Conceive Cr Committee Names School System

The steering committee has been meeting regularly and recently agreed on the name for the new school system: Catholic Community Schools. It also has written a mission statement for the new system and created a basic framework for its operation. The committee is currently in the process of appointing a finance task force, which will include members from the wider community, to compile a draft budget for the new system.

Bishop Kettler Interviewed on KYES www.stcdio.org/bishop-kettlers-interview-confirmation-kyes/

"We have a number of Catholic schools here that I think are important. In the years ahead, I want to look at and work at how we can cooperate better. Enrollments are going down and the costs are going up, so how can we work together to help each other across the diocese. I'm looking seriously at that." - Bishop Donald Kettler

"I have convened a steering committee to design a single Catholic school system for the St. Cloud metro area and surrounding communities. This system would build on the collaboration and resourcesharing already happening among our schools. And, it would ensure that families — now and for generations to come — have access to a stable Catholic education for their children from pre-K through high school." - Bishop Donald Kettler

CCS Launches Inaugural Year

CCS Board Selects Leadership Team

“We are working together to create a very dynamic school system that is cutting edge, that helps build our students fully, both intellectually and with their faith, to build on ‘what is’ and to become greater,” said Father Ron Weyrens, who was named chair of the board of directors. As part of their commitment to that goal, board members determined the need to have a leadership team. Its members, called “coordinators of transition,” will provide direction and JUN assistance to the board.

Catholic Community Schools officially launches for the 2017-2018 school year. Throughout the year the Board of Directors, principals, pastors and other stakeholders will meet to lay the groundwork for the implementation of our new school system in and around the St. Cloud metro area.

Kevin Powers Named Superintendent

Kevin Powers, who has served as principal for the last four years at St. Margaret of Scotland School in Chicago, has been selected to be the superintendent of Catholic Community Schools (CCS), a new consolidated school system in the St. Cloud metro area. “His vision for Catholic Community Schools will strengthen efforts to provide a top-notch education as we form the next generation of leaders for our world and our Church." Father Ron Weyrens, chair of the CCS board of directors, said Powers has a gift for connecting with people and articulating a vision, which will help “draw us together and move us forward as we strengthen our schools and the Catholic presence here in our communities.”

Bishop Kettler moves forward with plan to create CCS

“It’s an important desire of mine that all of our Catholic schools work together in every way possible, and this is the way we need to go forward,” he told The Visitor Feb. 9. “The steering committee did superb work over the last year looking at the possibilities and putting together a plan that I think is as good as it can be at this time.” - Bishop Donald Kettler

On July 1, 2017 a new day shined down with the official start of Catholic Community Schools. Three years ago, Bishop Kettler spoke on the KYES radio station about the importance of our Catholic schools coming together, supporting each other and growing. After many meetings, listening sessions and interviews we are excited to be at this place. With the creation of Catholic Community Schools, we know that our schools, parishes and communities will flourish in many ways: better use of resources, collaboration with staff members, increased community presence, stronger schools and most importantly serving more students and families. Catholic Community Schools is compromised of eight elementary schools and one high school in and around the St. Cloud metro area. Our new regional school system has over 1980 students, 200 employees, 15 participating parishes and almost a $16 million budget. Our mission is very simple: “to strengthen the Catholic Church and society by educating her people at

an unparalleled level of excellence while teaching, sharing, and living the gospel message of Jesus Christ.”

Commun

In order to achieve our mission, Catholic Community Schools will focus on providing a strong and distinctly Catholic education for our students, recruiting and retaining highly talented teachers and staff and providing an excellent faith filled experience for students, staff and families. We know that some of these initiatives will be accomplished earlier than others and some will take a little longer, but we know that Catholic Community Schools will have an everlasting impact on our students, families and communities. Catholic Community Schools will help ensure that Catholic education not only survives but thrives for generations to come.

We invite you to learn more about Catholic Community Schools in this magazine, on our new website: www.catholiccommunityschools.org or come check us out. Our schools are families, and we know that if you come visit them you won’t want to leave. If you have any questions,

ideas, comments or just want to connect do not hesitate to reach out to the individual schools or me directly. God bless,

Collaboration Support Principals

Teachers

Our principals are the faces and leaders of our schools. We are blessed to have amazing Catholic leaders working with our teachers, students and families here in Catholic Community Schools. Our principals have been coming together over the past few years in many ways to strengthen themselves as leaders and our schools:

Our teachers are the most important resource and asset to our students. It is important that our teachers continually learn and grow professionally in the everchanging world of education. Over the past two years our teachers have come together in many different ways throughout Catholic Community Schools:

Monthly principal meetings to meet, discuss and support each other on various topics facing our schools.

