On behalf of the entire family here at Spring Lake Simmentals, we would like to welcome you to the 2022 edition of our spring bull sale. We warmly extend an invitation for you to attend our sale on March 2, 2022 at 1:00pm ON THE FARM. After 30 plus years of selling our bulls in Camrose, we have decided to make the move to having the sale on the farm where we feel the bulls will be much more comfortable in their own pens and on the same feed. We also think that we can accommodate and better serve our bull customers, friends and neighbors. Also a big thank you to the Camrose Regional Exhibition and their staff for 30 great years of looking after our bulls shit and us. Thank you. We feel that our bull lineup is bigger and better than ever. The top to bottom depth in each division is stronger than it has ever been. A large part of this we feel, has to do with the fact that we haven’t sold any females off the top end of our herd for several years. Because of this and the fact that we continually strive to add new and better genetics into our herd, the quality continues to improve. With each new calf crop, we still get excited for it’s arrival. And to me, that’s what its all about. To you, our valued customers, we certainly encourage and welcome visits to the farm to view the bulls prior to sale day. This set of bulls have extremely heavy hair coats, as thick as you will see anywhere! They are sound & free moving as you will see when viewing them at the home sale site. “Sysco” has thrown several home-runs within the large Red Simmental pen. They attain those deep, deep red hair coats Spring Lake has become so well known for plus great muscle shape, do-ability and eye appeal. Flanking them are top sons of “Tundra”, “Sedona”, “Century” and “Venom” whom carry many of the same attributes to be worthy of being included. The Fullblood Simmental herd has been maintained as a “quality over quantity” element for the past several years and you’ll see that for yourself upon inspection. ZSL Mr Ohtani 7J is one of the all-stars in this year’s sale offering. This Sysco son has combined an actual weaning weight of 1100 pounds and yearling weight of 1525 pounds to make him one of the outstanding herd sire prospects that will sell this spring. He is a thick, soft made bull that is as deep sided, heavy quartered and wide topped as you will find in your herd bull search. Kaboda is a homo polled, blaze faced, soft sided and thick son of Sysco that possesses what I call the wow factor. He stands out in the pen because of his easy doing structure and sharp profile. He is a very impressive individual that is long bodied, deep sided with lots of that great dark red hair. I didn’t realize just how good he was until he got into the picture pen by himself. His mother is a black Wolverine sired female that is quickly rising to the top of the black females in our herd. She’s good for a reason when you check out her pedigree that includes Shear Force, Black Edition and 680S. Butler 108J is another Sysco sired calf in one of the strongest herdsire groups that we have ever presented to you in our sale. This bull is another Sysco son with an actual weaning weight of 1000 pounds. This guy however has a little twist in him, coming from a fullblood cow. Not just any cow though. She is the mother of our high selling fullblood bull from last year, who also weaned off over 1000 pounds. For sure, this calf is a bit of an accident but one that I’m not sad happened. This cross between the fullbloods and the reds or blacks is beginning to gain popularity again, and with good reason. Here’s a performance bull that is sired by Red Tundra who is wide topped, deep sided and has plenty of substance. This two year old bull is a combination of two of the highest profile bulls that we have sold through our herd. ZSL Ripcord 2E on the top of his pedigree sold for $30,000 into the Russell Perkins herd in Manitoba and on the bottom side we have ZSL Mandako who sold for $40,000 into the Rendezvous Farms herd, also in Manitoba. Because of the fact that we liked this bull a lot due to his thickness, depth and dark red color, and because we never got a heifer bull bought last year, it was an easy decision to use this bull ourselves. It takes a special kind of calf out of a special female when you’re born on May 10th to stay a bull here at Spring Lake Simmentals. This lucky little shit had all of that, and boy did he grow into the bull that he was supposed to be. The thickness and overall balance that is on display in this Crusader bull is second to none. His Wolverine mother is a black blaze faced model cow here on the farm that has stood out and been recognized by almost everyone that has had a pasture tour. A lot of miles will be made looking for a better black bull than this, let alone a two year old black bull.

