Welcome! Dear Catholic Mothers, A new year, a new beginning. I don’t know where this planner finds you in 2020, but as the pages of the old planner filled with appointments, things to do and to organise we grew older, hopefully wiser, and have certainly changed from last year. As life flows bringing with it many adventures we are constantly asked to make new decisions, to take on new challenges, to embrace new situations, to accept things we cannot change… In this journey we are not alone, though it sometimes may not seem like it, WE ARE NOT ALONE. Jesus wants to walk with us so that we may live life and live it to the full (Jn 10:10), so that we may enter into every suffering of our life (whether big or small) and together with him come out victorious because Christ is risen and death has been destroyed and cannot hurt us anymore. With him we can rejoice and give glory to the Father for everything that we have; and as if this was not enough, at the foot of the cross he entrusted us to his mother! ‘Behold your Mother’ (Jn 19:27) he said, knowing that she would be the helper of every Christian, of every mother who like you and me needs to be supported and constantly brought to Christ as we stumble along our way. May the 2020 Catholic Mothers’ Planner accompany us and our families daily as we live our lives ever more in tune with the Church, never doubting her wisdom. May this little tool help us to enjoy the traditions of our faith more and more as we pass them on to our children, so that ‘none of them may be lost’ (Jn 18:9) and may it help us never to lose the focus on our ultimate destination: Heaven.

Did you know...? The word Novena comes from the Latin ‘Novem’ which means ‘nine’. The Novena is a prayer (or a set of prayers) recited for nine days for a specific intention and directed to a particular Saint asking for his or her intercession to win God’s favour. This type of prayer is called Novena of Petition. Preparation Novenas are prayed leading towards a big feast to help us get ready for the feast and set the heart and the spirit on it. Novenas of Mourning: are 9 days of Masses offered for the departed. There are also special Novenas for Indulgences like the Divine Mercy Novena.

Did you know...? The word “Carnival” originally comes from the Latin expression “carne vale”, which means “farewell to meat”, referring to the long Lenten season of fasting and abstinence. Carnival is strictly tied to the liturgical calendar and always ends on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. hrove Tuesday is also known as Fat Tuesday, because it marks the last day is the day before Ash Wednesday and therefore marks the last day of abundant and festive eating before the fasting begins brought by the Lenten season. Traditionally eggs and butter were associated with rich dishes and cakes and had to be consumed before the penitential season began. Making pancakes was the best way to ensure these ingredients would be used up before Ash Wednesday. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. The sshes come from the Palm Sunday of the previous year’s palms and are a clear sign of penance and a symbol of repentance and conversion.

Spiritual Challenge

Did you know?

During this Lent try to spend more time with the Scriptures.

St Jerome said that ‘Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ’

Lectio Divina is a wonderful way to come closer to the Word of God to ‘learn the heart of God through the words of God’ as Saint Gregory the Great says.

‘You erred, not knowing the Scriptures and not knowing the power of God. For if, as Paul says, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God, and if the man who does not know Scripture does not know the power and wisdom of God, then ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.’ - St Jerome

Choose a passage or a reading from the Bible, or simply use the gospel of the day. Before starting, pray that Holy Spirit may open your heart and ears to listen to what God wants to say to you, then follow these simple steps. • Reading (Lectio): Read the passage or reading two or three times. • Meditation (Meditatio): Meditate on what you have just read, note down what you don’t understand, write down what you find inspiring and ask yourself What struck me in this reading? Why? What does it say about God or Jesus Christ? How is it relevant to me today, in my situation? • Prayer (Oratio): Read the passage or reading once more and then thank the Lord for his inspiration or bring before him your petitions. • Contemplation (Contemplatio): Read the passage again and ‘be still in the presence of God’.

mother wants to replace their children, nor hog the limelight! On the contrary, mothers desire that their children will mature into their proper vocations, and reach their fullest potential. Hence, as the mother of God, Mary always leads us to her Son and she magnifies him. In doing so, she allows Jesus to be who he is for all of humanity: Saviour. At the same

in Cana, “Do whatever he tells you” (Jn 2:5), so she daily and perpetually directs us to her Son. Devotion to Our Lady, therefore, glorifies God still more because as St Louis Marie de Montfort says, “Mary only exists with reference to God.”

The Regina Caeli At noon during Eastertide Queen of heaven, rejoice, alleluia! for he whom you were worthy to bear, alleluia! has risen as he said, alleluia! Pray for us to God, alleluia! Let us pray; O God, who through the resurrection of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, did vouchsafe to give joy to the world; grant, we beseech you, that through his Mother, the Virgin Mary, we may obtain the joys of everlasting life. January 1st - 6th January • Supplies: You don’t need any special supplies!

25th January • Supplies: - Swimming goggles - Black paper or card - Scissors - Sticky tape

- The Arrival of the Three Kings The feast of the Epiphany celebrates the visit of the Wise Men to the Christ Child. In the days leading up to the 6 January help them on their journey to the manger by moving them slowly towards the Holy Family in your nativity crib. If you are lucky enough to have a large crib, plan spaces for the three kings to stop each day. If you have a smaller one, start the kings off on the other side of the room and bring them closer to the stable each day.

- Conversion of St Paul The story of the conversion of Saint Paul is well known. Saint Paul was originally called Saul, and he was an adamantly religious man; he believed that any Jew who thought that Jesus was the Messiah should be punished. One day when he was travelling to Damascus a bright light shone on him and Jesus spoke to him. Saul was blind for three days but understood that he had been wrong about Jesus – now he believed in Jesus too. After this he changed his name to Paul to show that he was a new person who would follow Jesus. It is very difficult to be blind. With this activity children can see what it is like to be blind and to have to depend on others to lead them. Cut up the black paper and stick it over the goggles so that nothing can be seen through them. One person puts them on. Next, the other use paper, ribbons, toys, clothes, blankets, or anything else you have handy to create a maze on the floor - lay out two parallel lines that twist and wind around a room or

garden, leaving a corridor in the middle that you can walk through. Lead the person wearing the goggles to the start of the maze, and using only your voice, give them directions to get from one end to the other, without straying from the path or touching the edges. You can say things like: take three baby steps forward, turn 90 degrees right, walk slowly until I say ‘stop!’.

- January Panettone Pudding Ingredients • 50g butter, softened • 250g panettone • 2 eggs • 150ml double cream • 225ml milk • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 2 tbsp caster sugar

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 160ºC. 2. Grease a shallow ovenproof dish with a little of the butter. 3. Cut the panettone into triangular wedges, leaving the crusts on. 4. Butter the slices lightly on both sides and arrange them in the dish, buttered side up. 5. Whisk together the eggs, double cream, milk, vanilla extract and caster sugar and pour evenly over the panettone. 6. Put the dish in a roasting tin and pour hot water around it to a depth of about 2.5cm/1in. Bake for 35 minutes until the pudding is just set - it should be yellow inside and nicely browned on top.

- 12 th January -

The feast of the Baptism of the Lord can be hard to celebrate, being as it comes after school and work are back and oftentimes before January’s long awaited payday, but this luxurious pudding can rekindle festive cheer without breaking the bank, as it uses up leftover Panettone (or Pandoro, fruit loaf etc).
