Banbury Grasslands & MIDA Shorthorns Our family has kept cattle in Ontario continuously for 6 generations, since the 1840’s. 2020 will mark 25 years for us keeping purebred shorthorns. We are focused on moderate, easy doing, low maintenance cattle that will work in our grassfed beef program. We have approximately 50 mother cows, and sell 25-30 grass-fed & grass-finished 2 year-old’s every year direct to customers. None of our cattle are ever fed grain. We raise them naturally on pasture from May-December with daily moves to fresh grass. For the main cow herd in St. Agatha, we bale graze hay and baleage for the winter, with cattle sheltering outside in the bush. 4-year old cows and up nurse their calves through the winter, weaning them naturally around 9-10 months of age. Calves are separated at 1 year of age when they go to grass. Although we don’t normally vaccinate, opting instead for closed herd prevention, these bred heifers are vaccinated and boostered with Triangle 10-way killed vaccine. We have sought out genetics that we feel will produce females that will thrive and last in our program. We have DNA tested and genomic enhanced EPD’s on all our bulls and a good portion of our females. We employ Gearld Fry linear measurements to select and predict the best grass-based phenotype cows and bulls. Consistency is key for us, I would like every one of my cows to look the same, this make our grass-fed beef consistently good one steer to the next.

Locustview Shorthorns purchased our first 2 Shorthorns 24 years ago. Today the herd has grown to 40 cows. Over the years we have our changed our direction on breeding Shorthorns. Over the last 10 years we have strived to breed Shorthorns that reproduce have good udders, feet and legs and hold their conditionon a roughage based diet. I have tried to select bulls from bloodlines that produce these kind of cattle purchasing bulls that have a large western influence in their bloodlines. Some of the bulls who have helped us accomplish these goals have been Locustview T-Bone 11T, MSA Warden 90W THE [Lincoln Red influence] and my all time favourite Bamberry Mikey FB 19W. His daughters have been the foundation brood cows in our herd. 10 consignments in the sale are from Mikey daughters. Our last 2 bulls are sire of 17 lots in the sale. WLC Gold Banner 48A from Alberta goes back to Alta Cedar and Six S breeding. Leahy’s Captain Farrell 5C was our next purchase from Bernard Leahy’s. This bull is a Alta Cedar Perfect Storm grandson and out of a Muridale Buster daughter. Our last purchase and service sire for the majority of our consignments was purchased at the 2019 Who’s Your Daddy Bull Sale Bell M Rockstar 62E from Saskatchewan is a smooth made Bell M Martin son who was used as a yearling at Bell M birth wts. averaged 86 lbs. E.P.D’s are impressive and his index values are in the top 15 percent of the breed. These cattle in this sale haven’t been pushed and were pictured in their working clothes. I am confident these cattle will work in a purebred or commercial herd and will promote the breed in the direction the breed should be striving towards.
