Welcome to another edition of the Jewels Of The Prairie Female sale! Alongside our family, we run a cow/calf operation with 550 cows while backgrounding all our own calves just south of Virden MB. With 95% of the herd being commercial cows we have seen first hand the qualities most important to this industry and have strived to create a cow herd evident of that. Strong maternal instincts, clean udders, easy fleshing and longevity are top priority here. We were once told that a purebred cow is of no genetic value if she can not outperform any other cow in the same environment, which is why our purebreds run alongside the rest of the herd year round. These cows are truly “ranch-raised” which has created some extremely easy doing offspring which can perform in any conditions. This set of heifers comes from the heart of the herd and we hope you enjoy them! We are always open to visitors so feel free to stop by and check out these ladies anytime.

This heifer was a standout all summer on pasture and every time we see her we wonder why we are letting her go. A deep bodied, wide topped and easy fleshing heifer that’s smooth on her feet and carries herself very well. Her dam is very typical of the Julia cow family which makes it no surprise that she knocked it out of the park as a first calver. This heifer will check off all the boxes!

A very flashy female that is correctly made with her wide top, deep body with a little extra length and a very smooth front shoulder and feminine head. Maid 7C has been a staple in our herd and although she rarely raises heifers, when she does she sure raises them right! She is an extremely easy keeper with great feet and a very nice udder. Here’s a heifer that could benefit any herd!
Hello fellow cattle producers! After our third Jewels of the Prairie sale concludes 2024 will soon be over. It was a busy summer for Mosside, regretfully too busy in fact to put together a show string. Had we found the time, our two consignments in this year’s sale would have been leading the way for us. New this year, we are offering an incentive for juniors! Should you purchase one of our heifers and hang a red ribbon at your 4H achievement or at one show in 2025, we will hand you $250 of Mosside money.
Hope to see you at the sale!

Here is an eye catching cherry red heifer that has been a standout in our replacement pen. She has impressive natural thickness, depth of body and tons of middle. Her dam has an immaculate udder and had a successful run on the show circuit. 14M is one of the first daughters sired by JSF Ronan to sell in Canada and she comes with a pedigree full of greats such as Hill Haven Fire Storm and ACC Candy’s Winegum. Juniors, take a good look at this one as she would make an excellent show heifer!

Clean fronted, long bodied, and sound on the move just like her sire Defender. We had planned to retain 187M but we bred her dam back the same way and decided to offer her for your consideration! This heifer’s pedigree packed with maternal powerhouses takes guesswork out of the equation. Being white, she will add chrome to her calves and should produce those highly sought after blue roans if bred black!
Uphill Shorthorns is a 3rd generation herd which originated when my grandfather bought cattle that had been brought in from Britain to be sold for flood relief in Winnipeg in the late 1940’s to 50’s. I began building my herd in 1997 when I moved to the farm and have added genetics over the years from various herds. Herd bulls have been purchased in Canada and the United States and AI sires used as well. We strive for optimum performance without sacrificing body depth and thickness. The females need to be feminine and productive with strong feet and udders to remain in the herd. We try to maintain calving ease but don’t push the envelope too hard and lose all of the performance. We welcome your appraisal of our entries to this years Jewels sale.

Sylvia is a first calf out of a very good Waukaru Picasso 9113 daughter. These Picasso daughters are maturing into wonderful brood cows with good depth and femininity along with hip to ensure calving ease. The Royalty 8H bull is no longer here so there will not be many daughters available.

WAUKARU PICASSO 8113
This young female is sure to turn heads sale day with her femininity and color along with a body makeup to hit the show ring. Her sire was kept to continue the Picasso lineage in our herd and he left some very nice calves. Her HC Bluebook dam is a never miss female who has raised some outstanding calves and being a member of the Athena cow line ensures her breeding abilities. This girl will definitely show and then go on to be a brood cow to be proud of.

She has a near perfect udder and milks well. Elsie is moderate in frame with exceptional length and depth of body with a wide top and a great hip. It is not an easy decision to part with this one, our loss is going to be someone’s gain for sure. BredtoGlenfordDeNiro42Ktocalve February/March2025.

Welcome to the 3rd Annual Jewels of the Prairie sale! This year we are offering up a pair of maternal sisters out of our Uphill Jessie 22E. With many of her daughters retained, Jessie 22E has become the most consistently producing female in our shorthorn herd. She has been up and down the show road many times and has the perfect disposition. These girls’ pedigrees are loaded with greats; Saskvalley Yesterday, Saskvalley Bonanza, Bell M Foreman, Bell M Debate, Muridale Goose, Muridale Robert & Bell M Sketchers to name a few. This little darlin’ came right out of the keeper heifers. 17M was a class winner at AgEx and is turning into a favourite, the more I work with her the harder it will be to let her go. Her sire had many friends at AgEx, where he was slapped Reserve Grand Champion Bull. She is the first calf sired by Apparition 2K to be offered for sale, and we think she’s a good one. If purchased by a junior member, we would like to offer $250 to the junior for a class winner, and an additional $500 if the heifer takes home the grand champion banner at their local 4-H show and any other junior show they attend in 2025.

BIRDTAIL Shorthorns
Welcome to the 3rd annual Jewels of the Prairie sale! We are pleased to offer 3 bred heifers for your consideration. Our breeding program has focused on instilling quality genetics with these major components: great feet, udders, docility and easy-fleshing. These heifers are bred to go out and work for you. All 3 spent the summer on our rugged pastures and came home looking really good mid October. Photos taken late September on pasture. We would also like to introduce our daughter Kerry and her husband Jeremy Pilkey to the Jewels sale. They operate JK Angus and have been crossbreeding Shorthorns and Angus for quite awhile with great results. They are offering a pair of eye-catching blue roans.
BIRDTAIL ANNE 80L
This deep red heifer is out of one of our very first cow lines and a Birdtail Anne has been consigned for all three Jewel sales. 80L exhibits a beautiful front end, good length and is an overall balanced package. She is an extremely docile female and ready to raise quality shorthorns for your program. Her sire is Birdtail Gene, a roan son of Saskvalley Copyright.
