Research + Bibliography Workspace design requires a deep analysis into many areas of design that are important to aesthetics, ergonomics, and functionality. Designers are faced with the task of breaking down a space by first getting to know their clients, and then solving the problem of how the space can be conducive to workspace productivity. “Workplace design should enable clients to do their jobs easily, remain flexible so that end users can adjust the space according to their particular work style and be adaptable so that it can work well into the future” (Wheeler). Upon close examination of open office plans, it can be concluded that perhaps this design approach is best for innovative workplace design. “Designing innovative workspaces requires new ways of thinking about the physical and virtual aspects of the space – tying together people, space and technology to support changing (and more progressive) business practices” (GSA Office of Government Policy, 9). Open office plans offer this new approach to workspace design, tying together the team collaboration with both space and technology to an easily adaptable space. An open office plan that has a “unique character … an appropriate image and identity instills a sense of pride, purpose and dedication for the individual and the workplace community” (GSA Office of Government Policy, 10). Combining the innovative approach to an open office floor plan will provide that unique identity to bring a sense of community to an office. Designers often find that “the tendency is to apply the same workstation
plan across a whole floor plate … [yet] the proper approach is to consider such elements as privacy requirements … horizontal surface and storage space needs for different types of work” (Charles and Pero). An active, productive workplace exists when “executives, managers, designers and employees all actively participate in developing and owning the workplace” (GSA Office of Government Policy, 9). Applying these ideas to workspace design will produce fresh, new approaches to the way offices are designed, with open office floor plans as the driving force for productive, efficient workspace design. Magner Sandborn
Case Studies In business for 7 years, Magner Sandborn is a well established graphic design and branding firm in downtown Spokane, WA. Their office design is minimal, with not a lot of functionality, yet its design is flexible, mobile, and the current architecture is a far cry from the department store that it used to be. The firm combines adaptive reuse into a 50 year old building, hiding lots of custom design ware from hardware to materials within their furniture to maintain minimalism. They display no artwork on their walls, mainly to keep an open feeling, guiding you along and keeping the mind open for inspiration. They wanted a cohesive feeling of an open office, maintaining collaboration among workers, with private offices for the principles and client meetings.
Design Philosophy: “Simple, clean, the less is more approach. Always mainting a fresh, modern feel. - Magner Sandborn
HDG Hissong+hurtado Design Group HDG, open for business for a little over a year, has begun to get lots of attention since opening their doors. Within the last 3 months, they have won an international design competition with Cosentino tile for their style and use of Silestone in a recent restaurant design. The office environment at HDG is very open. Between the layout and the work environment, the principles and designers are constantly engaged in discussion on projects, promoting a positive work environment and more design development. With only one main conference room, the clients are brought into the office and are encouraged to mingle with office employees while they work. Lots of natural light pour in from the surrounding windows, and natural colors with a few pops of color create a postiive atmosphere.
