Please Join Us.....
On behalf of the entire Coggins Family we would like to extend our invitation for each of you to join us November 11 and 12 at Blackwater Cattle Company for our annual Stockmans's Kind Bull Sale, Elite Female Sale, and Commercial Brangus Female Sale. Competion for bulls was high last year and then we pomised to add more bulls to the sale in 2011. We have increased numbers to 150 bulls so hope all our great customers can fulfill your needs. Come see us in November and enjoy your time at Blackwater. We’ll treat you right, feed you well, and offer you a relaxed atmosphere to visit with other good folks from the beef business. Our annual Steak Supper on Friday night will be prepared by our family, and will also be highlighted with a Cajun Extravaganza prepared by our good friend Craig Neal from Morganza, Louisiana.
The Bulls.....
The bulls offered in The Stockman’s Kind 2011 Bull Sale at Blackwater Cattle Company are impressive! The measured facts are better than ever before and you can compare from the chart below. We guarantee the bulls will stand your evaluation, we guarantee the bulls will be the best you have ever owned, and we guarantee the bulls will stand your test. We know you get tired of weeding through pages of hype so we will simply ask you to compare the bulls in our catalog against all other sale offerings. We believe our stock will stand your evaluation and the facts behind our bulls stands on merit. We know you guys are smart enough to sort it all out. We believe the quality of our stock bulls match the level of our passion for what we do.....Raise beef bulls. Come see the bulls. They sell themselves. Nuff said.
Commercial Heifers.....
A sterling group of 150 commercial Brangus heifers will sell at the conclusion of the Brangus Bull Sale. There will be pairs, breds, and open heifers. All the facts related to these heifers are outlined in detail on page 59 of this book.
Naming Our Bulls.....
We've been asked a few times why we don't give our top bulls special names. Fact is, we do name our long term bulls but only after they sell, only if they are deserving, and only with the input from their new owners. We only choose to name those bulls we believe are herd sire prospect material and will make a future impression in the Brangus breed.
Don’t Let Anyone Fool You. Pounds Really Are Important…..
Since we were in the commercial beef business long before we decided to start a seedstock Brangus program we have a different take than most on this side of that line. We know a bull must stay in the pasture, must work every day, must stay sound, and do all of this while creating more value in each of the calves he sires for us. We still sell pounds! Pounds at weaning time, pounds on grass, pounds of gain in the feedlot, pounds of calves their replacement daughters will raise, and pounds on the rail hanging upside down. We believe in raising pounds, converting pounds of feed to pounds of gain, raising more pounds on grass, selling more pounds of muscle and marbling. Doing more on less each year! Our cow herd thrives on forage so their sons will as well. That’s a fact, end of story. Our bulls are gain tested to yearling time in 20 acre traps, not in a feedlot. After gain test bulls are summered in large pastures on “bread and water” and culled religiously as they separate themselves apart for soundness, quality, and keeping ability. Yes, we expect more than other from our bulls and we will show you bulls a set of bulls that have done more than others. You be the judge.

