This year’s calf crop has been generations in the making. With generations of progress built into each and every individual bull, heifer, and cow, you can buy in confidence that we have produced a calf that will excel. We believe our genetics are built to go to work for you and not be something you have to baby. We continue to develop these animals in large pastures and feed them a limited diet; that way they are forced to go out and graze and exercise to ensure longevity. All of our animals are born and raised here at the farm. You can bet that we know everything about them, their dam, and even further back!

This year we are excited to announce that this will not only be one of our highest quality and quantity selling, but we have often called it “the year of the baldies.” We have noticed the growing demand for blazed faced bulls and heifers. Clayton Young, Sam Young and Bradley Gibbs, Wendell and Nan’s grandsons, all enjoyed the farm through summer and in between sports. 2014 Clayton pursed his dad’s foot steps in being a teacher and a football coach. Sam finished high school and eventually went into law enforcement, and now is a Game Warden for Cleburne County. Bradley returns to the farm full time and purchases the last remaining herd from Gordon Hodges.

We are eagerly anticipating the Gibbs Farms Annual Bull & Replacement Female Sale. The annual event has developed a legacy of providing genetics who will move the beef industry in a positive direction. The Gibbs Sale marks the largest offering of Sim Genetics in the Southeastern United States. Our goal -- day in and day out -- is to provide customers with genetics which will ultimately enhance profitability. Our attention to detail and data collection has allowed us to make genetic progress, and the incorporation of advanced genomic technology allows us to move at a faster rate than ever before. Below is a summary of traits which we feel are the most impactful for customer profitability.

Calving Ease & Birthweight – The success of your operation all begins with a live calf. Fewer difficult births not only allow for more live calves, but of equal importance, a quicker re-breed on females and increasing cow longevity. We weigh every calf in our herd at birth and those who do not meet our specs for an acceptable birth weight are simply marketed in a terminal setting. The combination of our calving data alongside the RightChoice genetic screening allows us to find outliers in both a positive and negative sense when evaluating calving ease and birth weight. For customers placing the utmost importance on calving ease, look for bulls with the ACE logo to utilize on heifers.

Growth – The bulk of our customer base market their feeder cattle through auction barns. Therefore, we want our genetics to deliver as much growth as their environment will allow. Just like our birthweights, we collect both weaning and yearling data on every animal in the sale. If the cattle do not provide growth genetics for a herdsire candidate, he will not be placed in the offering. Likewise, for those customers who place the most importance on growth be sure to study the Accredit Terminal Merit (ATM) bulls identified by RightChoice.

Stayability – Cow longevity is the single most important trait from a profitability standpoint for those customers who retain females in the herd. A high Stay index is the best trait to evaluate to combine data for both fertility and longevity. Over the course of the last decade, we continue to push the envelope on longevity and calving intervals. In 2020 nearly 75% of our entire calf crop come in a 30-day calving season.

Carcass Traits – The evaluation of carcass predictors is traits who will add the most economic value for those customers who retain ownership. Providing superior carcass traits will add value to all segments of the beef industry and provide the best experience for consumers of beef. We not only evaluate carcass EPDs (REA, marbling, YG), we collect actual carcass data on our terminal bound progeny to increase the accuracy of our herdsires. In addition to carcass collection on our steers, we are proud participants in the American Simmental Carcass Merit Program. Which utilizes AI of many of our herdsires, expanding the number of carcass records we collect annually.

API & TI – Profit indexes are great tools to utilize, allowing customers to look at one figure to evaluate profit potential in a herdsire or replacement. Evaluating API and TI gives a quick summary of the genetic merit an animal can offer. For those customers who utilize a herdsire to retain females, market terminal bound progeny, and breed both cows and heifers, we encourage you to pay close attention to API. If you are a customer in a complete terminal setting, you should pay the most attention to the TI figure.

There is no doubt, we put a large importance of genetic evaluation through EPDs and genomics in our selection decisions. However, we are not painting the picture that we look at numbers alone. We take a stockman’s approach and live animal evaluation is still at the forefront of our selection criteria. Practical type, feet and leg structure, and phenotype pays as much of a role as any in selecting seedstock. Ultimately, when we say genetics that matter, we believe it is herdsires and females which will result in largest profit potential for our customers through genetic evaluation, while providing pleasing phenotypes who will hold up year in and year out.

Gibbs Farms Bull Development

Gibbs Farms Bulls are grazed on pastures containing KY-31 Fescue and volunteer summer grasses like common Bermuda, crabgrass, and clover very similar to the environment most of them will encounter when they go to work of the environment most southeastern cattlemen operate in. They remain in the large pasture environment from the time they are weaned right up until sale time, never spending anytime in a dry lot environment.

Yes, we supplement the bulls on a high roughage, properly balanced bull developer ration consisting of soyhull pellets, peanut by products pellets, cotton by products, ground hay, a special mineral package and enough extruded cottonseed meal to balance their protein needs. We never use high starch cereal grains in our breeding cattle developer rations.

