Children’s Books Books
Books are always a wonderful gift item, and there are thousands of excellent Catholic books to choose from. One classic that has been helping Catholic celebrate Advent and Christmas for years is Advent and Christmas with Fulton Sheen. This book contains reflections and prayers for each day of Advent, as well as the Twelve Days of Christmas. Similarly, EWTN’s Advent Reflections includes reflections based on the Advent readings, written by various priests and bishops. Rejoicing in our Hope, by Bishop Robert Baker includes stories and reflections based on Scripture, the saints, and others, for both the seasons of Advent and Christmas. Scott Hahn has been enlightening Catholics and non-Catholics alike about our faith for decades. His book Joy to the World opens up the Christmas story with insight and context you may have never before considered.
For a beautiful way to celebrate Advent, by reflecting on the Scriptures and God’s work in the Old Testament preparing His people for the coming of the Savior, having a Jesse Tree is a wonderful tradition. The Jesse Tree book will lead your whole family in this powerful devotion. It can also be purchased with a set of Jesse Tree ornaments. Similarly, Gregory Kenneth Cameron’s An Advent Book of Days provides daily reflections and artwork focused on the “characters of Christmas,” such as Gabriel, the Magi, Mary, and Joseph. Finally, 5-Minute Prayers around the Advent Wreath offers an easy opportunity for daily Scripture and reflections that will help families prepare for Christmas.
One exciting book that would make an excellent Christmas gift is CatholicBrain’s Catholic Bible Storybook. With 52 Bible stories, beautifully illustrated, this children’s Bible helps children see the Biblical basis of our faith by connecting the Old Testament to the New Testament to the teachings and practice of our Catholic faith. Along with the Bible, this can be purchased with a coloring book and interactive app, which includes numerous animated Bible videos.
Among other wonderful children’s book options is The Christmas Elephant, a cute picture-book for younger children. Jesus and the Miracle of the Mass is a beautifully-illustrated book that will help children and adults alike understand the Mass and fall in love with Jesus in the Eucharist. My First Interactive Mass Book is a board book that can be brought to Mass so even very young children can participate. Raymond Arroyo’s The Spider who Saved Christmas, about a spider whose web protected the Holy Family from the hunting eyes of Herod’s soldiers has become a fast classic, and has been followed up with Arroyo’s The Wise Men who Found Christmas. Father Donald Calloway’s The Chaste Heart of St. Joseph is a graphic novel that will greatly appeal to older children with an inspiring look at the man chosen to raise the Son of God. For a unique approach, Adventure Catechism’s Electronic Catechism Reader takes children through aspects of the Catechism with Brother Francis. They follow along with the text and lovely illustrations in this electronic book while Brother Francis reads aloud to them. The classic Little Catholics Series is a fivevolume book set that introduces children to elements of our faith such as the Creed, Commandments, prayers, and more.
Advent Calendars
For many of us, Advent means Advent calendars. EWTN’s religious catalogue offers a variety of devotional options, including the Manger Scene Free-Standing Calendar, the traditional Guiding Star Advent Calendar, and for chocolate lovers, the In the Manger Chocolate Advent Calendar, among others.
Outside of Advent, Catholics can follow the calendar, immersed in our faith with the 2025 Mary and the Saints wall calendar or the 2025 Life of Our Lord wall calendar.
Children’s Gifts
Parents, grandparents, friends; we all like finding good Christmas gifts for children that they will enjoy and that nurture their Catholic faith. There are many wonderful options, including those below. For young kids is the Pray and Play ABC Puzzle. This puzzle is designed to help children learn the alphabet while developing their motor skills, and the puzzle pieces include information about saints that parents can share with their children. A good Advent gift to help children prepare for Christmas is the Giving Manger Gift Set. Each day, children can add straw to the little wooden manger whenever they perform a loving act, preparing a comfortable bed in which to place the Baby Jesus on Christmas. The set comes with a book and Baby Jesus figure, and has become a cherished
tradition for many families. The Saintly Heart Nativity Playset gives children an opportunity to get hands-on at the manger with wooden pieces of Mary, Joseph, animals and the Baby Jesus. The Catholic Company also has a plastic Nativity Play Set children will enjoy. A play Mass kit is an essential tool for any future priest. The Children’s Play Mass Kit, found on Etsy, is handmade from wood to withstand occasional fumbling hands.
There are also gifts that children can cuddle with at night. Personalized saint pillows allow children to sleep comfortably with their patrons. They can also be reminded of the saints through saint-themed pillow cases, as well as huggable Mary, Jesus, and saint plush dolls. To help children learn their prayers and feel comfortable at night is the Louie the Lamb prayer buddy. This cuddly lamb recites the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be when squeezed. For play, the Shining Light dolls are sturdily made of plastic and come with informational cards about the saints. Finally, many Catholics have heard of the Elf on the Shelf, but what about the Shepherd on the Search? This fun Advent activity includes a book and stuffed shepherd that can travel throughout the house in his search for the Christ-child as he makes his way toward your manger scene.
