Prayer for the Success of the Eucharistic Congress

O Jesus, who art really, truly and substantially present in the Blessed Sacrament to be the food of our souls, deign to bless and bring to a successful issue all Eucharistic Congresses and gatherings, and especially the coming Congress of the Diocese of Charlotte.

Be Thou the inspiration of our labors, resolutions and vows; accept graciously the solemn homage we will render to Thee.

Send Thy Holy Spirit to kindle the hearts of priests, deacons, religious and all the faithful, especially the children, so that devout participation in the Holy Mass and frequent and daily Holy Communion may be held in honor in all the countries of the world; and grant that the Kingship of Thy Sacred Heart over human society may everywhere be acknowledged to the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, bless the Congress.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, Patroness of our Diocese, pray for us.

Saint Paschal Baylon, pray for us.

Saint Patrick, pray for us.

About the 2024 prayer card

The 20th annual Eucharistic Congress holy card features the “The Last Supper of Christ” by Guillaume Herreyns (1790-1800) to illustrate the theme “Remain in Me,” taken from the words of Jesus to His disciples at the Last Supper as recounted in the Gospel of John: “Remain in me, as I remain in you” (15:4).

Highly regarded Flemish Baroque painter Herreyns was a follower of Peter Paul Rubens, and this work depicts the same attention to color, composition and detail. Christ – illuminated at the center with a beam of light – looks out at the viewer, hands raised in blessing, mouth open as if inviting the viewer to follow Him, remain in Him, and “take and eat” His Body the Eucharist. He wears a red robe, a sign of His coming sacrifice on the cross.

The work is on display at St. Clement Church near Brussels, Belgium.

Eucharistic Procession

9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31

The Eucharistic Congress presents plenty of opportunities for people to come and spend time with Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, starting with the Eucharistic Procession through Charlotte on Saturday morning – one of the largest events of its kind in the United States.

Eucharistic Adoration is a focal point for the Congress, as the Eucharist is the source and summit of our Catholic faith. Adoration offers a source of inspiration and strength for the thousands of Catholics who attend this annual two-day event.

Starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, meet up along South Tryon Street near St. Peter Catholic Church to join in the Eucharistic Procession through the streets of Uptown to the Charlotte Convention Center, where the Eucharistic Congress takes place. Line up anywhere along the procession route as noted on the map and join in with your parish once its banner passes.

The Eucharistic Procession will culminate inside Hall A of the convention center, where a Holy Hour will be celebrated starting at 10:15 a.m. Saturday. (See next page for details.)

Following the Holy Hour, silent Eucharistic Adoration will be held in the Chapel in Hall B, adjacent to the English Confessions Area. Members of the Knights of Columbus will stand at the entrance to the Chapel, where you are invited to come in, kneel and pray for as long as you like. (See page 6 for details.)

Holy Hour and Benediction

Hall A – 10:15 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31

Homilist – Father Juan Miguel Sanchez

A native of Mexico, Father Juan Miguel Sanchez serves as priest-secretary for Bishop Michael Martin, OFM Conv. Ordained in 2021, he previously served as parochial vicar at Our Lady of Mercy Parish and Our Lady of Fatima Mission in Winston-Salem, and as parochial vicar at St. Matthew Parish in Charlotte and as assistant chaplain at Charlotte Catholic High School.

Holy Hour Gospel

+ A reading from the holy Gospel according to John (15:1-8)

Jesus said to His disciples: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does He prunes so that it bears more fruit. You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you. Remain in Me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in Me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without Me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in Me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned. If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you. By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become My disciples.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Eucharistic Adoration

Hall B: Adoration Chapel –

11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31

What is Eucharistic Adoration and what do I do?

Eucharistic Adoration is an opportunity to spend time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. You can pray in whatever way you want, bringing Jesus your thanks, needs, desires, fears, regrets and more. After entering the Chapel, you may kneel or sit. Praise, pray or just be silent with Our Lord, and remain as long as you like. Use the time to reflect or meditate quietly, pray the rosary, read Scripture, or simply talk silently with Him. Please be mindful of others and don't forget to silence all electronic devices before entering.

Do not place anything on the altar or touch the monstrance holding Our Lord.

In the aisle, upon exiting your seat, kneel on both knees for a moment as a sign of respect for Our Lord. Adoration in the Chapel will conclude by 4 p.m. on Saturday, and Mass will begin at 4:15 p.m. with Bishop Michael Martin, OFM Conv., as the principal celebrant and homilist. (See page 11.)

