Coyote Flats Charolais Bull Sale - Coaldale, AB

Page 1

Welcome to our 10th annual bull sale! It is hard to believe that it’s been 10 years already, but even harder to believe we have been breeding Charolais cattle for 35 years. We have come a long way from buying our first 9 cows in the fall of 1989. It is also interesting looking back at the pictures of that time and admiring how far the breed has come. We have gone from tall, bigger boned bulls to smaller framed, big middled easier calving bulls that are highly sought after. The Charolais calves continue to be in high demand again this fall. It’s a great feeling to have back-to-back years of excellent calf prices and phenomenal cull cow and bull prices. I am sure some of you were able to sell your cull bull for close to what you paid for it. On top of all that, great news, as most of us enjoyed an excellent year of grass with a plentiful hay crop. There is a lot of optimism in the cattle industry and for good reason. It appears that we should be in line for another good year of prices next year with the cow numbers not growing yet.

This year’s group of bulls is as consistent as ever. As always, we have 2 completely different breeding groups for our yearling and 2-year-old programs. Yearling bulls are born from January to early March and the 2-year-old program calves from late April to early July. We have the variety you will be looking for, whether it’s a power bull or a heifer bull, we can fill your needs. If you are unable to attend or would prefer that we pick out a bull for you, Cody, Christopher or I would be more than willing to help out. Please don’t hesitate to contact one of us to discuss your needs.

Lastly, be sure to check out our “Win-Win” program. It’s always exciting to buy calves from our customers and have the opportunity to see how our genetics perform in the feedlot. It’s great to have customers show faith in our program by buying bulls yearly from us and be able to reward them by buying their calves back and showing faith in their program. We realize that selling directly to us is not an option that everyone prefers, so if you let us know when and where you are selling your calves, we will do our best to support you at your sale.

Thanks

Coyote Flats

We believe in our bulls! We believe in supporting our bull customers, and the feeding ability that calves sired by our bulls have. That is why every bull sold in our sale comes with a bid on our customers calves in the fall.

The Win-Win Program was developed because we want to develop a partnership with our customers in the cattle business. A successful partnership must benefit both parties, and we believe that the Win-Win Program allows for successful partnerships to be developed.

You Win

• Excellent sale price: We pay top dollar for the calves that enter our feedlot. We can also offer to contract your calves during the summer months.

• Less stress: On the day you wean your calves, you already know your price and don’t have to worry about what price you are going to get, or what the weather is going to do. No worries about calves getting cut out because of a minor problem or off colour. We are also flexible on delivery times and dates.

• Less shrink: We have a government inspected scale at our facility. The calves are weighed on the truck and the shrink is determined on a sliding scale based on distance from our feedlot.

• No sales commission: All that you pay for is the brand inspection and the trucking to get your calves to our feedlot.

• Pride: You can come back to the feedlot and have a look at how your calves are doing and developing.

We Win

• Healthier calves: Calves are less stressed, therefor, they stay healthier.

• Performance: We get large groups of calves that packers are looking for and we know they will perform and yield among the best in the industry.

• Management: We can track performance of our different bloodlines from weaning to slaughter. We are also able to help with vaccination decisions so we can vaccinate the calves the same way when they arrive at the feedlot.

• Feedback: We can give you feedback on the performance and health of your calves.

First and foremost, we would like to welcome you to the 10th Annual Coyote Flats Charolais Bull Sale. To celebrate the 10th edition of their sale, Coyote Flats Charolais has put together their strongest, consistent, quality offering of Yearling and Two-Year Old Charolais bulls to date.

As we sit here writing this welcome letter for their 10th Annual Bull Sale, it leaves us feeling a bit nostalgic. We have been working with the Coyote Flats Charolais program for a decade now ourselves, and what a true honour it has been. From starting out as a herdsman for their Charolais cow herd, to progressing and working in the sales management aspect, it has been rewarding to see the development of their bull sale over the last 10 years. It feels like yesterday when the nerves of hosting their first bull sale on the farm was felt throughout the crew, as we took the leap and changed the way the bull pen was marketed. Congratulations to the Coyote Flats Charolais crew, through all the market highs and lows and uncertainties in the decisions that were made, we are celebrating 10, what an accomplishment!

To say that both the yearling and two-year old bull pens are exciting is a vast understatement! From the genetic outcross bulls offered, sired by LT Justified 1528 PLD and LT Renegade 0838 PLD ET, to the breed impacting sires Elder’s Vexour 8042F, HVA High Tide 83F and MAIN Highwood 60H, that have worked and continue to produce those performance, calving ease bulls, there is certainly something for every program in this offering. The quality of the pen is something that should not be overlooked. This program continues to progress forward, year after year, with the new genetics that they are bringing in, to offer that genetic diversity and keep things fresh for their repeat bull customers.

