WELCOME TO OUR SALE Welcome to the LaBatte Simmentals 44th Annual Spring Bull and Female Sale, Friday, March 1, 2024 at Johnstone Auction Mart, 4 miles west of Moose Jaw on #1 highway, north side of the highway, big orange building. How time flies, it seems we just had out last Bull sale and here we are again making a catalogue. My mom and dad, when they got older, I remember them saying how time goes by so fast, now I understand what they meant. We would like to thank again all the bidders and buyers from our past sales, your continued support and effort to attend our sales is very much appreciated. Some of you have become life long friends. We welcome our new customers too; may your bulls work well for you and any problems let me know or Kyron know. We both think this year addition of our bulls, is one of the best ever, whether you are looking for black, red or fullblood bulls we think there is one that will work for you in this year’s offering. I would also like to personally thank our team at home. They are a huge part of any success that we’ve had in the Simmental breed. Firstly, I’d like to thank Wade Lund, who was with us for over 22 years. He was a big part of the success we had in those years. Wade and his wife, Lhei, have moved to Weyburn, and are both working at new jobs there. Wade is responsible for a lot of the bulls and heifers in the sale as he was the AI man. Also like to thank Dale Ehrhardt, our night watchman, who is now 72 years young, he’s been with us for many years calving out cows during the night. He is dedicated and reliable at his job. Cole McHattie started with us almost two years ago and has become a good employee and works very well with the cattle side of our operation. And we have a new employee, starting in January 2024, Darlene Scriber of Lloydminster area. She has tons of experience calving cows, AI’ing and machine skills. She’s going to be a very important addition to LaBatte Simmentals as we already really appreciate her skills and work ethic. Lastly but most importantly, our family, my wife Brenda, our son Lynlee and his wife Hayley and their boys Brodyn, Jory and Zayne. Our granddaughters now own a couple cows here and the oldest, Emry was a big help at weaning time. Family is very important and we are lucky to have a good one. From Brenda and I’s kids, Lynlee and Janalee to their spouses, Hayley and Tim, to our grandchildren, Brodyn, Jory and Zayne, Emry, Jenna and Sierra, we are so thankful. Our offering this year again consists of red, black and fullblood bulls and 15 top quality open heifers. Our red pen we think is one of the strongest sets ever, the blacks are headlined by RF Caliber, the hottest black bull in the industry now and there is a great set of fullblood bulls, both polled and horned. The Manske family will again be guest consignors with 15-20 red and black bulls in the sale. Word has it that it’s there best set yet. There is one big change this year as Bohrson Marketing Services will be taking over full management of our sale. We would like to thank Transcon Livestock, Jay Good, Darren Paget, Glen Norton and recently Cody Coupland for their many years of professional help at our sale. It was greatly appreciated. Health: All bulls will be scrotal measured and palpated. Bulls over 12 months of age at time of testing will be semen tested. Bulls under 12 months of age at time of testing will be semen tested prior to delivery. Weights will be posted sale day. All bulls and heifers were given Cattlemaster 4, Somnustar PH and Fortress 7 in June and boostered with same in September. All were treated with Ivomec Pour-on in September and January. Delivery: At the buyer’s option and risk, LaBatte Simmentals and East Poplar Simmentals will take the purchaser’s bulls home, feed them under their management and deliver them FREE anywhere in the prairie provinces to your nearest central location. We will do our utmost to deliver them right to your yard. Delivery will take place between April and the middle of May. For bull buyers outside the prairie provinces, LaBatte Simmentals and East Poplar Simmentals will work with you to help coordinate delivery. The bulls are the property of the buyer as soon as they are sold. Therefore, buyers must insure their animals for the time they are at LaBatte Simmentals and East Poplar Simmentals. The heifers will be delivered as soon as possible after the sale. We couldn’t be happier with the Top Tier progeny. He’s done a great job of adding calving ease, blaze face and quality in the calf crops, both Bulls and Heifers. We’re having our 4th year of Top Tier calves this spring and will continue to use him in the future. He calves great, but also adds shape and muscle to his calves. His daughters are now in production and we are very happy with them, udder quality is very good. In our last two years, his bulls were readily accepted by both the purebred and commercial man. We think the Top Tier progeny in this years sale is the best yet so he deserves the lead off spot in our 2024 sale.