Suggested prayers for Adoration

1. Slowly repeat “Jesus, I trust in you,” or “Jesus, I love you,” or “Jesus, forgive me.”

2. Pray the ancient Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.”

3. Tell Jesus something that made you happy. Then listen. Tell Him what you are afraid of. Then listen. Tell Him what angers you. Then listen.

4. Sit quietly and just “be” in the presence of God.

5. Think of those who have hurt you and request a special blessing for them. Ask God to forgive you for all the times you have neglected or hurt someone else.

6. Choose a psalm to read quietly and meditate upon.

7. Pray a decade of the rosary.

English Track

Hall A – Saturday, Aug. 31

Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J.: ‘The Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist’ | 12:30 p.m.

Father Robert Spitzer is a blind Jesuit priest who has spent his priestly career promoting the connections between faith and reason, and why true happiness can only be found in fulfilling our innermost desire for love, beauty, truth, justice and belonging.

He has appeared on countless TV and radio programs over the years – debating Stephen Hawking, Leonard Mlodinow and Deepak Chopra on God and modern physics on CNN’s “Larry King Live”; debating the topic of physician assisted suicide on The Today Show; and appearing on The History Channel’s “God and The Universe” and a multiple-part PBS series “Closer to the Truth.”

He is currently the host of a weekly EWTN television program – “Father Spitzer’s Universe” – that discusses faith, science, philosophy and culture.

He is also president of the Magis Center of Reason and Faith – the largest science-based “faith and reason” institute in the United States – aims to turn the rising tide of unbelief among young people by producing high-quality publications and educational materials for middle and high school students in Catholic schools around the country that highlight the close connection between science, reason and faith.

Fr. Chase Hilgenbrinck: ‘Living a Eucharistic Life’ | 1:30 p.m.

Father Chase Hilgenbrinck hails from the Bloomington-Normal, Illinois, area where he grew up serving as an altar boy at Holy Trinity Parish in Bloomington. He was also a very gifted athlete.

He made the United States Under 17 National Team in high school and was named a high school All-American before moving on to play at Clemson University. While at Clemson, he was a four-year starter – helping the Tigers to the 2001 ACC Championship and four NCCAA Tournament berths including two Elite Eight appearances.

After graduating in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and international trade, he signed with the Chilean first team division soccer league. On a second division club in 2006, he helped the team achieve promotion to Chile’s top flight while winning the league title. He played the 2007 season in the first division while completing his fourth and final year in the Chilean league. In two of those years, he was selected the league’s most valuable player at the left full-back position. He also spent time with the Colorado Rapids and played for the New England Revolution in the United States Major League Soccer.

Yet he left this successful career as an athlete behind to become a Catholic priest – putting his love for God ahead of his love of soccer.

He was ordained for the Diocese of Peoria by Bishop Daniel R. Jenky on May 24, 2014. After ordination he served as a parochial vicar at parishes in Moline and Silvis, Illinois, as well as chaplain at Alleman High School in Rock Island. In 2016, he became the assistant chaplain at the St. John Catholic Newman Center at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the nation’s largest Newman Center.

Father Hilgenbrinck now mentors the Newman Hall resident advisor team and serves as the spiritual leader for the Koinonia and freshman retreat programs. He also helps to lead and mentor student-athletes participating in the Catholic Illini Athletic Intramural teams.

Pete Burak: ‘The Eucharist: Fuel for the Mission’ | 2:30 p.m.

Pete Burak is the vice president of Renewal Ministries, a ministry dedicated to Catholic renewal and evangelization around the world.

He is a 2010 graduate of Franciscan University of Steubenville, and he earned a master’s degree in theology from Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, Michigan.

He is a frequent speaker on discipleship and evangelization, and he is the co-director of Pine Hills Boys Camp. He writes a monthly column for Faith Magazine, and hosts the “Spirit-filled Leadership” and “The Hour” podcasts. Burak and his wife Cait have five children.

Child safety, lost children

There are three unmanned Child Safety Sticker locations: at the back of Hall A, the entrance to Hall C, and in Concourse A near Starbucks. Parents can write their cell phone number on the sticker provided and then put the sticker on their child’s back. In the event the child is separated from an adult, staff can call the phone number on the sticker to reach the parent/chaperone.

Lost children will be taken to one of two locations (whichever is closer): the Eucharistic Congress Information Booth in Hall B or the Volunteer Check-in area on Concourse A.

Nursing mothers rooms

There are two nursing mothers rooms inside the Charlotte Convention Center: one by Richardson Ballroom B and the other across from Room W211. Each room is equipped with a chair, stool and refrigerator. The rooms are private and can be locked.

