PLANTING A GARDEN AND PREPARING THE SOIL In my neck of the woods it seems more folks than ever before are planting a garden this year. While we always have a garden we are planning to plant a little more, in an effort to curb our weekly grocery expenses, this year. Each year we have a garden at our house as do Granny and Pap...then we all have a bigger one together, where we plant corn and other items that seem to take up more room. In days gone by when folks absolutely had to have the food that comes from the garden to live they usually spent part of the winter months “preparing” the soil. A few of the different ways they improved the soil:

• They had compost piles that they added back to the garden each year (I compost and add it back to my garden each year. Slowly it’s helping turn my red clay into luscious dark dirt, I just wish it’d speed up a little!) • If they lived on the side of a mountain (like I do) they would terrace out new ground for the coming summer’s garden. • They would rake leaves over the garden to add nutrients back into the soil during the fall and winter months to plow them under in the spring. • They would add chicken, horse and cow manure to the garden. • Some folks would add ashes. • And there were others who leave the previous year’s garden refuse and in early spring till it under to rot and add to the soil. This year Pap bought a load of chicken litter for all our gardens and boy you can tell it as soon as you walk out the door! But the smell will only be a distant memory when we are eating from the bounty that comes from the enriched soil. Happy gardening to all of you... until next time. Lasting Marriage - by Carol Hatcher

Foxes in Facebook Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom. Song of Solomon 2:15 NIV It all starts so innocently. No one is supposed to get hurt. But you are faced with a decision. Nothing monumental. Just a simple request. Add as friend…Or Ignore. Which do you choose? It’s been years since this person was in your life. Just out of curiosity, you slide the mouse over the blue box and click. It’s done. You are now friends again. You can open the window to their life and peek inside – just to see. Or can you? The Facebook phenomenon is sweeping the nation. It’s not just teenagers or thirty-somethings logging in to Facebook; even the baby boomers are getting in on the action. This social network has been monumental in reconnecting old school mates and acquaintances otherwise forgotten. But ask any Facebooker and they will tell you of the old flames that have discovered them. How Is This Affecting Marriages? Is It Wrong To Befriend Your Long Lost Love? Here are five steadfast rules to playing it safe with Facebook. 1. Share your friend with your mate. It’s okay to accept a friend request from an old flame or friend, but be sure your spouse knows of this friendship. When every thing is in the open, it makes all parties feel more comfortable. 2. Know when to say when. If you look forward to getting on Facebook just to find out information about a certain person or to leave messages for them, stop. Remove them from your friend list. This can be done without them knowing you’ve done it. 3. Don’t build new bridges. While it’s fine to send a message to an old friend letting them know about your life, it is NOT fine to continue to send messages back and forth on a regular basis. In doing so, you are building a new bridge to this person – a bridge perfect for “little foxes” to cross. Keep the foxes out! 4. Share information, not feelings. When communicating with this person, give them information about your life. Tell them about your spouse, your kids, and your job. Don’t share personal feelings. You are opening the door for disaster. Stick to the facts. 5. Make it obvious how you feel about your spouse. When sharing information about your life, include information about your spouse. Brag on the one you love. “Susie is starting her own business and is loving it! I’m so proud of her.” Use a picture of you and your mate as your profile picture. It screams, “I’m happy and married.” Facebook is a wonderful way to reconnect with old friends, but be ware of its downfalls, as well. While checking in with old friends is innocent, we can often view them with rose-colored glasses. Remember, you are only getting pinhole glimpse of their lives. Don’t allow the little foxes to get into your marriage because you are playing the comparison game. Everybody looks good on Facebook, but they all wake up with bad breath in the morning. Protect the sanctity of your marriage by following these five simple rules; you’ll send the little foxes running. CAROL HATCHER is a wife, mother, teacher, and writer. On The Scene An Introduction of Myself in Times New Roman By: Dustin Kemptner

It’s Time to Learn Some New Math: 2 > 4 The two-stroke Evintude E-TEC is superior to the four-stroke competition in every major category. Speed, acceleration, weight, fuel economy, ease of maintenance, even emissions. Which begs the question: why would you even consider anything else? The Evinrude E-TEC. Proof that two is greater than four.

Hey guys, I’m Dustin Kemptner and I‘m going to keep you up to speed on some music happenings in and around the Atlanta area. This is my first time writing a column so bare with me as I try to find my groove so to speak. I’ll be talking with local bands and even some national acts. Covering bands from the indie, metal, hardcore, pop punk, alternative, Christian, folk, bluegrass and all those other genres that, in my opinion, do not get enough of the coverage they rightly deserve. I’ll be conducting interviews, attending and reviewing shows, telling you about upcoming concerts, giving you a few of my favorite artists to check out, and shamelessly promoting my own band every chance I get.

“Listen to some music you don’t completely understand.”

I’ll be talking to Atlanta based band Meadowood in next month’s issue. I love these guys (and girl). They’re a bunch of really talented musicians and good friends at that. Front woman Katie Jacoutot has one of the best new voices I’ve heard in awhile. So expect big things from them. This may very well be a column of me just talking with my friends and about my favorite bands. But hopefully through my endless blabbing they’ll become your favorites too. I’m not a music critic by any means. I actually don’t like music critics on the sole reason, of who are they to decide what’s good and what’s not? It’s all up to the individual listener. Whatever you can connect with and what speaks to you. I’ll leave you with something I’m going to do every month. A couple of bands I’m into at the moment and a few upcoming shows I think you should check out. So write me and give me some feedback or let me know what bands you want to hear from. You can email me at: Dustydoors71@yahoo.com.

BANDS I’M LISTENING TO NOW: Circa Survive. An indie band hailing from This isn’t going to be your Nickelback Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Light airy riffs, 411 or any other Daughtry, Creed, or Theory original vocals, and a driving sound. Check of a Deadman we-all-sound-alike band ‘em out at myspace.com/circa survive information source. They get talked about too much already and I’m not sure why. (I UPCOMING SHOWS TO CHECK OUT: probably just lost half of my readers.) But The Masquerade Friday and Saturday April come on! Don’t be ridickleback! Expand 2nd and 3rd. A Day to Remember with your musical horizons! Listen to some August Burns Red and Silverstein. music you don’t completely understand. Just think, what would Pete Wentz do? I’m not sure what that means. Did I just tell you to marry Ashlee Simpson and get her pregnant? Eh, why not. I do however want you all to get involved! Write me and tell me if there are any bands you think I should check out. Or if one of my musical suggestions turned out to be something you actually like! Even if you’re in a band and want me to come interview you or check out a show. Let me know what I can do for YOU.
