Welcome to Little Athletics This handbook is a guide to explain and answer questions frequently asked about our Caloundra Little Athletics Club. It also contains information about further opportunities available through Little Athletics Queensland. Little Athletics is a national organisation catering for over 80,000 children in all States and Territories of Australia. Little Athletics Queensland (LAQ) is a member of the Association of Australian Little Athletics. It successfully caters for all children from the inexperienced participant who wants to learn and have fun while practicing their athletic skills, to the more talented athlete that is looking for competitive experience and opportunities to develop their athletics by state level competitions; selection into the Under 13 State Team, National Under 15 Camp and/or the New Zealand Development Tour.

It also provides opportunities for parents. Those who have an interest in athletics can attend various Officiating and Coaching Courses to achieve Officiating and Coaching Certificates. Or they can join the committee and learn management and organisational skills. Older children/siblings or ones with less interest in competing are also supported through our CAPS Program. These children are guided through a series of Steps, which allow them to and develop confidence and leadership and attain Certificates in areas such as First Aid; Officiating; and Coaching.

Family, Fun and Fitness Little Athletics is a Family activity in which children learn the basic skills of running, jumping and throwing. Parents are expected to be involved with their children in this family activity but in doing so they learn new skills and share knowledge and find the overall experience rewarding.

Little Athletics is a Fun activity. All children from Tiny tots to 17 years regardless of ability are encouraged to participate. Personal improvement overshadows competitive results. Our centre provides friendly competitions on Friday nights and training/coaching during the week. By joining in these activities your child will make new friends and learn how to do all the events correctly, while still having lots of fun.

Little Athletics is a Fitness activity. From simple warm-up exercises, which precede each meeting and each training session to the actual running, jumping and throwing events. All little athletics activities are designed to help improve your child’s fitness and well-being.

Annually at the presentation night a new committee of volunteers are elected to run the Caloundra Little Athletics Club. We have no paid employees. It requires an enormous amount of organisation and time but is also very rewarding. The committee requires and appreciates as much parental support as possible. We would like to thank those named above and others in non-committee roles who have volunteered to assist for this season. Without you we would have no club for our children.

Center Managers Report

Hello to all athletes, parents and friends, my name is Peter Haig and this will be first year as the Centre Manager, however I have been involved with CLAC for the past 11 years as a parent, helper and committee member. For our returning athletes and parents, you probably know me best as the starter on the outside track. We hope this 2014/2015 season will be enjoyable and full of fun for our athletes, parents and committee members. To all our new and returning members, a very warm welcome, I look forward to meeting and talking with you all throughout the season. My wife, Jenny and I first became involved with Caloundra Little Athletics when our daughter Jessica, who was 6, had a great time at her primary school athletics day. A passing chat with one of the teachers who was involved with the club led us down to the field where we signed up Jessica and her big sister Cathy whilst Callum, then 2 years of age was in and out of his pram all night. We had a great time and embraced the social interaction with the kids, parents and the committee. Little Athletics policy of Family, Fun and Fitness covers all the aspects of the nights activities. We need to always focus on each athlete’s goal on improvement and many of the most memorable performances I have seen have not come from the winners of the events, but those that put there all in to improve on their previous performances and beat those elusive PB’s. As the athletes get older, other avenues can open up at the U13 age group, firstly, the Sunshine Coast LA Clubs are looking at having a number of Seniors night where athletes can get together at a venue to compete and socialise together which will be a great development. Also, once in the U13 age group our athletes can gain dual membership with QLD Athletics (QA) which is provided free of charge and qualifies them to compete at QA events. Jessica, now an U20 at QA level has now gone on to represent Australia through this program and Callum, now an U14 athlete, hardly ever goes back into his pram! Unfortunately with my work commitments, I will occasionally be away for Friday nights but will be covered by our Assistant Centre Manager, Cam Cashin and our immediate past Centre Manager, Rob Herbert. Our club nights get under way at 5.15pm on Fridays, when I have a quick chat to everyone regarding any club news and any upcoming events. For our Club Nights to run smoothly and successfully we need and encourage families assistance and participation. It is a club requirement for parents/guardians to stay on the grounds so please offer assistance and get involved with us. The kids really love it when we all get involved. Guardians and families can be involved with their child/rens age group in a number of ways. i.e.- coming early to help set up for the evening, age recording your child’s group, assisting with this by measuring, collecting throwing implements, time keeping, place getting and off the field helping out at the canteen and BBQ. Other assistance can be provided out of competition hours helping with the field maintenance with mowing and line marking help always welcomed. *Don’t forget to sign your name in your child/children’s folder so that you record your points for refund of the family levy at the end of the season.