This bull has been a standout from day one. This old saying “full of meat and potatoes” best describes this bull. He’s dark red, full of muscle and meat, deep bodied, long made and is great haired with a really nice disposition. His mother is a beautiful uddered first calf Poker Face daughter who has done a whale of a job on this Top Tier son. He ranked 5/62 contemporaries for weaning weight, had an actual weaning weight of 875 lbs on a year that was drought right from the start of spring. We think this meat machine has a lot of opportunity to offer the industry.

I bought the Yuma daughter out of our 2023 Bull Sale from Wade and just this summer purchased the Liner 56U Tamale cow from Wade. She will enter our donor pen now as she’s a powerful, big broody, great uddered 56U daughter. This thick made, deep bodied, long Tier son is smooth made and very attractive. Well where do I start with this guy. One of my all time favorite red bulls. If he would have DNA tested homo polled he would be walking our pastures this summer. He’s super stout, very deep ribbed, long made and has a beautiful haircoat. He has a perfect blaze down his head and no other white. His mother is a first calf Betts daughter who has a perfect udder and goes back to a great Red Deputy cow. I just can’t say enough good things about this stud, you be the judge sale day. I forgot to add he was the #1 indexing bull for weaning weight this fall. Out of 62 contemporaries he has an adjusted weaning weight of 886 lbs. Not bad for an end of February calf.

A really smooth baldy son of Top Tier our of the $40,000, Betts daughter we purchased out of the Rose-Jenna-Flirt Bohrson summer sale in 2021. What a beauty she has become, great uddered, long and broody. Her son is pretty special too, long bodied, deep, loose made, good haircoat and the money stripe blaze on his head. This March calf too had a great adjusted weaning weight of 828 lbs, ranking 6th our of 62 contemporaries. What a set of fancy replacement heifers he would sire.

HOMO POLLED This is the first group of WFL Mountain View 4J bulls. When Mountain View sold through Westway’s sale in 2022, Oberle’s and ourselves were the runner up bidder on him with Black Gold Simmentals purchasing him. We were fortunate that they sold us a semen pack on him. We bred mostly second calvers to him and that turned out very well. He calves well, added his dark color, good hair and muscle to his offspring. And his mother was also a really good baldy Westerdale female going back to their Red Doll cow family. This 10L son is very long made, good muscled and stylish.

HOMO POLLED A really smooth made Walk The Line son out Lot 9 - 16L of the Pocahontas 105L cow family. 16L’s mother, Pocahontas 10D, is also the mother of Pocahontas 117F, themother of LFE Loyalty 836H bull, the blaze faced bull that is so popular in the industry. Some of his sons are selling in the sale. 16L’s sire, Mader Walk The Line is the $280,000 sensation that sold in the 2021 Friday Night Lights sale to KT Ranches and Bohrson Marketing. We were able to attain a semen package in him and glad we did. This son of his is really nice made, super long, really smooth through that front end, great feet and legs. This kind that will add pounds to your calf crop.

We purchased his dam at the Simmsational Sale as a bred heifer from Pheasantdale Cattle Co. We then bred her as a two year old to Mountain View and she has done a great job raising this bull calf. If your into EPD’s just taking a look at his – above average in all 13 traits and an API index ranking in the top 15% of the breed and a TI Index in the top 25% of the breed.

