Summer 2018
A Message from Susan Jandzinski, Executive Director It is hard to believe we are already half way through 2018 and summer is in full swing. This year has been a busy one already. In April, we made the final payment on our $1.2 million commitment for the Emergency Department. In May, we dedicated the newly engraved bricks and blocks in the John M. Repetski Healing Garden, and in June we held our annual golf event where golfers enjoyed a beautiful day at Legends on the Niagara golf course, all while supporting Kenmore Mercy Foundation. We are beginning to plan for our upcoming A Tribute to Angels event which will take place on Friday, November 16 at Salvatore’s Italian Gardens. Additional information will be forthcoming. So watch your mailbox and emails! This time of year, also kicks off our Annual Fund season. In the next few months, our friends, associates, physicians and local businesses will be asked to financially support Kenmore Mercy Hospital by making a donation to the Foundation. I would like to thank you in advance for making that commitment to our patients and our community. It is because of donors like you that we are able to support projects and programs along with purchase state of the art equipment to better serve our patients. Thank you for your generous and thoughtful support of Kenmore Mercy Foundation and Kenmore Mercy Hospital.

Ninth Leapfrog “A” Achieved Kenmore Mercy Hospital has maintained its “A” rating from The Leapfrog Group’s bi-annual Hospital Safety Grade Report for Spring 2018. This is the hospital’s ninth consecutive “A” since 2014. It is also the only hospital in New York State to earn nine consecutive “A” ratings. The Safety Grade assigns an “A, B, C, D or F” grade to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms among patients in their care. Over the years, the Kenmore Mercy Foundation has been fortunate to receive generous gifts from former patients, friends, physicians and associates of Kenmore Mercy Hospital. Many of those gifts were designated in the individuals last will and testament and part of their estate planning. In December 2015, the Foundation received a generous donation from a former patient who lived ten minutes from the hospital. The gentleman chose Kenmore Mercy because of the care he and his family received many years ago. In 2016, Kenmore Mercy Foundation established a legacy society for those that wish to leave a lasting gift to Kenmore Mercy Hospital. Named in honor of Sister Mary Mechtilde O’Connor, a Sister of Mercy and the first administrator of Kenmore Mercy Hospital, the Sister Mary Mechtilde Legacy Society recognizes those individuals who, through a bequest, life insurance policy, or another estate planned gift, make a legacy commitment to Kenmore Mercy Hospital. By joining the Sister Mechtilde Legacy Society, you will personally support our mission by providing vital support for our charitable projects. You will influence the well-being of others today, tomorrow, and years to come. Members of the Sister Mary Mechtilde Legacy Society enjoy: • Prominent listing in a variety of donor recognition opportunities • A personalized certificate of membership signed by the CEO and Board President

“Stop the Bleed” Kits Provided by Foundation Kenmore Mercy’s Emergency Department registered nurses are partnering with the Town of Tonawanda Paramedics to provide hands on “Stop the Bleed” training in the hospital, throughout the community, and eventually into local schools. The program was designed to help prepare anyone to act as an immediate responder for a massive bleeding event from any cause, but particularly from an active shooter or explosive event, where response is delayed. It is intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. Thanks to the Kenmore Mercy Foundation, the Emergency Department was able to purchase three kits (valued at $950 each), containing lifesaving bleeding control equipment such as tourniquets, pressure dressings and gauze bandages and puts them into the hands of the public to help control bleeding and save lives. Training includes an educational and hands on exercise where individuals are taught how to pack wounds, apply pressure and use commercial tourniquets. Massive bleeding from any cause, but particularly from an active shooter or explosive event where a response is delayed can result in death within five to ten minutes.
