20 years...... And this marks my 10th year of being a part of the Annual All Black Bull Sale. It is incredible what we have seen in the last 10 years and is very remarkable what we are seeing now in the cattle industry. In the last few years, we have seen the market climb every fall and then continue to get stronger into the spring followed by an even higher fall. The last few years, prices got higher just to match input costs, but now I strongly feel we are way beyond meeting input costs. As we all try to watch these costs, sometimes buying the best bull we can for our operation can be our best return on our money.
As always, we strive to raise cattle with depth, width, length, and eye appeal. We don't chase extremes or worry about using the newest genetics, instead we focus on proven predictable genetics. If we do use newer genetics, as we are AIing more, we focus on there being very proven and highly sought after cows in the pedigree. It is our goal to produce cattle that can work as well in our customers pastures as they do in ours. We have heavily relied on creating our own proven sires to build a uniform cowherd - this has allowed us to introduce some newer proven genetics to better accomodate our customers, while not jeopardizing our cowherd's characteristics that has kept so many repeat customers over the years.
We have responsibly fed these bulls to look their best come sale day, yet not compromise their futures. The bulls have been backgrounded on pellets at 1% of their bodyweight after weaning until they go to grass in May. They then graze a sanfoin/cicer milkvetch blend for the summer and come home in September to a diet of free choice hay and pellets. The bulls continue pellets at 1% of their bodyweight until they reach 14lbs of pellets. We encourage everyone to come and look at the bulls prior to sale day!
Over the past couple of years Jim J Henderson has toured our herd extensively and would be happy to answer any questions regarding this years sale bulls or females in the herd. 403-740-9270

We had acow get set to AI that we never intended on AI'ing, we thought it would be neat to try a Brangus bull. We never had the heart to cut him at branding or before we went to grass. He's just stuck around and kept growing. He has lots of growth and lots of hair. Note that his calves will only be 1/8 Brahman.
Welcome to our 20th Annual All Black Bull Sale! All aspects of the livestock industry look promising for the next several years. Anyone who went through the BSE years would ever have imagined the prices we are receiving today. All signs indicate this will continue for several years to come. Remember we are getting paid by the pound for our calves or yearlings so selecting a top-notch bull from proven genetics is relatively inexpensive and will pay off dividends in the long run.
Once again, this year’s offerings are from the younger cows and the older proven elite cows that have stood the test of time. So, if you’re looking at retaining heifers for rebuilding or increasing your herd, there is longevity here. With that being said, the group of bulls are top tier and from all great maternal lines. We select sires for a balance of performance, calving ease, fleshing ability and strong maternal traits. This fall we weaned October 3rd. We received ample rain in May and June, then it turned the tap off in July and there was no rain for the rest of the summer. July also brought scorching heat, and the smoke moved in from the wild fires making it a challenge to get bumper hay crops wrapped up. It was fortunate we had the earlier moisture because the grass grew exceptionally well and carried the pastures until we got rain later in the fall. The pastures rebounded and carried us through till snowfall. The bulls have been fed Masterfeeds Bull ration and free choice hay. They have been vaccinated spring and preweaning with Bovi-Shield BVD One Shot vaccine and Inforce 3 to aid in the prevention of respiratory issues. Ranch life continues to keep us busy and is a great way of life. We are so fortunate to have children and grandchildren who love this as well. Chris continues to drive truck in the oilfield around Smiley and Jenna is busy at home with their 3 girls – Madison in Grade 8, Jordynn in Grade 7 and Kaycee in Grade 3. The girls are in Horse 4-H and other various school activities. They enjoy coming to Meadow Lake to help with branding, hauling cows, weighing, and other ranch activities. Lacey and Blair are busier than ever with 2 little girls. Our son Sheldon and Lori and family have blessed us with 2 great grandchildren!
The 2024 Saskatchewan Angus Tour was another great event to attend. Once again, I was invited along with Alliance Genetics who takes a group of breeders to the bull studs in Billings, Montana. We did a 4 day tour and it was great to see all the new bulls and network with other breeders.
Videos will be available on the DLMS website along with the catalogue. Anyone interested in viewing the bulls can stop by anytime for a visit – coffee is always on. Thank you to all our past buyers and we look forward to seeing you again this year.