he Coggins family has a very simple approach to their agribusiness company, “quality is mandatory, produce the best product possible, and treat people right.” That approach dictates every decision they make in their farm produce company, farm supply company, commercial cow/calf operation, and registered Brangus seedstock program. Mike Coggins, and the extended Coggins family, operates Blackwater Cattle Company, Coggins Farm Supply, and Circle C Produce in Georgia and Florida. They call Lake Park, Georgia home but are just three miles from the Florida line with about 60% of their total operation located in Florida. The cattle entity is named for the dark water found throughout this region of the country flowing in the nearby cypress swamps and abundant in this area of South Georgia. Their operation is a diverse, multi-faceted agribusiness enterprise where every segment must complement the other highlighted by utilizing their cull produce production as an important feed source for their cattle programs. Their produce business encompasses 5000 irrigated acres of tomatoes, green beans, bell peppers, cucumbers, corn, cantaloupe, blackberries, and blueberries with another 3000 acres devoted strictly to carrot production. Mike Coggins takes the lead on the cattle program and he is joined in the family enterprise with his father, Felton and brother, Kevin; uncles Edwin and Gerald; and cousins Jade and Kelsey, and Anthony. Mike is a third generation farmer and rancher. Perry Coggins, Mike’s grandfather, raised dairy cattle and tobacco starting in the 1940’s. These were sold in the ‘70’s but the family had beef cattle, corn, cotton and soybeans well into the ‘80’s. The farm supply stored opened in 1974 and still supplies local farmers today. In 1987 the Coggins family started raising vegetables and in 2000 they decided to bring cattle back into the program. Once the family made the decision to re-enter the commercial cattle business their research led them to Brangus females. They were attracted to this polled breed’s mothering ability, calf raising value, total pounds of weaned production, heat tolerance, disease resistance, longevity, maternal traits, adaptability, foraging ability, and of course their black hide. Today Blackwater Cattle Company runs close to 500 commercial Brangus and Brangus derivative females expected to calve in a very strict 60 day calving season in the fall. A big part of the commercial herd is bred A.I. at the beginning of each breeding season using the best genetics in the country from Mound Creek and Blackwater. In 2003, Mike analyzed their program’s strength and weaknesses realizing they needed to add power from the sire side. “We started looking for top quality registered Brangus bulls, and visited lots of ranches across the country. We were impressed with the power we found in Mound Creek’s offering and their willingness to share their thoughts and views on breeding cattle. We were very defined in the type of bull we wanted. We needed sound footed bulls, optimal maternal traits, strong scrotal measurements, improved carcass merit, and we wanted to add pounds to our calves at weaning and later gain in the feedlot. We demanded bulls that were the soundest we could find, complete and overall a total package. The Coggins crew looked all over the country and “the Mound Creek bulls were the best,” he describes. In 2003 they purchased a number of bulls from Mound Creek Ranch in Texas and
to this day maintain a close relationship with Mound Creek.

A couple of years later one of the best seedstock herds in the country came available so the family scratched another itch and added a registered Brangus program. From this initial purchase Blackwater identified superior cows and placed them in embryo transfer. These cows included several important program Summit Cows, 4C Ms Lead Gun 192P4, 4C Ms Lead Gun 12N, and other donors representing the productive cow families numbered 487, 535, and 647. Other current Blackwater donors include MC Ms Extravagant 889P4, MC Ms Extravagant 129P12, RBM Ms Lead Gun 129S8, MC Ms Dateline 111L2, and MC Ms Dateline 111L10, collectively representing three of the most prolific and famed cow families in the entire Brangus breed. “We did not necessarily intend to jump into embryo transfer this quick, but felt if we were going to be competitive in producing the best bulls in the country then we needed to utilize our best cows to the highest degree possible in reaching this objective,” recognized Coggins. The registered cows are treated daily just like the commercial cows. Extensive weights and measures are taken on both commercial and registered production that include weaning weights, yearling weights, pelvic measures, carcass merit ultrasound measures, annual calving records, etc. “About the only thing different between our two cow herds is that we do weigh our registered calves at birth and we have a spring calving season to complement our fall calving season for our registered cows. Other than that we pretty much demand they do things alike.” Blackwater Cattle Company is a genetic partner with Mound Creek and this Brangus Bull and Commercial Female Sale marks their fourth annual production marketing event. The Coggins clan believes their location straddling the Georgia/Florida line and just off Interstate 75 provides the ideal location to service the cattle producing states in the Southeastern part of the United States. Come to the Bull Sale and you will be treated right, made to feel welcome, and fed like never before. It is apparent the entire Coggins clan loves family, friends, hard work, the world of agriculture, and their Brangus cattle. When you visit Blackwater Cattle Company you are guaranteed seeing an impressive Brangus seedstock operation, but more importantly, meeting a family that truly understands the value of God, country, family, and friends. They are dedicated to treating folks right and producing a quality product at the highest level. Perhaps even greater than their high quality of farm produce or cattle is the quality of the Coggins family itself. They embody the spirit of the American farmer and rancher having lived solely from the land and its blessing for what will soon be four generations.

