Spring Lake Simmental Bull Sale

Welcome to the Zimmer’s annual Spring Lake Simmental bull sale. It is year two on the farm, and all the bulls will be kept on the farm until they are delivered. This reduces Doug and Eric’s workload and stress, as well as their bulls, a win for everyone! You get to view the bulls in their normal surroundings.

As always, expect a large group of soggy, hairy Red bulls that push down the scale. There is a great selection of “Zimmer Red” bulls in the pen. They are as dark as you can find in the industry. Again this year, the Sysco sons are very impressive, consistently heavy muscled with lots of hair, and 17 bulls make up this outstanding sire group! There are so many impressive ones that it will be hard to choose just one. I was blown away by Lot 18, a Betts son that is as powerful as they come and as red as you can get. You will also see sons of Epic, Coberg and Connected in the red group.

The black bulls are stunners this year with many having the money stripe. Lot 23 sticks out with amazing muscle shape, long bodied in a very eye appealing package, truly a feature. The black pen is also hairy and soggy with tons of muscle.

The fullblood section isn’t as large as the reds and blacks, but there is a nice variety of horned and polled bulls. Lot 66 really stuck out in January, cherry dark red and goggled with lots of length and muscle shape and polled to boot!

After many years of retaining all their heifers, Doug and Eric have made the decision to part with a group in the sale. The 300+ head cowherd has been built and replenished with home raised females making them very predictable. This will be your only opportunity to pick up a front end Springlake female!

Carbide 14K is a big nutted, homo polled Sysco son that is one of the poster boys for our bull sale with good reason. He is powerful and correct in every way with a super disposition. His thick, cherry red hair coat is an added bonus. If you want to take your breeding program to another level, this bull will help you get there. We sold a really good Sysco son last year as a lead off bull in our sale and there’s a very good chance that this guy is going to be our lead off Sysco sired bull in this year’s sale.

Lariat is a typical son of MRL Sysco that is a big hipped, heavy quartered and easy moving type of bull. Weaning off his mother at over 1000 pounds puts this bull in a separate kind of class. His mother, ZSL 65C, is not a big cow but she’s all there and has several times brought in one of these outstanding calves.

Another son of MRL Sysco that exhibits the extra volume, thickness and blood red hair coat that is seen in most of his progeny. His mother, ZSL 69C, has put bull calves in several good herds across Western Canada. This bull will not only give you desirable steer calves and replacement heifers but if this dark red thick hair coat is important to you it should be a lock, as his mother is every bit as dark red and hairy. And she has a perfect udder. Boom done!

A moderate framed, soggy made and heavy haired, dark red son of the ever popular MRL Sysco bull. We couldn’t be happier with the Sysco calves as he seems to out-produce himself every year. We now have a lot of Sysco females in the herd and the quality of those females make his genetics even that much more valuable. Viking is the right kind of bull for a lot of herds and the added bonus is his proven pedigree.

Sonic 1K is out of a first class sire, MRL Sysco, and a first class female, ZSL 43B. This herdsire prospect will grab your attention when you walk in his pen as he is a deep bodied, dark red and hairy, big hipped calf. His Odyssey mother is a big barrelled, easy doing, moderate framed cow with a really good udder. Look for this bull to work well in any type of cow herd.

He has the length and thickness and overall eye appeal to possibly even propel him in front of his older peers. His red baldy mother is a bigger framed cow that is as soft made and as easy doing as any cow in the herd. If you want to add some performance in your calves, Patriot 225K will certainly help you do that.

homo polled Sysco son is a stout made, thick topped and dark red hairy herdsire prospect out of one of the best black cows that’s walking in our herd. She is one impressive individual that is easily picked out in the pasture because of her frame, her thickness and her style. The combination of these two pedigrees make him a very exciting opportunity to add more strength into your herdbull battery. This guy is another one of those bulls that I would send to anyone, sight unseen and know that when he got to his new home, they would be happy with him.

A few problems set this bull back weight wise on his yearling weight but since then he’s come on like gangbusters. He will look the part on sale day and will have serious cattlemen around him. His mother, ZSL 74Z, has had several of our sale topping bulls in the last few years so we know that the genetic potential is there. She may be an old girl but she’s still as sound today as she was 10 years ago. As we are writing this footnote, she just laid down in the barn and had a beautiful cherry red heifer calf that will surely end up in our herd.

Nykee 185K is just a really nice, moderate framed and stout son out of one of the most consistent sires to walk the pastures here at Spring Lake, MRL Sysco. He is one of the younger bulls in the pen but gives up very little in performance to his other pen mates. This light birth weight, homo polled herdsire prospect also has a quiet disposition that we all want to breed into our cow herd and he can certainly do that.

Padgham has lots of volume, rib, length and a hair coat like no other...never-mind, he’s got the hair coat that all the Sysco calves have. He’s loose hided, long bodied, smooth and stylish. These Sysco sired calves are consistent year after year. His mother was the high selling black open heifer at the Rendezvous Farms sale in 2017 and she’s been a favourite since she got here.

