kitchen door got over 2,000 views even though it was 6 minutes long. It proved my attention to detail.

Here’s a range of videos you can use to help promote your business:

4. Live videos on social media can be useful if you already have an audience. Social media platforms like to promote live video and will often notify people if you go live. They’re mostly useful if you’ve got something really interesting to say and want to connect with your existing audience. 5. Vertical videos are good for Instagram and Facebook Stories, and work quite well on Twitter on mobile too. Keep them very brief and interesting as people usually just watch short clips.

4. Testimonials - video ones are more effective than written ones.

Videos on social media To get noticed on social media you need to stand out, and posts with images, still or moving, will always stand out more. Video can do better than photos for two reasons: 1. It gives you more of a chance to tell a story, to involve a viewer with what you want to say. 2. All social media platforms encourage video and will place it high in the feed (with the possible exception of Instagram) because it makes people spend longer on the platform. My tips for videos on social media are to be clear on what the purpose of your video is (see above) and secondly to keep it as short as you can. People will only watch long videos if it’s worth the investment in their time - either the video is particularly entertaining, or it contains information that they really want.

A video testimonial from a client, recorded on your phone, is incredibly valuable.

MARKETING Using text over your video is a good way of getting a message across.

A clean lens (left) and a dusty lens (right). Yes, I know, in this case the dustier the better!

What kit do you need? All you really need is your mobile phone and a cheap tripod. If you’re going to record yourself talking to camera, make sure the tripod is tall enough. You can use an actioncam like a GoPro for timelapse or as a head-cam - if you’re into that. If you’re going to get into vlogging to build an audience, then it can be worth investing in a better camera and audio equipment, maybe even a ring light. But if you’re not, your phone is fine. A very big company going for corporate clients, should invest in getting a professional video producer to create some great content - it can create a real wow, but it doesn’t come cheap.

4. Have a ‘call to action’ - such as ‘If you need your kitchen painting, contact us on...’. 5. Although I’ve advised to keep videos short, people who are trying to find a decorator with real attention to detail will want to see that in your videos. Some of the decorating videos on my website are more than five minutes long, and my more discerning clients watched every second.

The Idaho Painter phenomenon

Editing There are plenty of phone apps and computer programmes you can use to edit your video for free. iMovie for Mac and iPhone has plenty of tools, and for Android I’ve been told that FilmoraGo and Movie Maker Filmmaker are good, and they have free versions. Windows PCs have Windows Movie Maker for basic editing. If you want more advanced tools, then Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro are the tools of choice for most professionals. Appropriate music can enhance your videos, giving them more feeling. YouTube has its own bank of free music, or you can find free music online. I pay to subscribe to a music library for my corporate videos, but unless you’re doing it professionally, this is an unnecessary expense. Use text to tell the audience what’s going on - especially with a slide show or if you’ve no speech in your video, and try not to use flashy effects unless you know what you’re doing – they can distract and look amateur.

The ideal video structure 1. Tell your audience what you’re going to do – whether that’s talking to camera or a simple text introduction: ‘How we sprayed a 25 door kitchen’ for example. 2. Get the message across as concisely and interestingly as possible. Explain what you’re doing and why. ‘We degreased and sanded every door to get maximum paint adhesion and the best finish possible.’ 3. Do some action shots of prepping and painting, and timelapse footage to add interest. Then show the finished result.

The huge success of Chris Berry, The Idaho Painter on YouTube. Some decorators have built amazing brands on YouTube, particularly Chris Berry, The Idaho Painter, whose channel is now called Paintlife TV. He started creating snappy videos eight years ago to share his expertise on how to paint efficiently, and built a following of a quarter of a million subscribers. Some of his videos have over a million views. His trick was to create hundreds of ‘how to‘ videos that have been hugely popular with professional decorators and DIYers alike. There’s no reason why you can’t grow a massive YouTube following, but it’ll take a great deal of time, effort and perseverance. Is it really what you want to do? You’ll only make it pay if you’re able to monetise your videos with ads, promos and merchandising.

So get recording! Get started, make mistakes, and learn how to make better videos. That’s all I did. Your

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Why we need to talk about mental health in construction A survey from mental health charity Mind found that almost half (48%) of all people say they have experienced a mental health problem in their current job. More than 44,000 employees took the survey which also revealed that only half of those who had experienced poor mental health had talked to their employer about it, suggesting that as many as one in four UK workers is struggling in silence.

