Welcome to our 18th Annual Bull Sale! As I write this, I think of all the positive and exciting changes we are seeing in our industry. With the decline in cow numbers over the last year and a half and still lots of cows moving, it should really put the guys who have stayed in the cow/calf sector in the driver’s seat.

Whether maintaining smaller cow herds or trying to increase cow numbers – we truly feel our bulls on offer are the needed bulls at this time. I think high maternal, low input cattle are always necessary in a world of ever climbing input costs. We strive to raise high maternal cows and stay away from breeding to whatever the next fad is or breeding to bulls simply seeking high EPD numbers. We feel performance is extremely important – however, having longevity, fertility, and cows with superior foot and claw structure are first and foremost. We try to develop our bulls so they will last and breed as long as they can for our customers.

The bull calves are weaned early fall and backgrounded on free choice hay and a low percentage of their bodyweight of a high grain pellet. Mid-May the bulls go to pasture to graze a blend of sanfoin and cicer milkvetch. This grass blend helps develop the bull in a way that they can put pounds and extra flesh on while grazing forage. Come mid-October, the bulls come home to a diet of free-choice hay and a high grain pellet. We feed a low percentage of pellets again to the bulls to ensure they last and have longevity for our customers.

Anytime of the year we encourage people to come see our program. Through tough conditions or plentiful conditions, our cows always seem to maintain great body condition. Welcome to our 18th Annual All Black Bull Sale! Most of our bulls this year are sired by our walking herd bulls. Our customers have commented that our bulls off our herd sires are every bit as good as our AI’d sired bulls. So instead of just using our herd sires as clean up bulls, we used them as our main bull battery. Looking at the bull results this was a good decision. We select sires for balance of calving ease, fleshing ability and strong maternal traits. This fall we weaned September 24th after a very wet June, it turned the tap off in July and there was basically no rain the rest of the summer. It is amazing how good the pastures were after our ample rainfall and ended up with excellent pastures and above average haycrop. The bulls have been fed Masterfeeds Bull ration and free choice hay. They have been vaccinated spring and pre-weaning with Bovi-Shield BVD One Shot vaccine and Inforce 3 to aid in the prevention of respiratory issues.

Ranch life always keeps us busy, and Julie also helps Lacey run the kitchen at the Stockyards. Chris continues to drive truck in the oilfield around Smiley and Jenna is busy at home with their 3 girls – Madison in Grade 6, Jordynn in Grade 5 and Kaycee in Grade 1. The girls are in Horse 4-H and other various school activities. They enjoy coming to Meadow Lake to help with branding, hauling cows, weighing, and other ranch activities. Little Wren is 1 years old now and we enjoy working back and forth between the ranches.

We really enjoyed the hospitality of the 2022 Angus Tour in Maple Creek and area. It was great travelling to so many areas and ranches, and seeing how much the countryside can change in a short distance. We saw a lot of great cattle, were fed exceptionally well, and it was so nice seeing many old friends and meeting new ones!
