PREPARATION FOR MASS Prayer of Saint Ambrose I draw near, loving Lord Jesus Christ, to the table of your most delightful banquet in fear and trembling, a sinner, presuming not upon my own merits, but trusting rather in your goodness and mercy. I have a heart and body defiled by my many offences, a mind and tongue over which I have kept no good watch. Therefore, O loving God, O awesome Majesty, I turn in my misery, caught in snares, to you the fountain of mercy, hastening to you for healing, flying to you for protection; and while I do not look forward to having you as Judge, I long to have you as Saviour. To you, O Lord, I display my wounds, to you I uncover my shame. I am aware of my many and great sins, for which I fear, but I hope in your mercies, which are without number. Look upon me, then, with eyes of mercy, Lord Jesus Christ, eternal King, God and Man, crucified for mankind. Listen to me, as I place my hope in you, have pity on me, full of miseries and sins, you, who will never cease to let the fountain of compassion flow. Hail, O Saving Victim,

RITE FOR THE BLESSING AND SPRINKLING OF WATER

Ky-ri-e, e- lé- i-son. If this rite is celebrated during Mass, it takes the place of the usual Penitential Act at the beginning of Mass. After the greeting, the Priest calls upon the people to pray in these or similar words:

Dominum Deum nostrum, fratres carissimi, suppliciter deprecemur, ut hanc creaturam aquæ benedicere dignetur, super nos aspergendam in nostri memoriam baptismi. Ipse autem nos adiuvare dignetur, ut fideles Spiritui, quem accepimus, maneamus. And after a brief pause for silence, he continues with hands joined:

Omnipotens sempiterne Deus, qui voluisti ut per aquam, fontem vitæ ac purificationis principium, etiam animæ mundarentur æternæque vitæ munus exciperent, dignare, quæsumus, hanc aquam ✠ benedicere, qua volumus hac die tua, Domine, communiri. Or, during Easter Time: Lord our God, in your mercy be present to your people’s prayers, and, for us who recall the wondrous work of our creation and the still greater work of our redemption, graciously ✠ bless this water. Where the circumstances of the place or the custom of the people suggest that the mixing of salt be preserved in the blessing of water, the Priest may bless salt, saying:

Supplices te rogamus, omnipotens Deus, ut hanc creaturam salis benedicere ✠ tua pietate digneris, qui per Eliseum prophetam in aquam mitti eam iussisti, ut sanaretur sterilitas aquæ. Præsta, Domine, quæsumus, ut, ubicumque hæc salis et aquæ commixtio fuerit aspersa, omni impugnatione inimici depulsa, præsentia Sancti tui Spiritus nos iugiter custodiat. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. R. Amen. Then he pours the salt into the water, without saying anything. Afterward, taking the aspergillum, the Priest sprinkles himself and the ministers, then the clergy and people, moving through the church, if appropriate. Meanwhile, one of the following chants, or another appropriate chant is sung.