Why is mental health a problem in construction? The construction industry lifestyle is undoubtedly both challenging and stressful. Long and demanding working hours, working away from home on site for weeks at a time and the lingering unease in the industry, are just some of the factors contributing to poor mental health. In a workforce that is predominantly male, specific risks associated with male mental health also need to be considered. The ‘tough guy’ image widespread in the construction industry is very much to blame. Asking for help and opening up about emotions are just not things that come naturally to many of those working in the industry. The combination of these factors results in many suffering in silence. Physical health and safety are already taken extremely seriously in the construction industry. However, statistics suggest that the most dangerous thing on a building site is the human mind. At a time where suicide kills more people in the construction industry than falls from height, it is only right that mental health and safety is given the same level of thought, time and investment as other site hazards to ensure that the workers in the industry are truly protected.

What can employees do? The easiest thing that we can all do is talk. If you are concerned about a colleague, ask them if they’re ok. See if they want to go for a walk or a cup of tea at lunchtime. Generally, create a safe environment so they can open up to you if they need to. Even if you don’t suspect a colleague is struggling, be careful of the language you use anyway. Insensitive words or phrases can increase the stigma surrounding mental health and make it even harder for the people around you to feel like they can talk about any issues they’re facing. Do not underestimate the impact you can make just by talking to someone. You could change someone’s life. Steve Beckwith, BSG’s Health & Safety Training Manager says, “It’s becoming more widely accepted that construction workers are prone to stress, anxiety and depression. So it is vital that employers are able to identify the warning signs of poor mental health within their workforce and be able to offer guidance before a worker’s health deteriorates.” Steve added, “Unfortunately it’s too common for construction employees not to ask for help even when they desperately need support. So it is down to companies to raise awareness about the devastating consequences surrounding untreated mental ill health so they can control and diminish its causes before the problem becomes unmanageable.”

Signs to spot Samaritans have composed a list of signs to look out for if you’re not feeling okay or if you’re worried about someone else. Signs may include: • Lacking energy or feeling tired • Feeling exhausted all the time • Experiencing ‘brain fog’, find it hard to think clearly. • Finding it hard to concentrate • Feeling restless and agitated • Feeling tearful, wanting to cry all the time • Not wanting to talk to or be with people • Not wanting to do things you usually enjoy • Using alcohol or drugs to cope with feelings • Finding it hard to cope with everyday things and tasks • Experiencing ‘burn out’ Struggling to cope with everyday life doesn’t look or feel the same for everyone. It can’t be generalised about how it’ll make you feel or act. Reach out if you need help.

ULTIMATE WALLPAPERING CHALLENGE LAUNCHED DULUX ACADEMY DESIGN AND DECORATE 2019

METALLICS TREND INTO AUTUMN

34

In celebration of International Wallpaper Week (7-13 October), Dulux Academy is calling on decorators with design flair and a keen eye for detail to create their very own wallpaper before putting their application skills to the test. Running for the third consecutive year, the Dulux Academy Design and Decorate Challenge gives lucky entrants a chance of seeing their design become a reality with the winner receiving bespoke rolls of their paper created by Graham & Brown, as well as enjoying a personal guided factory and design studio tour at the firm’s headquarters in Lancashire. To take part entrants need to get creative and then post their design, on a one metre length standard 1200 grade lining paper, to Dulux Academy compete with a short description explaining the inspiration and functionality behind their idea. Shortlisted finalists will then see their designs shared for public vote on www.duluxacademy.online which will account for 50 per cent of the design mark. They will then be invited to attend the second part of the challenge where their wallpapering skills will be put to the test at the flagship Dulux Academy in Slough on 11 October, during International Wallpaper Week. Their designs and skills will be scrutinised by an expert judging panel made up of representatives from Dulux Academy and Graham & Brown, including Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director at Dulux who will be looking for stand-out designs with wow factor that are balanced and would repeat well when hung. A winner will be crowned Dulux Academy Design and Decorate Winner 2019 based on both their personal flair for design as well as their practical application skills and will be awarded the money-can’t-buy prize of seeing