Sale Terms and Conditions

Herd Health… Every sale animal and the entire Gibbs Farms breeding herd is properly vaccinated and boostered annually for 7-Way Clostridium, IBR-BVD-BRSV-PI3, Hamophilus Somnus, Pasturella, Leptospirosis, and Vibriosis. All heifers are calfhood vaccinated for Brucellosis and every calf born on the farm each year is tested for BVD-PI. All sale animals have been tested negative for Johne’s Disease and the cow herd is being tested annually. All animals on the farm are treated at least twice annually with a parasitic pour-on and at least once annually with Safe-Guard drench. All bulls have successfully passed a complete breeding soundness exam. Guarantee on the Sale Females… Every open heifer selling is guaranteed to be open at the time of the sale and guaranteed to be a satisfactory breeder provided they are managed for proper and acceptable nutritional and physical health. In the event a heifer proves to be a non-breeder, the customer must contact Gibbs Farms on or before May 15, 2021 to make a claim. A veterinarian’s statement will be required and Gibbs Farms reserves the right to have the heifer returned if deemed necessary. The customer will be given a full credit (minus salvage value of the original heifer) to be used in a future Gibbs Farms Sale. Every bred female is guaranteed to be bred on sale day as stated in the sale catalog or as updated from the auctioneer at the time of the sale. In the even any bred female is found to not be bred represented when sold, the customer needs to contact Gibbs Farms immediately and no later than May 15, 2021. The customer will be given a satisfactory credit on a future Gibbs Farms Sale. Remember: All potential claims must be made to Doug Gibbs or Bradley Gibbs at Gibbs Farms on or before May 15, 2021.

Genetic Conditions… The knowledge and testing technology for all types of genetic conditions is almost changing daily. What we knew to be policy yesterday may be obsolete today. Our policy at Gibbs Farms is to fully follow and abide by any and all testing and reporting policy pertaining to genetic conditions as recommended by the American Simmental Association. We further state that our personal policy is to not market any animals known to be carriers or suspected of being carriers of any genetic conditions classified by the ASA as lethal and/or high occurrence. On any animals known to be carriers of other non-lethal genetic conditions that the ASA recommends testing, we will test and provide results on any animals marketed. For full disclosure and explanation of all genetic conditions monitored by the ASA, please refer to the TraitTrac shown on their individual pedigree on the ASA website.

Retained Semen Interest… Gibbs Farms retains 1/3 semen revenue interest on each bull selling. On every bull, you are purchasing full possession, full salvage value, full decision making, and 2/3rds semen interest. The Gibbs Farms semen interest only comes into play when semen is marketed on the bull.

Guarantee on the Sale Bulls… Every Bull selling is guaranteed to be sound on sale day to the best of our knowledge and has successfully passed a complete breeding soundness exam performed within 60 days of sale time.

Full Purchase Value Extended Warranty on Sale Bulls… Every bull selling carries a 100% guarantee extended warranty for one breeding season, provided the bull is managed for proper and acceptable nutritional and physical health, not to exceed six months beyond sale day. In the event customer has any problem with a bull should immediately contact Gibbs Farms to report a claim. A veterinarians statement of the problem will be required and Gibbs Farms reserves the right to have the bull returned if necessary. A replacement bull of mutually agreed upon quality will be provided if Gibbs Farms has one available with delivery expense not to exceed Gibbs Farms De livery amounts on regular sale day animals. If a satisfactory replacement bull is not available, the customer will receive be given full sale credit (minus salvage value) to be used at future Gibbs Farms Sale. Gibbs will not be responsible for any settlement amount exceeding the purchase price of the bull.

What is the RIGHT ANSWER?

Everyone seems to have a strong opinion one way or the other in what the optimal frame size of a bull should be. First, any seedstock producer would agree frame scores is the most difficult and inaccurate data we collect annually. Cattle not standing perfectly in the chute among other challenges will greatly compromise the accuracy of frame size. Make no mistake, we value growth as much as anyone but in our eye’s growth traits are measured by the scale not by height. Likewise, the correlation between frame size and growth is not as highly correlated as one might suspect.

Ultimately, research shows cattle who fall in the middle in regards to mature frame size are the most productive in terms of weaning off the highest percentage of calf versus their body weight. We are not attempting to sway customers one way or the other we have bulls in the offering who fall in a wide array of frame size. However, placing a high selection pressure on frame size as it relates to growth might not be the best answers for customers.

A TRIBUTE to a True Friend

I first met Steve Sellers shortly after he moved to Georgia from his home state of Oklahoma, well over 30 years ago. While we both changed as we aged, found a few extra pounds and grey hairs (maybe I found more than a few), there’s one thing that never changed about Steve, his big smile. I have heard it referred to as an “infectious smile” and it could not be described better. Like many of you, I had the privilege of working with Steve professionally as he progressed through his livestock career with Tri-State Breeders, the American Simmental Association magazine, The Register, then as the National Sales Director for EDJE Technologies, and most recently as the Director of Communications for the Georgia Cattleman’s Association. Most importantly to me, our families became friends, even spending some vacation time together at the beach, and still to this day, my wife and daughter stay in touch with Cece, Megan, and Sarah.

It was sure no surprise that shortly after I went to work for Gibbs Farms in 2006, Steve was called on to assist with our print promotion, photography, and working the ring at the very first Gibbs Farms Sale, taking bids in the center position of the sale arena for 16 years. Shortly after Steve went to work for EDJE Technologies, he assisted in designing the first Gibbs Farms website. In very short order, he earned the respect and friendship of the Gibbs family and always went out of his way to assist with promotion or photography when needed.

Steve Sellers, a professional and a friend, taken from our lives far too soon and far too young. Our Faith in God gives us the strength to understand and accept and as we mourn the loss of a great friend, our Faith also assures us that Steve’s big smile will be shining down on us November 12, 2022, because Steve never misses a Gibbs Farms Sale.