Please join us on sale day, in person to enjoy the company of fellow cattle producers and partake in the renowned Coyote Flats Charolais hospitality, or online through DLMS. Your support and interest in the bulls is always appreciated. If you cannot be in attendance online or in person, but wish to participate over the phone or by leaving a bid on your bull(s) of choice, please do not hesitate to contact Mark, Cody, Christopher, any of the sale staff or I listed in the catalogue. We would be happy to answer any questions you have about the bulls featured in the offering, or assist you in sourcing bulls that would work for your program. Buy with confidence, as the Coyote Flats Charolais program stands behind their product, so much so that they offer their Win-Win program to build those relationships in the industry and support their customers back.

Sincerely,

FROM CARGILL ANIMAL NUTRITION

Welcome to the 10th Annual Coyote Flats Charolais Bull Sale. Every year, we sit down with the Lohues family and discuss the nutrition program we are going to put forward for these bulls. The Lohues Family always insists on developing a bull in a safe and responsible manner in order to create an animal that will sustain his soundness for multiple breeding seasons. We have formulated a balanced ration that meets growth curve requirements necessary for proper breeding maturation, that allows for superior genetics to be passed on.

These bulls have been raised on a chelated mineral program that was designed to enhance immunity, semen quality and strong foot structure. Coyote Flats is committed to their customers through the feeder cattle buyback program, with a vested interest in raising a quality product for everyone involved. It’s very seldom that you run into a purebred operation that is as dedicated to the industry like Coyote Flats. If you have any questions around the rations don’t hesitate to call (403)-634-5590.

Welcome Welcome

FROM CATTLE HEALTH MANAGEMENT

As a veterinarian with Cattle Health Management, I have been honoured to work with Coyote Flats Charolais for most of my 30-year career. This is a family-run organization comprised of wonderful people with a great deal of integrity to their customers, their neighbors and the entire beef industry. Mark is very conscientious about taking care of the details with respect to the health and nutrition of the cattle on the farm and those that are to be sold. Vaccinations are carried out in a timely manner to help prevent disease in the individual animals, as well as in the calves that are raised. All cows receive a 5-way (IBR, PI3, BRSV, BVD Type I & II) modified live virus vaccine pre-breeding to protect the fetus from infection with IBR or BVD. This program is started while the cows are still calves, so all mature cows have received at least 2 doses of the 5-way viral before first conception and then annually pre-breeding after that. When the calves are born, they are initially given an intranasal IBR, PI3, BRSV and an intranasal Mannheimia hemolytica and Pasteurella multocida for protection against respiratory illness. This is repeated at branding time to continue the protection provided by this product, as well as an 8-way Clostridial vaccine that also contains Histophilus somni. The calves are boosted with a 5-way viral and the 8-way Clostridial vaccine at weaning time and then the heifers are given the 5-way viral pre-breeding. This program provides maximum protection for the calves against respiratory disease and protects the fetus from BVD infection and abortion from these viruses.

The bull calves go through this vaccination program as well, and before leaving the farm they also receive Fusogard and the booster for protection against footrot during the breeding season.

Coyote Flats Charolais has a comprehensive herd health program and for most of their history, they have invited the Cattle Health Management to work closely with them in all aspects of their cattle operation. This involves everything from pregnancy diagnosis, breeding soundness evaluation of the bulls, and regular herd health visits for examinations of sick animals, and health training purposes. We are involved in the feedlot aspect of this farm and in the past, many of the calves that have been inducted into the feedlot have been purchased from producers that have sourced their bulls from Coyote Flats Charolais. This close working relationship has proven beneficial for the cow/calf producer as well as Coyote Flats Charolais. The Lohues family is always interested in developing more of these relationships with producers that are purchasing bulls. They would welcome any inquiries about providing calves for sale to the Coyote Flats Charolais feedlot, and vaccination and health protocols for the cows and calves from these herds.

It has been a privilege to work closely with Coyote Flats Charolais in all aspects of cattle health.

Sincerely,

Tribute to Ben Stroeve

Shortly after our last bull sale, I lost my mentor in the Charolais breed. Ben passed away December 19th, 2023. Thankfully I was able to share with him our sale results from last year as it was our best sale to date. He was extremely happy for us, and you could see that he was also very proud. Not only was he my mentor, he was also my uncle and like a second father to me. I worked for Ben for a few years, and he is the reason we are in the Charolais breed. He gave George and I our start by selling us 9 cows in the fall of 1989. He was a fantastic teacher and role model, with a great attitude and always had a positive outlook on life. I truly miss his wonderful smile and his voice, and the way he greeted me on the phone or in person. It was a very enthusiastic “Hi Mark”! He was a person that always made time for the people around him. Without a doubt, his favourite thing about a bull sale or cattle show was pulling out a bottle of whiskey and having a drink with people. You didn’t have to talk about cattle, it could be about anything, he just really enjoyed getting to know people. He is greatly missed.
