Welcome to the Sale. 2021 will mark the 167th year that our family has raised cattle in Iowa, and the 121st year we have been on the home farm. As chronicled here in past catalogs, we have always strived for genetic advancement. From Charlie Drake’s study of animal science at Iowa State University on the GI bill following World War I, to Larry’s early adoption of artificial insemination, Simmental genetics, black genetics, the use of Iowa’s “test stations” for evaluating bulls and embryo transfer, our family has strived to invest in the best genetics available to provide to our customers. 2021 marks a year of particular advancement in our quest to offer you the best genetics and the best service available in the beef market. With this year’s sale we offer the following advancements: •

We have available for every bull in the sale genomically enhanced Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs). As you know, EPDs are a powerful genetic tool that predict, with accuracy, the expected performance of the bull in areas ranging from calving ease to weaning and yearling weights to milking ability and carcass traits. EPDs include indexes that are a compilation of key traits. Simmental use the All Purpose Index (API) to represent the net dollars returned per cow exposed for operations that retain daughters and feed out steers and Terminal Index (TI) for those that put all offspring on feed and sell grade and yield. Angus use Value Indexes such as $B, a terminal index of dollars per carcass for postweaning and carcass performance, and $C, or Combined Value that combines maternal and terminal traits. Science has now given us the opportunity to improve the accuracy of the EPDs tremendously by a study of the actual genes transmitted to the individual bull. Think of it like this-EPDs are a pretty good predictor of what a bull will do in particular traits. Genomically enhance EPDs tell us with much more accuracy what genetics that bull actually received. Therefore, you now have available for every bull in the sale an even more accurate picture of his future performance in the traits most important to you. We have invested in some of the top Simmental and Angus genetics in the country for the purpose of making these genetics available to you at the commercial level. You will see the results in this year’s sale and even more so in the future. And we are offering these genetics not just through bulls, but have a set of outstanding bred heifers and a small, select group of eight open heifers that represent some of the best genetics available. In order to be the best seedstock provider that we can be we need to do more than offer top genetics. We need to also offer top level service. In that regard we have made four advancements this year. First, we know that being a great partner for you requires us to HAVE great partners. We believe we have found the best partner available in Allied Genetic Resources. This past year we joined other top seedstock operations in the country as a member of Allied. This organization is focused on the real beef business-its services are designed for commercial customer success. Allied works with us, as seedstock providers, and with you as our customers, to offer you value enhanced genetics and services that apply to your specific needs. While Allied will serve as our sale manager, it offers significantly more to you. For example, Allied has a strong partnership with Superior Livestock Auction and will work directly with our customers that meet certain criteria to market your calves. Further, Allied Feeding Partners, LLC purchases several loads of calves each year from customers of Allied members to feed out at our Nebraska feed lot partner. The goal of this program is not only to add value to your calves through marketing and bidding, but also to provide end of the line carcass date back to you. This information will help guide your future genetic decisions and enhance marketing on the grid. We will have much more on Allied in the future. For now, suffice it to say we knew we had found the right partner when Marty Ropp, our fearless leader at Allied, described the decision making process we should use in our operations. He said “When evaluating any decision for your operation ask yourself: Is this the best thing for my operation? Is this the best thing for my customer’s operation? Is this the best thing for my customer’s customer’s operation? Is this the best thing for the beef industry as a whole? Then, you should only take the action if your answer is yes to all of these questions”. Now that is our kind of partner. Second, this year we offer a new centralized delivery service to get the bulls to a central location near you. Our goal is to minimize the cost and time necessary to get your purchase to you. Third, we have formalized our bull guaranty and you will find the terms set forth in this catalog. We want you to know you can count on our bulls to do their job. Please review the terms of the guaranty. Fourth, we have a new physical location for the sale. We have built a new sale facility and the sale will be a video sale held in this facility and broadcast on DV Auction. We believe you will enjoy the comfort and accessibility of our new facility or, if it works better for you, the ability to view and bid on the cattle through DV Auction. The facility is located just a half mile from the home farm. While the building site does not yet have an address you can use the home farm address in your GPS and the sale facility is one-half mile to the east. The past year has highlighted the facts of superior genetics alongside strong marketing & health protocols paid premiums and in many cases was the tipping point of profitability for cattlemen. Planning for the future is a must and having a reputable seedstock provider who offers sound genetics and avenues to enhance the value of your feeder cattle is exactly what you get when you purchase a Drake bull. The history of breeding high caliber Simmental genetics spans multiple generations in the Drake Family. Each of the family members might bring a slightly different twist in their breeding program, but the end result of quality seedstock consistently is the end product. Drake and Iron Creek Bull Guarantee We guarantee every bull purchased in this sale to be a breeder (defined as the ability to settle healthy cows by the time the bull is 18 months of age) with the exception of: • Bull calves sold at side of dam; • Injury or disease occurring to the animal after time of sale; • Negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the purchaser; or • Bulls shown competitively after sale. In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the animal mat be returned to us, at the buyer’s expense, if in good physical condition and the return is in compliance with the health requirements of the state of Iowa. We shall be entitled to a six (6) month trial period following the return in which to prove the animal is a breeder. If at the end of such six months we are unable to establish that the animal is a breeder, we will, at our option, replace the animal with another of equal value or refund the purchase price. Either option shall be deemed full satisfaction and settlement. All of the legal jargon aside, we view the bull guarantee as a good faith neighbor’s agreement with you. We will act in good faith to determine if there was or is an issue with the bull and if there is we will make it right with you. In exchange we ask that you act in good faith as well. Please manage the bulls with common sense-provide sufficient feed and shelter, keep in mind the bull’s age when turning him out and monitor his condition. A young bull turned out with 50 cows in a snow covered pasture eventually won’t breed cows-but it isn’t his fault. We appreciate your business and will always work with you to do what is right.