Interpretation for the Deaf

The Eucharistic Congress offers interpreting for the deaf in Hall A. Volunteer signers will translate the Holy Hour and the closing Mass. Ushers will direct those seeking sign interpretation to appropriate seating in the front of Hall A.

Closing Mass meets your Sunday obligation

The Closing Mass of the Eucharistic Congress is also the Saturday Vigil Mass, which means it fulfills your Sunday Mass obligation. The liturgy will be celebrated starting at 4:15 p.m. by Bishop Michael

Martin, OFM Conv., along with priests from across the Diocese of Charlotte.

Blessing of religious items

Just before the end of the Closing Mass on Saturday, Bishop Michael Martin, OFM Conv., will bless any religious items that attendees have with them.

Gain a plenary indulgence

A plenary, or full, indulgence is offered to those who attend the Eucharistic Congress, go to confession, receive Holy Communion and offer prayers for the Holy Father within one week of the Congress. “An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven,” according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1471).

Patron saint of Eucharistic congresses

BAYLON

St. Paschal Baylon (1540-1592) was a shepherd and lay brother of the Franciscan Friars. His life was noted for his devotion to Eucharistic Adoration. In 1897 Pope Leo XIII declared St. Pascal the patron saint of all Eucharistic congresses and associations. His feast is on May 17.

Support the Congress

The Eucharistic Congress is free and open to the public. However, it costs approximately $50 per attendee to cover the costs to put on the event. Tax-deductible contributions are welcome and can be made securely online via this QR code, or use the envelope inside this guide.

Hall A – 4:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31

Entrance hymns

I “At the Lamb’s High Feast We Sing”

At the Lamb’s high feast we sing,

Praise to our victorious king, Who hath washed us in the tide

Flowing from his piercèd side;

Praise we Him, whose love divine

Gives His sacred blood for wine,

Gives His body for the feast, Christ the victim, Christ the priest

II “Pueblo de reyes”

Refrain/Estribillo:

Where the Paschal blood is poured, Death’s dark angel sheathes his sword; Israel’s hosts triumphant go Through the wave that drowns the foe.

Praise we Christ, whose blood was shed, Paschal victim, paschal bread; With sincerity and love Eat we manna from above.

Pueblo de reyes, asamblea santa Pueblo sacerdotal, pueblo de Dios Bendice a tu Señor.

Te cantamos, oh, Hijo amado del Padre Te alabamos, eterna palabra salida de Dios. (Refrain)

III “Alleluia, sing to Jesus”

Alleluia! sing to Jesus! His the scepter, His the throne. Alleluia! His the triumph, His the victory alone. Hark! the songs of peaceful Zion thunder like a mighty flood. Jesus out of every nation has redeemed us by His blood.

Mighty victim from the sky, Hell’s fierce powers beneath Thee lie; Thou hast conquered in the fight, Thou hast brought us life and light; Now no more can death appall, Now no more the grave enthrall; Thou hast opened paradise, And in Thee Thy saints shall rise.

Te alabamos, oh, Cristo nuestro hermano nuestro Salvador. (Refrain)

(Refrain)

Alleluia! not as orphans are we left in sorrow now; Alleluia! He is near us, faith believes, nor questions how; Though the cloud from sight received Him when the forty days were o’er Shall our hearts forget His promise, ‘I am with you evermore”?

IV “O God Beyond All Praising”

O God beyond all praising, we worship you today and sing the love amazing that songs cannot repay; for we can only wonder at every gift you send, at blessings without number and mercies without end: we lift our hearts before you and wait upon your word, we honor and adore you, our great and mighty Lord.

The flow’r of earthly splendor in time must surely die, Its fragile bloom surrender to you, the Lord most high; But hidden from all nature the eternal seed is sown -

Paschal triumph, Easter joy, Only sin can this destroy; From sin’s death do Thou set free Souls reborn, O Lord, in Thee.

Hymns of glory and of praise, Father, to Thee we raise; Risen Lord, all praise to Thee, Ever with the Spirit be.

(Refrain)

Alleluia! bread of angels, Thou on earth our food, our stay; Alleluia! here the sinful flee to Thee from day to day: Intercessor, Friend of sinners, Earth’s Redeemer, plead for me,

Where the songs of all the sinless sweep across the crystal sea.

Alleluia! King eternal, Thou the Lord of lords we own; Alleluia! born of Mary, Earth thy footstool, Heav’n Thy throne: Thou within the veil hast entered, robed in flesh our great High Priest; Thou on earth both priest and victim in the Eucharistic feast.