Another typical Sysco son, he follows his sires traits of being moderate framed with enough thickness and eye appeal to make them a desirable sire group. We feel this bull has a lot to offer and you will not be disappointed with his future calf crop. HOMO POLLED

Ozark 97K is a heavy quartered, deep sided and wide topped bull out of the popular AI sire SVS Betts. The Betts calves that we have and the ones that I’ve seen at other farms are some of the thickest, easiest doing animals in the group. Ozark 97K carries all of those traits, maybe even a little better and he is blood red. His Odyssey mother is a dark red, soft sided, easy keeping female with a perfectly even and squared udder. This bull has the potential to go on and help improve any herd that he goes into. This is a definite herdbull prospect and one that we hope to use in the future in our AI program.

ZSL Heisman 46K is a Betts son, who weaned off at 1080 pounds, showing the power and performance that is typical of his progeny. They are soft sided and easy keeping while being structurally correct and sound in their makeup.

On the dam side of this herdsire prospect is a Mandako female that can only add to his value. Mandako himself has been one of our most consistent and sought after herd bulls because of the exceptional sons and daughters that he produces.

Here’s a big footed, easy moving, thick bull from Connected. Lots of hair, nice disposition with a smaller birth weight. 10K would work really well on a group of younger females. His mother is a smaller framed Advance daughter with a perfect udder and gentle disposition.

We were excited to try him on his mother as she is one of the top black cows in our herd and this pairing didn’t disappoint. If replacement heifers is what you’re looking for then here’s the bull. Bugatti is the 2nd calf his mother has weaned off over 1000lbs. been extremely happy with what Epic has done here in the heifer pen. He calves easy and they grow like weeds. His mother is an impressive Tundra daughter with a perfect udder and a ton of milk which allowed him to wean off at over 1000lbs on a first calf heifer.

This guy’s mother is an impressive lighter red blaze Black Canyon daughter and Connected being the powerhouse black blaze that he is, Bourne’s colour pattern was a bit of a shock as he came out with that full blood look. But when they grow into a bull like this, we’ll take it. He’s a long bodied, square hip meat machine with a great hair coat.

This Connected son has been one of my favourites since birth, from the day he was born until now, he’s the first one to walk right up to you as soon as you’re near. He’s hairy, stout and has a big foot under him and an incredible disposition. We unfortunately lost his mother this year but she was just a good honest cow that produced well.

69K is a really good Coberg son that is big middled, strong topped and loose made while maintaining overall eye appeal and balance. His young mother did a great job bringing in this herdsire prospect looking like this which is a testament to the value that she will have in the herd for years to come. Use the pedigree and the genetic potential from Aquila to do the same for you.

Here is a Coberg son out of a big power cow with a long history of being very productive and sound as she is a Z cow. He is a long bodied, thick topped and stylish bull that is a very useful type of herdsire that will go out and produce a solid calf crop every year.

This is a dark red blazed face Coberg son that will check off many boxes for cattlemen looking for a really good, structurally sound, thick made bull. His sire, ZSL Coberg, was one of our high selling bulls a few years ago, going into the really good Ken Gilbert herd at Minburn, AB. When you combine 172K’s mother, one of our best Westcott females, along with the power of Colberg’s mother who is a Capone female you come up with a pedigree that’s second to none if you’re building females to keep in your herd.

Conan 56K is a ZSL Tillman son that was a twin to a heifer but raised on the same cow. This young female did a hell of a job considering she was only a two year old. Look past his lighter weaning weight because of that twin factor and look at this bull now as an individual that has gone on to be a really good bull in a very strong bull pen. This guy will not disappoint his new owner.

Olympus 75K is named just that as he has a 90 pound birth weight out of a first calf heifer yet weaned off at a whopping 1010 pounds. This red baldy, herdsire prospect is one to build a herd around. We found that the Epic sired calves were lighter at birth but they also came approximately 10 days early for us. Once they hit the ground they know how to grow and perform and weigh up in the fall equal to most other herd sire groups. There’s a lot of potential in Carson 25K to do your herd a lot of good.

Here is a dark red, heavy haired bull who is designed for calving ease that has a light birth weight, good performance and style that is easy on the eyes. His sire, Epic, was used exclusively in our heifer pen with really good results. We found the birth weights to be more than acceptable possibly due to the fact that he seems to have a shorter gestation period than most yet the calves grow really well and fit in nicely with the rest of the group. Check out his 88 pound birth weight out of a heifer and his 900 pound weaning weight. This guy could be a candidate for your heifer pen.

Cherry Comfort 163K is exactly the type of bull that we were hoping his sire, MRL Southern Comfort, would produce when we bought him as the lead off red bull at McMillans sale two years ago. He will be noticed for his depth and full body capacity on a moderate frame with more than enough performance. Possibly the biggest bonus to these Southern Comfort sired calves will be in the females that they will produce.

His mother is an almost solid red, flashy Total Value daughter with a nice tidy udder. His grand dam is the oldest cow in the herd who will have her own Payroll son at the top of this years sale.

