2012 FWSSR Commercial Heifer Sale

Page 1

February 4, 2012 Dear Beef Producers, Welcome to the 25th Anniversary of the Southwest Exposition Invitational Commercial Heifer Sale. In a time where so many things are changing so fast, it is comforting to be able to rely on something as stable and tradition rich as the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. With their help I am proud to present the 25th Invitational Heifer sale. Where were you 25 years ago? 1987 brought us many memorable events: President Ronald Reagan demanded, “Mr. Gorbachev, Tear down this wall” (Referencing the Berlin Wall beginning the end of the Cold War.); Oliver North became a household name and the Dow Jones Industrial Average set many milestones hitting 2,000, 2,500 and finally 2,700, all for the first time. Microsoft Windows 2.0 was introduced in 1987, and be honest, how many of you thought the computer was just a passing fad? The livestock industry was finally starting to accept the importance of record keeping and many breed associations were promoting their performance programs. Live Cattle began 1987 trading at just above $55.00/cwt and reaching just over $70/cwt several times that year. What a difference 25 years makes. Today cattle are trading at all time highs and the future looks bright for cattle prices for years to come. You can now get an EPD on almost any trait you can imagine on a cow, and using these measurable traits the Cattle industry has improved the quality of its product immensely, which is reflected by the cattle you will find at this year’s sale. All of the cattle have been worked on a program set up by Novartis, Boehringer Ingelheim and Walco Industries and are ready to turn out. On behalf of all of the consignors from the past 25 years, I would like to thank Charles and Norma Rollins for their hard work and dedication to this event, and for establishing a great blueprint for me to work from to maintain the success of the Invitational Heifer Sale. I would also like to thank Phil and Sandra Stoll for their devotion to the success of all aspects of this sale, from making sure the cattle are penned correctly to overseeing the scholarship program they have been a great help to me. I look forward to meeting and visiting with each of at the sale. If there is anything I can help you with or anything you would like to discuss, please do not hesitate to call me. Here is to the next 25 years. Sincerely,

“We’re a cow-calf operation, and feed out all our steers and cull heifers. We also develop and sell bred heifers to other commercial operations. The worse drought in recorded history has forced us to liquidate much of our cowherd. Buyers are seeking elite genetics, willing to pay a value-added price and incur the freight to haul the cattle long distances. This experience has proven

our many years of investing in Gardiner Angus Ranch genetics is extremely valuable, even in the worst of times.” —Joe Mayer, Guymon, OK The Mayer family, long time GAR customer, has been in the cattle business in Texas County, Oklahoma, since 1883.