Towards the beginning of the season we will be offering a 1 day ‘D grade’ officials course which is fantastic course to parents and guardians to learn the basic rules about little athletics, techniques, measuring rules etc. Updates about the course will be advised closer to the date. I would like to thank our major sponsors for this seasonCaloundra RSL, Caloundra Bendigo Bank and Princes’ Supa IGA Caloundra. Thanks also to The Athletes Foot Caloundra, Mandrake Business Service and Mark McArdles office, as well as those kind local business who donate achievement awards to our athletes each week. This season CLAC would like to also thank our Club Gold Member Sponsors; – Reitsma, Sunstate Jewellers, CR Rail, Integral Homes, Australian Financial Advisers and Stockdale & Leggo. The funds raised from our Club Member sponsors have been used to produce our season’s Yearbook, so thank you to for your support. CLAC committee are striving towards building our own Clubhouse. Fundraising and grant applications will be a major factor to the success of our ‘dream’. If you can assist with any area please speak with any committee member. Lastly, a big thank you to our returning and new committee members who have already been hard at work doing all the preparation work for the new season – your all wonderful and a pleasure to work & laugh with whilst get the job done! This year sees our Caloundra club celebrating 30 years so hoping it will be our best season yet. Remember our little athletics moto of, ‘Family, Fun and Fitness’, get involved, it’s far more rewarding as parents and guardians, even Grandparents have a ball when they come down to watch their grandchildren compete.

Regards, Peter Haig Centre Manager

Every Friday night is our competition night so all results are recorded and a copy given to your child to keep. At the end of competition on a Friday night, please stay back for a social chat and enjoy the best steak burgers and sausages on the coast.

Our Story Caloundra Branch Little Athletics Inc. was formed at the end of 1983/84 season after several families who were travelling to Maroochy Centre decided it was time to establish a club in Caloundra. A meeting was called and chaired by Neil Thorburn at Moffat Beach, followed by a General Meeting and the committee was elected with Neil Thorburn as Centre Manager. The first season began in 1984/85 at Caloundra State Primary School on Saturday mornings. The first year’s registrations totalled 249 children. The second season, 1985/86, Caloundra hosted the Zone Intercentre Games at Caloundra High School oval. In its third year of operation, the club relocated to Caloundra High School for Saturday morning competition days. They remained there until 1994/95 where it was decided to relocate to Kawana Sports Complex on Friday night. That year the registrations again soared to 250 and the club hosted the Zone Intercentre Games. In 1995/96, the club returned to Caloundra State High School for Saturday morning competitions. In 1997/98, the club was forced to move to Saturday afternoon & numbers dropped to only 26 registered children.

After years of Under 15’s being the final year for our athletes, Queensland Little Athletics decided that from 2007/08 they would include Under 16’s and our first U16 athletes were Cindy Traves and Maddy Tolhurst Around 08/09 Season we saw the change from Zones to a new Sun Coast Region. This change increased the number of clubs with in our competition area considerably. 2009/10 saw the end of our deep fried food days, hot chips and Garlic Chicken balls were no more. Normal sized chocolate bar, potato chips and lollies were replaced by smaller serving sizes and healthier choices such as Steak Burgers with optional multigrain bread, Nacho’s and corn on the cob. With a desire for independence we moved out of the AFL clubhouse to run Friday nights from our shed in 2011/12. This was a tactical benefit for the canteen as the waft of cooked sausages and onions across the field increased sales immensely.

