A Message from Susan Jandzinski, Executive Director

Foundation Golf Event on the Move

Let’s start by saying THANK YOU! Thank you for your generous and thoughtful support of Kenmore Mercy Foundation and Kenmore Mercy Hospital. Each and every donation enables the Foundation to support projects and programs, and purchase state of the art equipment to better serve our patients. We had an amazing year! We started 2018 with the dedication of the memorial bricks in the John M. Repetski Healing Garden, followed by our annual golf tournament, and finally, our A Tribute to Angels event. During each of these events, we met new friends, reminisced with old friends and got to know the people who support Kenmore Mercy Foundation and find Kenmore Mercy Hospital “a special and caring place.” We received generous gifts at the end of 2018 from the Kenmore Mercy Medical Staff, Kenmore Mercy Auxiliary, the Debra Bille and Robert Bille Trust, Kenneth L. & Katherine G. Koessler Family Foundation, Inc., and Paul and Helen Ellis Trust. We have exciting plans for 2019, so enjoy this recap of the wonderful things that happened in 2018 and what’s in store for 2019.

Event co-chairs, Michael Gough, MD, Daniel Paolini, and Nicholas Salvatore are excited to share this change and recommend booking a foursome early as space is limited. This event includes an 18-hole golf tournament with on course tastings and contests, and player give-a-ways. This year’s silent auction will include mobile bidding, allowing golfers to bid while they wait to tee off. The event will conclude with a sit down dinner, raffle and awards presentation. Park Country Club’s golf course was the site of the 1934 PGA Championship and was designed by the international firm of Colt and Allison, known for famous courses like Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland and Swinley Forest near London, UK. Family Waiting Areas on 2 East & 3 East The Anthony V. Mannino Foundation and Harris Beach, PPLC, provided an $8,000 gift to Kenmore Mercy Foundation in 2017 to assist in the upgrade of waiting rooms on both the 2 East and 3 East Patient Care Units. Anthony V. Mannino passed away in March 2009 after a 22 month battle with esophageal cancer.

Medical staff members Dr. D. Michael Slate and Dr. Joseph Ralabate, presented the check to Mark Keller, president of the Kenmore Mercy Foundation Board of Trustees and Walt Ludwig, hospital president & CEO.

Thank You to Our Major Donors December was a special month for the Kenmore Mercy Foundation, which received large donations from the Kenmore Mercy Auxiliary and the hospital’s medical staff. The Auxiliary donation of $48,000 will be used by the Foundation to purchase new equipment, support associate training, and help patients in need. This donation represents funds raised from the Willow Tree Gift Shop, and atrium sales, along with proceeds from the sewing group. The medical staff’s donation of $30,000 will assist the Foundation in supporting associate educational opportunities. Kenmore Mercy Foundation sets aside funds annually to help provide associates with the means to learn up-to-date techniques, while providing the resources to treat patients with the high quality care for which Kenmore Mercy Hospital is recognized. “We are very grateful to the Kenmore Mercy medical staff and the Auxiliary for donating funds to assist the Foundation in supporting educational opportunities for our association to enhance their skills,” said Susan Jandzinski, executive director of the Kenmore Mercy Foundation.

Although Anthony was not a patient at Kenmore Mercy, his mother and Harris Beach wanted to provide a meaningful and comfortable area for patients and families. The goal was to create a space that “encourages the giving and receiving of essential emotional support and care to patients and their families,” said Cindy Mannino, mother of Anthony and president of the Anthony V. Mannino Foundation.

Lab Coats Add To Patient Experience

Lawley Gift Helps with Magnet Education

Heather Telford, Elaine Schrutt, Amber Mazurek, and Kristen Parisi in Denver. Appearance makes a difference. It creates a feeling of confidence and respect. In a hospital setting, that first impression becomes an important part of the patient experience. For our nurse leaders who are at the forefront of creating positive workplace cultures, they set their first impression by wearing white lab coats. In fact, studies have shown their patients prefer seeing a clinician in a white coat, noting that it make them seem more “knowledgeable, trustworthy, caring, and approachable.” The Kenmore Mercy Foundation recently made it possible for all our nurse leaders to receive a white lab coat on which they proudly wear Magnet patches. The white lab coat is a symbol of the trust that society places in these nurse leaders, an emblem of their expertise, and a sign of the critical relationship between them, their patients and their nursing staff. The white coat is a representation of their professional responsibility in the healthcare professions.

Serenity Room Update In 2013, Kenmore Mercy Hospital dedicated a room on the fifth floor (room 5020) as a Serenity Room. The room was designed as a relaxing and tranquil space for our associates and physicians. In December 2018, the room had a much needed face lift with new furniture and amenities for associates and physicians to use to “recharge” when necessary. The quiet, restful space includes comfortable furniture, soothing music, inspirational books and messages, and meditative tools.

In 2018, Kenmore Mercy Foundation received a $5,000 gift from Lawley to ensure additional Magnet education for Kenmore Mercy Hospital’s nurses. In October, four members of our nursing leadership team had the opportunity to attend the Magnet Conference in Denver, Colorado. Heather Telford, MS, RN, CEN, director of nursing; Amber Mazurek, nurse manager, BSN, RN, OCN; Elaine Schrutt, BSN, RN, NEA-BC, 3 East nurse manager; and Kristen Parisi, BSN, RN, CCRN, attended the threeday information-filled conference. There were over 10,000 nurses in attendance at the conference from around the world. The Kenmore Mercy Hospital team was able to bring back best practice initiatives in support of our Magnet designation. Kenmore Mercy Hospital is the only hospital in WNY with this designation. The Magnet Recognition Program salutes health care organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. Developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), Magnet is the leading source of successful nursing practices and strategies worldwide.
