EPD / EPD % Ranking within breed

EPDs

Expected Progeny Difference (EPDs) is the best estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for a particular trait. It takes into account the animals’ own performance compared with its contemporaries and the performance of its relatives compared against their contemporaries.

Birth Weight (BW) EPD predicts calf size and calving ease.

Weaning Weight (WW) EPD predicts preweaning growth potential.

Yearling Weight (YW) EPD predicts overall growth potential. Milk EPD predicts the maternal contribution to weaning weight of the calf through milk production, behavior, immunity and other maternal environmental factors.

Scrotal Circumference (SC) EPD predicts not only testicular size of male progeny but also daughters onset of puberty.

Breed Back (BB) EPD explains the percentage of daughters that are expected to breed back in the first breeding season after having their first calf. This EPD adds to the suite of fertility traits to predict production ability of cows in your herd. We know the hardest time in a cow’s life to breed is for her second calf, while nursing her first. This EPD focuses specifically on that breeding opportunity. BB is also highly correlated to later in life metrics like Stayability and NC.

Number of Calves (NC) EPD is a prediction of long term producing ability of an animal’s daughters. This EPD is expressed simply as the number of calves expected in a lifetime. A larger number depicts more calves born over the lifetime of those daughters. This EPD is highly correlated with Stayability, but much easier to explain the true economic benefits.

Terminal Index (TERM) combines birth weight, weaning weight, milk production, post wean gain, bulls with a +2 index are two standard deviations above the average. Higher numbers are superior to low numbers.

Fertility Index (FERT) combines heifer pregnancy, stayability, days to first calving, mature cow weight, and back fat EPDs into a single number. The index is expressed as s standard deviation from the breed average, meaning that bulls with a +2 index are two standard deviations above the average. Higher numbers are superior to low numbers.

ULTRASOUND EPDs

Ribeye Area (REA) EPD predicts total muscle.

Intramuscular Fat (IMF) EPD predicts % of intramuscular fat which is highly correlated to marbling.

*REA and FT are primary components of USDA YG and marbling is the primary component of USDA QG.

Epd Percentile Rankings

Individual ranking relative to the entire breed population on a specific trait, represented in the form of a percentage, with 1% being best and 99% being worst.

There will be no sophomore slump in this year’s offering from Phillips Ranch. This year’s sale is led off by none other than the widely known 30G3 Never Surrender daughter whose influence on the Phillips Ranch and Quail Valley programs is undeniable. Just last year in our inaugural female sale this direct daughter of T3 MS Three D 30D generated a total of $57,000 with the choice of Big Lake 111F4 daughters that was purchased by Wiley Ranch and the right to flush the Never Surrender daughter who ranks in the top 1% for WW, YW and REA was selected by Brent Smith. Rarely will you find a donor with this much profit generating proof offered at this age. This 4-year-old is the type that puts all the pieces together and can elevate any program to a new level with just a single calf crop. Don’t miss the fancy heifer at her side sired by Perfect Fit of Salacoa 468G57, just another example of what this tremendous cow can do.

This full sister to Cold Creek Lady Passport 1912C is a female that has quietly made her mark on the program here at Phillips Ranch along with Great Mark Western herd. Her balanced EPD profile and Ultrablack pedigree allows for plenty of mating flexibility. Study this female’s phenotype and you see that she provides correctness starting at the ground. She has a great udder design, and her angularity is nothing short of striking from the side. Her flush mate sister, a household name with the breed, now roams the pastures at Bill Austin’s and has a track record of producing highly sought after progeny that commands top dollar through the sale ring with a daughter recently bringing $45,000. 1912C1 has that same profit generating potential. You’ll see her Empire son offered this fall and there is little doubt he will be a sale day favorite this coming October.

We wanted to bring something special to this sale, so here’s an opportunity to own 10X’s finest daughter to date. 10E20 has been a stand out since birth, and one we have worked in our ET program. She is a half sister to the dam of the very popular Monument 10D7, along with many others that stem directly from 10X. She posts excellent growth and carcass numbers, along with a phenotype that is easy on the eyes. She is moderate framed, big middled, long spined, with a perfect udder. She has a herd sire prospect by her side that will gain lots of attention sale day. We have ET calves on the ground, and embryos in the tank. We could write a book on how this great female will impact our program in the years to come. Take advantage to own one of the greatest 10’s ever made.

Selling full possession and interest in both cow and calf. AV is retaining the right to 1 IVF collection of at least 6 embryos.

LOT 5 | OAKS MS PASSPORT 99C67

This female might have been the buy of the year last spring. It was stated right there in the footnote this cow was about to be famous and they were right. This Passport daughter is the kind of female you spot from across the pasture and drive directly over to see every time you check cows. Her angular yet powerful design is so hard to find. It is no surprise that she produced the PRB Big Deal 99J4 bull that is doing work at Whitley Brangus Farms in North Carolina and his full brother PRB Lake Effects 99J2 who is roaming the pastures at Drury’s in Alabama. Take this opportunity to flush one of the can’t miss cows in the breed today.
