WEAPONS OF MASS CONSTRUCTION Over 55 years ago, Fr. Justin Garvey, C.P. wrote from the Philippines that he had gone there to renew the faith in many mission parishes. He tried many things, but remarked that outside of the Mass and the Sacraments the rosaries sent by our members did more to restore the faith of those people than anything else. Personal and family prayer returned to the villages, and with that came faith and the practice of the Sacraments. Mission parish or not, bring your parish back to faith and practice of the Sacraments with the Rosary like Fr. Garvey. Our Lady’s Rosary Makers’ continued mission since 1949 is to spread devotion to the Rosary and provide the means to do this through rosary making.

Hope and Handicrafts from the Land of Jesus’ Birth The Holy Land Handicraft Cooperative Society Holy Land Handicraft Cooperative Society (HLHCS) was founded in 1981, and represents 35 workshops specializing largely in olivewood and mother-of-pearl. Many of these artisans are located in Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. As a World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) member, they sell products mainly through Fair Trade channels to customers all over the world. In addition to export sales and partnerships with distributors, they also sell products to tourists and pilgrims through a local Holy Land souvenir shop.

Making a difference in how business is done Fair Trade principles represent the cornerstone of the Cooperative’s philosophy and values. Fair Trade principles mandate that all artisans and producers are treated fairly, regardless of religion, race, or gender. For HLHCS, primarily, this signifies not favoring a particular workshop or its products simply because the artisans are Christian or Muslim. Working together to advertise, produce, and sell products helps them overcome endemic discrimination of this kind. Fair Trade also emphasizes the role of women within the workforce. In more traditional communities, women’s roles are typically focused in the domestic sphere, but economic pressures have created the need for more women to work in full participation with family businesses and beyond. Fair Trade ensures that their work is equally valid, respected, and fairly compensated.

One of the workshops that partners with the Cooperative focuses on training local special needs or handicapped people, who would not otherwise have opportunities for work, let alone for their personal artistic development, to make beautiful greeting cards and more. Unfortunately, sometimes people view the handicapped as a burden rather than as full and potentially productive members of society. Fair Trade encourages everyone to look beyond anyone’s limitations.

Making a difference in people’s lives Holy Land Handicraft Cooperative Society aims to preserve the olivewood craftsmanship traditions of the area - for the benefit of future generations. They strive to alleviate local poverty and unemployment, and allow generations of families to flourish, while still living in the land of their grandparents. Approximately 2,000 individuals benefit from the Cooperative’s activities. In addition to marketing handicrafts produced by the members, they also sell products produced by select non-member artisans, such as ceramics, glass, embroidery from many local women’s groups - or individual women - that include: olive soap, stationary made from recycled paper, candles, and recycled glass, and more. The pandemic lockdowns that began March 5, 2020, caused terrible consequences for the region, where tourism is a significant part of the economy. 85% of the economy depends on tourism, and often, access continues to be blocked or limited for tourists. The Covid-19 outbreak has pushed the local economy in the Holy Land to the breaking point. International consumers purchasing HLHCS products through their website or other distributors, can make a profound difference in people’s lives. Visit the Holy Land Handicraft Cooperative Society website at: www.hlhcs.org and consider purchasing items or making a donation as part of your Christmas plans this year! You can contact us at info@hlhcs.org.

21:20-23 Peter will ultimately make the supreme sacrifice, but what will become of the beloved disciple of whom the fourth Gospel often speaks (Jn 13:23; 19:26-27; 20:2-10; see Jn 1:3539; 18:15)? The first Christian generations still believed in the imminent return of Christ in glory (2 Thes 2), although they had not begun to experience the time of the Church. We no longer have the same preoccupation. However, the response made by Jesus still holds: what is important is to follow Christ faithfully. 21:24-25 The faith of believers is a grace, but it goes back in history to those who were witnesses: those who saw the deeds and understood their meaning. Nonetheless, the life of Jesus goes beyond everything that can be written or said about him, even in a Gospel. Opening or closing the sacred writing, we are brought back to the encounter with Christ himself.

