Harbingers of Spring I called on a few mountain folk to see what harbingers of Spring they recalled from childhood. Here is a sampling of what I gathered:
• • • • • • • • •
listening for the whippoorwill to signal spring father always planted potatoes on Good Friday when it’s warm enough to see barefoot kids you know its spring mother said anything you plant on the first day of spring will live mother aired out all the quilts, mattresses, and pillows each spring when the bloodroot blooms when the sarvis tree blooms mother always planted green beans on Good Friday early blooming flowers tell you spring is here
Spring always brings thoughts of new birth and starting over. But Spring also reminds me of what went before, of the past. Each Spring as I drive the roads around my area I see Daffodils and Yellow Bells blooming where there are no houses, no buildings, just woods and grass. I know the flowers are from old home places. Each Spring as I look for them, I wonder who planted them? Was their life harder than mine? Happier? What happened to them? What happened to the home place? The questions are endless and most have no answers. I like to think a mother like me planted them to add beauty to her life, maybe it was a grandmother who planted them, or even a husband trying to prove to his wife things would get better. Spring is a new beginning, a new start. I just know the ones that planted the flowers, the ones that went before, have something to teach us if we will only listen. Tipper

MODERN ARCHERY By Jake Veit Archery is older than written history; yes man was shooting the bow & arrow before he could write. Archery was mans survival for food and as defense. There is not such thing as a toy bow. But archery competition is one of the safest hobbies you can try today. Archery is a life sport, with today’s equipment I feel anyone can be fitted properly. Archery’s

needed discipline can and will challenge you, build self confidence and teach you self-control. But where can you find information on archery? The web of course, Archery is an Olympic sport, in Scouts and summer camps, 4H and some of our schools and colleges. Archery is everywhere and cannot be found! Most stores that carry archery equipment are for bowhunting not competition. There is
Indoor, Field, Target, 3-D and bowhunting and that is just a start. Be patient and persistent to find archery information. The general public sees archery as a simple weapon and dangerous. Nothing could be further from the truth, archery is
safer than most of the sports equipment is computer promoted in our schools designed and made of today. Modern archery space age material. You have most archers shooting a compound bow with wheels and cables and release the bowstring with a mechanical release, very accurate. The Recurve bow an older design, is much less complicated and is harder to shoot consistently.

You need to discover what style of archery you prefer before you buy any archery equipment, not easy. Check : USARCHERY.ORG, NFAAARCHERY.ORG, andGAARCHERY.ORG GBAA-ARCHERY.ORG or just check archery in general. You will be surprised at how much archery there is on the web. Next time we will talk about archery organizations and traditional archery. All
archery organizations offer different styles of shooting as separate competitions. Basically three: Compound bow and Release aid, freestyle (anything goes); any bow with a sight and accessories with a finger release, freestyle limited; any bow with not sights and finger release, Barebow. With the last 2 styles, sometimes
they separate recurve bow as its own competition. Some organizations have more classes or styles of competition, need to know the rules. All separate women and kids competition. Do you want to shoot for fun or do you want to shoot for score? Archery is a life sport with a personal challenge.

*** Flowers...are a proud assertion that a ray of beauty outvalues all the utilities of the world. -Ralph Waldo Emerson *** A morning glory at my window satisfies me more than the metaphysics of books. -Walt Whitman *** The violets in the mountains have broken the rocks. -Tennessee Williams ***
My legs were sticking together and a bead of sweat rolled lazily down my back. “Ugh. I’m hot,” I thought and glanced at the unmoving ceiling fan. “You hot?” I asked my husband. “Nope,” he replied never taking his eyes off the blood-squirting, shoot-em-up movie he was watching. “I’m dying,” I complained. Silence. “It’s an inferno in here. I wonder if the air is working,” I continued. No response. Incensed, I shoved up out of my chair and crossed the room to flip on the ceiling fan. Behind me there was a sudden quiet, as the love of my life paused his movie. “Why didn’t you just ask me to turn on the fan?” I walked back to my chair cooler but confused. Had I not made it clear that I wanted my hubby to turn on the fan? Sometimes husbands and wives speak two different languages – or so it seems. Lack of effective communication is one of the biggest happiness blockers in marriage. Notice I said effective. I communicated with my husband my need for the fan, but I didn’t successfully make him understand I wanted him to turn it on. Often in relationships we throw in the “genie factor” when making our wishes known. We give hints of what we want and hope the magic genie will help our spouse recognize our desires. Let me save you years worth of arguments and thousands of dollars in counseling bills by telling you the key to effective communication. Wait for it. Be specific when telling your spouse what you want. Would you turn on the fan for me? I’m hot. My back is sore. Would you mind rubbing it for me? Would you help with paying the bills by being responsible for all things medical? I might eat one of the children if I don’t get chocolate. Could you run to Kroger and buy me some plain M&M’s? Not the peanut kind and not the peanut butter strawberry kind. Just so we are clear. See? It’s not hard at all. Next time you find yourself glaring at your significant other because they haven’t noticed your toes turning blue with frostbite and offered to hand you the blanket right next to them, take a deep breath and say, “Could you please pass me the brown fuzzy blanket?” You are on your way to a truly happy marriage already. CAROL HATCHER is a wife, mother, teacher, and writer. She and her husband, Alan, live in Buford, Georgia with their three children. Carol and Alan teach classes on marriage, as well as lead marriage conferences. www.sheeptotheright.com

So, this month I talked to Katie Jacoutot from local Atlanta band Meadowood. I caught up with Katie via Facebook chat because I’m lazy and didn’t want to leave my couch. Plus I couldn’t pull myself away from watching my girlfriend play an intense game of Super Mario World on Super Nintendo. This alternative rock 5 piece consists of front woman Katie, guitarist Rico, Robert on drums, Dustin on bass, and Andrew on Guitar. Well anyway, now to the not so hard hitting questions. On the Scene: Okay so where did the name Meadowood come from? Meadowood: It’s the street that robert and rico grew up on. OTS: So you guys are a lot like parkway drive in that sense. Haha (Side Note: For those of you who don’t know Parkway Drive is an Australian based hardcore band who, in fact, named their band after the street the grew up on. I know you were all just dying to know.) MD: I suppose! OTS: You guys have been recording at Eoa studios this past week right? MD: Correct. OTS: What are you guys working on in there? MD: An ep. four songs OTS: All new material or stuff we’ve heard before? MD: One song we have played live before, all the rest are new OTS: Are there any plans for touring in the near future? MD: Not anything definite, but we’re looking to do a small one this summer. OTS: Any local shows coming up? MD: Not anything now, because of the EP. OTS: Where do you find your inspiration for your song writing MD: Every day, other music, anything I feel
strongly about I write about. I generally write about human nature. OTS: You mean you don’t write about getting drunk, partying, and being promiscuous with women?? How do you have fans?! Haha (Insert Nickelback reference here.) [wrap]
“I generally write about human nature.” Be sure to check out Meadowoods new EP when it’s released. You can check out all the updates on their new album on their myspace, www.myspace.com/meadowoodrock. So I will leave you with another band I’m listening to now.
WhaT I’M LISTenIng TO nOW:
Parkway Drive, like I said this band hails from Australia. They’re a little on the heavier side of things but very technical. Huge breakdowns and soaring guitar riffs. Check them out at: www.myspace.com/parkwaydrive.
