Destination Helen Rally 2010
From the Founders of Destination Helen: Welcome to Fall 2010 Destination Helen Motorcycle Rally. We are ecstatic over all that is planned for the weekend and look forward to the many rallies ahead. We wish you all a safe and enjoyable weekend. We would not be here without all of the people who believed in our vision. Our sincere thanks to the City of Helen, City Manager, Commissioners, Police Chief, the staff and all of the local businesses who’ve joined us by advertising, participating in our scavenger hunt, poker run or making donations to the events. Our thanks to all of our wonderful sponsors: Chattahoochee Biker Gear, Miller Lite, Steven Murrin (The Original Biker Lawyer), Paul’s Steak House, Georgia (WNGA-FM) 105.1, Rodeway Inn, Helendorf River Inn, Frazier’s Harley Davidson, Helen Tubing (Pink Tubes), Ramada Limited, Chuck Watwood (Lawbike.com) Jack Daniels and Steele Horse Law. Of course, a very special thank you to the vendors and to you, Motorcyclists from all over the State and our Nation, who make this all possible. Whether this is your first or one hundredth trip to Helen, we know you will enjoy all this city and the North Georgia Mountains have to offer. While here, take it all in and enjoy! From the scenic mountain rides, scavenger hunt, bike show, tubing down the Chattahoochee River or listening to the many bands at the River Mist or Festhall, you’ll have plenty to do. We’re glad you chose to spend your weekend at Destination Helen. Think before you drink; park your bike and use our free shuttle service if you party a bit too much. It’s a lot cheaper than a DUI. Take care of your bartenders and servers and remember, never leave your drink unattended and obey all local ordinances. Please help us make this weekend a success! While Helen is a great motorcycle destination, it is also home for many. Please remember this when going through the “no wake zones” in the city. There is a place to get on the pipes and a place to respect the pipes. Have a great time and ride safely; enjoy!

A Ride Into the Past... Covered Bridges
Covered Bridges are getting scarce. A wonderful part of history, many have not survived the times as stronger, larger economical bridges replace them. So a ride into the past is required to locate them. Approximately 60 miles from Helen near Carnesville, GA, you’ll find Cromer’s Mill formally known as the Nails Creek Covered Bridge built in 1906 and 132 feet long. It is not open to drive on but a historical marker gives its’ complete history.
Poole’s Mill Covered Bridge (770-887-6461) in Cumming, GA is also approximately 60 miles from Helen and offers a scenic or direct route to get there. This bridge was started in 1820 but abandoned after the builder ran into problems. Bud Gentry completed it in 1901 after addressing the original issues its 14.5 feet wide and it spans 94.6 feet across the Settendown Creek. Pack a picnic and take a ride; there is a picnic area and ample parking with a historical marker to give you all the details about this wonderful

bridge. A bridge 30 miles away was used as recently as 1969 when it was replaced with a concrete span built for travelers. In 1975, the bridge was completely renovated and, I understand, sits on private property and can be seen from Antioch Road. Lula Covered Bridge (770-5326206) spans Grove Creek and is the smallest in Georgia at 34 feet and one of the smallest in America. The closest is the Stovall Mill Covered Bridge in Helen Ga. (800-858-8027) built in 1895 after an original covered bridge was washed away. It spans 36.8 feet across the Chickamauga Creek. For the movie buffs, this bridge was in the movie starring Susan Heyward “I’d Climb The Highest Mountain” from the 1950’s.

Waterfalls
It is often not the destination but the ride which takes us to the open road. There are beautiful falls hidden among the vast, scenic North Georgia Mountain which are just the right excuse for that ride. Just a little over 13 miles from Helen, follow GA, 75 North turns right onto Forest Service Road 44 (Wilkes Creek Road). Approximately 4-5 miles, bear right at the sharp curve into Upper Chattahoochee Campground wind yourself back to the parking area you will find signs for Horse Through Trail. Lined with tall hardwoods, these trees provide ample shade making for a cool hike to the top and the 55 foot tall Horse Through Falls.
Walking to Becky Creek Falls is fairly easy but don’t give up. Only 1.8 miles further down the trail will bring you to beautiful Martin Creek Falls. To get there from Helen, go north on GA 75, right on 356, left on 197 to Clayton, Ga. Then, at intersection Highway 441/ and Warwoman Road, turn East and continue almost 3 miles and there is a small pull off and picnic area for parking.
The closest and one of the most visited is “Anna Ruby” Falls, only a few miles away, with a history going back to the Civil War. This is a National Treasure and a must see. The confluence of two falls created by a spring under Tray Mountain became known as Anna Ruby. The smaller of the two, York Visitors hear the sounds of Falls, has a drop of 50 feet. rushing, bubbly, cool, blue spring For those who like heights, Curtis water as they hike the scenic Falls has a drop of 153 feet. two-miles of trail which leads Take GA 75 North, turn right on to Hemlock Falls.
