Notes on Reading our Sale Book... When we sort through the stacks of Bull Sale Books we receive each year, we notice everyone presents their data a bit differently. Surely, this can get confusing-but it’s important to remember there is no right or wrong formula to building a catalog. We choose to present the data that is most relevant to the way we make breeding decisions, the way we manage our cattle, and the trends we want to be able to track and observe in each year’s calf crop. For example, we like to think of our cattle in simple, straightforward terms, that we can actually keep straight mentally and visualize. So we don’t include as many EPDs as we could. We monitor our trends on all of the traits and understand their merit, but we strive to effect change according to what most of our customers need. So a simpler data set works well for us. We continue to provide actual records of ultrasound, gain, and birthweight, because we like to see whether traits are truly manifesting themselves - if the patterns in a sire group show that genetic markers have actually triggered and are doing what they promise. Large discrepancies or inconsistencies in a sire group are a red flag to us and will influence our decision of whether to use a sire again. So please don’t hesitate to reach out to one of us if you do not see data you need, or if it is unclear why we include it. We would love to help you utilize better the patterns we see when we put it together every year.

ABOUT THE BULLS

The bulls are available for viewing at the ranch prior to the sale. They are located in the development pasture right off the main highway. From Fairfield, take Hwy 408 west for 9.5 miles. You will see the bulls to the north. Videos of the bulls available online www.opengateranch.com EPDs on both sale bulls and Reference Sires are printed as calculated by American Simmental Association and follow the Simmental definition for each trait. Ultrasound scan data was taken on February 1 by Sonya Gregory and interpreted at a Central Ultrasound Processing Lab. It is an actual calculation of each bull’s carcass information that has been adjusted to a 365 day measurement, which will facilitate accurate comparison between bulls. American Simmental Association provided updated Carcass EPDs based on the scan data. IMF is marbling as a percent of mass, BF is back fat in percent of inch, and REA is rib eye in square inches. Scrotal evaluation and fertility testing was done by Dr. Cale Bjornstad on February 12. Every bull has been ear notched and tested for BVD Persistent Infection and the bulls have had all standard immunizations including vaccination against foot rot. WELCOME TO THE SALE Warmest greetings and Welcome to our 39th sale! As of the preparation of this Sale Book, the wood fires roar, we are with the cattle hourly and we all watch the weather report with keen anticipation for news of the cold breaking. For us here on the front, our most persistent challenge is always the wind which comes sometimes quietly, sometimes viciously, sometimes changing directions in the middle of the night. We have built our lives and homes and infrastructure and hay yards to protect ourselves from the power of the wind, but we also rely on it to bring us what we need: warmer air, moisture, some of the best haying weather around . . . Learning to adapt to climate and environment is one of the keys to multigenerational agriculture. There is a persistent and pervading romantic myth about the people who live in the West - the myth of the cowboy and the gunman and the rootless, restless trapper/trader/guide. Our collective history is peppered with the big, colorful characters who came first, took what they wanted, gobbled up resources and usually left things much depleted. This image is still perpetrated in film and literature and badly written country music songs that encourage people to think it’s all about what kind of boots you wear and the color of your hat. But if we look behind the spaghetti western romanticism we can always find the true, solid cattlemen who are the backbone of the Beef Business in the West. To quote Sam Walter Foss and Wallace Stegner, we find “men to match our mountains”, and families working to build “a civilization to match our scenery.” The West is complicated, fragile in many ways, majestic, diverse, and not tolerant of abuse. It needs stewards who appreciate all of those things and are willing to fiercely defend a way of life that supports, protects and balances the ferocious wildness of an amazing, precarious way of life. How do we relate that to a Bull Sale? To genetic choices? We have observed, in 39 years of offering a production sale, that there is a class of cattlemen who are seriously committed to building a business out of excellent beef cattle. They are not just capitalizing on available resources or squeezing another dollar out of their places-they invest time and attention in educating themselves, keeping records, pressing for change and improvement in their cattle. They are retaining genetics that are efficient, but also that are highly productive and respond to good management and care. These kind of cattlemen are still with us, all the way since 1981. They are loyal. Steady. Committed to a program of progressive advancement. They are men and women who match our mountains. Micah has a phrase for this kind of operator: not one to stand on convention or hide behind politeness she says: “If you really want to know what kind of cattle you’ve got, then get your butt in the barn.” Hands-on-management will take us farther than philosophy any day. It is exciting to be constantly meeting young producers who are still coming to the Beef Business with this kind of attitude and approach and it makes us very optimistic for the longterm health of our ranching way of life, in the West. Notes on Fertility

This year, our fertility testing and breeding soundness evaluation with Dr. Bjornstad went the best it ever has. Excellent test results and very few problems. Dr. Bjornstad commented that a 36 to 37 centimeter scrotal measurement is ideal for bulls this age. The official average for all Open Gate Bulls this year is 37.45. That makes us feel pretty good to know we are hitting the target for well developed bulls, ready to breed, and carrying high fertility across the board. This is a classic component that Simmental Influence will bring to a crossbreeding program. And if this kind of fertility is so measurably consistent in the bulls, we know it is present in the females too. You are buying a complete package of genetics for long term profitability. Another reason we are glad to stand behind our guarantee that our bulls will do their job.

The adjusted weaning weight on these Fall bulls is never really a good reflection of their potential. They are on the cow through winter, are weaned in June, and just gain on grass through the summer, until they go on test with the yearlings. Use their EPDs to balance the evaluation.

Otis is a very complete, traditional Simmental. He has one of those EPD profiles that seem too good to be true. His weaning weight compared with his calving ease are antagonistic, but the numbers have proven reliable for us in 5 years of using him. One obvious element is his length and very smooth shoulder. His offspring are consistently quiet, and his daughters are very feminine, broody and extremely productive.