Registration Number: Bulls noted with “R” number are Registered Brangus. Those noted with a “C” number are Certified Brangus and are either 1/4 or 1/2 Brahman influence. “UB” lots are blended genetic bulls from Brangus and percentage parentage. “UB” bulls are Ultra-Blacks, indicating they are a Brangus-Angus blend. “AX” recorded bulls are appendix registered purebred Brangus that have non-typical Brangus color pattern. Polled/Scurs: Denotes bulls that are either smooth polled or have the presence of scurs or slick spots. Those bulls noted as “scurs” typically have had scurs removed post-weaning. Pedigree: Denotes sire, dam, and maternal grandparents. Summit Cow or Summit Sire: Are noted in pedigrees with the word Summit or the abbreviation (Sum). Initially, a cow must calve at 30 months of age or younger. She must then maintain a calving interval of 380 days or less, weaning at least 3 calves with weaning weights recorded for all calves. Finally, the weaning weight ratio for all calves must average at least 105%. Once a Summit Cow has earned her distinction she will always be noted as such. A sire is given Summit status once he has at least 5 daughters reach Summit Cow status.
Individual Performance Birth Weight (BW): Actual weight at birth, expressed in pounds. Weaning Weight (205): Weaning weight adjusted to a constant 205 days. Takes into account differences in days of age at weaning time and age of dam at birth. Weaning Weight (Ratio): A direct comparison of an individual to all other individuals in its weaning contemporary group. Expressed as a percentage with 100 being the average for the group. Yearling Weight (365): Yearling weight adjusted to a constant 365 days. Takes into account differences in days of age at yearling time, average daily gain post-weaning, and adjusted 205 weight. Yearling Weight (Ratio): A direct comparison of an individual to all other individuals in its yearling contemporary group. Expressed as a percentage with 100 being the average for the group. Scrotal Circumference (SC): Testicular circumference, measured in centimeters, and adjusted to 365 days of age. Fat (FAT): Measured in inches and adjusted to 365 days. Intramuscular Fat (IMF): Measured as a percentage and used as a predictor of genetic marbling value. Ribeye Area (REA): Measured in square inches and used as a predictor of ribeye size.
Cooperator Code
Date of Birth Generation Fall 2011 EPDs
Expected Progeny Difference
Expected Progeny Difference (EPD): The genetic predictor of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the breed database. EPD Accuracy: Since all bulls in this catalog are non-parents, their accuracies are the lowest calculated by our national sire evaluation program. Every EPD reported is either current or an interim EPD. An EPD noted with a “P” is a pedigree EPD which is the average of the parent’s EPDs. Birth Weight EPD (BW): Expressed in pounds, predicts calf size and calving ease. Weaning Weight EPD (WW): Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of an animal’s ability to transmit weaning growth to its progeny. Yearling Weight EPD (YW): Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of an animal’s ability to transmit yearling growth to its progeny. Milk EPD (Milk): Predicts a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Maternal & Growth EPD (MG): Expressed in pounds, a genetic predictor of weaning weight by blending a combination of maternal milk and weaning weight value. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC): Measured in centimenters at yearling time, predicts testicular size. Fat Thickness (FAT): Expressed in inches, is a predictor of transmitting ability for external fat thickness and correlates to fleshing ability and fat cover at harvest time. Intramuscular Fat (IMF): Expressed as a percentage, is a predictor of transmitting ability for marbling or intra-muscular fat correlating to USDA quality grade at harvest time. Ribeye Area (REA): Expressed in square inches, is a predictor of transmitting ability of ribeye size and overall muscle mass which is a key component in USDA yield grades.

