JOY OF GIVING
We see God at work in those we serve as they experience the joy of responding to God’s call: caring for the poor, teaching, and spreading His word.
He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. Colossians 1:28

“I’m an owner of one of Napa Valley’s most famous vineyards, Chateau Montelena. Every year we bless the grapes of our vineyard. Wine has special significance in human history and our Catholic faith. It’s part of family celebrations, and when consecrated in the Mass, can be a part of our salvation. I grew up in Greeley and joined the Catholic Church several years after marrying my late husband, Jim. We became aware of the great sacrifices and impact of every priest through our close friendship with Jim’s late brother, a priest in Los Angeles. I give a lot of my time, prayers and financial support to St. John Vianney Theological Seminary, because without priests there would be no sacraments. Though I live in California, I still feel connected to Denver. It’s as though good seed has been planted there and is growing. I believe we’re all called to spread the Kingdom of God. When I give, I feel like I’m part of something bigger than myself.” – Judy Barrett

“I’ve had a love for the Lord since my earliest childhood days in Illinois. Helping people has been a priority, even in little ways. I believe we’re called to be good stewards of all God has given us and to take care of others. Priests have always been there for me, just in the nick of time. Whether it was a bus fare to Wyoming or escaping an unhealthy relationship, there was a priest to help me along. That’s why I support the formation of priests at seminaries in Denver, including Redemptoris Mater Seminary. I created an endowment fund through The Catholic Foundation which allows me to invest in those who will become our next generation of priests. I want to finish this life well and share the greatest gift I’ve received—God’s love for me. This includes providing for those who have made a difference in my life and in the lives of others.” – Betty Willis

“It was an absolute miracle. When I received an unexpected windfall from selling my business, my wife and I decided to use this blessing to support six Catholic high schools, including Bishop Machebeuf High School. My own Catholic education was the best thing that happened to me. So my wife, Marge, and I established a scholarship fund through The Catholic Foundation. I meet with the student recipients. Above all else, we want them to make prayer and Scripture reading a habit. Scripture tells us we’re to be Christ’s ambassadors. I want to encourage youth to know and love Christ. That can be tough in a secular world. One thing Marge and I learned is God cannot be outdone in generosity. We’ve received more than we’ve given. It seems impossible, but it’s the way He works. When we give, we can feel God working through us to accomplish His will.” – Bill Wagner

“When we’re not running our business, Longmont Florist, we’re often at Holy Family High School. Three of our children are Holy Family graduates and in college; our youngest graduates next year. Being involved at the school is important to us. We coach boys basketball and volunteer on the Tiger Gala committee. Catholic education plays a big part in developing great character and a strong faith through rigorous academics and spiritual retreats. While at school, kids grow into living a life of service. Students are well prepared for college and for life. Holy Family gives us hope for the future. We will contribute long after our kids have graduated. We want to see all kids benefit from a Catholic education. Our support fulfills our call from God to give. We take what God expects of us seriously.” – Lisa and Brad Golter

Applicants for aid typically a family of four
with a $32,467 annual income. Each family contributes to educational expenses.
“We each came to Denver with a mission to help serve others who are less fortunate. We came separately from Ohio and Michigan to teach at Guardian Angels School, an inner-city Catholic school that receives support from Seeds of Hope, and to work with the poor as a Colorado Vincentian Volunteer. It was here that our paths crossed, and the framework to continue giving was set. We are grateful for the opportunity to attend Catholic schools and universities and for the blessings we have. We believe strongly in Catholic education and the opportunity for children to know Christ through education. That’s why we give to Seeds of Hope and support its mission to make Catholic education available to low-income families. Giving makes us feel connected to others. And it’s contagious. We hope we can be an example to our family, friends and the people we meet in Denver. Working together, we can go a long way in supporting our Catholic schools.“ – Dan and Sarah Grey

“Protecting the dignity of life from conception to natural death is something we hold close in our hearts. We have five children and five grandchildren. We once struggled with providing for our family years ago after we had both lost our jobs. The generosity of others taught us the meaning of giving. The work of Marisol Health to protect life at its earliest stages inspired us to pass on the generosity we once received. We trust that when we give to Catholic Charities, God is working to support other families and children in need. We believe those we give to today will be the donors of tomorrow.” – John and Terri Schuster

