Announcements

Dear Folks, Wow, what a difference a year makes! First cattle prices ran up more quickly and higher than ever before, then, they fell back farther, and just as fast as they went up! All I can say is that if you plan to remain in the cattle business, you better have good doing cattle and be able to sell calves at weaning that can get heavy from mama’s milk and limited inputs; and bring you a premium when you sell them! Year in and year out; we breed and sell bulls that are designed to do just that! Our farm has been in business since 1954 and this is our 17th year of selling bulls and offering the Ridgefield Bull Deal. We make our entire living from the cattle and beef business; everything from conception to consumption. We are a seedstock producer, raise cattle and sell beef. We breed for structural soundness, calving ease, heavy weaning weights and heifers that are fertile, have great udders and produce enough milk for a calf to express its genetic potential. We have an excellent set of bulls in this offering, representing Angus, Braunvieh, BraunAngus and Simmental genetics. The bulls suffered from an extremely wet winter, with getting sick, however, once off test and back into more grassy pastures, with some sunshine and blue sky, they have poured it on! Our farm manager, Adam Speegle, now in his second year with us, has done a great job of keeping the farm running on all eight cylinders, in spite of the exceptionally rainy fall, winter, and early spring that we have had. We are especially pleased with the development of our breeding herd and the quality of calves that are hitting the ground this spring; boding well for the future of our program. As done last year, we have designated the top indexing bulls as “Brasstown Elite” bulls because of their likelihood of siring calves that will be outstanding in our Brasstown Beef program. The bulls listed with the Brasstown Beef logo by their side are the ones from which we will offer our Bull Deal, buying the calves and paying a premium. The premiums are worth $60-$85 per head more than if the calves are sold through conventional channels! All of the bulls offered have been thoroughly tested, including breeding soundness, ultrasounded for carcass merit, and measured for feed intake (RFI). Again, this year, we are also offering a beautiful set of Commercial Angus and SimAngus heifers; “The Brasstown Babes”. These girls have been chosen for docility, been pelvic measured to ensure against calving problems, ultrasounded, and 100% AI bred to curve bending, calving ease Angus bulls. You can build a whole program around them and the calves they produce. As stated above, if you plan to remain in the cattle business; you must make a profit, and you will make a much larger profit if you have the right kind of cows! The Brasstown Babes will be the right kind of cows, and for sure deliver the right kind of calves, trouble free! As we have been doing for the past several years, in addition to our own stock, we are pleased to offer a number of bulls produced by friends of ours with whom we have long relationships. In the sale are bulls bred by Robert Williams of WW Cattle Company, Tim and Blake Bagley, owners of Bagley Farms, and for the first time; William Cassell, a long time buyer of our breeding stock that has some really nice, well- bred Braunvieh bulls that we tested, along with bulls from Robert Williams and the Bagleys. Brasstown Beef, our branded line of beef, continues to grow in recognition for its excellence, and remains available in many of the Whole Foods Market stores (the top All Natural/Organic Grocery store chain in the US) throughout the South, and Ingles Markets in Georgia, Western N.C., and Upstate South Carolina. We anticipate that in the next few months Brasstown Beef will also be available in more grocery store chains. Brasstown Beef is also distributed by Buckhead Beef and Sysco to fine restaurants and meat markets from Hilton Head to New Orleans, and from Knoxville to Nashville. This year’s big item for us was our purchase Nantahala Meats; a business that my father, EJ Whitmire, began in 1947. We are the fourth owner, and after very substantial upgrades and modifications to the 68 year old structure, and increasing employment from five people to twenty two, we are now fabricating all of Brasstown Beef at that location. Personnel wise, we have expanded our team to now include John Rutherford, our controller, to help ensure that we can keep up with our expanding business. We are very lucky to have John join us and move his family a couple of hundred miles to be near our businesses! Sincerely yours, Steve Whitmire

Terms and Conditions

Ridgefield Bull Deal

It’s simple. You buy our bulls. We buy your calves. The Ridgefield Bull Deal pays a premium to customers with qualifying genetics for their calves, which assures us of a ready supply of high quality feeder calves for Brasstown Beef®. These calves must work in every phase of the operation – from the day we get them until the customer enjoys our beef. For commercial cattlemen with the right kind of cows, we provide a written contract with a guarantee to purchase, at a premium ranging from $6/cwt. to $9/cwt., your calves sired by our bulls. As a participant, you will save on shrink, commissions and transportation; avoid color discrimination; and receive feeding and carcass data. For more information on the Ridgefield Bull Deal, view the agreement at www.ridgefieldfarm.net.

EPDs and Supplemental Information

All cattle data, EPDs and supplemental information were correct when the sale catalog was published. Ratios for WW and YW in this catalog are from contemporary groups within the respective breed associations. These ratios should not be used to compare bulls from different consignors due to differences in management and environment. Ratios for feed conversion represent all sale bulls for the 2015-2016 trial, during the time period for which the test was conducted. Additional information will be provided as a supplement on www.ridgefieldfarm.net by April 9, and in print on sale day. Braunvieh EPDs are calculated using the Multibreed Evaluation Model with Angus as the standard base.