Staggering breeding value wrapped up in these two embryo sisters. Each represent those eye appeal EPDs we all appreciate such as impressive design, big tops, pretty front ends, middle to spare and width from end to end. Those items are a very small part of the difference these two heifers will make in any well designed genetic program. Their Hall of Fame sire has already established his place in breeds records as the bull that bridges the gap between show ring and pasture value. Their dam is a very cool story as well and one we feel has already established greatness in the herd. We sold the pick of our entire 2009 heifer crop at Houston in 2010 for $23,000 to Lee McGarity’s Vanna Farm. After an exhaustive search the best daughter of MC Ms Extravagant 889P4 was selected. From a 72 lb. birth weight this red carpet Lead Gun daughter weighed over 800 lbs. at weaning and 1073 lbs at yearling time when she scanned a 14.4 inch ribeye and 5.8% IMF value. Those four ratios were 111%, 111%, 112%, and 111%. Serious set of numbers that matched this young females unbelievable good looks and even more impressive pedigree. Since we could not contain our excitement 889W28 was placed in an IVF embryo program resulting in the two powerhouse heifers selling as Lots 2 and 3.

This year’s version was never intended to sale but our loss will be another’s gain. The two heifers we just mentioned weighed 740 lbs. and 761 lbs. adjusted 205 to ratio 110% and 111% respectively. Their sister born in 2007 weighed over 800 lbs. at weaning time. Pretty obvious this grand old cow, CCC Miss News Day 624J, is amazing and just weaned a Something Special bull calf over 800 lbs. You guessed it. She’s on her way to the donor pens.

Our Rock Star daughters are herd favorites and we anticipate so many good herd sires will come from these Rock Stars in the future. Our Rock Stars are very uniform, very complete, and will be the kind to work with a wide variety of sire lines. We have high hopes for Rock Star because for two reasons. Jethro and NMSU Miss 924. The Jethro daughters are awesome and are fulfilling our highest expectations. Of course most can recall the story of the old 924 cow. In the deserts of New Mexico she had nine calves in a row while maintaining a calving interval of 367 days while her dam calved 16 straight seasons and stayed at 363 day calving interval. A maternal sister to 129X19 sold last year to Draggin M for $14,000 so the family continues to prove powerful and profitable.

We hooked Nimitz up with 889P4 looking for a calving ease choice with extra marbling and milk value. We hit the jackpot because we do get those benefits from him, but that only scratches the surface. Our daughters of Guns are equally exciting. We have never seen a sire whose daughters have such early breed up rate, calve first time at such a young age, wean pounds heavy calves, and then breed back to stay in season. This lot stacks impressive breeding value with Jethro, Quiet Man, and Cool Hand. His maternal grand dam is also the dam of the #2 Ribeye bull in the breed and an important herd sire for our good friends at Hayman’s 711. This mild mannered prospect is easy to like.

His dam is sired by the multiple trait leader New Direction so she would be a paternal sister to the performance powerhouse MC Revelation 129T. The second dam noted in this pedigree is the cow many consider one of the top three in our entire herd. Our 192 family tree is well known and well documented for milk, marbling and more. Every breeder who has seen this incredible herd sire candidate, since he was a calf at side of his phenomenal dam, has felt he was as good as we have ever raised. Most felt he was the best they have ever seen. We are not completely certain we can go through with letting him go. However and bottom line, MC Nuff Said 192X is one more good hoss and is the best son of his great sire! We have long considered his dam as one of the top two cows at Blackwater. Says quite a lot when you put any cow in the same breath as MC Ms Extravagant 889P4. Consider this sensational pedigree history blended with all-around great measured facts. His 5.8% IMF value ratioed 121% against contemporaries and his 16.8 in. ribeye speaks for the muscle contribution 192X will offer. Additionally, the red carpet dams in his pedigree contribute limitless maternal and carcass value and read as their own Who’s Who of great ones.

A certain sale favorite due to his sensational sire, fertile dam, measured facts, and cow family heritage. We believe in this good prospect so we will keep a breeding interest in case we decide to put him in our AI line-up down the road. One of the long sided bulls in this sale he is also heavy boned, deep ribbed and correct from end to end. A big topped selection with a square hip and plenty of testicle size are sure items you will also like in 111X5. His maternal grand dam is a full sister to 111X10 and 111X2, each donor cows that have raised herd sires. In fact refer back to Lot 1 and you find this same good family clan. The dam of this lot has seven fall calves with an average weaning weight over 700 lbs. for six. For some reason one of those calves is missing from IBBA data base and could have been missed when we were transitioning this herd from Texas to Georgia in 2006. Note his excellent genetic predictors proven by a 117% weaning ratio and 113% yearling ratio. He is one of the younger bulls in sale but certainly one of the best.