“My husband, Tim, and I made this our family mantra: to whom much is given, much is required. We are grateful for the blessings in our lives, so we make giving back a priority. We don’t have to look far to fulfill our obligation for charitable giving. Denver has an incredible wealth of apostolates and fantastic lay organizations. We love Samaritan House because of the corporal works of mercy. We also give to help feed the soul. For both of us charity started early on. Growing up in Ohio, Tim learned to give to God first. In New Jersey, I remember collecting food from grocery stores to give to local shelters. After Tim and I met at Franciscan University and married, we committed to teaching our four children the same sense of duty to others. We look for two criteria when giving—culturally relevant organizations with phenomenal leadership. And Catholic Charities fits the bill. No matter what, each person has a capacity to give. And if we put ourselves in service to Christ in a small way, then God can work miracles through us.” – Tim and Martha Reichert

“We’ve been giving to Catholic Charities for more than 20 years. Its many ministries serve in a way that aligns with our deep Catholic faith. Years ago, as a young married couple, we volunteered by serving lunch to the homeless in downtown Denver. That experience encouraged us to volunteer more and moved us to give to others who are less fortunate. We donate to help protect and respect life, at all ages and stages. We give our time and talent to Catholic Charities and the Church through volunteer and leadership positions, including helping the women who walk through their doors seeking help. By caring for others, we serve God and open up new possibilities.” – Brooke and Bill Leer

“We’re passionate about giving our time to teach others to file their taxes. For years we’ve led tax preparation classes at Centro San Juan Diego and helped hundreds in the Hispanic community. After we both retired from careers at Lockheed Martin, we looked for ways to give back. We took an opportunity to volunteer at Centro. They embraced us like we’re family. We feel like we belong to Centro and are a part of its mission to enrich the lives of Hispanics in Denver. We were honored for giving our time and treasure to Centro. We received the Archbishop Jose H. Gomez Social Justice Leadership Award in 2014. But we’ve received far more than we’ve given. Our hearts have expanded from the joy of giving. When we share our gifts, we receive so much more in return. Centro is a gift to us.” – Kathy and Dave Martz

ARCHBISHOP’S CATHOLIC APPEAL — EST. 1965 —
Archbishop Aquila asks us to support the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal so the various ministries of the greater Church have the funding to serve those in need. Financial contributions made to the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal are allocated to nearly forty archdiocesan ministries which, in turn, bring others to experience the compassionate embrace of Jesus Christ.
“Giving isn’t simply a way of life, it’s the purpose of life. I travel to parishes across the country to encourage stewardship and serve as chairman of the board of the International Catholic Stewardship Council. God puts in us the need to love, and we show love by giving. I didn’t always believe this. As a young boy in Tucson, I heard about the importance of giving – yet I struggled to give a $10 bill to a missionary from Africa. My hand wouldn’t let go! Then I became a Benedictine monk and gave it all away. I learned that even with little means, it’s important to give to the Church. That’s why I give yearly from my own salary as pastor of St. Vincent De Paul Parish to the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal. I give half to the Church and half to other Catholic ministries. The very purpose of my being here is the need to give, which fulfills my need to love and serve in this world and the next.” - Father Andrew Kemberling, V.F.

THE CATHOLIC FOUNDATION OF NORTHERN COLORADO — EST. 1998 —
The Catholic Foundation was created as a framework to receive current and deferred gifts and establish endowments for Catholic entities. It provides for the long-term financial support of parishes, schools and ministries. The Foundation was established to carefully steward the treasures of the Church. Leaving a bequest or estate gift through The Catholic Foundation provides a layer of separation, giving legal protection to the funds and allowing for additional accountability of the money gifted. In gratitude, The Foundation includes donors who plan a gift to the Church in its Holy Family Legacy Society. Donors may also establish a Donor Advised Fund allowing them to invest in their faith. The Foundation provides peace of mind that all its funds will be managed and multiplied in a professional and morally-responsible way.
“We’re proud parents of four children and are blessed with 11 grandchildren. In addition, we’ve welcomed a fifth child into our family. This child we call the Church. We pour as much time, love and financial support into our fifth as our other children. We entrust The Catholic Foundation with our donations, knowing our wishes will be honored. It wasn’t always easy for us to give. We once had careers in nursing and the telecom industry, plus we were raising a family. But our faith grew over time, and we saw the needs of our community. We graduated from the Denver Catholic Biblical School and became more active at St. Thomas More Parish. We started to live for God alone and shared our blessings with others. God cannot be outdone in generosity—that’s something we learned. Over time, we’ve seen our giving grow and our faith grow. Jesus and Our Lady have always taken care of us.” – Colleen and Paul Lum Lung
