Choking outthe Whippoorwills
This time of the year I start listening-hoping to hear the first Whippoorwill of the season. I grew up hearing Pap tell a story about the Whippoorwill. In days gone by, the story was quite popular in our area-so popular a man once came to record the storystraight from the source as they say. Pap was lucky to hear the story from both-the source and the recording.
Old Man Jeff told the tale. He claimed to have been responsible for choking out the Whippoorwills in Bellview (a local community). According to Pap, at one time, Whippoorwills were so plentiful, that fox hunters claimed they interfered with their hunting. Old Man Jeff and his brothers were out fox hunting one night-and the Whippoorwills were so loud they couldn’t hear the dogs running. Old
Man Jeff told one of his brothers to pull out his shirt tail and tie a knot in it-to choke the Whippoorwills. As soon as he tied the knot the birds quieted a bit. Old Man Jeff told him to tie another one-and the birds got even quieter-Old Man Jeff instructed his brother to tie one more knot-as he tied the last knot-all the Whippoorwills fell out of the tree dead! And there hasn’t been a Whippoorwill in Bellview since. The story or should I say “tall tale” is funny enough-but Pap says the recording is even funnier. At the end of the tape-you can hear a lady say “anybody who’d
believe that is standing on their head” then you hear the interviewer ask who the lady is-and Old Man Jeff says “That’s my crazy old woman she don’t believe nothing!” I love hearing the call of the Whippoorwill-it’s kind of eerie and lonesome. Seems each year I hear them less. Today I was surprised to learn the population has decreased by as much as 80% in some areas, no wonder I’m not hearing them as often. Have you ever heard a whippoorwill? Tipper www.blindpigandtheacorn.com
Mountain Home & Hobbies Magazine.
Hello, I’m ‘Cat’, Publisher and co-owner of the paper you are holding... I
am the worldly and nomadic, mountain loving city-dweller; the creative, technojunkie in the back office at MHH (Mountain Home and Hobbies). Rick, or ‘Ricky’, as most folks in the mountains know him, is co-owner, born and bred with hospitality... he is the front office, sales and distribution team. He is a one man operation; but don’t let that fool you, he is a work horse. I give him a lot of credit because he really enjoys getting out, meeting and talking with new people, he hustles to get the papers out timely and puts up with me, so give him a break. (heh, heh.) Anyway, we hope you will be pleasantly surprised by the variety of content in here each month, not the same old same old you might expect from a FREE “Mountain” publication. It has a bit more edge, a dose of fresh perspectives and large helping of wholesome goodness. Of course, that’s because we want to pique your interest so you will pick up another copy each mid-month, as we fill the racks and shelves in local stores, restaurants, and any place of business that will let us in their doors. We think most places like us coming through their doors because we love promoting them too. But in case the copies in your area have all been picked up, you may go to the website and flip through the online version of each current issue. To learn more about our advertisers, click on the links to emails and websites and be sure to tell them you found them through Mountain Home & Hobbies. We appreciate your comments and suggestions, especially if you let us know what you like the most and any suggestions you may have. If you love visiting the southern Appalachian Mountains, or dream of living in a cabin with a view someday... or if you are bored or turned off by the toxic city nightlife... There are many alternative activities that are wholesome, relaxing or thrilling in the mountains. You can have a wild outdoor adventure or serene weekend retreat in North Georgia and surrounding areas, and we would like to hear about them. Send us a note and pictures of your favorite outings! Or maybe you will get ideas for your next family vacation here (or mission for solitude) doing what you love. If you love spending quality time with family and friends and enjoying the comfort of staying close to home... or your favorite hobby has something to do with enhancing your life through art, music, creativity or getting outdoors, etc., this magazine is for you. We love helping the small businesses in the rural communities with affordable advertising, and I enjoy building their ads and helping them succeed. So, let us help you get inspired to get out of the city and traffic for a change and get a breathe of fresh air in the mountains. Please patronize the businesses that support our paper so we can continue to help them grow and succeed, and tell ‘em where you found ‘em to help us, because we’re a small business, too. Thanks. Take care, Cat & Ricky,

Hiking Conasauga River Trail
- from critterchatter.com
For those of us who enjoy getting out in the woods with our dogs, one of the best things about warm weather is the opportunity to hike the wet trails. These are trails that follow a stream and frequently cross it, forcing you to get, as the name implies, wet. These hikes keep you cool on the hottest day, and give the dogs a chance to have more fun than is humanly possible. The Wilderness Act of 1964 sought to set aside areas of land that would be allowed to grow and become what they would, unaltered by man. The act describes wilderness as “an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain”. This act of preservation is a gift to ourselves, and to those who

follow, a token reparation to the planet we have altered so. A true wilderness area is difficult to find, especially in the east, where mans presence has been heavy. The Cohutta Wilderness Area in north Georgia was set aside in 1975, and added to in 1986, so that it now encompasses over 37,000 acres. Although it was logged early in the last century, time will erase almost all traces of the past. The Cohutta Wilderness Area
has within it almost 90 miles of hiking trails, and among them are two of the best wet trails in this state or any other. The Jacks River Trail is the better known of the two, and gets more visitors. While not as popular as Jacks River Trail, the Conasauga River Trail is in many ways a more enjoyable hike. If you enjoy quiet and solitude, you’ll like it here, and although it is not as wide as Jacks River, the Conasauga has more quiet pools to cool off in. Both are mountain streams with the kind of crystal clear water you
I took a class to learn the basics, and have a local bead store, that has a good supply of natural stones and fittings. I use amythysts, pearls, opals, and crystals. The natural stones, such as Jasper comes in many shapes, as square, oval, and round. Casual jewelry is popular now, and each piece is one of a kind. My family and friends have received my creations as gifts, and I have found places to sell my jewelry for extra income.

