Young mom’s fears overcome at Marisol Health

Denisa’s first appointment at Marisol Health was not how she imagined it. As a nurse moved the ultrasound wand over her pregnant belly, she held a phone close to the sound of the baby’s beating heart. Listening on the other end was Denisa’s incarcerated fiancé. “The feds picked him up less than two weeks before, and I went in to my first appointment without him,” said the 28-year-old mother. “I told them my concerns, but (the medical staff) was very comforting. After their words of encouragement and saying he could hear the heartbeat—it made me feel comfortable.” Marisol Health, a network of medical clinics run by Catholic Charities of Denver, heard Denisa’s angst. The father of her child faced felony charges. She had an 8-year-old son, no health insurance and a high school education. Having had three abortions, and several miscarriages, Denisa worried she couldn’t have a healthy baby. “I thought maybe I had messed my body up, and I wanted to see if I could get excited or not excited– if the baby was okay,” she shared a month before her due date.

She wanted to turn to Planned Parenthood. “Planned Parenthood was my favorite place to run to,” she said. “That’s mostly the reason why I’ve done abortions in the past, out of fear, out of being a single mom and struggling.” She saw Marisol Health’s location listed on a Google search. Marisol Health is located right across the street from Planned Parenthood. Denisa decided to go to Marisol Health for an ultrasound. She felt emotional during the appointment. “If God gave me one more chance to have this baby, I’ve got to have it,” she said. “It’s not the way I pictured it, but it could be worse.”

The compassionate staff at Marisol Health helped her make a plan. They scheduled her appointments, gave her donated clothing and suggested resources to help during her pregnancy, and after. She now takes classes at Community College of Aurora and works part-time while awaiting the birth of her child. “When I go in, I feel like I’m the only person there,” Denisa said. “If I have a bad day, I go to talk to someone. I get plenty of support. … I’m really proud of myself. I got over my fear.”
In 2017, Marisol Health served 821 clients, 70 percent of whom earn less than $30,000. Our approach of mercy and compassion encourages trusted relationships to form — and to heal wounds caused by trauma.
Archdiocesan Housing provides affordable, serviceenriched housing for individuals and families who cannot access decent housing in the broader marketplace. We believe all persons deserve to be treated with dignity. We strive to offer our residents housing where they can feel valued, offer their talents and have a sense of home and self-worth. In addition, we provide supportive services and enrichment activities that assist our residents in maintaining independence according to the circumstances of their lives.

TAX CREDIT OPTIONS FOR DONORS
One donation, double the benefits This year, donors have access to more tax credits when giving to Catholic Charities, so helping those in need can be a doubly rewarding experience. The new Samaritan House Women’s Shelter, which opened in September, and Marisol Homes, which opened a new location, qualify for tax credits in addition to other Catholic Charities shelters and child care center locations. When a donation is made to these ministries under the Enterprise Zone or Child Care Tax Credit, Colorado donors can receive a tax credit they can use on their Colorado state income taxes. “It’s a win-win situation because the donation goes further to help those in need and the donor has an after-tax lower cost of donation, even though they gave more,” said Wayne Wolberg, chief financial officer for Catholic Charities of Denver. “We have many donors that are contributing through the enterprise zone and child care tax credits.”
Child Care Tax Credit This credit seeks to increase the quality and availability of child care in metro Denver. The state of Colorado allows a 50 percent tax credit on state income taxes when a donation is made to these ministries: - Marisol Homes in Lakewood - $300 minimum donation - Catholic Charities’ Early Childhood Education programs – $300 minimum