their paper made by Graham & Brown, as well as a luxury stay at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel and Spa and a Dulux Academy goody bag. Last year’s challenge was won by PDA Member Stuart Yates from Chesterfield who wowed judges with his keen eye for detail exhibiting skills across the board. Stuart was presented with his unique rolls by Graham & Brown CEO Andrew Graham during his factory tour and was then commissioned to use his in-demand, award-winning paper to decorate the home of Catherine Saint, editor of The Decorator magazine. Mark Rigby, Dulux Academy Skills Development Consultant, said, “The Dulux Academy exists to raise standards in the industry and we are keen to support and build up decorators who continue to set the bar when it comes to the craftsmanship of the profession. Decorating is an expert job that requires professionals with dedication to deliver, which is something we are passionate about celebrating. “We created this competition to recognise the expertise and creativity decorators have when it comes to wallpapering, combining a flare for design and the skill of wallpaper hanging, and I’m looking forward to seeing this year’s entries.” Launched in March 2016, Dulux Academy is the UK’s first dedicated academy for professionals in the domestic and commercial decoration industry. It offers a range of courses designed to help decorators upskill and build their business including wallpapering courses such as Introduction to Wallpaper and Advanced Wallpapering. For full details on how to enter the competition or more information on courses visit www.duluxacademy.online

THE METALLIC WALLPAPER range launched by Farrow & Ball in April has been a desing hit and set to continue the trend into autumn and winter. The collection of 25 wallpapers will include nine of the brand’s best loved and most striking designs: Lotus, Tessella, Gable, Enigma, Tourbillon, Bamboo, Ringwold, Amime and Yukutori. In colourways punctuated withshimmering silvers, burnished coppers and lustrous golds, the designs are ideal for creating an impactful and luxurious scheme. 17 of the colourways will be printed with one of the nine new colours as their ground colour. Like all Farrow & Ball wallpapers, the designs are handcrafted by the brand’s expert craftsmen, who use traditional printing methods, layering richly pigmented paints to create uniquely textured paper protected with a wipeable glaze. For popular patterns Gable and Lotus, professional decorators are using the specially created engraved rollers for the application of metallic paint, ensuring a precise and delicate finish that can’t be achieved with large-scale patterns using the usual flatbed printing process. Each design can be paired with a complementary Farrow & Ball paint colour to create an effortless and cohesive scheme in any room of your home. The papers are 100% recyclable, made with responsibly sourced paper and eco-friendly water based paint.

TRIMITE AIM V&A RANGE AT TRADE PROFESSIONALS Two years ago, PDA Associate paint manufacturer, Trimite Global Coatings collaborated with the iconic Victoria and Albert Museum in London to create a range of high-quality paint for the premium end of the paint sector. With knowledge of the industrial paint they produce, the Chairman of the Group recognised a gap in the high-end market. Trimite wanted to team up with a strong brand name to produce a range of paints and the collaboration with the V&A came about. Account Manager at Trimite Global Coatings Richard Palmer said, "The V&A paint range was inspired by the architectural details and original decorative schemes in the Victoria and Albert Museum's archives and on view around the South Kensington buildings. We use the very finest pigments to achieve the highest quality product available in the market today, the range of 40 colours are ideal for a classic or contemporary setting.” Although on the market for a couple of years the paint is a best-kept secret in the sector, Richard is keen for them to be seen and tested by a wider audience of professional decorators. The reviews so far from the trade are extremely positive. Decorators have liked the fact that the paint has an excellent flow rate and does not need the addition of adhesion primers to achieve the right viscosity. The opacity of the paint and coverage was rated. Trimite’s paint heritage is in the industrial area, and they bring all the expertise gained from that sector through into the collaboration with the V&A to produce the range of paint. The paint in most cases is one coat which saves the contractor time. It wears exceptionally well, and it can be scrubbed and washed more than any other paint. The depth of colour and retention of colour is outstanding. Key market areas are interior designers, both retail and trade, paint contractors, painters and decorators and estate management.