Though small in mortal stature, to Heaven’s garden grown: For Christ the Man from Heaven from death has set us free, And we through him are given the final victory.

Then hear, O gracious Saviour, Accept the love we bring, That we who know your favour May serve you as our King; And whether our tomorrows be filled with good or ill, We’ll triumph through our sorrows And rise to bless you still: To marvel at your beauty And glory in your ways, And make a joyful duty Our sacrifice of praise.

Introit: The Lord opened the doors of heaven, and rained down manna for them to eat, He gave them bread from heaven and man ate the bread of angels. Alleluia.

Kyrie

First Reading

A reading from the Book of Deuteronomy (Deut 8:2-3, 14b-16a)

Moses said to the people: Remember how for forty years now the Lord, your God, has directed all your journeying in the desert, so as to test you by affliction and find out whether or not it was your intention to keep His commandments. He therefore let you be afflicted with hunger, and then fed you with manna, a food unknown to you and your fathers; in order to show you that not by bread alone does one live, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of the Lord. “The Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery; who guided you through the vast and terrible desert with its saraph serpents and scorpions, its parched and waterless ground; who brought forth water for you from the flinty rock and fed you in the desert with manna, a food unknown to your fathers.”

The word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm (Ps 34:2-11)

R. I will bless the LORD at all times.

I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall be ever in my mouth. Let my soul glory in the LORD; the lowly will hear me and be glad.

R. I will bless the LORD at all times.

Glorify the LORD with me, let us together extol His name. I sought the LORD, and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears.

R. I will bless the LORD at all times.

Look to Him that you may be radiant with joy, and your faces may not blush with shame. When the poor one called out, the Lord heard,

Second Reading

A reading from the first Letter of St. Peter (1:17-21)

and from all his distress He saved him.

R. I will bless the LORD at all times.

The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, and delivers them. Taste and see how good the LORD is; blessed the one who takes refuge in Him.

R. I will bless the LORD at all times.

Fear the LORD, you His holy ones; for nought is lacking to those who fear Him. The great grow poor and hungry; but those who seek the LORD want for no good thing.

R. I will bless the LORD at all times.

Beloved: If you invoke as Father Him who judges impartially according to each one's works, conduct yourselves with reverence during the time of your sojourning, realizing that you were ransomed from your futile conduct, handed on by your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold but with the precious Blood of Christ as of a spotless unblemished Lamb. He was known before the foundation of the world but revealed in the final time for you, who through Him believe in God who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

The word of the Lord.

R. Thanks be to God.

R. Alleluia.

Whoever eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood remains in me, and I in him, says the Lord.

Gospel

+ A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (Lk 24:13-35)

That very day, the first day of the week, two of the disciples of Jesus were going to a village called Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus Himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him. As they approached the village to which they were going, He gave the impression that He was going on farther. But they urged Him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So He went in to stay with them. And it happened that, while He was with them at table, He took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized Him, but He vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the Eleven and those with them, who were saying, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!” Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how He was made known to them in the breaking of bread.

The Gospel of the Lord.

R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Offertory hymn: “Te ofrecemos, Padre nuestro”

Refrain/Estribillo:

(Refrain)

Reception of Holy Communion

Holy Communion will be distributed by clergy at various points in Hall A – look for the umbrellas. Low-gluten Hosts will be available at a designated area near the altar. Catholics in a state of grace who have fasted for one hour and who have made a good sacramental confession if they have been conscious of any mortal sin, may come forward to receive Holy Communion. Please remember that the Sacred Host must be consumed immediately in front of the priest or minister. We do not have intercommunion with other Christian communities. However, we are very grateful for your presence and suggest that those members of other Christian communities use this time for quiet prayer, thanksgiving and reflection.

Communion Antiphon: He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood, abides in me and I in him, says the Lord. Communion Motets: “Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence” (Gustav Holst) and “Panis Angelicus” (Camille Saint-Saëns)

II “Holy God, We Praise Thy Name”

Holy God, we praise thy name; Lord of all, we bow before thee; all on earth thy scepter claim; all in heaven above adore thee. Infinite thy vast domain; everlasting is thy reign.

Hark the glad celestial hymn angel choirs above are raising; cherubim and seraphim, in unceasing chorus praising, fill the heavens with sweet accord: Holy, holy, holy Lord.

Holy Father, Holy Son, Holy Spirit: three we name thee, though in essence only one; undivided God we claim thee, and adoring bend the knee while we own the mystery.

Hora Santa Evangelio (Jn 15, 1-8)

R. Gloria a Ti, Señor Jesús.

Primera Lectura
