CATHERINE ST-PIERRE Hi, I’m Cat. I’m a soon to be M.Arch from Montreal. I’m a lover of textures, colours, and atmospheres. I’m a creator, but I’m a listener first. I strive to design architecture that captures the essence of an urban/natural landscape to expose it in a simple, relatable way. I see it as a language to translate what people feel but cannot describe. I think having awareness that is synchronously spatial, social, and environmental makes for a more meaningful architecture.

roots and stoneS This is an adaptive-reuse project for an addition to Sophie-Barat High School in Montreal. It integrates the ruin of the first institutional pavilion on the site. This proposition creates a comfortable space for students that is both safe and stimulating while promoting their interaction with nature and other members of the community. This project is a series of spaces for sharing knowledge and skills. Therefore, teamwork-friendly classrooms, gathering spaces and multiple nooks stimulate the exchange of ideas. The ruin is delicately integrated to the new construction and hints of its presence appear throughout the building. This sustainable design is positioned on the site in a way to preserve the existing trees and optimize natural lighting.

Share don’t own This project is a personal approach to the Maker Movement. The site is in the Dogpatch area in San Francisco, California. Spaces designed to promote sharing are at the core of this innovative residential project. The goal is to provide a living, working and making environment where people feel free to try new things without dealing with the commitment of buying and owning tools or machinery. The sharing of ideas, resources, and devices with family and friends is what defines this community. By creating a system of opportunities for borrowing and renting, priorities shift from the material to the experiential aspect of hobbies, work, and activities.

the TRAIL This project has been done in response to the S>O project. The exercise was, as a team of two students, to filter the essence of two projects and blend them into a new one. Trail is a habitat that is constantly evolving, and where sharing, creating and exploring encourages people to experiment and innovate. It is an environment in which a balance between mental and physical health acts as a catalyst and as a framework for the design process. The result allows creative minds to thrive through the integration of active living as a pivotal part of the design process. Subduction This project is a fifth pavilion for the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in downtown Montreal. The form of the project is a simple expression of the essence of its program. Two uncluttered volumes are superimposed: one with exhibition spaces over one with educational spaces for children. An analogy with the geological phenomenon of subduction guides the relationship between these two volumes. The difference in materiality accentuates the contrast between the two entities: concrete represents the adaptability of youth while marble pays homage to the transcendence of the museum through the ages.

The two masses are connected by a resulting glass figure: the interstice. This space is the only one in which it is possible to see and interact with the structure, and thus to feel the tension of movement between the two volumes. It acts as a multifunctional and event space that provides guests with a lush outdoor area.

The interstitial level provides a break between the two programmatic volumes: exhibition halls and educational spaces. Its free plan provides an inspiring and unrestricted space for hosting various ephemeral events.

lake flato architects This non-exhaustive selection of documents illustrates my work and approach as part of the residential studio at Lake Flato Architects. I am focused on creating and representing spaces that are functional, personal, and respectful towards the natural environment. I developed skills for deeper listening, harnessed sensitivity, and thorough attention to detail.

PhotographY I need to stroll for hours in a city to actually feel it and understand it. Walking provides just the right speed, independence, and proximity to remain a conscious observer. Photography is my outlet to suspend and share those perceptions. I have a love for the beautiful ordinary and gritty textures.