CROWN KITS OUT KIDS CLUBS CROWN PAINTS IS sponsoring four grassroots football teams, providing them with brand new kits, following a social media competition. All four lucky football teams were selected at random from the hundreds of correct entries to Crown’s Colourful Kits competition, which took place on the Crown Trade and Crown Decorating Centres social media channels. Each week for four weeks, Crown posted a colourful graphic of an international football team kit – France, Belgium, Nigeria and Colombia – which were all rendered using Crown Paints’ colours. Those entering the competition simply had to correctly guess the name of the team and comment the answer, along with the name of a local grassroots football team which they felt deserved sponsorship. The winning teams were AFC Sharrow (Sheffield), Linfield Ladies Youth Academy (Belfast), St Andrews Boys

Club (Greenock) and Morden Little League (Sutton), who have now received a year’s sponsorship from Crown Paints, with stylish new kits. Crown Paints brand manager Lindsay Hall said, “We have a long history of supporting community projects, so we’re really pleased to have been able to sponsor four very deserving grassroots football teams as part of our Crown’s Colourful Kits competition. “We wish AFC Sharrow, Linfield Ladies Youth Academy, St Andrews Boys Club, and Morden Little League the best of luck this season, and we’re looking forward to seeing how the teams will do over the next year.” Don’t forget to follow Crown Trade and Crown Decorating Centres on Facebook and Twitter for updates on the winning teams throughout the season.

BREWERS HELP TO ADD POSITIVITY TO INNER CITY COMMUNITY WALL THE BRANDON ESTATE in Stockwell was the model of community when it was opened in 1958. Sadly, recent decades have seen it getting a bad press for crime, gangs and deprivation. But the strength of local community is starting to change all that through projects like the new community wall mural. Brewers Decorator Centre in Peckham was approached by local group Bee Urban to help out with an ambitious community scheme, in association with The Brandon Tenants Residents Association. The aim was to paint a massive mural along a 60m wall, making it one of the longest murals in London. Brewers store manager Jimmy Thomson was delighted to help by donating over 150 litres of Albany Paint to the community project. The Peckham store were blown away by the enthusiasm of Bee Urban’s Barnaby Shaw as his team strove to overcome the negative image created about the estate, seeking instead to highlight a very different message. The large exterior wall of Hanworth House backs on to Kennington Park extension and is located at the end of Bolton Crescent, off Camberwell New Road (5 minutes walk from Oval station). It’s one of the main entry points to the Brandon Estate. The wall had spent years looming over the local park, overshadowing the local community with graffiti tags. Not a great welcome to visitors.

The community was in need of undertaking a new challenge to battle the negative image created by the wall, so Bee Urban commissioned two local artists, Jack Fawdry Tatham and Tom Scotcher, to collaborate with the local community and design 16 hexagons to visualise the thoughts, hopes, culture and history various community groups. The hexagon spaces, reflecting the formation of a beehive, are a fitting homage to the community and to Bee Urban. “We wanted to convert the graffiti covered wall to something with a very ‘uplifting and positive’ image that brings change to the neighbourhood,” commented Jack. “Brewers helped with this huge community mural by donating a large quantity of paint. We wanted to use

exterior wall paint instead of spray paint as we could work with lots of people who may not have much experience in painting.” With funding from Southwark Council’s Clean Greener Safer Fund, it was possible to have a series of inspirational community workshops at John Ruskin and St John the Divine primary schools, Highshore Secondary School, Pembroke House, Bethwin Adventure Playground and Women Make Art, as well as a drop-in session at community centers, to develop exuberant and unique imagery for the mural design. The project has embraced all aspects of the community, across all ages. Pop in to your local store for more information or visit www.brewers.co.uk

SADOLIN SETS THE TONE FOR THIS MORNING SCHOOL SCIENCE GARDEN SADOLIN WAS THE star of the small screen this month thanks to a school renovation project organised by ITV's This Morning. Gardener Danny Clarke was tasked with creating a new science garden for St Georges CE Primary School in Bromley, Kent, in time for the new term, and the programme turned to Sadolin to help create a colourful outdoor space. Orpington Crown Decorating Centre donated 12 litres of woodstain in purple, light blue, pink, orange, yellow and white to help transform the school's drab outdoor space into a colourful educational environment that will allow the Bromley school's pupils to learn whilst spending more time outdoors.

