CATHY ANDERSON, M. PHOTOG, CR. PHOTOG, CPP Cathy Anderson was born in Mount Holly, NC, just west of Charlotte, and currently resides in Morganton, NC. She is a portrait photographer by day and enjoys landscape and nature photography in her spare time. A country girl with a cosmopolitan state of mind, her photographic career started in her mid-teens as a second-generation photographer. Trained by her beloved father in traditional photographic techniques, Cathy “grew up in a darkroom” as a film photographer. She went to college at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC, where she earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology. During her tenure at WCU, she explored the backwoods of North Carolina with her camera by her side, becoming an avid hiker, nature lover, and landscape photographer. In 2005, she photographed her first wedding as a film photographer, but quickly made the transition to digital photography. She opened her first studio in Newton, NC for a few years until she met Chris Garner from Morganton, NC. Chris and Cathy quickly found out that their shared synergy was very unique and decided to begin working together in Morganton. Celebrating over ten years as a professional photographer, Cathy works as lead photographer at TPS Photography in Morganton, NC. Cathy specializes in landscape photography, adventure photography, sportraits (sports photography portraits), senior portraits, and off-camera flash. Her style is modern and classic, mixed with a creative edge. The heart of her photographic work focuses on the psychological connection between photographer and client, understanding that a photo session is a truly vulnerable experience for all clients. She leverages that knowledge during portrait sessions to reveal a client’s true personalities in her portraiture. Cathy earned the prestigious designation as a Certified Professional Photographer in 2011 and her Master Photographer and Craftsman Degrees (qualified August 2017, awarded January 2018). She has also won several awards, including the Professional Photographers of North Carolina (PPNC) President’s Award, PPNC first and second place multi-maker wedding album design, International Print Competition Loan Collection Awards, Photographer of the Year (PPA), and photographic merits at the state (PPNC) and national (Professional Photographers of America [PPA]) level. Her landscape photography work has been featured in Adorama Camera’s YouTube channel, The Nightly News with Lester Holt, Washington Post, the Weather Channel, local TV news stations, Professional Photographers of America’s Loan Collection, art galleries, magazines, and various social media platforms. Cathy was a featured speaker at Imaging USA 2016 in Atlanta, GA and has taught seminars and classes across the United States, including classes for state conventions and PPA affiliates (South Carolina, Michigan, Virginia, and Minnesota), PPA Super One Day classes, and PPNC’s Carolina Photo Expo state convention and regional seminars, and Senior Portrait International.
Short Bio: Cathy Anderson is a second-generation photographer with more than ten years of experience, based in Morganton, NC. She has earned the prestigious awards of Certified Professional Photographer, Master Photographer, and Photographic Craftsman from Professional Photographers of America. Her photographic specialties include adventure, landscape, and “sportrait” (sports portraits with off-camera flash) photography, and she seeks to push the envelope with dynamic off-camera lighting and creativity. She enjoys photographing extreme sports and athletes in hard-to-reach locations, while utilizing off-camera lighting to set her sportrait work apart in a largely natural light world. In her portraits, she focuses on the psychological connection between the photographer and client, working to reveal a client’s true personality in her portraiture. Her award-winning photography has been published and featured in art galleries, national news outlets and magazines, and the PPA Loan Collection, and she has a great passion for teaching and preserving the roots of traditional photographic artistry.

Sean True, PPA Super One Day Student Sean True Photography 919-824-9036 www.seantruephotography.com | studio@seantruephotography.com Oh my goodness...there are not enough words to express how fantastic this class was. I've not had many classes that teach the business side of photography, and weddings truly have me throwing up my hands at times. Not anymore. Cathy and Chris have a system that works and that I can implement not only in my wedding business but in my senior work as well. Kudos to two amazing photographers and instructors!!! -PPA Super One Day Student
Enjoyed it from beginning to end. The teachers were great at keeping us all focused with the various topics and their personalities were great and very contagious. Brought lots of knowledge and technique back and have begun applying to my business effectively. -PPA Super One Day Student This class was great from learning about wedding/engagement albums, to IPS, to how to book your clients. One of my favorite things about the class was learning about IPS and how to keep the bride and groom buying more products. Both Cathy and Chris were great teachers and I felt that I could ask them anything. They were instantly friends. I am looking forward to taking more classes with Cathy and Chris! -PPA Super One Day Student
SPEAKING PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS
SPORTRAITS: REINVENTING THE ATHLETIC PORTRAIT Teenage athletes are bored with traditional sports portraiture--just holding a ball or standing statically in place; they want something more. They are looking for a different athletic portrait— something more dynamic, exciting, and intense. Sportraits fuse the world of portraits and athletics to give your client the dynamic and exciting sports portrait ready to grace the cover of any sports magazine—the photo they’ve been craving. Mixing movement, dynamic lighting, interactive posing, a strong knowledge of sports, and what athletes want is the foundation of this new movement in sports portraiture. This class will explore the psychology of how an athletic brain works and what an athlete wants, plus all of the essential on-the-job necessities: posing, dynamic lighting, special effects, and unique post-processing techniques (everything you need to make your photographs pop). Most of all, you’ll learn that creating a composited portrait is not necessary to create an exciting “sportrait” your clients will love. I will teach you how to “get it right in camera,” including essential lighting techniques and fun special effects to use during the sportrait session. We will also explore optional and minimal compositing techniques that will enhance the standard sportrait session, adding extra money in your pocket in the sales room! We will also explain how to target and market to your ideal sportrait client (not just seniors!) and the products they want to buy, as well as how to keep a strong social media presence to insure that you remain the go-to photographer within the teenage sportrait market. EXTREME OCF: TAKING OFF-CAMERA FLASH TO NEW HEIGHTS Off-camera flash has become a staple in the photographic landscape, using dynamic lighting to create vibrant portraits that wow audiences. Why not take traditional off-camera flash up a notch? We will explore the world of extreme sports (rock climbing, highlining, waterfall rappelling, mountain biking, boxing, caving, etc.) and learn how to use daring and extreme OCF setups to elevate your adventure photography to new heights. You'll get to experience the crazy and exciting setups, landscapes, extreme athletes, and essential safety setups that insure that my extreme photo sessions are a success. In an athletic portrait world dominated by natural light, I want to bust the stereotypical way of doing things and show that we can accomplish amazing things the more we think outside the box.
