IRON

Lake Ranch

The right kind of HEREFORDS...

Our Story...

In 2004, Dimitri Mataragas began to fulfill a lifelong dream of owning a ranch. He purchased land in the East Texas town of Athens and started to acquire some commercial cows. After a couple of years, it was decided that the ranch needed an improved product and the herd needed improved temperament. After much research, it became obvious that Herefords were what the ranch needed. Iron Lake Ranch began to purchase a few Hereford bulls and females, and realized how much better these cattle were than what they had been running. It was time to take the next step. At about this same time, Texas encountered the worst drought since the fifties and forced Iron Lake to significantly reduce the cow herd inventory. They decided to sell all of the cows except the purebred Herefords. From this, Iron Lake Ranch developed a plan to re-emerge as a purebred Hereford ranch focused on producing bulls and replacement females with all the traits that today’s ranchers are looking for - sound, functional cattle with perfect udders and plenty of rib and volume. The plan was to use the new technology of the cattle industry to move forward as rapidly as possible. Embryo

transplant and a stable of powerful donors gave them the best opportunity to accomplish their goals. One of the first and best opportunities came when the ranch was given the chance to purchase part of the legendary Churchill donor, Churchill Lady 202. 202 has quite a history being the mother of both Churchill Yankee and Churchill Rancher, as well as Churchill Cowboy who is one of Iron Lake’s feature herd bulls. You will find a lot of the 202 influence in our herd. Iron Lake Ranch would like to thank Dale Venhuizen for all of his advice and support over the years. Churchill Lady 202, one of the original Herefords at Iron Lake Ranch. In addition to the strong donor influence, Iron Lake is very focused on the sire side of the females, we think you will agree that we are well on our pedigree. Right now, we are very proud of our way to producing the type of Hereford cattle that will current lineup of herd sires including: Catapult; Red Bull; work for all facets of the industry. Regal; and Red Power; as well as, Genex Sire Lambeau. We thank you for taking the time to learn more about our We focus on bulls that will add muscle, performance and program. Bull P43281860

Red Bull offers the complete package that the Hereford breed is seeking. He offers an outstanding number package that includes a giant spread from BW to YW, and puts him in the top 5% of the breed for CE, BW, WW, YW, REA, BMI$ and CHB$. He combines this data with a powerful look - deep bodied and huge ribbed, with plenty of length and volume. He is a very well balanced bull with muscle, a stout square hip and a smooth front end. He has full pigment and lots of red. His look is backed up by his mother, who is a full sister to 008X the Champion Heifer of the National Jr. Hereford Show in 2011. Most recently, Red Bull was named Grand Champion Hereford Bull at the 2013 Houston Stock Show and Rodeo. Sexed and conventional semen available.

Hereford Lady was our pick of heifer calves in the 2012 Colyer Herefords Female Sale. Her dam, R111, is one of the top producing females in the breed and her sire, Mr. Hereford, whose genetics are rare and highly sought after, adds a powerful square hip and hind leg. Hereford lady blends perfectly from her top into her shoulder and maintains a feminine look through her front end. She has the depth and shape of rib that the real cowboys love. Her first calf, sired by Catapult, will hit the ground in early 2014 and we are extremely excited about this mating. We highly anticipate that Hereford Lady will become one of the top donors in the Iron Lake Program and make an impact on the Hereford Breed.

Beth 1L will go down as one of the legends of the Hereford breed. She is a full sister to P606 and her calves exhibit the traits that cattlemen love. It all starts with a perfect udder and pigment, this combined with a powerful square hip, huge rib and volume and lots of bone make her one of the most eye-appealing cows that you will see, no matter the breed. She also has some unparalleled performance being in the top 1% of the breed for both Milk and Rib Eye Area, and the top 5% for CHB index. A number of 1L progeny were among the most popular and high selling female in the recent Grandview CMR dispersal. 1L is one of the true matrons of the breed and we are excited to have her genetics as part of the building block of the Iron Lake Brand. 1162Y is one outstanding package. She is the full sister to 0230X, the 2012 Denver Champion Female that was shown by Haley Hudson, and a full sister to Churchill Force and Churchill ACE that are two of the highest performing bulls ever at Churchill Cattle Co. She is very impressive to see having massive bone and rib, combined with plenty of muscle and volume, but still maintains a very feminine front end with a smooth shoulder that is set at a perfect angle. We are looking forward to the progeny that this trendsetter will contribute.

Lambeau was the top selling bull in the 2012 Topp Herefords sale. He is a physically remarkable bull having big time thickness and masculinity, yet deep-sided and soft. He is proving to be a true breeding bull with several of the feature bulls in the upcoming Topp Herefords Sale being by Lambeau. He is also proving to be a bull you can use on heifers with confidence being in the top 1% of the breed for both Calving ease direct and birthweight. Lambeau is homozygous polled, has plenty of pigment and has the powerful look of a herd bull. His calves exhibit many of his traits especially the muscle and look.
