North Carolina Museum of Art Performance Arts Center Fall 2013 / Instructor: David Hill

The project strives to stay connected to the North Carolina Museum of Art’s promotion of the visual arts as well as the performance arts. The expanded gallery space included in the project allows for the building to be utilized at anytime of day and not just at night when the theatre and cinema spaces would mainly be in use. The site was chosen for its proximity to Blue Ridge Parkway and the main and the main entrance to the North Carolina Museum of Art. The concept of this project is in reference to the layers of the curtain on a performance stage and how there’s a stage that everyone can see but then there is everything between the curtains and back stage that only the crew adn performers experience.

02 Roudnice nad Labem University

Fall 2012 / Instructor: Thomas Bitnar / North Carolina State University Prague Institute, Prague, Czech Republic A sustainable renovation of the Roudnice Castle in Roudnice nad Labem, Czech Republic to turn the site into a potential university campus. The goal of this design was to respect the historical integrety of the site and impact the exsisting facilities as little as possible. The main proposed renovation is located in the castle’s central courtyard that has been currently paved over for a parking lot. These renovations made to the courtyard space would be concidered a part of phase one of the renovation of the entire site. Sustainable features were also proposed to turn the site into a Platinum LEED Certified project.

*Courtyard during World War II (Roudnice Conservation Society)

Roudnice Castle

Originially constructed as a vacation home for the royal family, over time the castle has taken on various occupents including a boy scouts type training facility which was later taken over by the Nazis during World War II. Small changes were made to the castle by the Nazis during their time there and a part of the west wing had to be reconstructed after a bomb hit during the war. The entire campus has about ten buildings including a chapel, stables, and servent houses. The site as a whole would be the ideal location for a university with because of its relation to Prague, the river, a trainstation on the North side, and bus debot to the south. The castle itself would be appropriate for the first phase of a renovation because of it’s size and the existing renovations that were made by during World War II which include large bathrooms, a full gym with a basketball court, and an auditorium. *Current state of courtyard

03 College of Design Extension

Spring 2012 / Instructor: Jianxin Hu / Partner: David Goldsmith The Design School Extension is a portal that creates a transition from main campus to the College of Design. The use of the original planning grid of North Carolina State University’s campus and the current planning grid create the form of the building. A linking bridge starting from the Syme Hall courtyard leads to a plaza for events in front of the building or through the building portal into a large green space shared between the Design School Extension and the SAS building. The use of vertical terracotta louvers on the east and west sides of the building reduces the impact of beam sunlight. Horizontal terracotta louvers on the southern facade for additional sun-shading

05 Charleston Map of the City Study Spring 2011 / Instructor: Sara Queen

This two part project was a three week long study of Charleston, South Carolina. Part one of the study was a series of diagrams that analyzed various historical maps of the city showing how history has changed the landscape and grid of the city over time. Part two of the study was to create a three-dimensional model interpretation of the final diagram. All of the diagrams were hand drawn on trace using ink while the final model was produced using plexi glass, bristol paper, and MDF.

Cheasapeake and Ohio Canal Visitor Center, Georgetown, Washington, D.C. Spring 2014 / Instructor: Dennis Stallings

The Cheasapeake and Ohio Canal Visitor Center will provide a museum and gallery that promote the history of the canal as well as a rental shop that will provide recreational equipement to the vistors wanting to use the Cheaseapeake and Ohio Canal Towpath and the Capital Crescent Trail. An additonal cafe and bar will also be apart of the center bringing more business to the west end of Water Street. The simple design of the visitor center is meant to respect the history and architecture of Georgetown and relate to the traditional boathouses that have occupied the surrounding area over the past hundred and fifty years.