HIGHLY DYNAMIC LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY I was born and trained in a darkroom and I am a self-proclaimed purist photographer who “gets it right in camera.” So why would I want to explore the world of highdynamic range (HDR) photography? Simply put, I see it as an experience close to that of waiting to see the magic of a developing print in a darkroom. You cannot see the product of HDR until after processing in the “digital darkroom.” Join me in a class that explores my workflow from start to finish as an HDR landscape photographer. The class will explore fundamental photographic skills necessary for the success of an HDR photograph, what and when to photograph in nature, and HDR postprocessing using Lightroom, Photomatix, and Photoshop. Once you have a beautiful HDR nature photograph, what do you do? How do you get your name out there? We will explore different ways that you can start your landscape photography business from building a website, selling and pricing a fine art print, and the power of social media advertising (free!). Finally, if HDR is not for you, we will discuss the essentials of successful and beautiful nature photographs, from equipment to post-processing.
ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY BASICS: STARS AND A DSLR Summer nights, no moon, a million stars, and your camera‌but no telescope‌what do you do? Believe it or not, you can see more than you ever imagined using just your DSLR and a tripod! Join me as we explore the basics of astrophotography (settings, scene selection, light painting, etc.) inside and outside the classroom to learn how to create beautiful nighttime images! We will begin in the classroom teaching the basics of astrophotography and reviewing all of the crucial steps you need to know to create a night sky photo. Then, we will venture out into the night and apply what we learned inside the classroom to create vivid astrophotography landscapes, including the Milky Way, star trails, lighting painting, nighttime portraits with off-camera flash, etc. At the end of the course, you will possess the basic knowledge to create a portrait of the night sky that will wow and impress your friends!
ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY REIMAGINED: NIGHTTIME PORTRAITS You’ve mastered the basics of creating a nighttime landscape, but how do you raise your astrophotography to another level? Add some flash! From a basic backlit selfie to creative, fullylit nighttime portraits, we will explore off-camera flash basics combined with astrophotography principles to create dynamic and unique portraits as the Milky Way and stars stretch across the sky above. Whether you are photographing your favorite mountain scene with your friends or a bride and groom under the stars, this class will raise your nighttime portraits to the next level!
HOW TO AVOID BRIDEZILLA Remember when weddings were fun? Back in the day, a bride would visit your studio gushing about how much she appreciated your work and how much she respected quality photography. Fast-forward to the age of digital photography where easy access to affordable digital cameras has seriously watered down the meaning of “professional photographer.” Open up your computer and Google “wedding photographer” near where you live and you will be stunned to find hundreds of listings of “professionals” in your area. Feeling a little overwhelmed? Probably. Want to find out how to set yourself apart in the wedding photography world and be the standout in your crowd? All it takes is a little organization, knowledge of a bride’s brain, and knowing how to be a wedding ninja to accomplish this feat. Does it involve pretty pictures and impeccable skill? Of course, but there are plenty of wedding photographers who can create a beautiful photograph but cannot run a successful wedding business. It takes the combination of acute business savvy, bridal psychology, and photographic talent to make your studio rise above the rest. Join me in a psychology-centered wedding class that deconstructs the bridal brain, explaining exactly what she wants from start to finish and exploring topics that often go unexplained in the wedding photography world. I will illustrate every “behind the scenes” encounter I have with my brides, from the initial consultation to the delivery of the wedding album. We will explore wedding timelines, bridal meetings, photo sessions, album design, contracts, pricing, and more. You will learn how to gently guide potential brides to a sale, how to upsell wedding collections and products, and what NOT to do during sales sessions. Most importantly, we will discover parameters every wedding photographer should employ with brides to make sure that the wedding day runs smoothly and frees her from every possible stressor. Everything that you need to know about avoiding bridezilla, other than how to create a beautiful wedding photograph, will be covered in this class.