Principal retreat at St. John’s University this October, focusing on our calling as leaders and how we can better support our fellow principals and teachers.

Professional Development: In August 2017 all teachers in PK-6th grade met at St. Francis Xavier School for curriculum mapping and planning for English and Language Arts over a three day period.

Principals have taken on different roles to support Catholic Community Schools: creation of system school calendar, development of professional development plans, sharing of resources and visiting each other’s schools to support each other.

Professional Learning Communities: Throughout the 2017-2018 school year, teachers will meet with each other during and after school to review the work done in August. Teachers are broken up by grade level groups to better support each other.

Classroom Observations: teachers will visit different schools and classrooms to observe each other, provide feedback and support. This allows teachers to learn from each other and support each other. Our principals provide substitutes, time and support to make this happen.

All Saints Academy formed six years ago as a collaboration between four different schools: St. Peter, Paul and Michael (two campuses), St. Joseph Waite Park, and St. Joseph in St. Joseph. Our four founding schools have a long history of providing exceptional educational experiences for students. When these schools came together, formed a new identity, built community and shared resources, they continued the long tradition of Catholic education with even deeper and richer experiences for students. All Saints Academy has worked to create community among our students with our morning meeting work around our values: Care Deeply, Speak Kindly, Share Generously, and Serve Willingly. These faith based values are embedded in all areas of our educational experience. Sixth graders participate in Catholic social teaching projects where students identify a need in our community and create opportunities to serve that need, such as volunteering at Place of Hope, reading to puppies at the Humane Society, organizing a food drive for Catholic Charities, and holding a bake sale to raise funds for these projects. Our students also engage in oneto-one learning with iPads and Chromebooks, STEM programming with Project Lead the Way and Makerspace, leadership opportunities with our morning meetings, and service opportunities right at our school. Our students live out our values every day both at All Saints Academy and in the broader community. When I think about the role of All Saints Academy in Catholic Community Schools and the role of Catholic Community Schools in All Saints Academy, I see a symbiotic relationship of mutual need and support. Catholic Community Schools helps All Saints further our mission by supporting our programs that help develop our students’ potential as learners, leaders, and lovers of Christ, who live out these traits in their faith life and offer their gifts to global community. All Saints also supports Catholic Community Schools in modeling the mission in our everyday activities and through deep connection to Christ in all we do. - Paula Leider, Principal

Connections to our heritage and our community permeate so much of the atmosphere at the St. Joseph campus of All Saints Academy. In 1926, fifty years after the first log church and school were built in St. Joseph, the current school building was constructed. Located in the heart of the town, it also served as a community center. Later the parish school became a laboratory school for the College of St. Benedict’s education department until 1994. Six years ago, the St. Joseph Lab School became a part of an even larger community of three neighboring Catholic schools when it joined St. Peter, Paul and Michael and St. Joseph Waite Park to become part of the All Saints Academy family. With the joining of these schools, we built a larger community among the schools, and began to share our resources. Our connections to heritage and community continue today. The school building itself reflects the community atmosphere of All Saints Academy - St. Joseph. Classrooms on each floor surround a common area where students can work with groups, teachers can extend their classrooms, and college students from CSB and SJU can tutor children in small groups or one-on-one. Our ASA staff have been involved in professional development with the other Catholic Community Schools schools to help teachers better meet academic standards. We have also invested in modern technology to complement our strong heritage: ASA students are engaged in one-to-one learning with iPads and Chromebooks, as well as STEM programming with Project Lead the Way. An excellent Spanish program that contributes to the awareness of our global community begins in our Montessori Preschool, and students are encouraged every day to live out our values through multiple opportunities for leadership, prayer and service projects that help the broader community. All Saints Academy looks forward to joining the larger Catholic Community Schools community and continuing its mission to develop students’ potential as learners, leaders, and lovers of Christ-- and to send forth students who live out these traits in their faith life and offer their gifts to the global community. - Karl Terhaar, Principal

Holy Cross School is located in Marty. The school began operation in 1905, 14 years after Holy Cross Church was constructed, with Benedictine nuns running the school. Commonly referred to as Pearl Lake because of the nearby body of water, Marty got its name in 1901. Because the name Pearl Lake was already claimed, townsfolk chose the name Marty after the Most Reverend Martin Marty, bishop of the St. Cloud Diocese. Holy Cross School provides the holistic education of students through Gospel values, academic excellence and positive concepts of self-worth in a stimulating and nurturing environment. We offer Chromebooks for all fourth through sixth graders. We use iPads for students in PreK to third grade. Each classroom has a Smartboard for teachers and students to utilize. Technology and keyboarding are also part of our curriculum. Our Kindergarten through sixth grade teachers have been trained in the Barton Learning System, to assist students who learn with processing disorders such as dyslexia. We also offer an on-site tutor to work with dyslexic students during their school day, so they don’t have to attend tutoring sessions after school. Holy Cross looks forward to being an asset to Catholic Community Schools by being a resource for families struggling to find a good learning fit for their dyslexic children. We also hope that by staying current on the latest curriculum and technology, we will continue to send students on to middle school well above average in testing and learning abilities. We also continue to educate our students on the importance of faith in God, community service, along with love and understanding for all mankind. - Melissa Johnson, Lead Teacher