In 1998/99, a committed and conscientious committee decided the club needed to change the venue and compete on Friday nights to increase the registration numbers. After much discussion and negotiation, Caloundra Branch Little Athletics moved to Caloundra Rugby League Grounds, Gregory Street, Golden Beach and competed on Friday nights. The plan was to compete temporarily on the undersized main field until the second oval could be developed into a 400m track. The move was successful and the registrations increased to 130 children. Registrations continued to rise, with over 240 children registered in the 2000/2001 season. It was obvious that we needed more room and a proper sized 400m athletic track. The committee formed a sub-committee to investigate options available to the club. Various alternatives were investigated and eventually the committee decided to relocate to the AFL grounds. The AFL grounds provided us with room to operate more field events and enough area for a surveyor certified 400m athletic track. Gary Nalder’s first year as Centre Manager in 2005/06 was a huge one for our club as we hosted not only our annual Carnival and Pentathlon but also the Zone Relays and Zone Inter-centre Games. All three events were extremely successful and the feed back from other clubs was that, ‘they were amazed by the huge volunteer support base’, that we had at our club. Also that year Queensland Little Athletics altered its sun safe policy and insisted all uniforms have collars and sleeves and so our unmistakable Fluoro Yellow and Blue uniform was born.

88

We have now been at Carter Park (AFL grounds in the Winter season) for nearly 15 years and even with the advent of the University Club our numbers have still remained high at over 200 and last season 2013/14 we were heading towards 300. Over the last few years we’ve had a remarkable increase in the number of our athletes representing Caloundra at State Relays and Championships. Our team managers and coaches have to be commended for encouraging our athletes to be confident enough to compete at Regional competitions.

Many things have changed over the years but some things remain the same. Things like; • The Mozzie’s and Kookaburras. • Keith Heness, our Javelin and walks coach and official and the backbone of our club. • The inevitable rained out Friday nights, usually just before competition nominations close.

• Vicky from Athlete’s Foot, who is always there at our carnivals and Sign Ons. Supporting our club with her donation. • The smiles that Santa brings to the faces of our children and the parents at our annual Kawana Pool Christmas party. • And finally, the social and friendly atmosphere that our Caloundra club is renowned for.

Club Patron Caloundra Little Athletics would like to welcome back for a fourth season

Councillor Tim Dwyer as our Club Patron. We were looking for a person of high standing in our community who has links to, or an interest in athletics or sport so were delighted when Tim accepted our invitation as our Club Patron. Tim’s position is an honorary one, and while the Patron has no formal role, they may informally represent or provide influential support for the Association, its interests and those of its Members and their athletes. Tim has accepted this role over a 3 year period and has already met many of our athletes and families at our past Presentation Nights and Open Days.

Weekly Competition Information Everything you need to know Caloundra Little Athletics (CLAC) competes on Friday nights through the summer season from September to March.

During this time important announcements regarding club news and any upcoming events will be made to the parents and guardians.

Warm up begins at 5.15pm and the night generally finishes between 7- 8pm.

The athletes after warm up line up behind their respective Age Group Trolley bags. The Age Recorders will then take them to their first event.

Athletes should arrive at least 10 minutes early to ensure competition commences on schedule. The completion time depends upon the program, the number of competing athlete’s and of course the number of volunteers. Tiny Tot’s usually complete their activities by 6.30 – 6.45pm All athletes need to warm up as this very important. Our favourite life member and wonderful coach Keith Heness, assisted by our senior athletes will take the athletes for their warm up and stretching.

On Friday nights all athletes from Under 6 to Under 17 will complete a 5 event program which varies each week on a rotational basis. In December each year we hold a Club Pentathlon and our Christmas party, which is a relaxing way to finish the 1st half of our season. Generally, we return to competition on the third Friday of January, after the Christmas break.

Centre Rules

Program

• Children and spectators must check that the track is clear before crossing over. • Children and spectators must walk behind throwing circles. Shot puts and discuses can be lethal weapons. • The Javelin and Discus areas are “OUT OF BOUNDS” to all except the groups throwing and their officials. • Children must wear correct Centre Uniform and appropriate footwear to all Friday night competitions. • Spikes (U11 – U17) to be worn only during the permitted events; removed immediately after the events and must be carried in an appropriate bag. • No child is to use any of the equipment, at any time, unless supervised by a responsible adult. • No child is allowed to play on the High Jump mats. • Swearing and displays of bad sportsmanship are not permitted. • No smoking or alcohol allowed inside the track and field arena. • Refer any problems concerning the behaviour of children to the Centre Manager.