Spring Lake Simmentals doesn’t sell females and we haven’t for a number of years. We’ve decided to sell some in 2023 and we’re going to sell top end young females. We’re starting with ZSL Sysco 136K and she is a beauty. Her sire, MRL Sysco, needs no introduction as he has produced many of our top end bulls in the last 5 years. This female, Miss Sysco 136K, is a perfect example of what he produces on the female end. She is very feminine made, deep bodied and structurally correct with a good solid foot under her. These Sysco females are among the best in our herd and this young lady will be no different in your herd.

Miss Sysco 16K is a black Sysco female that we are very excited to offer in this year’s sale. She is elegant in her makeup yet is deep bodied and strong topped and is the type of female that will produce top end bull calves. Her mother is a Wolverine female that goes back to ZSL Miss Edition 2X who I consider to be the best black female on the ranch. Miss Epic 44K is a female that has that WOW factor. She too is very feminine in her makeup while being long spined and deep sided. The extra bonus with her is that she is out of a Sysco female which only serves to add to her genetic possibilities. We used WS Epic mainly in our heifer pen because we were told that they come easy and grow. This is a Wheatland Affinity heifer that catches your eye the second that you walk past her. Sharp profiled, deep bodied, thick and hairy are all part of her genetic makeup. The thickness and depth that she carries is very impressive. She comes from a cow with a perfect udder and one of our best milkers. Don’t miss this one at the sale as she too is a hard one to let go.

This is a Crossroads Connected heifer that is a real sweetheart and will create a following no matter where she goes. She is easy to appreciate for her sound design and thickness while maintaining that mother cow look. We appreciate the consistency shown by the Connected females and bulls. We can’t wait to hear and follow the success of this young Spring Lake female.

Where do I start with this bull? Before we bought Sysco we had been using his sire, Capone, fairly heavily and thought why not just buy a Capone son. We feel we hit a homerun with the purchase of MRL Sysco 14D. He has done everything that we could have hoped for. He calves extremely well and the calves grow like weeds posting above average weaning weights and yearling weights. The bull calves have been extremely popular in our sales with their thickness, soundness, hair coats and gentle temperaments. The daughters have emerged as soft made and moderate framed females that have above average udders and milking ability. We have no doubt that a Sysco sired bull in your herd will be one that you will be happy with.

Homo polled, hetero black baldy bull added for the black factor and the money stripe on both black and red progeny. Calves very well and adds performance to his calves.

Another one of our own that was an easy choice to use because he is just so stout and soft made with that thick dark red hair coat that we strive for.

Bought with Bouchard Livestock to add his performance while maintaining above breed average calving ease and the super maternal characteristics that are in his pedigree. His mother is an elite cow in the McMillan herd and we wanted those genetics in ours.

One of our own. Blood red baldy with plenty of nuts, guts and thickness. Adds depth and performance.

We love this bull. He sires calves with moderate birth weights, above average weaning and yearling weights and has a pedigree that takes any guess work out of this bull’s value. Co-owned with the Bieleny’s of Anchor Lazy U, we felt that we needed to keep using his genetics in our herd to add the performance and maternal values that we know are in this bull.

A.I. sire used here because of his thickness and sheer volume while maintaining soundness. His calves come east and perform real well.

Another A.I. sire used here at Spring Lake to add his calving ease and performance in the heifer pen along with his outcross pedigree. We are truly impressed with both the male and female progeny born here.

DELIVERY: $100 off per lot if picked up sale day. Bulls will be kept free of charge for a reasonable length of time, usually until you need them. In rare cases and for convenience reasons, you may be asked to receive your bull(s) when delivering other bulls to your area. All bulls must be insured if going back to the seller’s farm unless arrangements have been made between the buyer and seller . Insurance will be available on sale day.

HEALTH OF BULLS: Spring Lake Simmentals guarantee to sell you a bull that is structurally sound and has passed a semen test done by a licensed veterinarian. Our bulls are raised on a BULLSEYE ration and go through a regiment of herd health shots designed to protect and enhance the longevity of the bulls.

SIGHT UNSEEN PURCHASING: Every year more and more bulls are purchased sight unseen because of the increasing number of repeat buyers. If you wish, contact Eric or Doug with the bulls of your choice and they will discuss them with you. They will then forward you on to one of our very knowledgeable Transcon sale staff members. Then you, the buyer, can get your bull buying done in a very confidential and professional manner.

SEMEN RESERVE: Spring Lake Simmentals reserves the right to collect 100 straws of semen for in herd use only on any bull in our sale. Semen would be collected at our expense and the buyers convenience.

The bull feeding program is built to maximize forage utilization and gut health; they are developed on grass with their moms on a strict mineral program. All the forages are sampled and analyzed to ensure quality forages are used. Once the calves are weaned, they are slowly moved onto a balanced TMR.

The bulls are challenged with a forage-based TMR to help them develop and express their genetic potential. Matching suitable protein sources with proper starch is key to promoting lean muscle growth.