C AT H O L I C S C H O O L When St. Anthony School and Holy Spirit School in St. Cloud merged in the fall of 1995, the rich histories of each school combined to form St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School. St. Anthony School opened in the fall of 1921 on the north side of St. Cloud and Holy Spirit School opened at the site of our current school in 1950. The strong traditions of these two great schools gave St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School the foundation which continues to educate our students today. Our students today are not unlike those of the early years at St. Anthony’s and Holy Spirit; they are eager to learn, love to have fun, and want to be challenged. The teachers at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton have made a commitment to become lifelong learners by implementing programs that impact student achievement while keeping the students rooted in Catholic traditions. When you visit us at SEAS, you may encounter students working on a Genius Hour project, applying math concepts to a knitting project, working on a service project for the local nursing home, or editing a video. While asking students what they love about SEAS, one fifth grade student responded “It is like we are one family where everyone cares about me.” As we transition to Catholic Community Schools, that familylike atmosphere will continue here at SEAS, while we become part of a bigger family of Catholic schools in the St. Cloud Area. Through teacher collaboration, student opportunities and community events, the Catholic Community Schools Family is going to positively impact spiritual, emotional, and intellectual development at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. - Kelly Vangsness, Principal

We at St. Francis Xavier welcome you to our faith filled family. We have a long history steeped in the Catholic tradition of service, care, education and dignity for all. The school was started by Fr. Ebner with the first class starting in the fall of 1961 with 231 students in grades 1-6. Teaching those 231 students were six Notre Dame Sisters from Mankato and one lay teacher in eight classrooms. For the next 25 years; programing continued to grow, the parent association began in 1964, fundraisers started to help with funding needs, Franny Flier School Newsletter was born with contributions from students, Pastor and principal, and also more lay staff working in the school. Out teachers have been willing to undertake new programing such as a STEM curriculum that engages students in hands-on activities, projects, and problems and empowers them to solve real-world challenges. In addition to traditional spelling lists, all students in grades 1-6 develop a deep and rich vocabulary through intentional development of word usage by reading novels, increased opportunities for writing and presenting ideas creatively. To assist with the teaching and learning process all students in grades 4-6 have their own digital tablets that allow them to access learning from school and home. Our school has embarked on a program that is shifting the culture and climate to one that encourages all to develop their potential to think, learn and communicate effectively and make a positive difference in the lives of others and themselves. Faith and service is the cornerstone of our work. Each and every interaction with our students, families and staff occurs through the lens of respect for the dignity of others within our community and in the greater community. Service is how we impact those outside of our school community. In addition every classroom has a service project that they take on each year. These projects can range from preschoolers participating in Operation Christmas Child to fifth graders going to a nursing home monthly to spend time with the elderly community to our first graders hosting a thank you social after mass for all parishioners who attend Friday mass with us. As we look to the future our goals will be to continue to develop the whole child; spiritual, academic, social, emotional and physical in a nurturing and supportive environment. - Kathy Kockler, Principal

St. Katharine Drexel School has a rich history of providing a quality, Catholic education in the St. Cloud and Sauk Rapids communities dating back to the late 1800’s. Our system is supported by St. Mary’s Cathedral, St. Augustine and Sacred Heart parishes. St. Katharine Drexel grew out of a St. Augustine/St. Mary’s Cathedral merger in the fall of 2002 and a second merger with Sacred Heart in the fall of 2011. St. Katharine Drexel is a modern day saint who founded Catholic schools around the nation. Currently 315 preschool through sixth grade students call SKD home. We have strong academic programming that ensures success for all. We offer assistance for students with dyslexia through the Barton reading program that is taught in classrooms as well as through one on one coaching. We continue to challenge our students with hands on learning and real world experiences in a variety of ways. Some of these include Genius Hour, Lego engineering kits, virtual classrooms and more. While academics are at the forefront of our programs, the most important part of our mission is to help our students continue to grow and develop in their faith. From daily prayer, praying the rosary during October and May, attending weekly mass and participating in service projects throughout the year, our students not only learn about their faith but are encouraged to walk with Christ each day. We are blessed to be a part of supportive parishes and have three priests who often visit our cafeteria, classrooms and playground. We are thrilled to be a part of Catholic Community Schools and look forward to a strong future of continued collaboration on professional development, band and orchestra programs and more. - Erin Hatlestad, Principal