Other spiritual aids such as Scripture, prayer, healing services, and the Mass can provide positive outlets enabling us to grieve. As Jesus’ disciples, we must be sensitive to those close to us and those in our world who suffer and grieve various losses. We can live our faith by extending to others the comfort we ourselves have received and be present to them as God is present to us.

Addiction.indd 1

Addiction, whether to alcohol, drugs, prescription medicine, pornography, technology, gambling, and even food, is a form of idolatry. The first commandment is, “You shall not have any other gods before Me.” When someone is addicted, they are really serving that addiction as their god. They become a slave to it, and it controls their life. Our faith calls us to put God at the center of our lives. In doing so, we can live freely. Addictions and addictive behavior come about due to an emptiness in our lives. Something is missing, and we seek to escape or to fill the hole through some unhealthy, repeated behavior. Some addictive behavior originates with our body’s chemistry; in those cases, we need the advice of a medical professional.

Jesus, I dislike having conflicts and disagreements because they bring me stress and unhappiness. When I have a disagreement with someone, help me to respond in truth and love. May my hurt feelings not get in the way of peacefully resolving the issue. Come, Holy Spirit and empower me to witness to the love of Jesus, and help me to advocate for myself with dignity. Amen.

Reflect upon a time when you were confronted by a friend or family member over something you did or failed to do. How did you respond? Were you defensive? Did you listen to the other party’s perspective? Did the person bring the issue to you in an honest, direct way? Was the conflict started by gossip or misinformation?

“We are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures; we are the sum of the Father’s love for us and our real capacity to become the image of his Son.”

Brainstorm some strategies for dealing with a conflict or a problem relationship. Who can help you mediate the situation and offer you some guidance through the disagreement? Consider what words you can use to heal the relationship.

Pope Benedict XVI “Each of us is the result of a thought of God. Each of us is willed, each of us is loved, each of us is necessary.”

Conflict.indd 4

dmitting that we have “missed the mark” and failed to love as Jesus calls us to can be humbling. No one likes to admit when they’re wrong, and some people choose to avoid taking responsibility saying: “it’s not that bad” or “other people have done worse.” Ignoring sin is never a good solution. Thankfully, Christ came to save sinners and He paid the price for sin by His death on the Cross. That’s the importance of the Cross. The punishment we deserve for disobeying God has been paid for by Jesus’ sacrifice. We encounter God’s love at our Baptism for even before we can respond in faith to God, He loves us and takes away original sin.

Hopelessness Even though I wander through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are at my side, with your rod and staff that comfort me.

r r r crisis

Jesus gave the Church the authority to forgive sins (John 20:21-22). When we confess our sin to a priest in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we encounter the mercy and forgiveness of God. Through the words of absolution, we can hear God’s forgiveness and assurance of His love through the priest. We may feel no different, but there is assurance of God’s forgiveness and we can begin anew. It always feels good to get sin off our chest and to experience a new beginning. It’s better to experience God’s grace than to talk about it.

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them can fall to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth far more than any number of sparrows.

Why it Matters to me...

What the Church says The heart of what the Church teaches about self-acceptance, confidence, and self-respect comes from our Baptism. When Jesus was baptized, He heard the words, “This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.” So too, the baptized Catholic is a beloved son or daughter of God. Our inherent dignity comes from God for we are created in the divine image and likeness. “God loves each of us as if there was only one of us” (St. Augustine).

Feeling sad or thinking that your situation is hopeless is a natural reaction to situations that cause emotional distress. There are varying degrees of sadness, but like other emotions, sadness is temporary and fades with time. Depression, however, is a long-term mental illness which impairs how we function. Sometimes it can be connected to an event such as our own serious illness or the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or a dream that does not materialize. Depression can also be traced to a chemical imbalance and should be treated by a professional. Since we are spiritual people, there is always a spiritual element or component to healing and becoming whole.

We meet God in the kindness of others who listen to us, in health professionals who are here to help us, through medical researchers who develop medications which help manage mental illness so people can function normally. God is close to all who call on Him.

esus shows us the way to love during His three-year public ministry. Jesus forgave; He taught; He engaged in discussion; and He spoke up for those who were oppressed. He often used parables to show us how to resolve conflicts for parables give us another perspective. We are called to do the same when we have a disagreement with someone. We may not change their mind, but we may save a relationship and have peace within ourselves when we act with dignity and respect.