Danny Clarke and a team of volunteers organised by This Morning used Sadolin to paint the garden's multi-coloured picket fence, the timber used for the garden's raised beds, and even recycled tyres that the team used to create planters. Sadolin Superdec is durable and highly-pigmented, and thanks to the Crown Decorating Centre's tinting service, the garden designers were able to select from over 300 colour options to choose something that would make a mark at the school for years to come. Commenting on the donation, Josie Cawdry, corporate communications executive for Crown Paints, said, "We were delighted to be involved in this wonderful project - when This Morning 's producers approached us about the donation, we jumped at the chance to help out the school. "At Crown Paints, we're advocates of the power of colour to transform places, and this project was a great example of how using bright colours can create a stimulating educational space that the children can feel very proud of." www.crowntrade.co.uk

n 2010, seven volunteers in Nenthead, Cumbria, began working together to rescue and re-develop the near-derelict Grade II listed Methodist chapel, built in 1873 at the centre of the village. After a lot of time and effort, plans were drawn up and in 2013, £1.69m funding was granted from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Historic chapel saved with community effort The project was started to restore the chapel, and rebuild it as a space for the community. Working for the main contractor Walker Conservation Specialists Ltd, PDA Member firm Qualis Decorating Group Ltd, was signed up for the restoration and repainting. With the derelict state of the chapel, the restoration was not for the faint-hearted! Jonathan Mellars, Director at Qualis outlines how the restoration took place, “We started on site the first week of January 2019 with work on the ornately restored ceiling and cornice. A birdcage scaffold was in place for access but it was due to be dismantled in early February, so we had a time-limited opportunity. “Full preparation of washing the 160m2 ceiling and cornice, filling any

They had been refitted after being sent off-site for timber refurbishment. We hired in a Genie Z60 cherry picker to gain access to the first floor windows, which we also used to access the newly lime rendered gable end where we applied Keim Dilution Primer and then we airless sprayed this with Keim Royalan.”

“One of the hardest aspects to overcome was the drying times of the materials, given the location and time of year. The lime plaster and the ornate cornice and mouldings were drawing moisture out the existing property walls, which had sat for 20 years open to the elements with no heating. “At the time, there was bad weather, low temperatures and even snow!

We had constant monitoring of the walls and ceilings, as we had to make sure the moisture content stayed under 18% for the Keim Optil chemical process to work. Conservatory conservation THE EARLY SUMMER gave PDA Member Chris Kerfoot the weather to undertake an outdoor repair and renovation project on a dilapidated conservatory. When initially assessing the scope of the work, Chris saw he had a full renovation on his hands! The Speedheater Cobra (below) made easy work of stripping the defective paint, whilst the super smooth finish was achieved with a Graco HVLP sprayer.

The client wanted to bring the conservatory back to it’s original condition, as it had fallen into a state of disrepair. Chris told The Decorator, “As the previous decorator had used the wrong primer on the hardwood, this had to be taken off. The first step was to remove the defective paint with a Speedheater Cobra, an infrared paint removal tool, then repairs to the wooden sills were undertaken using the Timbabuild system. “After everything had been fixed and ‘made good’, I used Tikkurila Otex on the bare areas, to prime and undercoat. I then masked up all the glass and sprayed two coats of Tikkurila Otex Akva using my Graco HVLP TurboForce II 9.5 ProContractor. I then lightly sanded the surfaces and sprayed three coats of Tikkurila Everal 40. “Once demasked, I checked the windows over to make sure everything was finished to perfection. The client was very happy and I’m sure the correct repair and repaint of the conservatory will mean that it lasts for a long time.”

From a distance, the conservatory didn’t look too bad, but closer inspection revealed the poor state of the timber and paint finish.

Manor House Makeover

P

DA Member Phil Hayward of PH Décor Ltd started the year with the start of a restoration and renovation project on a Grade II listed Manor House. The Manor House required a full renovation, attention to the rotten wood both in the interior and exterior of the house was one of the critical parts in the project...

Due to the scale of work, this is an ongoing project and restoration will take place over time. As an experienced decorator, skilled in the use of the Repair Care system, Phil was more than able to take on the job. As he told The Decorator, “Our work started on Oaken Manor with interior decorating the property. The Manor is a Grade II listed building, with most of its original features, with this in mind we selected colours from the Dulux Heritage range to update the interior but with a sympathetic colour scheme. “The starting position on the project was in the stairwell, where all the wood panels were cracked and in poor condition. First of all, the previous filler was removed and replaced with Repair Care Putty, which allows movement, and then finished with two coats of Dulux Satin. “Downstairs the ceilings have a very decorative, lattice effect finish, which was hand painted. The area took a lot of preparation as it had not been touched in a long time. We replaced the magnolia with historic, vibrant colours which matched into the original stained glass window in the property. “Other areas of wooden sills around the windows have been repaired and restored using the Repair Care System, then finished with the appropriate paints from the Dulux Heritage Range. “This project is an ongoing job with many more areas to tackle. Even after thirty years in the trade, I do get a sense of accomplishment after each job is completed and a high finish is achieved. The current stage of the work was completed on time

