GWelcome to the 2023 edition of our bull sale. First and foremost, we extend a huge thank you to all our buyers over the past year. Whether it be our many valued, longterm customers or first-time buyers, the support shown Corinne and myself is very gratifying. On December 12 I followed through on the difficult decision that had been made to streamline the operation to one breed to reduce the workload. The Black Angus Female Dispersal made for a very busy fall but the cattle were certainly appreciated and it was a great sale. This sale will be your last opportunity to source a Circle G Black Angus bull. Those that viewed the Black Angus females raved about their ease of fleshing and uniformity as well as the foot and udder quality of the cattle. This has been achieved, in both breeds, by culling ruthlessly for those traits. I also utilize genetics that enhances calving ease, feed efficiency and carcass quality while maintaining above-average growth and performance. I believe that epds are a valuable selection tool, especially in the BW and CE traits, and pride myself on breeding cattle that look good and are functional while having excellent, balanced epd numbers...take note of the breed epd rankings listed with each sale bull. Also, this catalogue has pictures of the sale bulls’ mothers for well over half of the bulls...no one else provides this but I feel it is very valuable information that’s needed to truly evaluate the bulls and make informed buying decisions. These extra pictures make for extra work and I thank my team of Ben and Joe for all their help with picturing and everything else they do to keep this place on track.

The Circle G bulls were weaned on September 2 and ran on green feed swaths and banked grass for 2 weeks. They were then started on a silage-based TMR ration that is balanced to grow them and allow them to express their genetic performance potential without impairing their soundness and longevity. No creep feed is used through the summer and no feet are trimmed. I feel it is very important to have the weaning weights totally reflect the dam’s milking ability. The bulls were in their 10 acre field until after the Angus dispersal sale and brought into the yard on December 14 so they got plenty of exercise. There will be bigger, heavier bulls sold at sales this year but you will not find a sounder, more athletic set of bulls anywhere.

All the bulls 12 months and older by sale time will be semen tested. The bulls will return to the farm after the sale and those bulls that haven’t been semen tested will be after they have matured more. Delivery to your farm will follow.

There are no Red Angus bulls in the sale but there are more Red Simmental bulls selling and they are an exciting set with large sire groups that offer my customers some new genetics. Note that there are numerous red bulls that will provide very similar calving ease to the Red Angus bulls that I’ve offered in the past. The sale bulls provide a wide range of bloodlines and phenotypes to suit different operations and breeding goals, and there should be a bull, or bulls, that will be a perfect match for your herd.

We hope you can be with us in Innisfail on sale day, but for those unable to attend, we are providing various options and ways for you to buy your bulls. DLMS will be onsite to handle internet bidding, our sight-unseen buying program has worked very well in the past and a very competent sales staff can assist you as well. I strongly encourage you to come and view the bulls and their mothers at the farm prior to the sale or call and visit about the bulls. Remember that no one knows the bulls better than me. The bulls will be available for viewing at Innisfail on Thursday and Friday.

Calving Ease Scores

Calving ease is a combination of a bull’s actual birth weight, his genetics (epds) and the females a bull is bred to. 50% of the equation is the management and genetics of the female. The Calving Ease Score (CE) provided is my best estimation of calving ease after evaluating the actual BW, epds, genetics and body shape of each bull.

I had my eye on Potent the moment the Perkins sale catalogue came online. His dark red color along with his thickness, masculinity and outcross pedigree, anchored by an Opal female, prompted me to learn more. The Opal cow family originated here at Circle G so I knew the bottom side of the pedigree should be rock solid maternally. I leaned on Bill Biglieni to look at the bull as well as his sire and mother for me. His very positive evaluation led me to bid $69,000 as the contending bidder. He sold to the good Labatte and Circle 7 operations for $70,000 and I thank Barry for allowing me to purchase one of the only two semen packages they sold. Sixteen outstanding Potent sons sell in this sale and they prove my intention to own the bull was well founded. Potent is just what his name implies. He is passing along powerful genetics and is a true herdsire.

The difficult decision had been made in 2021 to sell the Angus cattle in order to streamline the operation to one breed and reduce the workload. 2022 marked twenty=five years of breeding Angus cattle at Circle G and it was with very mixed emotions that the Black Angus cowherd was sold on December 12. It was a great sale! It was very gratifying that the cattle were so well received and sold to buyers from BC to Quebec and into the USA.

Two Year Old Bulls

I always have requests for some two year old bulls but rarely have any to carry over. Each year I keep a group of bulls, of both breeds, out of the sale to provide customers with backup bulls in case of failed semen tests and breeding injuries and last year these bulls were not needed. It’s great that my bulls are standing up well and now, in my last Angus bull sale, I can offer these 3 quality bulls, with a little more age, that will handle big pastures and cover more cows.

The Circle G cowherd has been culled ruthlessly for udder and foot quality, ease of fleshing and temperament. I insist on these fundamentals. The cows are not pampered and are managed similar to those of many of my commercial bull customers utilizing swath grazing and high roughage rations. 20% of their silage based winter feed is made up of straw to lower input costs and put selection pressure on the herd. Every year at least 15% of the cowherd is removed and replaced...each cow must earn the right to stay.

Ranch horse deluxe, Blue is a 10-year-old blue roan gelding that stands 15.1 hh. Blue has been used on the ranch doctoring yearlings and dragging calves to the fire. He is athletic and strong and really watches a cow.

Radar is a stout made 9 year old draft quarter horse cross gelding I have used for all ranch chores. Radar is put together really nice, with lots of bone and substance. He has been used to drag calves to the fire, riding pens at the feedlot, and treating yearlings on grass. We have used Radar in the mountains, he will cross rivers and deadfall with ease.
