From the Executive Director Dear Friends:
What a privilege it has been to work with the magnificent children enrolled in our program this year. Time and time again we see how the arts are so often a catalyst for extraordinary change in a child’s life. There is simply something about the arts that can reach children in ways nothing else can. At the Cathedral Arts Project, we take to heart Robert Browning’s observation that “our aspirations are our possibilities.” Each one of these students came to us teeming with dreams and gifts and promise. It has been a joy to watch them begin to realize their potential over the course of the year. This year’s theme was “Reach for the Stars.” Children in our program learn so much about the particular art form they are studying—its history, vocabulary and technical skills— but they also learn about themselves. They learn that if they work hard, they can accomplish goals they never thought were possible. They learn they have the power to solve problems, to overcome setbacks and obstacles and to achieve success. I hope these children inspire you today. I urge you to ponder their aspirations and their possibilities. There is no telling what lies ahead for each of them as they continue to try new things, to think creatively and to always reach for the stars.
Sincerely, Kimberly L. Hyatt, Executive Director Cathedral Arts Project

Book: The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds Often the pressure to perform or to be perfect can stand in our way of greatness. This book is about starting small and exploring where visual arts can take us when we free ourselves to experiment and the confidence and success that comes with “going for it.” Artists: Matthew Bodkin, Keyona Bradley, Ronald Dandridge, Devion Davis, Jaimee Diaz, Quiana Elliot, Mikyah Graham, Aneudy Gutierrez, Kaitlyn Helt, Isabelle Keirn, Angel Mann, Corey Phanor, Tyler Plummer, Mia Seabrooks, JonCarl Smedberg, Marlana Simons CEDAR HILLS ELEMENTARY | Principal: Marie Antoine Instructor: Christianna White
Assistant: Marlene Wildes
Book: The Boy Who Drew Cats by Margaret Hodges We read a Japanese fairytale about a boy who liked to draw cats. He drew cats EVERYWHERE, even where he was not supposed to! He gets in trouble, but his drawings end up saving him in the end. We learned to draw cats from all angles, step-by-step, and then we had fun painting them in realistic or imaginary colors like the artist Franz Marc. It is fun to REACH for the Stars and try to do our best work in the style of each artist that we are studying, even if it is just a small Japanese boy who loves to draw cats. Artists: Giovanni Boles, Serena Butler, Avery Daniels, T’yana Dickerson, A.J. Gray, Lauriah Hoilman, Benjamin Hornsby, Ethan Hornsby, Noah Hornsby, Christopher Kazmierczak, Dylan Painter, Ja’Shya Phillips, Celeste Salas, Cabira Smith, Matthew Tibbitt, Victoria Tyler, Dae’Lisia Walker, LaDarius Walker, Shanya Blanco-White, Alexis Youman

Book: Discovering Great Artists by MaryAnn F. Kohl and Kim Solga Children’s art is always unique and expressive and perfectly their own. No two projects will look the same. Through self-expression students learn critical thinking and problem solving skills that may be used in everyday life. While reading about famous artists such as van Gogh, Matisse, Gaugin, Klee and Pollock, students learned to recognize the style of these artists and were encouraged to adopt one of their own. When viewing a child’s art you can see the heartfelt expressions of thoughts, images and emotions. It is this self-expression that is encouraged at Cathedral Arts Project and allows children to explore and expand their creative possibilities. Artists: Laniya Alvin, Azuri Barbre, Mikyahia Bernard, Jasper Clements, Lauren Dawkins, Jahkya Dickerson, Jaden Doig, Camry Royce Drummond, Kaniya Fisher, Avyan Fyffe, Antonio Griffin, Myra Handy, Darien Kierce, Arianna King, Isabella Linder, Jacquelin McLaughlin, Nathara Moise, Lashandra Pierre, Aaliseya Roberts, Laila Robinson, Skylar Robinson, Will Roberts, Keena Small, Nia Turner, Lauren Washington, Janay Wright-Williams MARTIN LUTHER KING ELEMENTARY | Principal: Kimberly Brown Instructor: Moises Ramos

