HEART of the HERD MARCH 6
1:00 pm ct in Atwood, Kansas • Simmental and SimAngus™
Klein Ranch
WELCOME TO OUR INAUGURAL SALE... Klein Ranch is owned and operated by Heath and Ami Klein with Doug and Jan Klein, along with the two best ranch hands, Miles, 6 years old, and Hudson, 3 years old. Our family has been ranching and farming in Rawlins County since 1930. Currently we have 100 registered Simmental and Simangus™ cows as Klein Ranch. A 300 head Simangus™ commercial cowherd as Klein Farms with both being managed the same as a commercial herd. We are a commercial operation at heart and treat the registered cows just as the same. We emphasize that the cows need to be moderate in frame with volume, longevity, mothering-ability, and maternal calving ease with the end product always in mind. All of the replacement females are kept from within the herd. The steers and non-replacements are developed in our small background yard to 800 lbs and marketed as feeders through Tri-State Livestock as such. 2010 was the first year that we started selling registered bulls at Dixson Farms and a big thank you goes out to the Dixson Family for giving us such an opportunity. Since 2010, AI and embryo work has been a big part of our breeding program. In 2018, we enrolled all of our cows in the Cow Herd Data Roundup. For the last two years each of the bull crops were LD-DNA tested with EPD enhancement, polled, and non-dilutor if the pedigree did not claim if they weren’t. This is a very strong and well balanced set of bulls. The bulls average an API of 141 and a TI of 77 this is in the top 15% of both indexes. The bulls will be set up into different categories of All Purpose, Terminal, Maternal and Calving Ease. This is a recommendation of what the bulls’ capabilities will be. Throughout this catalog you will find more than bulls, you will find a program. A program that is here to help you, the commercial cattleman, make a better cow, a feeder steer, and a finished product. Looking for a way to gain value on your calves when you sell? Look at the Feeder Profit Calculator that is a free tool provided by International Genetic Solutions. Since the spring of 2018 we have been using this on every pot load of calves that we sell. Need some females this spring? There will be females being offered that come straight from the replacement pen and put through the same requirements that we expect from our own. Are you AIing your heifers or even your cows? We can help you find the best semen or even embryos to fit your needs. We have become a member of All Beef and we can get you semen from high value SimGenetic bulls. Our mission is to serve the commercial cattlemen because we are commercial cattleman. We can’t wait to see you at sale day, and visitors are always welcome. Sincerely, Heath Klein

GENOMICS
LD DNA - All bulls have been Low Density DNA tested. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? All bulls DNA must match to their Sire and Dam parentage DNA. It enhances the EPD profile of each animal giving you the producer a more proven EPD profile to look at. In addition, the bulls have been tested for color, polled and tested free of all know genetic defects. HOMOZYGOUS BLACK- When mated to a black cow all the calves will be black. HETEROZYGOUS BLACK- When mated to a red non-dilute cow ½ calves will be red. NON-DILUTOR RED- When mated to a red cow all calves will be red. There will be no grays, yellow, or buckskins. HOMOZYGOUS POLLED- When mated to a polled cow all calves will be polled.
BULL CATEGORIES
Our goal is to make the bull selection process easier. We know that the amount of information can be a little much. That is why we are trying to simplify the process for you. The bulls are divided into four categories; Maternal, Terminal, Calving ease specialist, and All Purpose. General statements about calving ease on all the bulls in the offering. When looking at the CE EPD, this EPD is generated for using on first calf heifers. All these bulls will work comfortable on cows and we would use any of these bulls on our own cowherd for their calving ease. • MATERNAL Maternal are bulls that we recommend to retain the females into the herd or selling heifers as replacement quality. • TERMINAL Bulls that would excel in operations that are looking to market all calves into a background or to retain ownership. Not recommended on keeping females in the herd. • CALVING EASE Bulls that excel with calving ease will work very well on heifers; we would use any of these bulls on our own heifers. • ALL PURPOSE These are bulls that are well rounded and would best be used in operations that retain females. While marketing all non replacements in a feeder program or retain ownership.

Lot 1
When we started to plan for this sale a couple of years ago as a family, we wanted to lead off this sale with bulls that embody our program. I believe both of these bulls fit the bill. Klein E42 is a moderate frame solid footed bull that brings a lot to the table. He comes from our most impactful donor cow ( DX W003) that we have had to date . For those of you who have been with us from the beginning know she always had cattle with a great look that work great for the commercial cattlemen. This is her best bull calf that she has ever had and will be her last. We lost her to an accident while E42 was on her side. We have a full sister to this bull that we have moved into our donor pen and believe she will do great things for our program.