Habit

At the end of the Gospel of Luke, Jesus experiences the Agony in the Garden, for He knows what torture lay before Him. He became so stressed that St. Luke, a physician, mentions that His sweat became like “drops of blood” (a medical condition called Hematohidrosis). During Jesus’ agony, He prays. In His experience of prayer, we are told that an “angel gave him strength.” We can experience being strengthened as well through our prayer; we can receive strength for the crosses we bear.

Disciples of Jesus will suffer loss and pain just like those who have no faith. The difference in the life of a disciple is that God is included in the healing process. The Church provides many paths to grieve which can allow those who grieve resources to express their pain. Time spent in front of the Blessed Sacrament is a valuable experience for it enables us to be quiet and just be with the Lord and allow our heart to touch the heart of God. Praying the Rosary allows us a view into the life of Jesus so we can pray the Sorrowful Mysteries and unite our sorrow and grief with His. In prayerfully following the Stations of the Cross we can unite our pain with His and with His Blessed Mother who quietly watched her beloved Son suffer such agony.

All things are lawful for me, but not all things are beneficial. All things are lawful for me, but I will not allow myself to be dominated by anything.

od always meets us where we are. We can be in a church or on the beach. We can be a Catholic who attends Mass or one who never attends. God is right there with us because that’s what God does, that’s what love does. In our suffering, in our confusion, in our thoughts of anxiety and isolation, God is present. Even when the pain becomes so real that we are tempted to think about taking our own lives, God is present.

21:15-19 In this touching dialogue, Christ makes Peter a sign of his own perennial presence with his followers as their Good Shepherd (see ch. 10). Catholic tradition has seen in this passage the fulfillment of the promise made at Caesarea Philippi: “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven” (Mt 16:17-19; see also Lk 22:31-32). The First Vatican Council made reference to vv. 15-17 in its definition that Jesus appointed Peter supreme shepherd and ruler over the whole flock.

Handing On the Faith “In catechesis ‘Christ, the Incarnate Word and Son of God, . . . is taught— everything else is taught with reference to him—and it is Christ alone who teaches— anyone else teaches to the extent that he is Christ’s spokesman, enabling Christ to teach with his lips. . . . Every catechist should be able to apply to himself the mysterious words of Jesus: “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me” ’” (CCC, no. 427). “Whoever is called ‘to teach Christ’ must first seek ‘the surpassing worth of know ing Christ Jesus’; he must suffer ‘the loss of all things. . .’ in order to ‘gain Christ and be found in him,’ and ‘to know him and the power of his resurrection, and [to] share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that if possible [he] may attain the resurrection from the dead’” (CCC, no. 428). “From this loving knowledge of Christ springs the desire to proclaim him, to ‘evangelize,’ and to lead others to the ‘yes’ of faith in Jesus Christ. But at the same time the need to know this faith bet ter makes itself felt” (CCC, no. 429).

‘It’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness’

Prayer for Compassion Lord, may my heart overflow with compassion, so I might emulate the sacrificial love You showed for all people in Your hour of suffering.

May those I encounter come to know You through the love I show to them in word and deed. Grant me a heart of understanding so that I might not judge others, but rather walk with them on the path You are guiding them along. And may I always strive to be an example of patience and forbearance, carrying compassion in my heart as a constant witness to Your merciful ways.

GIVING—and the way we ought to give: generously, completely, quietly, and with love, even when it is most difficult. Giving is at the core of human relationships and enriches the human experience. When it involves the gift of self, it brings joy to 650 the recipient and giver alike.

Christopher News Notes “LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS. We lift

them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.” Those words from the Mass reflect Jesus’ teaching that we can choose joy in our lives by lifting up our hearts to the God of love who created us. He asks us to purge ourselves of negative emotions which only serve to rob us of happiness. That doesn’t mean we won’t have crosses to bear, but it does mean that true joy can be found, even in the most 646 difficult of circumstances.
