President’s Message Visionaries of the Angus Breed Welcome! NY Angus sponsors many events throughout the year to promote Angus genetics and the beef industry. Some of the most important parts of what NY Angus sponsors and promotes are events and activities that enhance our youth, such as educational clinics, which have been well received. The bottom line - all of you, our members and followers, make up NY Angus and all of you make these great things happen in our breed statewide, and nationwide. Together, searching for the next best genetics for our herds; together, searching for the next best practices of herd health protocol; and helping each other in various ways. Without even knowing it, we have all become Angus Visionaries, doing our part to be the best beef breed. This Directory & Handbook gives a wide variety of information on our membership and shows what many have to offer. Study this, and use it. Our advertisers deserve a great “Thank You” from us all, as their support has made this book possible. You will notice that the bar has been raised for this edition, as there is much extra helpful information, charts, and cross referencing indexes to find what you need and where you need it within the state. In moving ahead with the times, we have started our mass e-mail list to the membership, we are using our FaceBook page, as well as promoting our website more, www.NY-Angus.com. Our website will host the electronic version of this Directory, as well as our Newsletter. Thanks for reading and utilizing our 2012-2013 NY Angus Membership Directory & Handbook, and for paving the way for our future as Angus breeders and Angus Visionaries. Take care! TULLYFERGUS

Tullyfergus D/D Just Right

3/7/03-5/15/12

14593650

Above is our senior herd sire pictured in his working clothes (the only ones he has) at 7 1/2 years young. His numbers won’t blow you away. He doesn’t rank in the top 5% of anything. He doesn’t have the sexiest, hottest, most current pedigree. He has ancestors whom some would consider trash. We won’t make wild claims about what this bull can do for you and your herd, but Just Right is the best cow making bull we’ve ever bred or owned - period. Semen/Certs $25

New York Angus Association

American Angus Association® Beef Programs Beef Improvement Records Beef Improvement Records is a service provided through performance programs at the American Angus Association to assist purebred and commercial cattle producers in making progress through genetics. The level of participation is in the hands of the producer, but the dynamic performance system has benefits to all users. AHIR® For years, registered Angus breeders have capitalized on progress through performance by enrolling and participating in the Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR) program. AHIR is available for registered Angus breeders who are serious about making genetic progress in their herds through the use of performance records. The records submitted to the Association through AHIR include weights and measures, as well as carcass and ultrasound data. The records are stored along with millions of other records in the Association’s database, the largest beef cattle database in use. The records submitted are utilized in the Angus National Cattle Evaluation to calculate selection tools such as Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) and $Value Indexes. These tools are then provided to Association members and their customers and can be used to make informed breeding decisions. BRS Commercial producers with interest in Angus genetics have the Angus Beef Record Service (BRS) as an opportunity to record performance data at all production levels on their cow herds and calf crops, regardless of breed composition. The program provides a unique opportunity for you to evaluate your commercial cattle productivity by tying to the 40 years of performance data maintained by the American Angus Association. Records are summarized to provide adjusted measures and ratios; however, EPDs are not generated on commercial cattle. Reports are generated by the Association to allow you to evaluate and compare the data, characterize your commercial cow herds, and work toward a higher-quality, more marketable product for your customer. Pathfinder® Program The Pathfinder Angus program was started in 1978 in an effort to identify superior cows in the breed based on their records of performance from Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR). In identifying these superior cows, emphasis was placed on early puberty, breeding and early calving, followed by regularity of calving and above-average performance of the offspring. While outstanding cows can be identified after their first or second calves, the Pathfinder Report requires a minimum of three calves from a cow to determine her regularity of calving and ability to produce superior calves for weaning weight year after year. In addition, an important part of the report is the list of bulls that have sired five or more qualifying females. The Angus Pathfinder Report identifies cows that have excelled in production based on AHIR records of performance. To qualify for the report, a cow must have produced a calf measured through AHIR in the past 18 months. In addition, bulls that have sired a minimum of five or more Pathfinder Cows are listed as Pathfinder Sires in this report. www.NY-ANGUS.com

Every Daywhen Counts it comes to finding open cows. Know as early as 29 days post breeding with the use of DG29™ blood pregnancy test.

“With DG29, you can pregnancy check on a daily basis. You don’t have to herd check on someone else’s schedule. We draw blood on all cows 30 days after breeding.” Matt Manning, Manning Dairy, Lansing, Iowa

CORNELL PROFIT OPTIMIZATION AND EVALUATION PROGRAMS a. New York Feedlot and Carcass Value Discovery Program Purpose: Teach cow/calf producers the value of their calves based on performance in the feedlot and on through the packing plant. Calves are accepted in November or June and fed till their most optimal profit potential.

b. Cornell Beef Replacement Sale Purpose: Provide a diversified market for your pregnant commercial or pure bred cattle. Setting the Standard

So, what make the CAB brand stand above the rest? Since there are dozens of “Angus” programs out there, including 40 other USDA-certified, we’d like to clarify that.