Where do I start with this bull? Before we bought Sysco we had been using his sire, Capone, fairly heavily and thought why not just buy a Capone son. We feel we hit a homerun with the purchase of MRL Sysco 14D. He has done everything that we could have hoped for. He calves extremely well and the calves grow like weeds posting above average weaning weights and yearling weights. The bull calves have been extremely popular in our sales with their thickness, soundness, hair coats and gentle temperaments. The daughters have emerged as soft made and moderate framed females that have above average udders and milking ability. We have no doubt that a Sysco sired bull in your herd will be one that you will be happy with.

OH KAY TUNDRA 43F

Tundra 43F was a Transcon’s Red Deer Sale feature and when I saw him I knew that I wanted to own him. He was one of the soundest, thickest, longest, dark red and hairiest bulls that I had seen all spring. Fortunately his pedigree matched nothing in our herd and we brought him home. He calves extremely well and his calves are thick, moderate framed and correct. Come sale day you will see why we are so happy with the bull calves that he has sired for us.

Venom was a cornerstone in the SilverSmith Farms bull battery for a number of years. He was big, long bodied, athletic for his size and had a great foot under him. We had purchased a Venom calf from Maureen and Eric that got injured and they were kind enough to let us use Venom himself. His track record for producing some of their top end bulls and his outcross pedigree to our herd made him an easy choice and we have been more than pleased with the calves that were sired by him and are now in our sale.

This is a dark red Century son that we bought from Labatte Simmentals to introduce different genetics into our herd, while keeping with our goal to produce moderate, thick and structurally sound beef cattle. IPU Red Century 164F has done that for us. We believe that you will appreciate his sons in this sale as much as we do. The bonus in this bull is that Barry says his mother, 105L, is one of the most prolific cows that had ever walked his pastures.

ZSL Dempsey 80E is a smooth polled, fully goggled, blood red son of South Seven Mr Adonis 96Z. His calves are born easily, grow well and perform as efficiently as any horned full blood. His mother is a polled Foreman daughter that is a model cow, with the thickness, balance, and udder quality to make her a standout in the herd. His calves will add performance and maternal value while keeping the color consistency that Dempsey himself displays.

We love this bull. He sires calves with moderate birth weights, above average weaning and yearling weights and has a pedigree that takes any guess work out of this bull’s value. Co-owned with the Bieleny’s of Anchor Lazy U, we felt that we needed to keep using his genetics in our herd to add the performance and maternal values that we know are in this bull.

ZSL Ripcord is a bull that we raised and sold for $30,000 in our 2018 sale to Perkin Land and Cattle of Elgin, Manitoba. He was one of those bulls that was so soft made and full of meat and muscle with the heavy blood red hair coat that we like so much, that we just had to draw semen on this bull and continue to use him in our program. Adding to those qualities is the fact that he is royally bred, coming out of ZSL Red Alaska and a model Red Label cow on the maternal side that we absolutely loved. This bull has bred in consistency and the calves that he sires have it also.

ZSL Mandako 49B is a powerful Godfather sired herd bull that we raised and sold in our sale in 2015. He now resides in the great beyond but before that the Maguets, of Rendezvous Simmentals, Ste. Rose du Lac, Manitoba used him heavily and did extremely well with his progeny, males and females. We also have used him with great success because his calves are just darn good. Mandako genetics will add performance and maternal characteristics that any cattle breeder will appreciate.

The bull feeding program is built to maximize forage utilization and gut health; they are developed on grass with their moms on a strict mineral program. All the forages are sampled and analyzed to ensure quality forages are used. Once the calves are weaned, they are slowly moved onto a balanced TMR. The bulls are challenged with a forage-based TMR to help them develop and express their genetic potential. Matching suitable protein sources with proper starch is key to promoting lean muscle growth.