There are clear LAQ guidelines and rules for the Competition program, which are there to protect the little athlete from injury.

These rules are designed for the safety and wellbeing of everyone:

Our program will be displayed in the newsletter each week and on our website.

Based on this LAQ criteria we try to ensure each athlete has the opportunity to compete in a range of events and that they are age appropriate and in a specified order. The program also has to cater for the fact that not all of our age group numbers are balanced. With this in mind the Program officer’s position is difficult so if you feel there is a problem with the age group numbers or program please let committee know so we can try to address the issue.

Injuries

If an athlete is injured we will have an assigned first aid officer to attend to that injury. The first aid officer and all committee members communicate by two way radios. If assistance is required speak to the closest committee member. A first aid kit and ice and mosquito repellent are available in the canteen.

Cover is provided for injuries caused solely by active participation in officially organised events, practice and training sessions, and official functions.

Parental Involvement As in previous years we must insist that no child is left at the grounds without a parent or guardian present. It is part of our duty of care to our athletes and all exceptions must be explained to the Centre Manager. ‘Little Athletics’ is all about ‘FAMILY, FUN and FITNESS’. We encourage bringing the whole family together in a healthy outdoor sport, and meeting up with other parents and children with similar interests.

‘Little A’s is designed to be run by all the parents for the benefit of all the children.’ There are many simple things parents can do such as place judging; measuring throwing distances; raking sand; supervising children; and age recording. You may be more comfortable with; an occasional night helping in the canteen; cooking on the BBQ; or helping with set up or pack up. All help provided earns Family Levy points. Remember the more helpers we have the more efficient and friendly we are and the sooner we finish. If you are uncertain how you can help, just ask a Committee member wearing the blue and yellow shirts.

Family Levy A family Levy of $50 per family is charged at registration to ALL families (U6-U17 only). Tiny Tots are not required to pay a family levy. The levy will be refunded, if families meet the assistance criteria outlined below. No refund will be given if the criteria are not met. The refund will be issued at the end of season presentation night or carried over to following seasons Family Levy/Registration. Criteria: To receive a full refund of $50.00 a total of 40 points must be accumulated over the season. A partial refund of $15 is given if a minimum of 25 points is accumulated. A maximum number of 5 points can be earned per family per night. This was introduced to encourage more families, including grandparents, etc to participate. It is the responsibility of the helper to ensure that the family name is recorded on the Helper Sheets located in the back of the Age Group Folders. These forms are used to calculate family levy points for the refund so please write legibly. To assist us in correctly allocating the points write the athlete’s name in brackets beside the helper’s name. All parents who help out at the Caloundra Carnival; Relays; Regional’s; or State competitions need to advise the Team Manager so records can be updated. age groups. Parent involvement is, as you can imagine, compulsory, necessary and just plain fun for the tiny tot’s. They usually complete their activities by 6.30 – 6.45pm and at that stage the parent/s will be able to join in with the older competing siblings. Due to high numbers of interest we do have to limit the amount of tiny tots that we can have registered to ensure this continues to be a fun and safe environment for our future athletes

Fundraising

The balance of your athlete’s registration fee, after approximately half is forwarded to LAQ and the monies gained from fundraising are spent on; maintenance and purchase of equipment; ground maintenance including lighting and line marking paint; the Christmas party; Presentation Night; Trophies and normal operating expenses. Our fundraising activities for the season include: • The Open Day Carnival, which is one of our major fundraising events. For it to be successful we need a lot of volunteers on the day. If you can help either with set up or pack up; on the field; or at the canteen/BBQ/ drink and ice cream van please approach a committee member with your details. • One or two Bunnings BBQ’s which we make around $800 - $1000 profit. Some important points for parents and athletes to remember: • Little Athletics is about fun, participation and competing against your own personal best. • Training is about learning technique and developing skills to improve yourself because you, the athlete, want to. • Children are not mini adults therefore when it comes to training; you cannot simply modify an adult training program to suit without risking long term injury to the athlete or burn out. All training programs must be aimed to meet the individual needs of the developing junior athlete. • The individual athletes’ physical ability and maturity need to be considered. • Improved performance takes work and dedication. You can’t expect to improve with a couple of weeks training before a competition. To gain real benefits from training you must dedicate at least 6 to 8 weeks of training if you are serious about achieving your goals. • Athletes competing in Track and Field do not start to reach their full potential (peak) until around 18 years old. This is due to their growth, development and maturity levels. With the physical and emotional pressures and changes of growth, over training a young athlete will reduce their ability to grow and develop as well as risk injury. • Young athletes are encouraged to ‘Have a go’ at all events. Children should not specialise in any particular event. A ‘favourite’ event may change as they physically change through their developmental years. Injury and burn out are also a risk.