Live Animal Identification Step 1

Consistent Sizing 4 10- to 16-square-inch ribeye area

Phenotypic: Predominantly (51%) solid black hair coat OR Genotypic: AngusSource® program enroll- 5 Less than 1,000-pound hot carcass ment weight AngusSource®, USDA-approved as a process Verified Program (PVP) since fall 6 2005, documents source and group age Less than 1-inch fat thickness while ensuring cattle have a minimum of 50% Angus genetics. Eligible cattle must be sired by a registered Angus bull Quality Appearance and and enrolled by the ranch of origin with month, day and year of birth for the oldest Tenderness calf in the group. For more information, 7 visit www.angussource.com. Superior muscling (restricts dairy influence) Carcass Specifications This screens out the influence of dairyStep 2 type cattle to maintain consistent yields and plate presentation. Marbling 1 Modest or higher marbling That qualifies a carcass for average Choice and ensures superior flavor and juiciness. Few other branded programs have this level of marbling, and it is the single largest barrier to CAB acceptance. 2 Medium or fine marbling texture Many small flecks of fat, as opposed to fewer, larger and coarser characteristics. Smaller flecks ensure consistent flavor and juiciness in each bite.

Maturity 3 “A” maturity for each, lean and skeletal characteristics All CAB carcasses are of “A” maturity, which is typically less than 30 months of age. Beef from younger animals is more tender than that from older animals. 64

8 Practically free of capillary rupture Limiting internal hemorrhaging in beef provides a more attractive meat case display. 9 No dark cutters Usually only a problem in animals that are stressed prior to harvest and caused by a drop in muscle glycogen levels, the beef appears dark brown to purplish and is not appealing to consumers. 10 No neck hump exceeding 2 inches This limits the influence of bos indicus (Brahman-type) cattle to address tenderness concerns. FRAME SCORE

Frame score is a convenient way of describing the skeletal size of cattle. With appropriate height growth curves, most animals should maintain the same frame score throughout their life, while their actual height increases with age. This allows one frame score value to be used regardless of when the animal was evaluated. However, the frame score will change for animals that mature earlier or later compared with average animals. The hip height measurement should be taken at a point directly over the hip bones (hooks) with the animal standing on a level surface.

The Beef Checkoff

Complying with the $1 Beef Checkoff

The Beef Checkoff law goes into effect every time cattle are sold. This includes purebred sales and private treaty sales on the farm. The law requires that a dollar per head is withheld and remitted to the New York Beef Industry Council.

Private Treaty Sales Q & A What is Private Treaty? Sales that involve one producer selling cattle to another producer or direct to consumers. Who pays the $1/head? The $1 deducted from the selling price of the animal. The seller deducts and remits the $1 on private treaty sales. Is the $1 due on cattle sold for freezer trade? Yes. If you market cattle in the form of beef or beef products to consumers, restaurants, etc. you are required to remit the $1/head assessment. Cattle and calves for personal consumption by the producer and his family are not assessed. Is there a form to use when remitting the checkoff? The Private Treaty form should be completed and sent with your remittance. Forms are available by calling the NYBIC at 1-800-292-6922 or online at www.nybeef.org. Where do I send the money? In NYS the checkoff assessment should be sent to the New York Beef Industry Council. Collections are sent directly to a lockbox and the address is on the Private Treaty Form. What is meant by the “state of origin on the Private Treaty Form? The state the cattle were raised in. Use the form on page 75 of the New York Angus Association directory to remit the $1 Checkoff on your cattle sold through private treaty sales.

If you have any questions about the Checkoff, contact New York Beef Industry Council cgillis@nybeef.org or 1-800-292-6922 74

What is BQA? Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) is a national program that provides guidelines for beef cattle production. It is a combination of technology, common sense, a concern for animal well-being, and a consumer oriented production system. It focuses producers’ attention on management practices that influence the safety, wholesomeness and quality of beef. The program is producer initiated, voluntary and locally led. In NYS it is coordinated through a combined effort of the New York Beef Industry and Cornell University. Who should be certified? All individuals who have the opportunity to influence the quality of cattle including owners, farm workers, junior producers, animal science students and allied industry partners. Steps for BQA Certification 3 Attend a BQA classroom training & complete the BQA test. 3 Participate in a chute-side training. 3 Establish a Veterinary/Client/Patient Relationship (VCPR). 3 Sign the BQA Contract. To enroll in the NY BQA program contact: Carol Gillis, NY Beef Industry Council cgillis@nybeef.org or call 800.292.6922 or Mike Baker, Cornell Beef Specialist mbj28@cornell.edu or call 607-255-5923

A view from the tractor seat... It is finally time to bale hay in western New York. The weather is cooperating so far. Our crops look good; we have had a pretty nice year so far. As I ride around this field with our round baler swallowing up those windrows I cannot help but think about the way we baled hay when I was a kid. I have some fond memories, but I don’t wish to ever go back to those ways again. Picking up those 70 lb. bales and trying to throw them up on the wagon as the youngest boy in the family drove the tractor back and forth across the field until the bales were all loaded and headed for the barn. I can remember when my dad bought the first baler in our neighborhood that had a hay chute that let the bales push each other right up on the wagon. We thought this was the greatest invention of all time, but about two years later our neighbor bought a new baler that actually kicked the bales onto the wagon with nobody even on the wagon. I figured it would never get any better than that. You still had to unload them and pile them in the haymow. We have not had a small square bale of hay on our farm for over ten years now, not that I miss them, but I can only imagine how the next generation of farmers will harvest their hay to feed the cows. Just think, instead of sweating on a hot June day making hay when the sun shines, you may be able to make hay in your air conditioned office with the stroke of your computer key. Thanks for reading Paul PS: Sometimes I like working with cows instead of people because if you get mad at them you can kill them and eat them. 78