Ideal size with an abundance of rib this striking choice is easy fleshing, sure footed, and has superior temperament. Note the big testicles, excellent post weaning gain, and balanced carcass measures. His dam is a herd favorite and is probably going to the donor barn after her next calving. She has a perfect udder, is highly fertile, works with any sire, and offers a pedigree with a different genetic spin. She does not bend the curve for computer generated numbers but does do what every good cow should do. Calve every year with an impressive offspring at side come weaning time. His sire is one of the best all-around sons of Tank known for big ribbed progeny with fleshing ability and soundness of design. Take the time to look this one up. He solves plenty of problems in most herds.

MC New Direction 000M24 MC Revelation 129T MB Ms Nimitz 129R “Tank” MC John Wayne 165N3 LL Ms John Wayne 468T6 Miss Brinks Cadence 468G15 He is one of the EPD powerhouse bulls in this entire sale offering. Top 1% rank for WW, YW, M&G, and REA. Top 4% for pure Milk and top 10% for SC and IMF value. Even more impressive than these genetic predictors is the quality pedigree with the multiple trait leading Revelation, the six time trait leading New Direction, the immortal Tank, and 468G15, the highly acclaimed cow many believe to be the finest Cadence daughter in the breed. This unique herd sire prospect is not going to win many pretty contests, however he is very thick, very long ribbed, very easy fleshing, and very moderate. We know these type of bulls work exceptionally well on sharp lined cows needing more power, frame control, and overall body mass and thickness. Anything with a 468 family number is in high demand so be sure and take a long look here. Might be the answer to your herd problems.

Without question one of the real powerhouse herd sire choices in this offering of great herd sire candidates. This massive topped yearling offers staggering genetic reach with awesome measured numbers and top flight genetic predictors. Even though this bull ranks in the top 1% for WW and M&G, top 2% for YW and top 15% for pure milk, we are certain the overall numbers will improve in the next EPD Evaluation given the opportunity to use and calculate his yearling measures for carcass and performance. Particularly considering his mind blowing blend of 17 in. REA and 6.1% IMF to ratio 111% and 121% respectively. His Real Deal sire is from that same 111 clan so highly regarded and noted in the pedigree of Lot 21 and 73. His paternal grandsire was the $39,000 second high selling yearling in the entire breed for 2006 and his bottom side second dam was the Summit Cow and donor dam that started our 487 family tree. He can sire the pounds, replacement daughters, carcass oriented cattle. He’s the “can do all” sale choice.

This phenomenal herd sire candidate is for those programs who understand the importance of raising beef bulls for our friends in the cow/ calf side of our industry. He is rugged, durable, pounds heavy, measured up, and looks like a beef bull. Few bulls will match all his eye traits, even less will match the measured traits, and still less will match his genetic predictors. Of course the fact his donor dam is the all-time great cow MC Ms Extravagant 889P4 puts him in a genetic league few will ever be able to compete. There are eight sons of this great cow represented in this sale and several will end up in registered seedstock herds, as have many other sons in years past. In 2009 we sold MC Dealing It 12U, the sire of Lot 140, and told the world he would be a dominant performance bull.

He offers the unprecedented genetic strength from MC Ms Extravagant 889P4 and the massive power of performance and muscle from MC Dealing It 12U. Collectively all bases are covered with these two in blend. Dealing It weaned nearly 900 lbs. and then adjusted to 1523 lbs. at yearling time while measuring a 17.1 in REA and plenty of IMF. Additionally, MC Dealing It 12U is out of the same cow that produced trait leader MC Straight Line 12R3. Last year our high selling bull was the $26,000 MC Big Deal 889W6 and we also sold BWCC Ms Real Deal 889W8 for $17,000. Both of these lots are bred nearly identical to Lots 140, 141, and 142. We place this herd sire in such high regard he was used for natural service in the spring on our best group of open heifers. During this breeding season MC Guns 000X39 was turned out at 14 months of age and performed above our best expectations with impressive breed up in the pasture. Even more impressive is the fact he stayed in sensational body condition and never missed a moment in his development. His sire has earned the highest honors at Mound Creek Ranch where other sons have been used as herd sires and daughters are in the donor pens. Note the Jethro daughter in the female section out of a neat young Guns daughter. This all-around herd sire choice is easy on the eyes, very economical in frame size, plenty long bodied, sound of hoof and skeleton, thick ended, big topped, and ideal in underline. His dam is a maternal sister to the six times trait leader MC New Direction 000M24 and is also left a daughter in our herd that is destined for the donor pens. He offers a different spin of pedigree but real power oriented in all measured traits.