Book: Oh, the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss Life is full of obstacles both big and small. The students in Cathedral Arts will reach for the stars and never fall. They will rise above any challenges they face and will work really hard to stay in the race. They will run into bang ups and hangs ups along the way, but with hard work and dedication the CAP kids will conquer the day! Our students are faced with challenges every day and the book, Oh, the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss, encourages them to continue following their dreams by being persistent and never giving up. They will reach for the stars no matter what obstacles are in the way. This book was a perfect fit for our class and imparts what being a CAP kids is all about. Book: Henri’s Scissors by Jeanette WInter Henri Matisse is a famous artist who overcame anxiety by painting. Part of reaching for the stars has to do with following our dreams. Although he was a lawyer he quit his job and worked hard to follow his true dream of becoming an artist. We had fun creating a unique collage using scissors and making our own masterpiece, just like Henri Matisse. We studied many different famous artists and had fun learning to work in their styles and subject matter. Artists: Annie, Ashley, Caitelyn, Cierra, Darlene, Keamber, Larissa, Rebecca, Shataura, Shemoria, Tamaria, Tatyana, Trionna PINE ESTATES ELEMENTARY | Principal: Michelle Quarles Instructor: Vanessa Scott

Book: Discovering Great Artists by MaryAnn F. Kohl and Kim Solga Art is a perfect outlet for learning about people, places and things. The most important aspects of the projects we do is discovery, exploration and individual creativity. We use the world as our inspiration so the possibilities are endless. Children are taught there is no wrong way to do art, so it is up to each child to decide how his or her work will turn out. It is this freedom to draw from personal knowledge, life experiences and imagination that allows children to create something unique and beautiful. It is wonderful to see a child’s face light up when they’re done and hear them say, “WOW! I did that.” Artists: Jamari Allen, Taliyah Brown, Zaryanna Casas, Amir Chapman, Jeremiah Cummings, Amari Gunder, Kamya Hall, Tatianna Johnson, Jayla Kohn, J’Lynn Le’Counte, R’Niyah Mormon, Tahja Parrish, Imani Paulk, William Ritchey, Trey Saunders, Jaylen Simmons, Jaylen Singleton, Savion Stephens, Christy Taha, Matthew Turner, Jamari Whitehead SAN JOSE ELEMENTARY | Principal: Kristie Kemp Instructor: Mary Haeberle

My hope is my students learn to be brave and show the courage I have seen in them all year long as they perform for you today and shine like the stars they are. Cathedral Arts Project Student Creed To reinforce personal goals while in class and in their everyday lives, our Cathedral Arts Project students recite the following creed: I am proud to be a Cathedral Arts Project student and promise to:
•
Respect others and their ideas as I respect myself.
•
Listen to others with an open mind and follow the directions of my teacher.
•
Cooperate with my classmates and contribute to the success of our class.
•
Work hard to overcome obstacles.
•
Practice each day and take responsibility for my work as an artist.
A Cathedral in my Heart Written for Cathedral Arts Project by Frances Key, 2005 I learned to sing and the song set me free, I learned to dance, and the dance gave me wings! I learned to paint on the canvas of life, And now I can see I have made a new start!
There's a cathedral in my heart, An open space of love and light! Yes, a cathedral rising high, A ray of hope within my life!
There's a cathedral in my heart, An open space of love and light! Yes, a cathedral rising high, A ray of hope within my life!
Thank you for the gift, Thank you for the lift! Thank you, one and all, Someday I'll pass it on, Someday I will pass it on... And on and on and on and on! Thank you!
I learned to play instruments on my own, I learned to read some musical notes, I learned to act on the stage with a smile, And all of these things made me feel like a star!

About Cathedral Arts Project The Cathedral Arts Project is the largest after-school provider of comprehensive and ongoing instruction in the visual and performing arts for elementary and middle school students in Duval County, Florida. How We Operate The Cathedral Arts Project employs instructors to provide twice-weekly instruction in dance, music, theatre and visual arts during the after-school hours at elementary schools and community based organizations. Visual arts students receive two hours of instruction twice each week. Performing arts students receive one hour of instruction twice a week. Priority for our programs is given to students at schools where at least 62% of the student body qualifies for free or reduced lunch. How We Measure Our Performance Teachers utilize pre-program and post-program participant skills assessments to evaluate the students’ progress with regard to:
•
Improved artistic skills and mastery of Sunshine State Standards.
•
Improved class participation and project completion.
• •
Improved teamwork, including communications with peers and adults. Measurement of attitudes and effective growth.
Parents, guardians, school and site representatives, and teachers complete a year-end evaluation. Each teacher is required to complete a weekly journal to judge progress, pinpoint difficult situations and define needs for additional training. The Cathedral Arts Project has partnered with the Office of Research and Accountability for Duval County Public Schools to collect student data for those students who participate in our programs. Initial results indicate that our students are outperforming their peers at the district and state level on standardized tests. Our Teachers and Assistants The Cathedral Arts Project employs exceptional teachers and assistants who are chosen both for their ability to communicate with children and their artistic mastery. The Cathedral Arts Project teachers serve as positive role models who mentor the students, guide them in building character and self-esteem, enhance the students’ prospects for academic success and teach the elements of the visual or performing arts. Policy on Diversity We believe all children deserve instruction in the visual and performing arts. In principle and in practice, the Cathedral Arts Project aims to provide equal access to arts instruction, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, race, gender, disability, religion, sexual orientation or geographic location within our service area of Duval County, Florida. Our Beginnings The Cathedral Arts Project was launched in 1993 by a small group of people dedicated to children and the arts. They never planned to form a nonprofit. They simply wanted to give children in the immediate neighborhood the same chance they had to benefit from the arts. The demand for arts education was so great however, that the organization quickly spread throughout the county. What began as one dance class for 10 students now serves more than 2,100 children with visual and performing arts classes in 2013-2014.

