ARTIST My artistic pabulum was made for the sake of demonstrating the lack of artistic expression amongst a movement of collage artists; the very people whose attention I initially intended on capturing. Denver has been overpowered by a vulgar, anti-woman, pornographic and meaningless aesthetic in art. What had once been real has now been processed and pushed to a point of unveiling its true reason for production, simply put: narcissism. The declination of this movement began with the growth of antiart and mixed media in-your-face visuals laced with nothing more than irony; yet these anti-artists now demand to be empowered and spotlighted. The fecundity of this movement is over and it has crossed into simple obscenity. The phrase “We need to face ourselves,” is no longer a means, for these artists of expression, it is instead about one’s self-effulgent pride. To keep pursuing this degrading notion of expression is dangerous, we shall lead ourselves into a doomed mainstream of ironic and hollow a regard to expression. You cannot grasp or reflect any sincere meaning and emotion if you deny yourself the integrity found in honest creativity. The artwork is for their inwardly vain existence rather than outward emotion. You have relied on symbolism to carry you but cannot define or know why you partake in creating. How long before we finally dismiss “artistic” actions that are void of any actual artistic content? My intentions are not to discredit any artist, but simply to demand a more thoughtful creative intent. We are a cumulating providence of prior generations and hypocrisy. We should be aware of what it is we sell to ourselves and future generations. This is our responsibility as artists. You are not weaving enigmatic languages or cleverly disguising the brutal reality of marketing, you are willingly and errantly adding to the vanity and vulgarity of our culture. Our voices should be those which provoke through worthy images and expressive digestion, those which wrap themselves around works of personal and societal import. Let us bury this trite movement and move towards honesty rather than vanity.