Coaching Children There are different stages of development to consider when coaching children. The following is an example of a five stage progression for Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD). At Little Athletics we will only focus on the first 3 development stages. 1. Fundamentals • Where the emphasis is on fun, developing basic fitness and general movement skills • Training age ideally 6 to 13 years. • 1 or 2 sessions a week 2. Learning to Train • Where the emphasis is to learn how to train and develop their general skills • Training age ideally 10 to 15 years. • 1 or 2 sessions a week 3. Training to Train • Where the emphasis is event(s) specific training • Training age ideally 13 to 17 years. • 2 to 3 sessions a week. The final 2 stages are developing more mature athletes. 4. Training to Compete • Where the emphasis is to correct weaknesses and develop athletic abilities • Training age ideally 15 to 19. 5. Training to Win • Where the emphasis is on enhancing performance • Training age ideally 18+.

Codes of Behaviour

CLAC has the following expected levels of conduct for its members; athletes; coaches; and officials. • A child’s basic training in good sportsmanship comes from the home! If children are interested, encourage them to participate. However, if your child is not willing, do not force them. • Focus upon your child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists your child in setting realistic goals related to his/her ability by reducing the emphasis on winning. • Teach your child that honest effort is as important as victory, so that the result of each competition is accepted without undue disappointment. • Encourage your child to always participate according to the rules. • Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a competition. • Remember children are involved in organised sports for their enjoyment, not yours. • Remember that children learn best by example and applaud good performances by all athletes. • If you disagree with an official, raise the issue through the appropriate channels rather than question the official’s judgement and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child’s involvement. • Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from children’s sporting activities. • Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child.

Athletes: It isn’t whether you win or lose, but how you play the game! • Compete and train for the “fun of it” not just to please your

parents or coach. • Play by the rules. • Never argue with the official’s decision. Let your Centre Manager or Coach ask any necessary questions. • Control your temper - no “mouthing off”, breaking equipment, throwing implements or other equipment. • Work equally for yourself and your team in relay and team events, your team’s performance will benefit and so will your own.! • Treat all athletes as you would like to be treated. Don’t interfere with, bully or take unfair advantage of any athlete. • Remember that the goal of training or competition is to have fun, improve your skills and feel good. Don’t be a show off or brag about your own performances. • Co-operate with your coach, club mates and opponents for without them you don’t have a competition. • CLAC has a “Hands Off” policy — Children and Parents are not permitted to have physical contact with another athlete or parent.

Coaches: The best coaches are more interested in their athlete’s

well-being than whether they win or lose!! • Be reasonable in your demands on the young athletes’ time, energy and enthusiasm. Remember that they have other interests.

• Teach your athletes that rules of the sport are mutual agreements, which no one should evade or break. • When coaching group athletes according to age, height, skill and physical maturity whenever possible. • Avoid over-attention to the talented athletes. The “just- average” athletes need and deserve equal time. • Remember that children compete for fun and enjoyment and that winning is only part of their motivation. Never ridicule or yell at the children for making mistakes or losing in a competition. • Ensure that equipment and facilities meet safety standards and are appropriate to the age and ability of the athletes. • The scheduling and length of coaching practice times and competition should take into consideration the maturity level of the children • Develop each athletes respect for the ability of opponents, as well as for the judgement of the officals and opposing athletes. • Follow the advice of a sports medicine physician when determining when an injured athlete is ready to compete or practice again. • Remember that children need a coach they can respect. Be generous with your praise when it is deserved, and set a good example. • Make a personal commitment to keep yourslef informed on sound coaching principles and the principles of growth and development of children.

