[ THE NAVY INN ] The following project is a Bed and Breakfast located in the harbor of the city of Plymouth, England. The goal was to rehabilitate the existing cafĂŠ/ Bar Navy Inn and to add a new extension to the existing building where a new B&b would be located. A building with strong characteristics, the main objective was to respect its historic value. This way, the original volume that represents the history of this architectural object, was preserved, and the memory of the later attached volumes was honored by keeping its facade. The final result Is a B&B composed by three united spaces that represent the memory, the history and the present. One important characteristic from the harbor of Plymouth, is the fact that it is composed by blocks and narrow streets. Therefore, the new volume rises in proximity with the surrounding building, with the intention to continue this pattern of the urban design. The interior design of the Bed and Breakfast, much like the design of the Pub, intends to respect the current traditional look, mixing vintage elements with a modern design.

[ VISUAL ARTS CENTER - PALÁCIO DA ROSA ] In an increasingly aware society on environmental issues, the concept of sustainability wins each day a greater expression. Looking not only for the resolution of environmental problems on the planet, Sustainability is, inevitably, also associated to Urban Rehabilitation, particularly the physical rehabilitation of a building. In Lisbon, with the aging of its population and buildings, including its Historical Center, several interventions have been made towards the rehabilitation and revitalization of the city, following a sustainable perspective. Implanted within the walls of São Jorge castle, the ‘Palácio da Rosa’, classified as a property of Public Interest, presents a remarkable historical and symbolic interest in the ancient ‘Mouraria’ neighborhood. The following project, was developed as my Master’s thesis where I reflected on these issues, with not only an architectural approach, but also one of a social forum and environmental nature. The final result wants to be a sustainable proposal for the redevelopment of the ‘Palácio da Rosa’ as a Center of Visual Arts in an attempt to revitalize the Historic Center of Lisbon and promote the cultural tourism that has been growing in recent years.

Despite its recognized value at a national level with its classification as a property of public interest, and the great historical and symbolic importance in the urban fabric of the Mouraria neighborhood, the Palรกcio da Rosa and the Igreja de Sรฃo Lourenรงo are in an advanced state of neglect.

This rehabilitation project aims to give an eminently public character to this building and return it to the neighborhood and the city. The building is thus made up of four distinct areas: a visual arts center - with exhibition rooms, library, auditorium, etc.; ateliers for workshops, for permanent or temporary projects; a public square and garden; and a car park crowned by a viewpoint.

[ CONCEPT REFERENCES ]
The design of the pavement in the outer areas emerges from the creation of a pattern that is based on the irregular urban fabric of Mouraria, particularly the streets surrounding the palace. Starting from this pattern the design of the garden of the Arts Center, the viewpoint ‘Miradouro da Rosa’, the amphitheater and the central courtyard is created. All the outer areas of this built complex are thus conceptually united.

Japanese Ivy - Parthenocissus Tricuspidata [ VEGETATION THAT MAKES UP THE CAR PARK FACADE ]
Starting from the pattern of the urban fabric, the irregular stereotomy of the car park faรงade is created, aiming for an expression that contrasts with the preexistence, seeking, however, a harmonious coexistence.

[ KERKHOFLEI HUIS ] The following project proposes the renovation of a threefloor house recently acquired by a young couple and their two cats. The task was to reorganize, expand and revitalize the house while focusing on retaining some of its original charming elements while adding contemporary pieces like furniture, light fixtures, and artwork. On the ground floor, the hallway guides us to the living room, followed by a kitchen, a veranda, and a terrace, easily understanding the typical narrow trait from the houses of this neighborhood. On the levels above is a master bedroom, and a bathroom, toped, on the third floor, by the owner’s sewing Atelier and its storage room. To respect the owner’s desire to have an open-plan kitchen and dinning room, a veranda overlooking the terrace was extended from the original building, also with the intent to allow the natural light to travel until an otherwise dark living room. Next to the living room area is a corner reserved to play and listen to music, as well as the access to an underground basement where a soundproof recording studio is located. The design of this house pretends to reflect the desire of the owners to have a home as a place to retreat and recover. By preserving as much as possible the original woodwork of the house and by choosing materials like marble, terrazzo, and natural wood, the design aims to create a balanced harmony between authenticity and modernity. The selection of classic furniture pieces and the vintage decorative elements intend to echo the owner’s mindset and rejection of ‘throwaway culture’.