Guardians of the Arts Susan and Hugh Greene
As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Spring for the Arts and enter our third decade of service to the community, the Cathedral Arts Project is privileged to recognize Susan and Hugh Greene as the 2014 Guardian of the Arts Award recipients. While the reach of their efforts to safeguard and advance the arts extend to many institutions and artists throughout our community, their influence on Cathedral Arts has been particularly formative, fruitful and of lasting significance. Every now and then, an individual’s passion and a nonprofit’s mission converge to form a tie that binds and brings about great good. Such has been the pairing between Susan Greene and Cathedral Arts. Susan has been a guiding force on the Cathedral Arts Board of Directors since 2006.
In speaking of her
commitment to Cathedral Arts, Hugh explains, “The word ‘guardian’ implies a level of sustained protection … When you’re talking about quality and impact, it’s sustained commitment that gets you there. Susan’s engagement is ongoing, thoughtful, impactful in the long-range. She has ‘stick-to-it-ness’ – that’s being a guardian.” A former educator, Susan’s pedagogical training and experience led to her conviction of the role the arts should play in learning. One of Susan’s earliest efforts in arts education was to establish an artist series in public schools. More recently, Susan played a leading role in the strategic planning phase of the Kennedy Center’s Any Given Child program, which Cathedral Arts brought to Jacksonville as a cross-sector collective impact initiative designed to ensure all students equal access to a quality arts education.

Through her service on the boards of WJCT and the Cathedral Arts Project over the years, Susan has proven herself a tireless champion for finding resourceful ways to make sure the potential of the arts to change lives is realized, especially among the underserved. Susan explains her dedication to Cathedral Arts by saying, “Arts education is what every child needs, but it’s not only what they need; it’s what they deserve. It is what brings joy to peoples’ lives and what brings hope to our community.” After a fire in 2007 destroyed much of their church, Hendricks Avenue Baptist, the Greenes were instrumental in efforts not only to rebuild but also to include dedicated gallery space for rotating exhibitions as well as a permanent collection. As President and CEO of Baptist Health, Hugh believes the arts are essential to creating a healing environment for the body, mind and spirit. Art and music are integrated into patient care as well as the overall hospital environments from public spaces to family lounges and patient rooms. Collectively the hospitals display more than 300 pieces of art by local artists – and the Greenes personally donated a beautiful bronze Enzo Torcoletti sculpture displayed in the lobby of Baptist South. Susan and Hugh have an ear attuned to the many needs of our community crying out for attention. We applaud them for also having a spirit to understand the capacity of the arts to address many of those needs at a deep level and for having a determination to take action that will unleash the power of the arts. They do so not as those who occasionally dabble at it from a distance, but rather as ones who invest the fullness of their very lives into this work on a daily basis with whomever they encounter along the way. By deeds as well as words, the Greenes eloquently express the special role of the arts to transform understanding, to transform our community and to transform lives. As Tillich put it, “We want only to show you something we have seen and to tell you something we have heard . . . that here and there in the world and now and then in ourselves is a New Creation.” With deep gratitude for the varied ways they have incarnated this truth and made it a reality for countless others, we congratulate Susan and Hugh Greene, the 2014 Guardians of the Arts!

cap soup can at artwalk What better way to celebrate Cathedral Arts Project Day, ArtWalk, and the unique role of art in bringing together the community than by harnessing the genius of Andy Warhol for a special community art project? Hundreds of ArtWalk participants joined CAP staff in the creation of a special Warhol-CAP soup can to commemorate the mayor’s recognition of October 2nd as CAP Day in Jacksonville.