Games
For older children or fun for the whole family, there are a variety of Catholic games. Road to Bethlehem is a Bible-themed strategy adventure game, exciting for players aged 8 to adult. Although the game takes a few hours to complete, it can be easily stopped and resumed at a later time. Divinity is a board game based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This game, which has been granted an imprimatur, is a fun teaching tool for players aged 8 to adult. Redemption is a collectible trading card game that features adventures from the Bible and allows players to rescue lost souls and overcome evil adversaries. This addictive card game has starter packs and booster packs. The game has achieved so much popularity that Redemption tournaments have sprung up across the country. Alleluia is a card game that teaches children as young as four the symbols of our Catholic faith, but is fun for the whole family. Finally, The Catholic Card Game is a party game for groups of all ages. This game offers wholesome gameplay with laughter and fun that is perfect for youth nights, family game night, or just a party for adults or children. It can be purchased together with the company’s Mafia-style Council at Daybreak.
Food
For foodies or those who prefer consumable gifts, there are many Catholic options. One of the most popular is the Trappist Preserves, from St. Joseph Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, which have been delighting Catholics since 1954. More recently, the Benedictine monks from Marmion Abbey, in Spencer, Illinois, have created numerous dips, hot sauces, and salsas through their Abbey Farms apostolate. For coffee lovers, Mystic Monk Coffee offers many varieties, including the seasonal Jingle Bell Java. The Catholic Coffee Company offers the St. Nicholas Christmas Blend, as well as many gift set options. Finally, for tea drinkers, EWTN offers Mother Angelica’s Specialty Tea breakfast blend.
Other Ideas / Stocking Stuffers
This gift guide is only scratching the surface of the many wonderful Catholic gift options. Many companies offer Catholic clothes items, from T-shirts to hoodies to beanies, and even socks. There is so much beautiful Catholic art available as well. For stocking stuffers, try sacramentals like holy cards, rosaries, scapulars, etc., that you can have blessed by a priest. (For men, consider Roman Catholic Man’s Combat Rosary.) The Wallet Rosary Card, by Everyday Prayer, is a credit card-sized pocket Rosary, with ten holes that can be used in place of rosary beads and has the convenience of always being in your pocket. For Advent and Christmas parties, Catholic Christmas Crackers are favors that look like New Year’s poppers. But inside, you will find a button with a prophecy fulfilled by Jesus, a Nativity medal, and more, including a “corny” joke sure to bring a unique form of humor to any get-together. Finally, a subscription to the enormously popular Hallow prayer app is an excellent gift for any Christian on your list.
Have a Blessed Advent and Merry Christmas!
In the Upper Room
“Is this heaven? No, it’s Iowa.” You might recognize this iconic line from Field of Dreams, one of the most successful baseball movies ever, filmed right here in Dyersville, Iowa. The film tells the story of a man who hears a voice urging him to build something extraordinary to honor his late father. So, what could the Field of Dreams and Upper Room, a Christian Gift Shop, possibly have in common?
While we wouldn’t go so far as to call Upper Room heaven, my husband, Deacon Doug, and I also felt a calling when we took over the gift shop that started in the upstairs of a vacuum store back in 2015. With a background in business management, I was excited by the chance to lead Upper Room—a place where we could openly express our faith while putting my skills to use. Taking over the shop in 2022 felt like a dream come true, and with the support of the previous owners, parishioners, friends, and family, we embarked on this new journey.
Our vision was straightforward: to preserve the same quality products and personal service while infusing our unique touches. We set out to create an environment that fully engages the senses, allowing our guests to feel truly immersed in the experience. The store is infused with seasonal fragrances, complemented by gentle background music, and we offer daily complimentary Catholic Coffee. We've carefully curated our merchandise in a boutique style, using color and textures to encourage customers to touch and experience everything firsthand.
Originally located upstairs with limited accessibility and foot traffic, we knew we had to move the shop to a more suitable location. We relocated downtown, just half a block from St. Francis Xavier Basilica and its elementary school. From there, things took off. We reorganized, sorted, and showcased our merchandise in new ways. By expanding our use of Square POS software, we could track sales, monitor customer return rates, and analyze items by category, average tickets, and customer flow. As a result, our business grew by 21% in 2023 and is on track for nearly 30% growth in 2024.