Terms of the sale are cash or check with proper identification; settlement must be made sale day and/or before sale cattle are released to buyers. Every lot will be sold to the highest bidder, with the auctioneer settling any bidding disputes.

Guarantees

All bulls have received breeding soundness examinations and are sound. All bulls sold herein are guaranteed to be breeders. Replacement, credit, or refunds, will be offered if bulls are certified by a veterinarian to be sterile. Physical damage incurred by bull(s) subsequent to the sale are not covered. The cattle sold in this sale are guaranteed to be free of genetic defects as outlined in the Braunvieh Association of America and the American Angus Association Approved Sale Rules and Regulations, or duly noted by lot number.

Registrations

All cattle are registered, unless noted otherwise, or registrations are pending. A certificate of Registry and Transfer will be provided for every registered animal, at no cost to buyer.

Breed averages listed below for a comparison of individual sale animal EPDs to breed at-large EPDs.

Residual Feed Intake (RFI)

Ridgefield Farm utilizes a GrowSafe System to obtain actual feed intake data across a 70-day test period. RFI is the difference between actual intake and expected intake (calculated based upon the age, size, gain and sex of a given animal utilizing academically accepted metabolic formulas). Cattle consuming less than expected feed are given negative values and those consuming more than expected are given positive values. The RFI data is then used in connection with the current cost of feed to calculate the actual increase or decrease in the cost of feed for each animal during the testing period. In studies conducted by the University of West Virginia and the University of Missouri, heifers were retained from low RFI bulls for two successive generations. Both studies found that these low RFI sired females provided a significant opportunity to increase stocking rates from 12% in lactating cows to 20% for dry ones. Imagine being able to increase your calf crop by a minimum of 12% from the same land. Perhaps the best news is that long-term studies have found no antagonisms to other traits. Under our Bull Deal, we typically offer a premium of at least 6¢ per pound more than markets for similar cattle.

Livestock Mobility/Mortality Insurance will be available at the sale clerk’s desk.

Buyers will receive $50 per animal credit for sale day pickup. Bulls selling for $3,000 or more will be delivered free within a radius of 200 miles. A $4/head per day yardage fee will be charged for any cattle remaining at the farm over 14 days. Ridgefield will not be responsible for injuries incurred following sale.

We think this bull has all the makings to be a big time Braunvieh herd sire. Thick and deep made, he hit all the numbers with an 89 lb. birth weight, a WW ratio of 106, Yearling ratio of 103, 121 ratio for IMF, and a ratio of 119 for REA! He’s got all of this and is feed efficient with a -1.1 RFI! His dam, a Genesis daughter, produced a $4,500 Braunvieh bull that was a highlight in last year’s sale. Another Braunvieh to sire great, thick, good doing calves! And, you will want to keep all the heifers!

Description

Marbling Score

Normalized score describing genetic merit for marbling with a range from 0 to 100 and a mean of 50. Higher values would be consistent with animals possessing genetic propensity for a higher marbling score and more favorable USDA Quality Grade.

USDA Yield Grade

Normalized score describing genetic merit for Yield Grade with a range from 0 to 100 and a mean of 50. Higher values would be consistent with animals possessing genetic propensity for a lower calculated USDA Yield Grade.

Tenderness

Normalized score describing genetic merit for tenderness with a range from 0 to 100 and a mean of 50. Higher values would be consistent with animals possessing genetic propensity for a lower Warner-Bratzler shear force and more favorable tenderness outcome.

Index

A normalized economic index describing combined genetic merit for marbling and Yield Grade with a range from 0 to 100 and mean of 50. Higher values reflect animals with genetic propensity to achieve more favorable carcass value on the basis of Quality and Yield Grade premiums and discounts.

We see a lot of heifers coming through our Brasstown Beef program, and “The Babes” represent the top 5% that meet our requirements to be those exceptional cow prospects that you will want in your herd! These females were initially selected for eye appeal, soundness and docility. Then we took pelvic measurements before they were synchronized for breeding. They will be 100% AI bred by the Service Sires listed, no clean up bull was used. These heifers sell guaranteed pregnant by palpation from a Veterinarian. All heifers will have ultrasound information; the same program we use for Brasstown Beef. A supplement will be provided on Sale Day and available online at www.ridgefieldfarm.net prior to the sale. Supplement sheet will contain the following information: Lot Number, ID, Date Bred, AI Sire, Estimated Calving Date, Pelvic Area, Percent IMF, Ribeye Area, Backfat and Ultrasound Weight.

THE RIGHT BULL. THE FINEST BEEF. Visit www.ridgefieldfarm.net for details on all bulls and females in the sale, as well as more information about the Ridgefield Bull Deal! The key to our success is the quality of our bulls. The most rigorously tested bulls in the business means you have better heifers to retain and receive more money for your calves. The calves sold to us from our bulls, RF Bull Deal, provide the beef for Brasstown Beef, which is sold in Ingles Markets and Whole Foods Market stores and is distributed by Buckhead Beef and Sysco to fine restaurants and meat markets throughout the southeast.