This blood red Shamrock son has been admired by some of the really good cattleman this fall and winter. We purchased his dam as a bred heifer out of the Springcreek Dispersal Sale where she was our pick of the black bred heifers. She left us with an excellent red bull calf. The mother is great uddered. Also 14L has a nice moderate birth weight of 80 lbs, weaning off his two year old mother at 915 lbs, not bad in a drought stricken year. He is in the top 2% of the breed for calving ease EPD and top 3% for birthweight. This is one of our favorites! Just love this bull. He’s dark cherry red, super thick and deep, big topped, great haircoat and has a great disposition, something we put a lot of emphasis on. We feel this is one of our feature black bulls in the sale this year. Circle 7 and ourselves purchased his dam out of the Springcreek Dispersal in December of 2022. This Mindbender daughter was our pick of the black cows and was the high selling percentage female in the sale. She has a beautiful udder, deep pear shaped, just a beautiful front pasture cow. 4L’s sire is a half brother to Caliber, being sired by Structure. He is a baldy bull and was Brian’s high seller in his 2021 Bull Sale. 4L himself is thick-thick, big topped and has a big white star on his perfect head- just a meat machine. This calf has a lot of opportunity in him. With the now CSA bylaw, 7/8 males are now considered purebred like the females have always been, you can breed this bull to your 15/16 and high percentage females and all the progeny would be considered purebred. Or put him on a bunch of commercials cows and wow! What a set of calves he would sire.

This is a really good soggy, ¾ blood Mandate son. Been one of our favorites since birth as is his mother, that was our pick of the half bloods out of the R Plus dispersal. I haven’t seen many Mandate calves yet but if they are as good as the two we got, Rainbow River is in for some pretty exciting calves as they purchased him for $150,000 om R Plus 2022 bull sale. 210L is a really good bull for his age, he is soggy , loose hided, thick and deep. He had a nice moderate 92 lbs birthweight and had an adjusted weaning weight of 838 lbs, first out of his 8 contemporaries.

A definite sale feature bull! ‘The Architect’ This polled Havoc calf has been a standout since birth and why wouldn’t he be with the mother he has got. Black Gold Ms Perry 141F, maybe the best fullblood cow walking our pastures. Kelly Oberle and ourselves purchased her out of the Border City sale at Lloydminster where she was the high selling female. She is dark cherry red, pear shaped, stylish and has an excellent udder. This is the third bull of hers to go through the bull sale with the others selling to Silzer Land & Cattle and to Pine Creek Simmentals and 619 Land and Cattle. Architect is the result of an embryo, he has two polled sisters in our keeper heifer pen that are also very good. His recipient mother died when he was about 4 months old so he was moved to a Holstein who already had three calves on her. He still managed to wean off at 895 lbs with an 854 lbs adjusted weaning weight. Wonder what he would be weaned off at if he would have had his original mother? Architect is blood red right down to his feet, big wrap around goggles with red lips, deep-deep bodied, big topped, excellent feet and legs, performance with size and POLLED.

A smooth made Reputation son in a polled package. We purchased his Anchor D Raptor dam as a heifer calf from Maxwell Simmentals. 87L is really smooth through that shoulder and neck area as I think he would really calve good. Another feature Polled bull! A polled son of Southseven Mr Adonis 96Z. A very unique pedigree in a polled pedigree. We feel Mr Adonis 96Z (STUEY) is maybe the best breeding Fleckvieh fullblood bull of all time. I like this bull a lot. His mother is one of our best. Her first three calves were all heifers and are all retained in our herd. In 2020 she had probably our top bull of the whole pen, a homozygous polled Canon bull, now working at Packett Bros. A full brother to 168L working with the good commercial herd of Cliff Barnetts and now this full brother 168L. This calf in my mind is very very good. Great haircoat, thick made, big topped and lots of eye appeal. He will add style, stoutness and capacity to your calf crop. His calves will push the scales down.