Officials:

• Be impartial! Also, be consistent, objective and courteous. • Place the safety and welfare of the athletes abouve all else. Be alert to minimise dangerous physical play, fair or foul, especially competition days. • Accept responsibility for all actions taken. • Avoid any form of verbal contact with coaches, team officials, parents and spectators during competition. • Avoid any situation, which may lead to a conflict of interest, both on and off the feild. • Condemn all and every instance of unsportsmanshiplike, foul or unfair play. • Set a good example by the way you dress, speak and act towards athletes, coaches, officials, parents and spectators. • Show concern and caution towards sick and injured athletes. • Officiate to the age and/or experience of the athletes.

Grievance Policy

Caloundra Little Athletics recognizes that from time to time individual parents and members may have grievances that need to be resolved in the best interests of all parties. The aim of all parties in a grievance matter should be to resolve the matter by addressing it promptly and in an effective manner. Parents and members will have the right for a grievance to be heard through committee meetings. Procedure: The parent or members should raise the grievance in writing to the Secretary and present this at the next committee meeting in an attempt to resolve the grievance. If the grievance is still unresolved, the grievance will be put on the agenda for the next committee meeting to be resolved as soon as possible, both parties are to be present for committee meetings. Until the grievance is determined, both parties will continue normally with club etiquette and practice. No party shall be prejudiced as to the final resolution of the matter by the continuance of voluntary work!

CLAC Rules of Competition Track Events

Field Events (Throws)

Sprints • Two shots denote a false start and competitors must return to the starting line. • Competitors are permitted only 1 false start before disqualification.

Dicsus There is no specific rule for throwing a discus. But it must be thrown from within the throwing circle and must land before the athlete can leave by the BACK of the circle. A foul ‘F’ is recorded if the discus lands outside the marked area or the athlete steps out of the circle or on the iron band during the throw. To measure, spike where the discus lands then pull the tape through the centre of the circle and measure from the inside edge of the rim.

Laned Events (all races up to and including 400m) Starter gives three commands: 1. “On your Marks” Put one foot UP to line. 2. “Set” Athlete leans forward onto front foot, opposite arm is held out in front for balance. 3. “Pistol is fired” Athlete runs, remaining in lane for entire race AND until told to move by Official. Distance Races Pack Start (all race over 400m) Athletes don’t have to run in allocated lanes except at the start. Starter gives two commands: 1. “On your Marks” Put one foot UP to line 2. “Pistol Fires” Athletes begin Walks Pack Start Race walking is a progression of steps so taken that unbroken contact with the ground is maintained. The advancing leg shall be straightened (ie not bent at the knee) from the moment of first contact with the ground until the vertical upright position. If the athlete is not given a time then a ‘C’ for competed is recorded.

Relays

• Two types may be run - circular and shuttles for U6, U7 and U8. • Circular relay - all children run in the same direction around the track with the baton being carried in the right hand (1st runner) left hand (2nd runner) right hand (3rd runner) and left hand (4th runner). Runners 2 and 4 should be towards the outside of the lane when moving the baton. If this is done, changing hands with the baton is not necessary so the possibility of dropping it is reduced. • Shuttle relay - the runners face each other from opposite ends of the straight and pass the baton as they reach their partner waiting at the other end of the straight.

Javelin

The Javelin is held at the grip and thrown over the shoulder or upper arm. It must strike the ground with the tip of the metal head first. It doesn’t have to stick in the ground. The JAVELIN must always be carried in an UPRIGHT position. • The athlete must not touch or pass over the foul throw line. • Once the javelin has landed the athlete must leave the run up area from behind the foul throw line. • A foul ‘F’ is recorded if; a slinging action is used; the javelin lands on or outside the sector lines; the athlete turns their back to the throwing area during the run up. • The throw is measured by pulling the tape from the ground strike through the centre of the throwing area and down the run up area to point marked on the run up area Measurement is read at the run up side of the foul throw line.