don’t see often in Georgia. The Conasauga Trail starts on top of a mountain and the first mile is downhill to the river. That should tell you what the last mile will be like. The trail begins on an old road across from the parking area, and soon turns to the right and into the woods. Descending through a hard-wood forest, crossing an occasional brook, it takes about 45 minutes to reach the river. It’s time to get your feet wet! Measuring distance traveled in the woods is nearly impossible, and who cares anyway? On a trail like this, where you come back out the way you went in, it is better to measure the amount of time you have hiked. Remember, two hours in, two hours out, maybe a little more going up. Leave time to relax, eat, take a dip, and play in the water with the dog. Continued on Page 11

HUMOR
CREATIVE CORNER #1 A nun was sitting at the airport waiting for her flight to Chicago. She looked over & saw one of those weight machines that tells your fortune. Deciding to give it a try, she went to the machine, stepped on the scale and put her nickel in. Out came a card saying, “You are a nun, you weigh 128 Lbs and you’re going to Chicago”. The nun sat back down & told herself the machine probably gives the same reading to everyone. The more she thought about

it, the more curious she was, so she decided to try it again. She went back to the machine and put another nickel in. Out came a card, “You are a nun, you weigh 128 lbs, you are going to Chicago and you’re going to play a fiddle. The nun said to herself, I know this is wrong. I’ve never played a musical instrument In my life. She went back to her seat. Then, a cowboy came and sat down, putting his fiddle on the seat between them. Without thinking, she opened the case, took out the fiddle and started playing. Surprised at what she’d done, she looked at the machine and decided to try again. She went back and put in another nickel. The card said “You are a nun, you weigh 128 lbs, you are going to Chicago & you’re going to break wind.” Now, she knew the machine was wrong. in public in her life. But getting off the scale, she slipped and straining to keep from falling, she broke wind. Stunned, she sat down and looked at the machine, thinking I have to try this again. She went back to the machine and dropped in another nickel. Another Card came out. It read, “You are a nun, you weigh 128 lbs, you’ve fiddled & farted around & missed your flight to Chicago. #2 One day God was talking to Adam and he said “Adam you look lonely, I know I’ll give you a woman but it will cost you an arm and a leg.” Adam said “ what can I get for a rib?” The rest is history. #3 Yes, God loves us all, but He favors “fruits of the spirit” over “religious nuts!”

Continued from Page 6 Hiking the ConasaugaTrail An old pair of athletic shoes is perfect for stream walking. You know, the ones at the back of your closet that you won’t wear in public, but won’t throw out because they are still good for something. Well, this is it. A walking stick is really handy for keeping your balance on slippery rocks. As soon as it reaches the river, the trail crosses it, so you get your feet wet right away. It’s just as well, you’re going to be in out of the water from now on, so you might as well get used to squishy shoes. Most dogs love this part; the water is clear and shallow, and they can run and splash around in

it, do “dog stuff”, and have a ball. most places where the trail crosses the stream are shallow, and easy, but a few differ. At the 3rd or 4th crossing, the water is deeper, but slow moving. Depending on the rainfall, it can be waist to chest high. There is a nice campground here, and the river forms a natural pool you can swim in.
Farther on, at the 7th crossing, the water is deep and fast, but a

cable has been hung across the river to help you cross. It’s fun and not that hard to cross.

This is a fun trail for people with a sense of adventure who don’t mind getting wet, and their dogs. Take I-75 north to Dalton, exit 333; go right on Hwy 52 for 13 miles to Hwy 411, then left for 12 miles. Look for Greg’s General Store on the left. Turn right on State Road #2. Cisco Baptist Church is on the corner. In about a mile it becomes a dirt forest service road. When the road forks, stay to the right for 4 miles to a well signed intersection, then go right toward Conasauga Lake. When the road forks again, go left, away from the lake for about another mile to the Conasauga River Trail parking area.

Lasting Marriage by Carol Hatcher Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you? Matthew 18:23 NIV
I was hurt. I was mad. I was not going to forgive him again. My husband hurt my feelings for the one-hundredth time during our first year of marriage. I was tired of it. He expected me to forgive him each time; in fact, he knew I would. Not this time. I was over it.
When my best friend picked up the phone that day, she didn’t expect to get the earful that I gave. I needed to vent. I talked while she listened. Then she listened while I talked. “I can’t believe he hurt me again,” I complained, “how many times is he going to do this?” What she said next sank deep in my soul and landed with a thud. “I guess now we know how Jesus feels when we commit the same sins over and over again. In sorrow, we beg His forgiveness, but turn around with the same offense the next day. He must feel really frustrated with us sometimes.” Ouch! That was not exactly what I expected to hear that day, but it was obviously what I needed to hear. How could I not forgive my husband for whatever silly insult he committed when Jesus forgave me for sending Him to the cross with my sins? I felt ridiculous even thinking about it. My husband and I have been married thirteen years now. I honestly can’t remember what he did that day to upset me, but I will never forget the words of my friend. They live inside of me. Remembering them has helped me to avoid many hurt feelings and arguments. If Jesus can forgive me, I, too, can forgive. Are you harboring hurt feelings about something that you need to let go? Has a friend or family member done or said something that scarred you deeply? The only one you are hurting by holding on to anger is yourself. Read the parable of the unmerciful servant in Matthew 18. Praise God because you are forgiven. CAROL HATCHER is a wife, mother, teacher, and writer. She and her husband, Alan, live in Buford, Georgia with their three children. Carol and Alan teach classes on marriage, as well as lead marriage conferences.