In the fall of 2022 we purchased 35K from Miller Wilson Angus as a bull calf. We had seen pictures of him as a month old calf and as an 8 month old calf - when we saw him in person he did not disappoint. He was very easy to appreciate for his width and depth, especially to follow all that up with being a heifer's 1st calf. Having his 2nd calf crop hitting the ground this year, he has not disappointed us one bit.

A very powerful bull with great neck extension and tons of muscle. It’s very seldom you find a heifer bull of this magnitude with a 74lb birthweight. 7M’s granddam and greatdam are both working at Wishbone Cattle – lots of maternal strength and longevity. He’s had that herdbull look all summer – his mother did a great job on her 1st calf. As you can see by the pictures, he always catches your eye across the pen.
Another long, deep Accomplishment calf. This is our first calf crop from the Accomplishment bull I sourced when visiting the Origen Bull Stud in Billings – I’m very pleased with the progeny, male or female. Accomplishment was only used as a heifer bull but he would breed well either way and I may be trying some cows in the future.

A very stretchy, smooth-made bull with ample thickness. His granddam was quite moderate and had a beautiful udder – his dam has a little more frame being out of the PayRaise 70F bull.

The last calf out of the OCC Emblazon 854E cow, who was 16 years old. Lots of our repeat customers would have or have had maternal brothers to this guy - Robert Lavallee, Lee Cockrum, Parsonage's, Archie Kwasniuk, Brian & Lisa Coutts..

Another sure-fire calving ease bull backed by the bottom side of his pedigree. He still has adequate performance to use if you wanted to go on cows as well.
47A has earned her spot in the donor pen this year - she'll be headed to Davis Rairdan come spring and we're excited to get some embryos in the tank out of her so she can continue her positive influence on the herd for years to come. She is a long, broody, feminine female that caught many visitors eyes on the 2021 Summer Angus Tour we hosted. She has a picture-perfect udder with small, uniform teats and great suspension. 47A is as sound as a 4 year old cow. She's one of those cows you love to show-off and anticipate her mating every year!
You choose the sire of your choice to mate 47A to - choose a calving ease bull & create some awesome heifer bulls or choose a power bull and have the backing of a great maternal bloodline. Guaranteeing 6 embryos with an open top.

This year we're including commercial females as a part of our sale. These heifers are influenced by Wishbone Cattle Co and Nesset Lake Angus genetics - we are proud to be able to showcase some of our customers breeding programs. The heifers will sell in uniform packages with the option of gate-run five or more. All are replacement quality females. All females will have been palpated for breeding soundness prior to sale day.
Kyle & Leah run a large herd of commercial Black Angus cows. These cows run in rough country and Kyle is very harsh when it comes to culling for fertility. These heifers will be the most condensed offering of our genetics. Kyle has bought the front-end of the bulls at the sale for the last 10+ years.
James & Rachelle have a very nice set of Angus cows that raise a very uniform set of calves every year - they take a lot of pride in their cows. James is the Service Manager at Lazar Equipment and Rachelle is the face behind Vast Wildnerness Clothing Company. While staying busy with a young family they also make 4000-6000 bales a year.
Jarrid & Rochelle are a young ocuple who just got married last summer. Jarid has worked for Meadow Lake Livestock Sales since 2017 and in 2019 took over the role of yard foreman. They acquired another herd of cows last fall, so he won't be around the market as much as previous years. We miss having him around but appreciate when he can come. Jarrid has been a big help at home too whether it's picturing bulls, branding calves or tinning a roof.
Richard & Kolten run a nice set of Black cows just north of Glaslyn. They are excellent stockmen that do a great job of feeding and looking after cattle. This is our (Wishbone) 3rd winter of working with them on getting commercial cows and feeder cattle fed at their place.