What truly sets us apart isn’t just the metrics—it’s the relationships we nurture with our customers. The line “Is this heaven?” resonates with us as well, not for a baseball field, but for the sense of community we strive to build at Upper Room. We are a team of three women that are practicing Catholics and intentional about accompanying each customer as they enter our space. From the moment they are greeted to the careful attention given to understanding their needs and caring for their purchases, we are deeply aware of our calling to engage with them on a personal level. While not everyone has the time or openness for a deeper connection, we ensure that at the very least, each visitor receives a warm, blessed encounter, where they can see the light of Christ in us.
Our journey with customers extends beyond their time in the shop. We support them through prayer, keeping their intentions close to our hearts even after they leave. In the center of the shop, we maintain a list of specific prayer requests on rolled paper, which is kept indefinitely. This prayer list is prayed over daily and is visible to passersby, serving as a reminder of how we can lift each other up in prayer. I recall a touching moment when a young boy, around seven years old, asked Marti, one of our associates, to pray with him over the list. Together, they unrolled the long list of requests and prayed the Our Father over the intentions, embodying the spirit of shared prayer that defines our mission.
It's quite common for visitors to tour the basilica and then stop by Upper Room afterward. Recently, one customer was deeply moved by her experience in the basilica and approached our associate, Rebecca, with a desire to learn about the rosary. She mentioned that she was visiting from out of state but felt compelled to understand more about the Catholic faith. She asked if she could pray the rosary even though she wasn’t Catholic and wanted to learn how to make the sign of the cross. Rebecca graciously taught her on the spot. The customer was deeply touched and coincidentally, so was Rebecca—it was an unforgettable moment.
We offer Memorial gifts and often find ourselves listening as grieving individuals open their hearts about their loss and the significance of their loved one. In those moments, we provide reassurance and hope in the promise of the afterlife.
There are also times when someone who has fallen away from the Church comes to us. Regardless of where they are on their faith journey, we meet them where they are and offer a safe space for them to share their thoughts and feelings. We take confidentiality seriously and hold their stories close to our hearts.
The way the Holy Spirit guides people to the shop continually fills us with awe and wonder at how God uses Upper Room as a pathway to Him. As I’ve been writing, I thought about how it’s probably a common experience that ministry takes a front seat in religious retail and I’m not saying anything that most owners haven’t already experienced. I thought about how our store probably isn’t anything special but that is simply not true. Each place in our type of business is as unique and as precious as the souls that cross our threshold. We must see it that way otherwise we are nothing more than another store selling trinkets. May God bless each of us in this very important ministry!

Pray On Paper: A Simple Way to Grow Closer to God
At Pray On Paper, our mission is simple: to help people pray and grow closer to God. In a world filled with distractions, we've created journals that bring prayer back to the basics—pen, paper, and a heart open to the Lord. Our products aren’t just journals; they are tools that offer the "gift of prayer" to those who use them.
The Examination Journal: Bring Your Joys and Struggles to the Lord Daily
The Examination Journal was born out of a personal need—a need to make the tradition and practice of the examen not just a concept, but a daily habit. After years of searching for the right tool, I realized that nothing existed quite like what I envisioned, so I created it. This journal distills the wisdom of saints like St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Francis De Sales, and St. Teresa of Avila into a simple, structured format that anyone can use.
One of our customers, Angela, describes it best: "The Examination Journal will exceed your expectations. The quality of the book itself is exceptional. It feels like something made back in the day, in the Old World where people cared deeply about quality. This book is a gem, and it will make a meaningful gift not only for yourself, but for anyone in your life who is seeking the face of the Lord."
For those seeking to deepen their spiritual life, the Examination Journal provides the structure and accountability needed. This journal has become a staple in many people's daily prayer routines, and Derek's experience echoes this: "I've struggled for years to incorporate a daily practice of examination into my spiritual life. This is the only resource I've found that is simultaneously simple, profound, and not time-consuming. The Examination Journal will be a staple in my daily prayer routine for sure!"
The Little Prayer Journal: Plant Seeds of Faith
Recognizing the need to nurture prayer in the hearts of the young, we created the Little Prayer Journal. Inspired by my own daughter’s struggles with prayer, this journal is designed to help children develop a daily habit of talking to God. It's more than just a diary; it's a tool that helps kids understand the profound simplicity of prayer and encourages them to make it a joyful part of their day. The Little Prayer Journal introduces children to various forms of prayer—giving thanks, asking for forgiveness, and praying for others—while also including carefully selected scripture verses to inspire and teach. Its durable design makes it a cherished possession that will withstand the test of time, making it a perfect gift for the Christmas season.
An Invitation to Share the Gift of Prayer
The Examination Journal and the Little Prayer Journal invite individuals of all ages into a deeper relationship with God. Each journal offers a meaningful way to build a habit of daily prayer or give that gift to their loved ones.