St. Mary Help of Christians School One of the most important decisions a parent makes is about the education of their child. At St. Mary Help of Christians School, we value that decision and the trust our parents put in us. Every day we renew our commitment to work hard to educate our students and help them become self-confident and reach their full potential. Benedictine sisters began teaching in our school in 1886. As a parish school with over 130 years of history in St. Augusta, we are proud of our Catholic traditions and practices. Many of the events and activities in our school community have been with us for years. Some of our students have parents who attended SMHOCS, and a few even have grandparents who attended! Our faith-filled educators are devoted to the physical, intellectual and spiritual growth of our students. We are blessed with over 120 students, all evolving through a strong value-centered Catholic education. While our traditions and faith are foundational to our school community, so are twenty-first century educational innovations. We strive to keep up with the educational demands of our student population. Every instructional classroom contains a SMART Board and iPads, some classrooms are beginning to implement Chromebooks — valuable tools for teachers and students. Our computer lab and library are both constantly being upgraded and improved with technology enhancements. As principal of St. Mary Help of Christians School, I am excited about the formation of Catholic Community Schools as I believe it is an opportunity for Catholic education to grow as each school has something very special to offer. We are a devoted community of educators, committed to our tradition of excellence in education in the St. Cloud area. - Kelly Kirks, Principal

St. Wendelin Catholic School St. Wendelin School shares a long history with the Luxemburg community and the Benedictine Sisters. Our existence dates back to the mid 1800’s. The Benedictine Sisters arrived in Luxemburg in 1881 with a continued presence until 2013. St. Wendelin School evolved from a one room schoolhouse, to a threeroom school with a bell tower, to the building that stands strong today. Third generation students are present in our school today. St. Wendelin School continues to hold a strong connection with the Luxemburg community. Our multi-aged classrooms allow students to learn from both their teacher and classmates. We are a close-knit family sharing in a love for children, learning, and living our faith. Technology is alive in our building with the daily use of computers, Smartboards, and iPads. St. Wendelin School welcomes the formation of Catholic Community Schools with open arms. We embrace the collaboration with teachers and resources. In 1902, Sister Elizabeth Irving, OSB, principal of Holy Angels Grade School, with approval of Father Edward Jones, pastor of Holy Angels Parish, opened a ninth grade of 25 students, thus beginning a Cathedral High School. Each successive year thereafter another grade was added until a four-year high school curriculum was established. Over 100 years later Cathedral enrolls approximately 670 students in grades 7-12. Cathedral High School serves students from all of the parishes in St. Cloud and some surrounding communities. Last year, 7th graders came from fifteen different schools. Cathedral offers a college preparatory curriculum with nine AP courses. All students take theology every year, and students are required to complete 70 hours of service for graduation. Our students attend Mass weekly and each grade attends a retreat once a year. Students may choose among four different world languages: Spanish, German, Chinese, and American Sign Language. Cathedral students all receive a MacBook Air for their use in the classroom. Cathedral offers student services through Special Education and other accommodation plans. Families receive over $1,000,000 in financial aid each year. Our classes are kept at approximately 25 students. There are over 50 sports and activities for students to choose from each year, and our participation rate is often near 90%. Cathedral High School is in the midst of a Capital Campaign to finish raising money for a new building to be constructed in the north parking lot with views of the Mississippi River. This building will be built with 21st century learning in mind, focusing on STEM education. This new building will be real evidence that our Catholic schools are thriving and providing an outstanding education. With the creation of Catholic Community Schools, Cathedral High School will be able to continue the great foundation laid by our elementary schools and offer a strong academic, extra-curricular and faith-based middle school and high school for all students. - Lynn Grewing, Principal

The formation of Catholic Community Schools is essential to build upon the many strengths of our individual schools. As we work together with greater collaboration, we can learn from each others' successes, benefit from shared resources and ideas, and reduce duplication of effort. Catholic education is a vital tool for evangelization, planting the seeds of faith, service, and spiritual life early in each child's life and supporting our families, the 'domestic Church' in each home. The detailed and gradual work of crafting this collaboration is an investment in a bright future for our schools and parishes, and a concrete way to honor the same work done by our predecessors to create these communities of faith and learning in years past. - Fr. Tom Knoblach, CCS Board Member and Cathedral High School Board Chair