Commercial Females

150 Bred and Open Commercial Brangus Heifers Will Sell From Blackwater Cattle Company, Lake Park, Georgia You can rest assured these quality ranch raised Brangus cattle will be the best front pasture heifers as will sell anywhere in the country this fall. Most of the original commercial cattle in our program came from a large cow/calf operation in Texas that is considered second to none. We take pride in the quality of heifers we raise and sell each year believing strongly that the best commercial Brangus heifers in the country are now raised in the Southeast by Blackwater and our bull buyers. All these ranch raised heifers sell with a complete health care program centered around modified live Pfizer Select Vac guidelines consisting of two rounds given around October 1 and November 1 to include Bovishield Gold 5 FP for IBR, PI3, BRSV, BVD; Ultrabac 7 for Clostridials; Lepto Vibrio; dewormed with Dectomax injectable; and all Brucellosis vaccinated. All heifers have had Blackleg and boostered at weaning time as well. The 150 commercial heifers will be individually tagged and sorted prior to the sale for quality, consistency, and uniformity of size, type, breeding status, etc. These Brangus and Brangus Baldie type heifers will sell in groups of five to ten head. We will sell the cattle on a per head basis times the number of heifers in each lot. The heifers will be on display in their respective lots prior to and during the sale.
Heavy Bred Heifers with Tag Numbers 201 to 245 These heavy bred heifers are due from November 25, 2011 to Jan 25, 2012. They are bred to three calving ease sons of the greatest donor cow in Brangus, MC Ms Extravagant 889P4 who has eight sons in this year’s Bull Sale. An awesome set of heifers carrying the best genetic value in the country.
Pairs and Heavy Bred Heifers with Tag Numbers 251 to 290
Texas is suffering through the worst drought anyone can remember. Due to the severe nature of this drought our good friends and bull customers at San Marino Ranch near Bay City, Texas needed to move a set of heifers that was intended to stay as their replacements. These heifers are in a nearly identical modified live vaccination program as Blackwater. The cattle are bred to calving ease bulls from Mound Creek and Blackwater and due from around sale time to January 20, 2012.
Open Heifers with Tag Numbers 301 to 370
A red carpet set of open heifers ready to start breeding season soon after this sale. If you have question regarding what kind of cows they will make just take a look at the impressive bred heifers noted above. These opens are just a year younger and out of the same good cows and sired by Blackwater Brangus bulls. When considering these heifers keep in mind the Open Heifer Breeding Guarantee noted below.
Open Heifer Breeding Guarantee Each customer that buys our commercial open heifers will have the option to take our Open Heifer Breeding
Guarantee. At the buyer’s option Blackwater Cattle Company will keep and breed your purchased open heifers. We will breed all heifers from December 10 to March 1 to Blackwater calving ease Brangus bulls, palpate heifers in mid-April, and have all purchased heifers ready for your pick-up at Blackwater no later than May 1, 2012. All heifers that sign up for this program will be guaranteed pregnant at time of pick-up or Blackwater will replace any open heifer with another bred heifer of like kind and quality. Buyer will pay for the purchase price of the heifers at sale time and agree to pay $500 per heifer enrolled at time of pick-up no later than May 1, 2011. Heifers will not be released until proper settlement has been made at time of pick-up. Beginning May 2, 2012 any heifers that have not been picked up will incur a daily charge of $2.00 per head per day. If any interested party has questions or interest in this program please contact any member of the sales team listed in the front of this catalog.