Field Events (Jumps) HIgh Jump • Scissors Technique U8-U17: The athlete must run up and take off from ONE leading foot. An attempt must be made for the feet to touch the mat first. • Fosbury Flop Technique U12-17 ONLY: This technique cannot be attempted before athlete has been given correct training. • 3 Attempts to clear the height. • The bar height is measured at the middle of the bar and to the top of the bar. The outer edges must measure equal heights and be set so that the centre of the bar is at the stipulated height. • A failure is given if the athlete knocks the bar off the supports. If the jump is successful the athlete must wait until the bar is raised before having another jump. Long Jump • Take off foot must be behind or on mat/board. • They must walk out of the pit forwards away from jump mark. • A foul ‘F’ is recorded if the foot protrudes over the front of the mat/board. • U6-U12 - Measurement is taken from the front of the foot imprint made by the take-off foot to the indentation left by the athlete in the sand pit closest to the take-off area. • U13-U17 - Measure from the edge of the board nearest the pit unless the athlete takes off before the board. Triple Jump Triple has three distinct phases which must be achieved: 1. HOP - Take off from the mat/board on ONE foot and land on the SAME foot. 2. STEP - Take off from that foot and land on the OTHER foot. 3. JUMP - Jump forwards and land in the pit on two feet. The runway is marked with 3 boards marked at 5m, 7m and 9m. The athlete can choose which of these boards can be their take-off mark. • U11-U12 - athletes take off from a mat place on the board. • U13-U17 - athletes take off from the board.

Caloundra Open Day Carnival

On Saturday 6th December we will be holding our Annual Caloundra Carnival at the grounds. Athletes from Under 6 to Opens may compete in up to 6 events and 1st, 2nd and 3rd place medals are awarded. The carnival is not compulsory but the athletes, including parents who do compete, all have a great day, testing their skills and abilities against other athletes from many centres in South East Queensland. The open events are a time for the parents and older siblings and guardians to show their athletic skills and it can get quite competitive amongst some of them, especially in the Open Javelin and 100m dash. There is an enormous amount of time and effort that goes into planning and running a carnival of this size and it is a great experience for all those involved. Volunteers are needed on and before the big day. Assistance is needed for field prep, setting up the shade tents and other equipment, recording, cooking on the BBQ, helping in the canteen, packing up at the end of the day etc. So please put your hand up to help, remember that double Family Levy points can be earned.

CAPS Program for Teenagers

Challenge, Achievement and Pathways in Sport

2013/14 Acknowledgements

CAPS is a 3 Step leadership development program for teenagers which can lead to a Sport Leader Award. It can open up opportunities for a career in Sports Administration, coaching or other sports related support services. Participants develop skills, gain knowledge and achieve the relevant certificates in a wide range of areas such as First Aid or coaching by completing a certain required number of hours in their selected pathways. They are given a wide range of pathway choices including Sports Health; Participation; Coaching; Officiating; Administration; and Event/Team Management. Their progress and achievements are monitored by the CAPS co-ordinator. CAPS participants are all teenagers who work together and develop a sense of commitment, of confidence and of leadership, which supports their personal development. They do not need to be athletic quite the contrary. Their presence strengthens our volunteer base at club, regional, and state level. It also creates links between the club and the state sporting organisation. Club support and respect for these teenager participants is much appreciated. Teenagers, choose to do the CAPS program for a range of reasons such as; having an interest in continuing their involvement in athletics in a more adult role; to complement a career choice; wanting to volunteer and support an organisation in which they have an interest; or even just wishing to improve their employment resume. If you have a teenager or are a teenager who would like to try the CAPS program contact CLAC CAPS co-ordinator,

Medibank Senior Carnival/ Junior Pentathlon

2nd November 2014 at State Athletics Facility (SAF), Kessels Rd, Nathan • Senior Carnival is for all members from Under 11‘s to Under 17‘s. It is a marvelous opportunity to compete against other athletes from all over Queensland and gain more competition experience. Although it is competitive, no medals are given as athletes from all abilities are encouraged to attend. Additionally, it allows the athletes of the Under 13 age group to register performances, which the State Team Selectors may need to refer too when selecting the State Team. • Junior Pentathlon is for all U9—U10’s. Once again, we appreciate the effort put in by all our competitors who attend these carnivals. Whilst they are competing, they are making new friends and participating in a healthy outdoor activity and most of all having FUN.

