Thank you for your participation in our continued Magnet journey. Because you are Magnet nurses, you are recognized as among the best in the nursing field. Thank you to the interprofessional team for your hard work and support and working collaboratively to make our Kenmore Mercy Hospital team innovative and dynamic. I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
2 West Nurse Receives DAISY Award Kenmore Mercy Hospital honored Kayla Limardi, BSN, MSN, RN, from 2 West, with the DAISY Award in December. The nomination praised Kayla for her professionalism and compassion shown to a patient and his family. “In short, she is a blessing sent from God to our entire family. From the moment she walked into the room we trusted her,” said David, the patient’s son. He went on to share how Kayla walked them through every step as the family had to choose to initiate strictly comfort measures for their dying father. “We will remember her and speak so highly of her and Kenmore Mercy for the rest of our lives,” added David. Kayla’s award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the extraordinary efforts nurses perform every day.
May this season fill your home with joy, your heart with love, and your life with laughter.
New Niagara University Cohort Announced
Thinking warmly of each of you, I wish your family an extra measure of comfort, joy and hope this special season and throughout the New Year.
After a rigorous application and interview process, the new cohort for the Catholic Health/Niagara University “RN to BSN” program has been decided. Kenmore Mercy has four nurses pursuing their Bachelor of Nursing degree. Congratulations and good luck to Bobby Gross, RN - 3 West, Amanda Kowalski, RN - Emergency Department, Kelly Martin, RN - 3 East, and Jessica Schulte, RN - 2 West (IT)!
With kindest regards and gratefulness to you, Cheryl W. Hayes, MS, ANP, NEA-BC Vice President of Patient Care Services
Catholic Health covers the cost of tuition and books, and provides a laptop computer for each nurse enrolled in the program. In exchange, the nurses agree to remain employed within Catholic Health for three years after earning their bachelors’ degrees. Thank you to all of our nurses who are working to obtain advanced degrees. Their work demonstrates commitment and advancement in nursing.

Kayla Limardi, BSN, RN - 2 West, completed her Master’s in Family Nurse Practitioner from D’Youville College. Physicians at Kenmore Mercy Hospital chose Scott Berube, RN, CCRN, from the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, to receive the hospital’s Annual Medical Staff Associate of the Year Award for 2017.
The hospital’s target was 77 percent for October 2016 through September 2017, which was easily achieved with scores ranging from the high 70s to mid 80s. However a downward trend was noted during the summer months with scores well below target. Patient experience is impacted by every department in the hospital therefore each department has the opportunity to help get our scores back up to where we know we can be. Unit-specific scores are available on each individual unit and are broken down by question. This allows us to see what area needs the most improvement. Take a look at your unit’s scores; where is there room for improvement within your unit? Could this be turned into a unit based council project?

Foundaton Supports Nursing Through Grants Each year the Kenmore Mercy Foundation reserves funds for staff looking to enhance their education. This includes, but is not limited to, national conferences, certifications, and classes. In 2017 the Foundation provided over $45,000 to over 100 nursing associates for educational opportunities they either personally requested to attend or were asked to attend by a manager. If you are looking to enhance your nursing education in 2018, speak with your manager for details. Thank you to the Kenmore Mercy Foundation for their ongoing support of nursing.

Online Services Starts #SmallThanks Campaign
Pyxis Upgrade Coming Soon
If you follow Kenmore Mercy or Catholic Health’s Facebook pages, you have likely see our new #SmallThanks Campaign that utilizes positive, 5-star Google reviews.
From February 12 - 22, 2018, a new enhanced Pyxis Operating system will be deployed to all of the clinical areas.
Google allows businesses to upload pre-selected portions of the positive review and create a poster featuring the comments. We have been using this tool as a way to highlight our associates and give thanks for all they do. Some of the recent reviews that have been posted included comments about the Emergency Department, Surgery, and 2 East.
The screen will have a very different look, but more importantly, the functionality will allow for more efficient and safe medication dispensing-related decisions. There are approximately ten NetLearning sessions, two to four minues each, which all nurses who use the Pyxis system are required to complete. This patient review also celebrates many of the amazing Kenmore Mercy Hospital associates in the ER for their kindness and excellent care.
Let Your Voice Be Heard This January Associate perception and engagement are high priorities for Catholic Health and Kenmore Mercy. Getting Prepared for The Joint Commission
Hospital Tradition Helps Families in Need Taking care of others is something the associates at Kenmore Mercy Hospital do naturally, including when it comes to feeding others in need.
We can expect an unannounced survey visit from The Joint Commission at any time. In fact, our Quality & Patient Safety Department is projecting a visit as early as January 18.
Individuals from various disciplines, including Kristen Williamson, PA and Esther Sprehe, NP (shown above) came together to help distribute their donations of turkeys and all the trimmings to 55 families in the Ken-Ton area.
Every hospital associate, at every level, is responsible for upholding the hospital’s mission and providing excellent patient care. Joint Commission surveyors may speak with anyone about their contribution to the hospital’s overall goals and about their individual jobs.
What should I do if a surveyor asks me a question? • Listen and stay calm. • Think carefully before answering a question. • Only answer the question asked by the surveyor. You do not need to elaborate. • If you don’t understand a question, ask for clarification. • Whenever possible, mention our practices and procedures that support your answers. • Show enthusiasm and interest! • Show off your successes and the things you know and do well. • Exhibit pride in your department.
Please be familiar with the National Patient Safety Goals examples, including 1. Use two patient identifiers 2. Improve communication (Monitoring of Critical Value Reporting) 3. Improving the Safety of Medications: (Automated Heparin Protocol) 4. Clinical Alarm Safety (Evaluation of alarm parameters) 5. Reduce Healthcare Associated Infections (antibiotic stewardship program, Decrease CAUTI, CLABSI, etc.) 6. Reduce risk of falls 7. Reduce risk of Suicide (Suicide drills, one on one observation, suicide prevention kits 8. Universal Protocol l (time outs required in all invasive procedure areas)

Thanks to all of our associates for continuing to live our mission through this long-running Thanksgiving tradition.
Mock Codes Educates Nurses Throughout the month of October the nurse educators provided mock code education to all of the nurses on the inpatient unit. This was a hands-on approach to educate nurses on appropriate recognition of a code scenario, review BLS, and educate nurses on the necessary steps to complete prior to the code teams arrival. Nurses had the opportunity to identify a patient in cardiopulmonary arrest, demonstrate activation of the code team, describe the nurses role in a code scenario, identify appropriate tools utilized during code, and demonstrate skills such as; effective and quality compressions, setting up the suction machine, placement of defibrillator pads, and airway management. Thank you to all of the nurses who participated, a lot of positive feedback was received and there will be more code education in the future.
Christmas Shoppe Helps Those in Need A big thank you to everyone for their support of Kenmore Mercy’s inauguarl Christmas Shoppe Program which will help bring a little joy to at least 40 families and 103 kids this Christmas. The morning of December 16, hospital associates and committee members hosted a shop-like environment where fifteen families were able to pick up much needed pajamas, underwear, socks, and other items such as hygiene products and a $10 gift card to Walmart or Target. Additionally, we were able to create bundles for another two dozen families who were unable to attend (due to weather, work, etc) to pick up from Ken-Ton FamilyCare when they are able. Because of extra donations that were provided by our units and departments, Ken-Ton FamilyCare also has a wonderful inventory of items to provide to additional families and children at their discretion during patient visits.
