2021 Discovery Awards Doodle Tribute Book

HONORING TARA DUNCAN CHARLOTTE & GARY GILBERT + ARYEH GOLDBERG

DOODLING OUR WAY TO A BETTER WORLD THE CAYTON CHILDREN’S MUSEUM IS ABOUT MORE THAN JUST PLAY. IT’S ABOUT DISCOVERING WHAT IT MEANS TO BE KIND, LEARNING HOW TO WORK TOGETHER, TRYING NEW THINGS (EVEN IF IT’S FRIGHTENING), TESTING YOUR COURAGE, AND BEING CURIOUS ABOUT WHAT YOU DON’T YET KNOW. IT’S PLAY BUT WITH PURPOSE. Our Doodle Tribute Book gives aspiring little artists, creators, and big thinkers a blank canvas to explore all of these ideas by just putting a pencil to paper. Each “doodle” is one-of-a-kind, offering a glimpse into how our kids see the world around them—both individually and collectively. Those acknowledged on each page helped make this book possible through their generous support of the 2021 Discovery Awards. We hope this book and every doodle in it remind you of the importance of play and creativity in nurturing our kids and bringing our community together. Doodle on, friends.

THANK YOU TO OUR LEAD SUPPORTERS OF THE 2021 DISCOVERY AWARDS: JENNIFER & DAN GILBERT CHARLOTTE & GARY GILBERT SANTA MONICA PLACE/MACERICH

A LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Dear Friends, I am extremely honored to be Chairperson for this year’s Discovery Awards honoring Tara Duncan and Charlotte and Gary Gilbert. And I would like to extend the warmest of hugs and gratitude to my dear colleague Aryeh Goldberg, who this year will be awarded the first-ever “Creator of Impact” award. I would also like to thank the 2021 Event Committee for all of their hard work and also Carly Harrill and Sean Morris for their tireless efforts in making the transition to a real-life event that is full of joy, play, and gratitude. My personal goal for 2022 is to help wherever I can to return to fact and science-based discourse. I know it’s November, but it’s never too early to start … There are 5,280 feet in a mile. FACT Water boils at 212 degrees and freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit. FACT The Earth was created more than 6,000 years ago. FACT I am incredibly inspired by my wife Jennifer and my children Trevor Freed and Savannah and Noah Simon. FACT The Cayton is the first museum of its kind in Los Angeles. FACT YOU can help change the world by taking an active leadership role with children and youth of all ages. FACT I am proud to be part of an organization that nurtures young people to become responsible, compassionate and conscious human beings who work together to make the world a better and more equitable place. FACT

With the support of our Free Admission and Equity Campaign, the Cayton Children’s Museum is re-welcoming families to discover, in person, what life is like when play becomes a way for our children to practice being generous, to practice being accountable for one another, and to practice their capacity as leaders. FACT The road to recovery will be a long one with plenty of roadblocks and milestones along the way. This is life. We will need to be patient and compassionate to help each other navigate a path toward a new normal. But that’s why places like the Cayton Children’s Museum exist. They help us to connect, to find our community, and inspire us to always work toward something better—not just for ourselves but for those we may never even meet or know. This is the future we are advocating for by being here tonight. And it’s worth protecting. That’s a fact. THANK YOU.

CARL FREED EVENT CHAIRPERSON, 2021 DISCOVERY AWARDS BOARD CHAIR, CAYTON CHILDREN’S MUSEUM

A LETTER FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER + PRESIDENT & FOUNDER Dear Friends, Needless to say, it has been a year! When we gathered—virtually, of course—for last November’s Discovery Awards, our museum doors had already been closed for eight months, and there was no end in sight. We couldn’t imagine what the following year would have in store. And it goes without saying that this past year-plus was not as hoped for—for the Cayton and for society as a whole. Our entire community has grappled with the pandemic, heightened social and political divisiveness, school closures, and malaise and uncertainty at a level previously unimaginable. This time has tested the resiliency of our organization in ways never before experienced. A dedicated and determined team, flexibility, long-range thinking, unwavering focus on our mission, vision, and values, and the continued support of partners and donors like you are what carried us through. And now the Cayton is reopened and renewed—welcoming back eager visitors, and launching ambitious, creative programming, and boldly demonstrating our commitment to PLAY FOR ALL! The need for the Cayton has never been greater. Play is essential, especially now, and we are committed to making the enriching power of play available to all kids in the Los Angeles community. This starts with our decision to underwrite the cost of admission to the museum, and continues through our accessibility initiatives and community outreach programming. By joining us at this year’s Discovery Awards, you are demonstrating that you, too, understand the transformational benefits of abundance, creative, and purposeful play. Our work is only possible because of your generous philanthropic support. And, tonight, we celebrate that and the brighter future ahead! Cheers,