These three brothers come out of our donor cow Y007. These are high performance bulls that would do wonders in a feeder calf or retain ownership program. They have performed very well since they have been put on their bull development rations.

Genomic enhanced EPDs. We put F72 in the heifer bull section of this group because that might be his strongest suit with ranking in the top 2% in CE and 4% in BW. But I wouldn’t leave him as a one trick bull with square look and moderate frame that brings a lot maternal and carcass traits to the table.

Female Offering
We have asked Pochop Angus Ranch, and Jared Holste and family, to join us in this offering. These are two programs that we feel fit into our maternal program very well. The Heart of the Herd female group will offer you something that we all feel is very important. The offering will be open females, bred heifers and a handful of first calf pairs that are out of each of our replacement pen. All females have had been calf hood vaccinated , pelvic measured, and given breeding shots. Please call Heath, Lincoln or Jared with any questions about these females. Also, Klein Ranch will be selling registered females at the Barbwire and Burlap Sale at Hoffman Simmental Farms in Clay Center, KS on October 14, 2019.

Pochop Farm & Ranch Angus was started in 2011 selling registered Angus bulls. PFR also has a commercial herd that we treat just the same as our seedstock herd. We believe that for the Midwest we need cattle with proper bone structure and fertility, all while raising the best calf possible. We strive to raise cattle that work for the producer and not the producer having to work for the cattle. We have been working for several years to get our average cow size down to 1250-1350 lbs. These are all home raised heifers. These bred heifers where bred to Coleman Playmaker 6465 and Hedgewood Black Granite 55. We would like to thank the Klein Ranch for giving us the opportunity to market our females locally. God Bless.
HOLSTE FARMS
Jared Holste 785-626-0866
Approximately 25 years ago, Jerry Holste began a commercial cattle herd with seedstock Simmental cows purchased from the Don Dixson Estate. Recognizing the benefits of both Simmental and Red Angus cattle, Jerry started using Red Angus bulls with his Simmental cows to maximize heterosis and hybrid vigor. Over the last decade, Jerry’s operation has evolved into a partnership with his son Jared, who moved back to Rawlins County after completing school at K-State as well as KU. Their commercial cow-calf operation markets Red Angus/Simmental steer calves in the fall of each year and replacement heifers the following spring.

Feeder Profit Calculator
The Feeder Profit Calculator (FPC) is a new tool that has been released by International Genetic Solutions(IGS). That helps the commercial cattlemen find a genetic and management value to their feeder calf crop. This is a free service provided by IGS which the American Simmental Association is a part of. We have been using the FPC to help market our feeder steers and heifers since the spring of 2018. This has helped us show buyers the genetic and management value of our commercial cattle. To help illustrate what the FCP looks like for you, Lot 3 and Lot 6 were ran as the sire of a group of calves that will be marketed in the fall of 2020. Both group of calves where managed under a VAC 45 day program. This is what we do on our commercial herd for a management program before we sell our feeder calves. Lot 3 (F15 black purebred Simmental) was ran on a blank set of black angus cow herd base and Lot 6 (F66 red purebred Simmental) was ran on a blank set of red angus cow herd base. Then you are given a $ number per hundredweight for the weight range you set to sell your calves. We would like to highlight when you do a blank red Angus cow base, they have a lower terminal value than a black angus. These two examples can give you an idea what our bulls can do for you in a feeder setting with a well rounded maternal backing.

ASA Quick Reference to EPDs, Indexes and $Values
EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDS): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing in what units they are expressed. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, sire A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more weaning weight than sire B. If calving ease was the trait, sire A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if sire B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect sire A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes, visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units in which ASA EPDs are expressed: ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See $ Indexes for more details.) BACK FAT (BF): Inches of carcass backfat at 475 days. BIRTH WEIGHT (BW): Pounds of birth weight. CALVING EASE (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): Pounds of carcass weight at 475 days. DOCILITY (DOC): Percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile). MATERNAL CALVING EASE (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. MILK (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. MARBLING (MARB): Carcass marbling score at 475 days. MATERNAL WEANING WEIGHT (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. RIBEYE AREA (REA): Square inches of carcass ribeye at 475 days. TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See TI for more details.) WEANING WEIGHT (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. YEARLING WEIGHT (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. YIELD GRADE (YG): Carcass yield grade score at 475 days. $ INDEXES: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide pieces of the economic puzzle. This is where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on integrated commercial production. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