Absolutely love this bull! One of my personal favorites of the whole sale. His sire, RWR Walker 15J, was the $100,000 bull ourselves and the Oberle’s purchased out of the Red Willow Ranch Sale in 2022. Unfortunately we had trouble with him and this is the only bull calf we got and two outstanding heifer calves. We believe it was a real loss to our Fullblood program and to the fullblood industry as he was a beast of a bull, thick and deep as any bull we’ve ever seen. 204L’s mother is a really good Adonis 96Z cow, long bodied, good uddered and produces what the Southseven Adonis’s are known for. Our daughters, Embrie and Eva, are growing like weeds, and it’s truly a joy to witness their unique personalities emerge. Embrie is soaking up all the new and exciting things in Kindergarden, and Eva keeps us all on our toes, ensuring there’s never a dull moment in our day! What a great time to be in the cattle business! Prices are as strong as they’ve ever been and that strength appears to be holding for the foreseeable future. Now more than ever, cattle buyers are looking for those heavyweight crossbred calves. Bred cow sales have been extremely strong throughout last fall and into the new year. A lot of optimism is great to see in this business as we all know it can be challenging at times. This years moderate winter temperatures have saved a lot of bales which is much needed for many producers. Due to a few years of drought in a row we have made the switch to feeding silage in order to put up more feed on our limited acres. Although I was admittedly a bit nervous to make the switch, I couldn’t be happier with how the cattle have performed. The bull’s ration has been developed and balanced specifically for a reasonable amount of growth and long term performance. All the bulls are on our herd health program and will be semen tested and guaranteed. Delivery is free of charge, but we do ask that any bulls that come back to our place for wintering are insured. Most of the bulls in our offering have been homo polled and homo black tested. This was a much anticipated calf and hasn’t disappointed since he was born at the end of February. Back in the spring of 2022 we were fortunate to purchase the pick of the first calf R Plus heifers in their last bull sale and this guy was our first embryo calf off of Miss R Plus 0026H. To say 0026H is our type of female would be a huge understatement. She’s wide from behind, deep from the side, and ties her shoulder in to her front third beautifully. We feel her udder flawless and we are very excited for the things this female will do in the future. 366L himself is big ribbed, free moving, and like all of the mandates very hairy. He is the youngest in our offering by a couple weeks so don’t miss out on this guy.

When you want to talk about a bull with a lot of natural power and mass this is one that comes to mind for me. You have to appreciate his depth of body, spring of rib and extra width in his hip. 302L comes from one of our favorite cows on the farm, not only from a conformation standpoint, but also because “Bobby” is a bit of a pet. BOBE 38B was crowned the AgEx Grand Champion female in 2016 and hasn’t looked back since. We have flushed her in the past a few different ways and her calves, both natural and transplanted, have her same calm demeanor and are powerful in their type. A maternal sibling to 302L is doing a great job at Tri K Cattle in Beaverlodge, AB.

I’d like to have a whole pen of these type of heifers. Her mother is a good Bentley daughter in a red package going back to the very good Ms Red Ribeye 175N cow. If his heifer doesn’t make a great cow then I don’t know much about the cattle business. A true brood cow in the making.

She was a great red heifer calf out of the famous Soda Pop flush daughter. Wish I had a picture of her now, she’s a beautiful front pasture cow. What would a sale be without a red blaze feature heifer calf. Her blaze faced, great uddered Brooks mother has sent progeny to the sale before and we have a really good daughter of hers retained in the herd. This mid February heifer calf has a perfect blaze, really dark red, a beautiful profile and sired by the great Mader Walk The Line bull. With her Brooks mother and a super Red Chief grandmother, there should be the making of predictable genetics.

A good WFL Mountain View heifer that we really like, and she’s out the Normac cow family going back to the matron Miss Normac 16M cow. We purchased a semen package on Mountain View from Westway Farms and Black Gold Simmentals. WE couldn’t be happier with his calf crop. He was selected for his performance, color, haircoat, great set of EPD’s and his beautiful dam. Will end the red section of our heifers with a pair of Top Tier daughters. We really believe Top Toer is one of our best bulls we ever purchased over our long careers in the Simmental business. He’s a bull that calves so good, leaves many blaze faces but most importantly raises very saleable bulls and heifers who have his muscle shape and style. With his daughters calving now the proof is in the pudding as they say. Really nice uddered, calve easily themselves and have do-ability.
