Mustangs finish with 7-5 season; qualify for bowl game for third-straight year The SMU football team finished the 2011 regular season 7-5, winning at least seven games for the third straight season. The Mustangs defeated UTEP, Northwestern State, Memphis, TCU, UCF, Tulane and Rice. The highlight of the Mustangs’ season was winning the Iron Skillet. SMU students stormed the field in Fort Worth after a fourth-down pass from TCU fell incomplete in overtime, sealing a 40-33 upset of the TCU Horned Frogs. “What a win,” starting quarterback J.J. McDermott said. “It’s been a long, long time coming. We were up. They stormed back. I’m ecstatic, so proud of our guys.” This was the second win over a ranked team since the death penalty in the 1980s. Not only did the upset end TCU’s 46 consecutive weeks in top 25 rankings; the Mustangs also received votes in both the USA Today Coaches’ and Associated Press polls, and were rated 34th in the coaches’ poll after this win. Defeating TCU started off the Mustangs’ season at 4-1 for the first time since 1986. While the rest of the regular season didn’t continue the way the Mustangs hoped – due in part to the season-ending injury that running back Zach Line received – the Mustangs were still able to finish the regular season bowl-eligible.

Nine Mustangs received All-Conference USA honors as selected by the conference's 12 head football coaches. Six of the nine Mustangs were first-team picks, including Line. He led the league in rushing with 1,224 yards for the second-straight season and scored a league-best 17 touchdowns in 10 games before suffering a season-ending foot injury. Kelvin Beachum, a senior lineman, was also a first-team pick because he assisted Line in gaining those yards. Senior wide receiver Cole Beasley, who had 79 catches for 954 yards, with a league high 7.2 reception per game was another first-team pick, as was junior Darius Johnson, who had 72 receptions for 998 yards and seven touchdowns. On the defensive line was defensive end, Taylor Thompson who had 41 stops, and a team-high seven sacks and defensive back Richard Crawford, who had 42 tackles. Linebackers Ja’Gared Davis and Taylor Reed and lineman Marquis Frazer were named second-team all-conference. Several players received honorable mention, including offensive linemen Bryce Tennison and Kelly Turner, defensive linemen Margus Hunt and Torlan Pittman, and defensive back Chris Banjo. — Colleen Costello