GUADALUPE APARTMENTS IS LIKE ‘A HOME WITH A COACH’ Ribbon cutting held for Weld County’s largest Permanent Supportive Housing complex in Greeley
Catholic Charities of Denver, local officials and partners celebrated the opening of Guadalupe Apartments, Weld County’s first large-scale, Permanent Supportive Housing complex in Greeley, designed to give low-income families and those experiencing homelessness a path to housing stability. “Guadalupe Apartments is like a home with a coach,” said Justin Raddatz, executive director of Archdiocesan Housing. “Not only does each resident receive a beautiful, furnished apartment to call home, but also has on-site access to an array of supportive services to help them overcome any challenge they are facing toward achieving their life’s goals.” Some 125 guests, including local affordable housing leaders, stakeholders and government officials attended the grand opening event on October 27 at 1520 N. 11th Ave. in Greeley, marking Archdiocesan Housing’s completion of the $13.5 million project and collaboration with organizations to make it a reality. Guadalupe Apartments is one of Archdiocesan Housing’s 29 affordable housing properties that offer a combined 1,719 rental units and serve more than 3,100 residents.

Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila of the Archdiocese of Denver blessed the complex and spoke about the importance of residents’ dignity. Catholic Charities President and CEO Larry Smith thanked all the contributors, as well as the officials who gave remarks before a ceremonial ribbon cutting and reception. Guadalupe Apartments has leased its 47 studio, 1- and 2-bedroom units, designed to provide formerly homeless households with a more stable and productive life. Resident Christopher Llamas was one of the first residents to move in to the complex. “It’s the best apartment complex in Greeley,” said the 26-year-old, who experienced homelessness because of a brain injury. “I would recommend it. I’m enjoying every moment.”

10,000 Huggies delivered to diaper bank Healthcare company donates to help needy families

More bottoms will be covered with Huggies diapers after healthcare services company Vizient donated 10,000 diapers to the Bottom Line Diaper Bank in Denver.
“These babies are our future,” said Nhung Nielsen, a Bottom Line Diaper Bank volunteer. “We don’t want mothers to be embarrassed that they can’t afford diapers.”
The diaper bank, operated by Catholic Charities of Denver, provides some 350,000 diapers a year to low-income families for their infants and toddlers. Staff and volunteers unloaded a truck in September carrying 10,000 of the Huggies diapers after Vizient’s Clinical Connections Summit was held in downtown Denver. The donations were delivered to All Saints Parish in Denver where diapers are stored.
The diaper bank does not ask for proof of income or other information. Families and individual recipients of all backgrounds and creeds are served.
“Vizient and Huggies were great to work with. We were very appreciative of their donation,” said Kathryn Nygaard, Bottom Line Diaper Bank liaison for Catholic Charities of Denver.
The diaper bank needs to collect about 500,000 diapers for low-income families a year. For more information, visit ccdenver.org/diaper.
Donations and diapers are provided throughout the year to the diaper bank, which helps to supply diapers to Gabriel House, a network of 12 parishes and volunteers that give much-needed supplies to mothers and families with young children.
“We serve all families,” Nygaard said. “We see a lot of immigrants and refugees. We’d love to partner with more businesses to provide diapers.”

DENVER’S LARGEST WOMEN’S-ONLY SHELTER OPENS

Catholic Charities opened Samaritan House Women’s Shelter in northeast Denver to serve vulnerable single women experiencing homelessness—making it the largest women’s-only shelter in Denver. With support from the City and County of Denver, Catholic Charities renovated a 32,000 square-foot building that began offering emergency overnight services in September for up to 100 single women. An additional 50 women will have access to an on-site 29-day, non-medical recovery program with services intended to help them on the path to stability. This new facility, in combination with women’s shelter space at Samaritan House shelter in downtown Denver, enables Catholic Charities to provide shelter for up to 273 single women each night. “Catholic Charities is charting a new course in caring for women experiencing homelessness by offering a continuum of care that can transform their lives,” Smith said. “To serve single women who are homeless, we must first give them shelter to protect them from harm on the streets, then be creative in helping them chart a path to stability. Our mission is to serve others with the love, mercy and compassion of Jesus Christ.” In the Denver metro region, there were 1,722 homeless women (or 33.7 percent of the total homeless) on any given night in January, according to the 2017 Point-In-Time report from the Metro Denver Homeless Initiative. The administrative offices of Catholic Charities are co-located with the shelter.