JESSICA ARONOFF CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER 6

ESTHER NETTER PRESIDENT & FOUNDER

2021 DISCOVERY AWARDS HONOREE TARA DUNCAN PRESIDENT OF FREEFORM & ONYX COLLECTIVE

Tara Duncan is president of Freeform and the newly created Onyx Collective. She reports to Dana Walden, Chairman of Entertainment, Walt Disney Television. In her first year, Duncan spearheaded the formation of Onyx Collective, a new content brand under Disney General Entertainment that is committed to inclusive storytelling from creators of color and underrepresented voices. Under the Onyx Collective umbrella, she acquired the Sundance breakout documentary Summer of Soul (…Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised), which will be distributed theatrically by Searchlight Pictures and streamed domestically by Hulu. The brand’s roster of prolific creators also includes writer, director and producer Prentice Penny (“Insecure,” “Uncorked”), writer and comedian Natasha Rothwell (“Insecure,” “SNL”) and all non-Marvel titles produced by Ryan Coogler’s Proximity (Judas and the Black Messiah and Black Panther). At Freeform, Duncan oversaw the series debut of “Cruel Summer,” which is the network’s most-watched series ever, including being a breakout hit on Hulu with next-day viewing and the most engaged new scripted cable series on social media. Additionally, under her leadership, the network launched “Love in the Time of Corona,” the first scripted limited series to shoot with social distance technologies; the fourth season of hit comedy “grown-ish,” cable’s No. 1 live-action comedy series for adults 18-34; the third season of critically acclaimed “Good Trouble”; and the upcoming comedy “Single Drunk Female,” from Jenni Konner and Simone Finch, among others. Duncan joined Disney General Entertainment from her overall deal at Hulu, where she curated a strong slate of projects, including an adaptation of Zakiya Dalila Harris’ acclaimed novel “The Other Black Girl,” which she won with Temple Hill Entertainment in a highly competitive bidding war. Before joining Hulu, she was a senior creative executive at Netflix, overseeing the hit series “Orange Is the New Black” and “Narcos” and launching new series with directors Spike Lee, Baz Luhrmann, The Wachowskis and Justin Simien. Prior to that, she produced the pilot “Bosch,” Amazon’s first drama series, and was a key creative executive at AMC. She started her career at Section Eight, George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh’s production company. 8

2021 DISCOVERY AWARDS HONOREES CHARLOTTE & GARY GILBERT PRODUCER & PHILANTHROPISTS

Gary is a businessman, film producer, and philanthropist. In 1985, at the age of 21, Gary and his brother Dan co-founded a residential mortgage company called Rock Financial. Today Rocket Mortgage (formerly Quicken Loans) is the nation’s largest mortgage lender. He is also a co-owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers NBA team, and founder and president of Gilbert Films, a media production and financing company based in Los Angeles. Gary began his film career when he financed and produced the 2004 critically acclaimed indie feature film Garden State, starring Zach Braff and Natalie Portman, which won an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature Film. In 2010, Gary produced and financed The Kids Are All Right, which earned 4 Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Picture. In 2016, Gary produced La La Land, which was critically acclaimed and nominated for 14 Academy Awards, matching the alltime record. Most recently, Gary produced and financed the 2021 Academy Award winning animated short film, If Anything Happens, I Love You, which follows the journey of two grieving parents in the aftermath of a tragic school shooting that resulted in the loss of their child. Charlotte and Gary are supporters of many philanthropic causes, including A Sense Of Home, which strives to prevent homelessness by creating first-ever homes for youth aging out of foster care with donated furniture and home goods. Charlotte and Gary were recently honored, along with Ted Sarandos and Nicole Avant, by A Sense Of Home for their annual fundraiser. Together, Charlotte and Gary understand the importance of philanthropic leadership and are passing down the lessons of giving passionately to their three young children.

CREATOR OF IMPACT AWARD ARYEH GOLDBERG INAUGURAL HONOREE

Aryeh Goldberg began his journey with the Cayton Children’s Museum 20 years ago as the Chief Financial Officer of the Jewish Community Centers of Greater Los Angeles, the parent organization of what was then the Zimmer Children’s Museum. After attending business school at UCLA and joining the team at Deloitte, Aryeh moved into an advisory role with the Zimmer as a member of the Budget, Finance and Investment Committee on the Board of Advisors. In 2008, he joined the Board of Directors and took on the position of Board Treasurer—a position he would hold for the next 13 years. As Board Treasurer, Aryeh worked to strengthen the organization’s financial health, including its financial reporting, board governance and accounting practices, and long-term strategic planning to grow the museum’s visitorship to 90k visitors annually. When the Zimmer outgrew its space, he guided the organization through a $15M capital campaign to find its new home and finance the build-out of the new space. In 2019, after reaching the campaign goal, the Cayton Children’s Museum opened its doors on the rooftop of Santa Monica Place, offering more accessibility and double the play space. In June 2021, Aryeh retired his seat as Board Treasurer but still remains an active member of the Cayton’s Board of Directors. Outside of his work with the Cayton, Aryeh is the Executive Vice President of Commercial Operations at Bruin Biometrics LLC, a medical device concept-to-commercialization company. Prior to his current role, Aryeh acted as the Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Growth for a privately held healthcare company and Senior Manager in Deloitte Consulting’s Strategy and Operations practice. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors at the Cayton, Aryeh has held Board roles at the Westside JCC, Beth Jacob Congregation, PhilanthroProductions, and American Friends of Magen David Adom. He is currently the chairman of the Dean’s Advisory Council for the Center for the Jewish Future at Yeshiva University and co-chairman on the Anwar Sadat Congressional Gold Medal Commission in commemoration of 40 years of peace between Israel and Egypt. Still, Aryeh’s most important accomplishment in his life is his family: his wife, Judy, and his three Cayton alumni, Noam, Elan and Eli. 10

2021 DISCOVERY AWARDS HOST GARRICK BERNARD WRITER, ACTOR & COMEDIAN

Garrick Bernard is currently starring in “Single Drunk Female,” an upcoming Freeform series from Jenni Konner and Simone Finch, and directed by Leslye Headland. A writer, actor, and stand-up comedian, Garrick has a unique, dark sense of humor, often with a genre bend. He is currently writing on two adult animated shows: “Solar Opposites” as well as “Star Trek: Lower Decks”. As a stand-up, Garrick was previously named one of Comedy Central’s “Up Next” Comics.