Whether you spray or paint by brush or roller, one thing is inevitable, your paint will need straining. I do get so cross when I find skin and lumps in the new can! PaintNetz is the creation of painter and decorator Vicky Brown. When she was working as a painter and decorator, she found it difficult pouring large containers of paint into a sieve that was balanced on the edge of the scuttle and came up with an ingenious solution. The paint strainers are made from a fine net that is elasticated and easily stretches over a paint kettle, scuttle or hopper. You slip them over the top, pour the paint through the net, and you get lovely smooth paint in your container! It’s a good idea to have a pack in your van and pop them on your paint scuttle as required. They can also be rinsed out by hand, or cool washed in the washing machine and then reused. Colour coded for easy use (medium-fine are black and extra-fine are white), the range consists of 1 and 2.5 litre paint kettle size in mediumfine and extra-fine (5 pack), 10 litre bucket and tube size in medium-fine and extra-fine (2 pack), and 10, 15 and 25 litre scuttle in medium-fine (5 pack). Perfect solution for a flawless finish www.johnstonestrade.com/perfect Johnstone’s Trade has launched Perfect Matt, an innovative new paint that has been designed to eliminate visible application marks highlighted by critical lighting and the extra time taken to resolve them. On large, broad wall surfaces, paint finishes are often subject to criticism due to the visible application marks that can be seen in areas of critical lighting, for example where there are large windows or spotlights. To address this, Johnstone’s Trade has developed Perfect Matt with Smooth Layer technology, which means the paint has a balanced ratio of binding agent, additives and pigments to deliver a flawless, flat matt finish with ease – even on the most challenging of projects. The unique technology eliminates the impact of visible application marks such as streaks and overlapping, as well as the costs associated with the extra time spent returning to site to repaint surfaces. Perfect Matt can also be used to re-touch and spot repair effortlessly, ensuring any spoiled areas dry to blend in flawlessly with the surrounding surface. It also achieves the same flat matt finish when applied to highabsorbency surfaces or over filler marks, with no need for a primer. Johnstone’s Trade Perfect Matt is available in the full range of Voice of Colour shades, and can be purchased in 2.5litre, 5litre and 10litre sizes. The new paint also has a class 1 scrub rating.

The ultimate range of fillers & smoothers www.axusdecor.com Since its debut at last year's National Painting & Decorating Show, Axus DÊcor’s versatile range of fillers and smoothers has grown in popularity with positive reviews flowing in daily. The range itself features eight products, three of which are pre-mixed including Flex-E-Fill, used to fill damage of any depth (wall and wood) and also delivers a fine finish in the same, single application. It's the ideal product for quick jobs due to its very fast drying time and ability to increase elasticity accordingly (by working the filler between two filling knives). Its flexibility prevents the reoccurrence of hairline cracks and its creamy consistency makes it extremely easy to apply, grabbing and holding on to surfaces well. Also in the range is the ultimate hardness filler, Marmaron, a tough solution for exterior surfaces that is formulated with a very high resin content making it set hard, preventing cracks from reappearing and adhere to almost any substrate, including oil-based paint! It can also be used for shaping broken window sills and corners, making it a versatile, permanent repair solution. Six other products complete the range, which will be showcased at this year's National Painting & Decorating Show. Make sure you pop in to see live demonstrations and for your chance to try them out for yourself.

Vaalue for Money? When times are tight, thoughts naturally go to ways of saving money. With budgets being stretched, cheaper options often appear attractive. But these cheaper options often suffer value engineering or ‘shrink inf lation’. Less paint lift, less coverage, poor cutting in n, sweet spots lost no sooner than they arrive – All comments heard far too often. When up to 85% of a quote is purely the lab bour, time is a vital consideration and can have a serious impact on costings and bottom lines. So ask yourself – Does the sweetness of low prices really outlast the bitterness of poor quality?