Nordic Sport Junior Carnival/ Senior Pentathlon 1st March 2015 at State Athletics Facility (SAF) Kessels Rd, Nathan.

• Junior Carnival is for all Under 7 to Under 10 athletes. It has proven to be an enjoyable day for the enthusiastic athletes in the younger age groups. There are no finals or medallions but it gives the children an opportunity to compete against other athletes from all over Queensland. • The senior pentathlon is a carnival where athletes can compete in five set events (hurdles, 100m, 800m, jump event and throw event). Points are allocated in each event according to the distances and times recorded. The maximum number of points for each event is 1200 which is based on the Australian Best Performance. The points are then calculated on a pro rata basis from the ABP.

2013/14 State Championship Report Last seasons QLAA State Championships were held for the very first time at Barlow Park in Cairns. Due to the cost involved in competing such a distance away, we were represented by a smaller team than at the past 3 State Championships. However our 26 athletes competing in over 70 events still produced some formidable results. Our team was admirably led by Shamini Bradfield, Dylan Cole and Connor Lehmann - three of our Under 17 athletes competing in their last Little Athletics competition. Thank you to these athletes for their exemplary display of sportsmanship and for guiding our athletes through these championships. The family and friends that attended would agree that all our athletes deserved medals as the conditions were at times absolutely atrocious – it was either teeming down with rain or scorching hot and these conditions truly tested all our athletes. With that being said, unfortunately not everyone can come away with a medal but three athletes did: Under 9 Amelita Case Silver Long Jump Under 13 Callum Haig Bronze 1500m Walk Under 11 Max Johnson Silver 200m Thank you again to the family, friends and coaches who made the trip to Cairns. The support shown to all our athletes was very much appreciated. Additionally thank you to those who assisted with officiating in very trying conditions. This season the State Championships return to Brisbane. With the calibre of athletes we have, we are certain once again to be represented by a sizeable team. Cristine Case Team Manager

One of the aims in Little Athletics is to improve individual athletic performance and to provide incentives for athletes to improve through collaboration with “Family, Fun and Fitness”. Everyone likes to win, but not all are able to. All however are capable of improving and achieving a worthwhile standard. Our Most Improved Award is therefore aimed at recognising and rewarding improvers, not just winners. Criteria Points are totalled and the athlete with the highest amount is awarded Most Improved. 1 point allocated per event attempted 2 points if equal PB 3 points if improving on PB 1 point for each event competed in Open day/Regional Relays/Regional Championship. Note: For new athletes their beginning or base line PB is the first time, distance or measurement that is recorded for each event. The same applies for athletes starting in new age group with a new event included, e.g. heavier shot/ discus. Returning athletes use the last season recorded PB’s. Athlete demonstrates a high degree of sportsmanship. Athlete abides by all Centre rules and is respectful of fellow Athletes and Official ATTENDANCE CRITERIA - An athlete must compete a minimum of 50% of times before and after Christmas break to qualify for our Trophies and Awards. U11 Girls

In 2013 Jessica Haig proposed the establishment of a perpetual Encouragement Award for the junior members of Caloundra Little Athletics. “I have been a member of the Caloundra Little Athletics Club for over 10 years and have thoroughly loved the people, competition, sportsmanship, atmosphere and challenging myself. I would like to give back to the club that has given me such a wonderful grounding in athletics and camaraderie. I remember in my early days at CLAC in some events I was not able to achieve what the other athletes of my age could attain – but I was always enthusiastic, persistent and wanted to constantly improve. Because of this attitude I have continued to grow as a person and as an athlete and am now able to perform competitively at a high level in the sport, whilst still loving every minute of it.” Jessica Haig Criteria · Be in the age groups U6 - U11 · Show sportsmanship, enthusiasm and respect. · Be willing to compete in all events to the best of their ability. · Participate in Regional Relays and the Caloundra Open Day · Always have fun!
