Ten students were accompanied by Mr Garry Hart and Ms Marriann O’Neill to work with Edmund Rice Services in Maasin City in the Philippines. In addition to learning much about the community
One of the features of this immersion is that the students were able to work with the local people in settings which were often very unfamiliar to our boys. In addition to assisting with health checks in primary schools, tree planting and environmental programmes, the boys also had the opportunity to engage in some cultural exchange with students their own age in two high schools. This diversity of experience ensured that the immersion was authentic and challenging. As a College which professes a special concern

Science is golden! The ConocoPhililips Science Experience runs at various West Australian universities in the form of two to four day courses over the summer holidays. In the past we have had many students attend and had a wonderful time meeting new friends, conducting all sorts of experiments and learning about some of the newest and coolest stuff in Science. The cost is between $150.00 and $200.00 and the Science department is offering two scholarships for successful applicants. Any student is eligible to attend and scholarships are also offered through Rotary Clubs. Interested students should find out more from Mrs Lawlor or their Science teacher. Application forms and more information about the experience can be found at the website: www.scienceexperience.com.au/when-where/wa.

What CBC boys say about being a College leader ... With the departure of the Year 12 cohort, the Class of 2018 have stepped up to fulfil their destiny as leaders of the College.
Stephen Jaeger Year 11 How does it feel to be a leader of the College? It’s a pretty big responsibility, but it’s also a great thing to live up to, especially seeing how the leaders in Year 12 conducted themselves when we were very young. It’s a great privilege and honour to be able to step up into their shoes. How have you enjoyed being a trial Prefect? It’s certainly been a different experience, thinking about how you should conduct yourself as a leader, and what it takes to be an effective one. It’s also been interesting to see how other boys have their own ways of becoming the leaders they aspire to be. Why do you want to be a Prefect? It’s a great thing to be able to say ‘I was a leader of my school’. It’s also a great way for younger kids to look up to you, and say ‘I want to be like that’, like we did to the Year 12 Prefects when we were younger. If you were Principal for a day, what is one change you would make? I’m not sure. Page 10 | CBC Fremantle Newsletter | Week 2 Term 4
Justin Oliveri Year 11 How does it feel to be a leader of the College? It feels really great, it’s a great way to get into the culture of CBC. How have you enjoyed being a trial Prefect? It’s been really good, and given me the opportunity to go for College Captain and Vice Captain, which has been a great experience. Why do you want to be a Prefect? I want to give younger students the opportunity to see what a great leader can look like and really just say that anyone can be a leader, you just have to believe in yourself. If you were Principal for a day, what is one change you would make? You would be allowed to chew gum all day.
Ryan Sheehan Year 11
Zac Stedman Year 11
Theo Terzoudis-Lumsden Year 11
How does it feel to be a leader of the College? It’s good to know you’re an example for the younger kids, and it’s good the teachers can start relying on you. They’ve done a lot so it’s good to finally give back.
How does it feel to be a leader of the College? It feels good. I think all of the preparation has meant we’ve been eased into it, so it’s not too difficult. It definitely feels like I have more responsibility now.
How does it feel to be a leader of the College? It’s pretty much the same but I’ve noticed people look at you differently.
How have you enjoyed being a trial Prefect? It’s good to go through it with your mates, and when you work on stuff like City to Surf and Black Dog on a Lead, you learn a lot about your friends.
How have you enjoyed being a trial Prefect? It’s been good, there’s been a lot of preparation and practice, but it’s been lots of fun.
Why do you want to be a Prefect? It’s good to know you’re a leader, and it’s a nice thing that people can look up to you. If you were Principal for a day, what is one change you would make? I would change the siren, so when there’s an assembly, it’s a different bell.
Why do you want to be a Prefect? I feel that I can benefit the school quite a bit, in a leadership position, and these skills will help me later in life.
How have you enjoyed being a trial Prefect? It’s been pretty good. You get treated differently, you get a lot more respect from people, as long as you put in the work and effort to help others. Why do you want to be a Prefect? Because I like helping out around the school. If you were Principal for a day, what is one change you would make? Make lunch longer, and give everyone a free cookie on Fridays.
If you were Principal for a day, what is one change you would make? You can wear whatever sports shoes you want!
